BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Intracranial hemorrhage due to hyperperfusion syndrome is a severe carotid artery stent placement complication of extremely high-grade stenosis, causing hemodynamic insufficiency. To prevent hyperperfusion syndrome, we attempted intentional residual stent stenosis and implemented “gentle” carotid artery stent placement, defined as carotid artery stent placement using a closed-cell stent coupled with slight balloon predilation, without balloon postdilation. Gradual stent expansion was expected. We investigated the incidence of hyperperfusion syndrome and long-term outcomes after gentle carotid artery stent placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included patients who underwent carotid artery stent placement for extremely high-grade stenosis from January 2015 to March 2019. In a program we developed called “Let's keep wiping to draw pictures!”, projected graphic images change according to rehabilitation movements for upper limbs, and the levels of exercise amount and quality of movement achieved by patients are reflected in the outcome of the artwork as feedback. At a rehabilitation hospital, inpatients who used the program to perform rehabilitation exercises showed higher levels of satisfaction and expectation in the exercises, and performed simple and repetitive movements more willingly. The program can expect to maintain motivation towards rehabilitation.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent degenerative joint disease, resulting in joint pain, impaired movement, and structural changes. As the ability of joint tissue to resist stress is mainly imparted by fibrillar collagens in the extracellular matrix, changes in the composition and structure of collagen fibers contribute to the pathological remodeling observed in OA joints that includes cartilage degeneration, subchondral bone (SCB) sclerosis, and meniscal damage. Using the established OA model of destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) in C57BL/6J mice, we performed a comprehensive analysis of the content and structure of collagen fibers in the articular cartilage, subchondral bone, and menisci using complementary techniques, which included second harmonic generation microscopy and immunofluorescence staining. We found that regions exposed to increased mechanical stress in OA mice, typically closest to the site of injury, had increased collagen fiber thickness, dysregulated fiber formation, and tissue specific changes in collagen I and II (Col I and Col II) expression. In cartilage, OA was associated with decreased Col II expression in all regions, and increased Col I expression in the anterior and posterior regions. Col I fiber thickness was increased in all regions with disorganization in the center region. In the superficial SCB, all regions exhibited increased Col I expression and fiber thickness in OA mice; no changes were detected in the deeper regions of the subchondral bone except for increased Col I fiber thickness. In the menisci, OA led to increased Col I and Col II expression in the vascular and avascular regions of the anterior meniscus with increased Col I fiber thickness in these regions. Similar changes were observed only in the vascular region of the posterior meniscus. Our findings provide, for the first time, comprehensive insights into the microarchitectural changes of extracellular matrix in OA and serve as guidelines for studies investigating therapies that target collagenous changes as means to impede the progression of osteoarthritis.

Background Blood pressure (BP) variability has reportedly been a risk factor for various clinical events. To clarify the influence of BP visit‐to‐visit variability on adverse events in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, a post hoc analysis of the J‐RHYTHM Registry was performed. Methods and Results Of 7406 outpatients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation from 158 institutions, 7226 (age, 69.7±9.9 years; men, 70.7%), in whom BP was measured 4 times or more (14.6±5.0 times) during the 2‐year follow‐up period or until occurrence of an event, constituted the study group. SD and coefficient of variation of BP values were calculated as BP variability. Thromboembolism, major hemorrhage, and all‐cause death occurred in 110 (1.5%), 121 (1.7%), and 168 (2.3%) patients, respectively. When patients were divided into quartiles of systolic BP‐SD (P =0.015 for thromboembolism; HR, 2.60, 95% CI, 1.36–4.97, P =0.004 for major hemorrhage; and HR, 1.85, 95% CI, 1.11–3.07, P =0.018 for all‐cause death) after adjusting for components of the CHA 2 DS 2 ‐VASc score, warfarin and antiplatelet use, atrial fibrillation type, BP measurement times, and others. These findings were consistent when BP‐coefficient of variation was used instead of BP‐SD. Conclusions Systolic BP visit‐to‐visit variability was significantly associated with all adverse events in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Further studies are needed to clarify the causality between BP variability and adverse outcomes in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Background Noninvasive evaluation of patients with stable angina is preferable over invasive testing if it leads to similar patient outcome. The combination of coronary angiography and vasodilator challenge myocardial perfusion imaging by computed tomography allows fast, comprehensive assessment of patients with suspected coronary heart disease. Purpose To compare the long-term prognostic value of combined computed tomography angiography (CTA) and myocardial CT perfusion imaging (CTP) with invasive coronary angiography (ICA) and single photon emission tomography (SPECT) in patients with suspected hemodynamically significant coronary heart disease. Methods At 16 centres, 381 patients were followed for major adverse cardiac events (MACE) for the CORE320 study. All patients underwent coronary CTA, CTP, and SPECT before ICA. Prognostic performance according binary results (normal/abnormal) was assessed by 5-year major cardiovascular events (MACE) free survival and area under the receiver-operating-characteristic curve (AUC). Results Follow up beyond 2-years was available in 323 patients. MACE-free survival rate was greater among patients with normal combined CTA/CTP findings compared to ICA/SPECT: 85 vs. 80% (95% confidence interval [CI] for difference 0.1, 11.3) though event-free survival time was similar (4.54 vs. 4.37 years, 95% CI for difference: 0.03, 0.36). Abnormal results by combined CTA/CTP was associated with 3.83 years event-free survival vs. 3.66 years after abnormal combined ICA/SPECT (95% CI for difference: 0.05, 0.39, CI −1.0, 11.1) (Figure). Predicting MACE by AUC also was similar: 65 vs. 65 (difference 0.1; 95% CI: −4.6, 4.9). When MACE was restricted to death, myocardial infarction, or stroke, AUC for CTA/CTP was 66 vs. 61 by ICA/SPECT (difference 5.1; 95% CI: −7.1, 12.9). Conclusions Combined CTA/CTP yield similar 5-year prognostic performance as joined ICA/SPECT assessment in patients presenting with suspected coronary heart disease and thus may represent a fast, non-invasive alternative to the traditional diagnostic approach. One of the most prevalent joint disorders in the United States, osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by progressive degeneration of articular cartilage, primarily in the hip and knee joints, which results in significant impacts on patient mobility and quality of life. To date, there are no existing curative therapies for OA able to slow down or inhibit cartilage degeneration. Presently, there is an extensive body of ongoing research to understand OA pathology and discover novel therapeutic approaches or agents that can efficiently slow down, stop, or even reverse OA. Thus, it is crucial to have a quantitative and reproducible approach to accurately evaluate OA-associated pathological changes in the joint cartilage, synovium, and subchondral bone. Currently, OA severity and progression are primarily assessed using the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) or Mankin scoring systems. In spite of the importance of these scoring systems, they are semiquantitative and can be influenced by user subjectivity. More importantly, they fail to accurately evaluate subtle, yet important, changes in the cartilage during the early disease states or early treatment phases. The protocol we describe here uses a computerized and semiautomated histomorphometric software system to establish a standardized, rigorous, and reproducible quantitative methodology for the evaluation of joint changes in OA. This protocol presents a powerful addition to the existing systems and allows for more efficient detection of pathological changes in the joint.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a debilitating joint disease characterized by progressive cartilage degeneration, with no available disease-modifying therapy. OA is driven by pathological chondrocyte hypertrophy (CH), the cellular regulators of which are unknown. We have recently reported the therapeutic efficacy of G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2 (GRK2) inhibition in other diseases by recovering protective G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling. However, the role of GPCR-GRK2 pathway in OA is unknown. Thus, in a surgical OA mouse model, we performed genetic GRK2 deletion in chondrocytes or pharmacological inhibition with the repurposed U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved antidepressant paroxetine. Both GRK2 deletion and inhibition prevented CH, abated OA progression, and promoted cartilage regeneration. Supporting experiments with cultured human OA cartilage confirmed the ability of paroxetine to mitigate CH and cartilage degradation. Our findings present elevated GRK2 signaling in chondrocytes as a driver of CH in OA and identify paroxetine as a disease-modifying drug for OA treatment.

In early 2014, continuous monitoring with the Hisaki satellite discovered transient auroral emission at Jupiter during a period when the solar wind was relatively quiet for a few days. Simultaneous imaging made by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) suggested that the transient aurora is associated with a global magnetospheric disturbance that spans from the inner to outer magnetosphere. However, the temporal and spatial evolutions of the magnetospheric disturbance were not resolved because of the lack of continuous monitoring of the transient aurora simultaneously with the imaging. Here we report the coordinated observation of the aurora and plasma torus made by Hisaki and HST during the approach phase of the Juno spacecraft in mid-2016. On day 142, Hisaki detected a transient aurora with a maximum total H2 emission power of ~8.5 TW. The simultaneous HST imaging was indicative of a large “dawn storm,” which is associated with tail reconnection, at the onset of the transient aurora. The outer emission, which is associated with hot plasma injection in the inner magnetosphere, followed the dawn storm within less than two Jupiter rotations. The monitoring of the torus with Hisaki indicated that the hot plasma population increased in the torus during the transient aurora. These results imply that the magnetospheric disturbance is initiated via the tail reconnection and rapidly expands toward the inner magnetosphere, followed by the hot plasma injection reaching the plasma torus. This corresponds to the radially inward transport of the plasma and/or energy from the outer to the inner magnetosphere.

Background The values of n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) like low eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) /arachidonic acid (AA) ratio are known to be associated with cardiovascular events, however their relationship with coronary plaque vulnerability in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is not revealed. Purpose We evaluated the relationship between n-3 and n-6 PUFAs and coronary plaque vulnerability assessed by optical coherence tomography (OCT) in AMI patients. Methods We investigated 79 AMI lesions (51 ST elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) lesions and 28 non-STEMI lesions) that had undergone emergency percutaneous coronary intervention using OCT. Coronary plaque characteristics by OCT were compared with n-3 and n-6 PUFAs values which were measured on admission. Results Of all AMI lesions (n=79), 43 thin-cap fibroatheroma (TCFA) and 35 plaque rapture (PR) were detected by OCT. Lesions with TCFA had no significant relationship with n-3 and n-6 PUFAs values, whereas lesion with PR had significantly lower EPA values than those without (55.8±29.5 vs 74.3±37.1 μg/ml, p=0.018). Median low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol value was 117 (98–137) mg/dl and sub-analysis in patients who had lower LDL cholesterol values than median (n=39) revealed that EPA values were significantly lower in lesions with TCFA (56.3±30.9 vs 85.3±47.7 μg/ml, p=0.03). In STEMI patients, the values of EPA and EPA/AA ratio were significantly lower in lesions with TCFA (EPA: 55.5±22.8 vs 80.8±46.1 μg/ml, p=0.01; EPA/AA ratio: 0.34±0.16 vs 0.50±0.36, p=0.03). STEMI patients who had lower LDL cholesterol values Conclusion This study demonstrated that n-3 and n-6 PUFAs values were associated with coronary plaque vulnerability by OCT in AMI patients, especially in STEMI. These results suggest that n-3 and n-6 PUFAs may be residual risk markers of severe acute cardiovascular events in patients with low LDL cholesterol values.

Background Recent guidelines have stated that reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is the gold standard marker for identifying patients at risk for cardiac mortality. Although reduced LVEF identifies patients at an increased risk of cardiac arrest, sudden cardiac deaths (SCDs) occur considerably more often in patients with relatively preserved LVEF. Current guidelines on SCD risk stratification do not adequately cover this general population pool. Several noninvasive electrocardiographic (ECG) risk stratifiers that reflect depolarization abnormality, repolarization abnormality, and autonomic imbalance have been evaluated so far. With current therapeutic advances using new medicines or devices, an LVEF is often preserved in patients with structural heart disease (SHD). However, the usefulness of noninvasive ECG markers for risk stratification in such a patient population has not yet been elucidated. Purpose This study aimed to assess clinical indices and ECG markers based on 24-hour Holter ECG recordings for predicting cardiac mortality in patients with SHD who have left ventricular dysfunction (LVD) but relatively preserved LVEF. Methods In total, 1,829 patients were enrolled into the Japanese Multicenter Observational Prospective Study (JANIES study). In this study, we analyzed data of 719 patients (569 men, age 64±13 years) with SHD including mainly ischemic heart disease (65.8%). As ECG markers based on 24-hour Holter recordings, nonsustained ventricular tachycardia (NSVT), ventricular late potentials, and heart rate turbulence (HRT) were assessed. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality, and the secondary endpoint was fatal arrhythmic events. Results During a mean follow-up of 21±11 months, all-cause mortality was eventually observed in 39 patients (5.4%). Among those patients, 32 patients (82%) suffered from cardiac causes such as heart failure and arrhythmia. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that after adjustment for age and LVEF, documented NSVT (hazard ratio=2.82, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.38–5.76, P=0.005) and abnormal HRT (hazard ratio=2.31, 95% CI: 1.15–4.65, P=0.02) were significantly associated with the primary endpoint. These two ECG markers also had significant predictive values with the secondary endpoint. The combined assessment documented NSVT and abnormal HRT improved predictive accuracy. Conclusion This study demonstrated that combined assessment of documented NSVT and abnormal HRT based on 24-hour Holter ECG recordings are recommended for predicting future serious events in SHD patients who have relatively preserved LVEF. Introduction Cognitive impairment (CI) is associated with worse prognosis in patients with heart failure, especially in the elderly; however, its incremental prognostic ability in pre-existing prognostic models has not been well elucidated. Moreover, although some tools have been proposed for evaluating cognitive function, their difference in prognostic prediction has not been explicitly compared. Methods A total of 352 heart failure patients aged ≥75 years admitted to three hospitals were evaluated for their cognitive function using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Mini-cog during index hospitalization. We diagnosed CI if MMSE and Mini-cog were ≤23 and ≤2, respectively. The primary endpoint was all-cause death. Results The median age of the entire cohort was 85 (IQR: 80–88) years, and 47.7% of the subjects were male. Based on the MMSE and Mini-cog, the CI was diagnosed in 167 (47.4%) and 159 (45.2%) patients, respectively. The two diagnostic tools showed poor to moderate agreement (Cohen's kappa coefficient: 0.37, 95% CI: 0.27–0.47). During the follow-up period of median 346 (IQR: 195–489) days, 53 patients (15.1%) died. Although the Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that CI diagnosed using Mini-cog (CI-MC) was associated with significantly higher mortality (P=0.001), this association was not significant for CI diagnosed using MMSE (CI-MMSE) (P=0.059). On multivariate Cox regression analysis, CI-MMSE and CI-MC were individually associated with worse prognosis in older heart failure patients even after adjustment for Meta-Analysis Global Group in Chronic Heart Failure (MAGGIC) risk model and log B-type natriuretic peptide levels (CI-MMSE, HR: 2.05 [95% CI: 1.16–3.61]; and CI-MC, HR: 2.57 [95% CI: 1.46–4.53]). The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis for Mini-cog showed significantly higher area under the curve (AUC) than that for MMSE (0.61 vs. 0.52, p=0.045). To test the incremental prognostic capability, models were constructed by individually adding each score to the MAGGIC risk model, and the net reclassification improvement (NRI) and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI) were evaluated. CI-MMSE did not show incremental prognostic predictability (NRI: 0.28, p=0.069; IDI: 0.01, p=0.090), whereas CI-MC (NRI: 0.45, p=0.001; IDI: 0.03, p=0.001) did. Adding CI-MC instead of CI-MMSE to the MAGGIC risk model showed significant reclassification improvement (NRI: 0.45, p=0.002, IDI: 0.02, p=0.041). Conclusion In older patients with heart failure, CI defined by Mini-Cog is superior in providing additive prognostic value than that defined by CI based on MMSE. Small hepatocytes have hepatocyte-like characteristics and high proliferation activity. Most small hepatocyte studies report on in vitro rat or human hepatocytes. Only a few studies of small hepatocytes after bile duct ligation have been reported, and none of these have focused on these cells in birds. In this study, small hepatocytes appearing in bile duct ligation chicken liver were examined using the morphological method with histological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural studies. Nine Boris Brown hens (over 744-d old) were used. In all chickens, both the common hepatoenteric duct and hepatocystic duct were ligated, and the livers were examined 1, 4, 6, 9, and 13 weeks after bile duct ligation. Histologically, the small cells were half the size of normal liver cells, and mitotic figures were often observed. The nuclei showed two forms: large and small. Many small cells were negative for periodic acid-Schiff stain, but positive cells were rarely observed. The cells existed in colonies on the side of the sinusoid of the hepatic lamina. Immunohistochemically, the small cells with large nuclei were strongly positive for CD44, albumin and proliferation cell nuclear antigen, and the cells with small nuclei were weakly positive. In the CD44-positive cell colony, negative cells were often observed to have mature hepatocyte-like morphology. Moreover, many of the cells were PAN cytokeratin negative. Ultrastructurally, the small cells had more nuclei with rich heterochromatin, poor cytoplasmic organelles, and narrow cytoplasm with a high electron density than mature hepatocytes. Moreover, cells having a middle ultrastructural characteristic existed between the small cells and mature hepatocytes. The small hepatocellular colony of the chicken appeared as a regeneration-related change in the liver after bile duct ligation. The cell had high cell proliferation activity and morphological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural characteristics similar to those of the mammalian small hepatocyte, as well as a similar progenitor cell.

Axonal transport is critical for neuronal development and function, and defective axonal transport has been implicated in neurodegenerative diseases. However, how axonal transport is regulated, or how defective transport leads to neuronal degeneration, remains unclear. Here, we report that c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK)/stress-activated protein kinase-associated protein 1 (JSAP1, also known as JNK-interacting protein 3 (JIP3)) and JNK-associated leucine zipper protein (JLP) are essential for postnatal brain development. Mice with a double-knockout (dKO) in Jsap1 and Jlp in the dorsal telencephalon developed progressive neuron loss. Using a primary neuron culture system with induced disruption of targeted genes, combined with gene rescue experiments, we show that JSAP1 and JLP regulate kinesin-1-dependent axonal transport with functional redundancy. We also show that the binding of JSAP1 and JLP to kinesin-1 heavy chain is crucial for interactions between kinesin-1 and microtubules. Furthermore, we describe a molecular mechanism by which defective kinesin-1-dependent axonal transport in Jsap1:Jlp dKO neurons causes axonal degeneration and subsequent neuronal death. JNK hyperactivation because of increased intra-axonal Ca(2+) in the Jsap1:Jlp dKO neurons was found to mediate both the axonal degeneration and neuronal death, in cooperation with the Ca(2+)-dependent protease calpain. Our results indicate that axonal JNK may relocate to the nucleus in a dynein-dependent manner, where it activates the transcription factor c-Jun, resulting in neuronal death. Taken together, our data establish JSAP1 and JLP as positive regulators of kinesin-1-dependent axonal transport, which prevents neuronal degeneration.

SummaryIntroduction Pentra MS CRP is a new automated hematology analyzer that can rapidly and reliably provide 5-part differential of leukocytes (5-Diff) and C-reactive protein (CRP) within approximately 3.5 min using a small volume of whole blood (35 μL). Methods We evaluated the basic performance of Pentra MS CRP and correlations with Sysmex XN-3000, manual microscopic count, and Hitachi LABOSPECT. Results Pentra MS CRP demonstrated good repeatability and linearity without any significant carryover for all parameters examined (WBC, RBC, HGB, Hct, PLT, 5-Diff, and CRP). Complete blood cell count (CBC) data examined by Pentra MS CRP correlated well with those evaluated by Sysmex XN-3000 (R ≥ 0.9880). Absolute number of NEU, LYM, and EOS also showed the good correlation (R ≥ 0.9866) between the two analyzers. The correlation with the manual microscopic count was within acceptable criteria. Furthermore, when CRP was examined in hemolyzed whole blood by Pentra MS CRP and converted to plasma concentrations according to Hct, it correlated well (R = 0.9964) with serum CRP examined by Hitachi LABOSPECT. Conclusion Pentra MS CRP is a convenient and reliable analyzer especially in the emergency unit of hospitals in which the prompt and simultaneous measurement of CBC including 5-Diff and CRP is often necessary.

A planar magnetron sputter type ion source has been operated to investigate metal negative ion production. Radio frequency power at 13.56 MHz was directly supplied to the planar target made of 2 mm thick Cu disk to maintain plasma discharge and induce DC self-bias to the target for sputtering. Beam profile was obtained and the peak of negative ion beam profile was shifted to 6 mm as the beam traversed the 32 mT magnetic field in the region of the plasma grid. Extraction of Cu− beam was performed and the Cu− beam current was found consisted of two components: Cu−(surface) and Cu−(volume). Negative ion spectra were observed to measure the ratio of the surface component to the volume component. Background To clarify the influence of hypertension and blood pressure ( BP ) control on thromboembolism and major hemorrhage in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, a post hoc analysis of the J‐ RHYTHM Registry was performed. Methods and Results A consecutive series of outpatients with atrial fibrillation was enrolled from 158 institutions. Of 7937 patients, 7406 with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (70.8% men, 69.8±10.0 years) were followed for 2 years or until an event occurred. Hypertension was defined as a systolic BP ≥140 mm Hg, a diastolic BP ≥90 mm Hg, a history of hypertension, and/or antihypertensive drug use. Hypertension was an independent risk factor for major hemorrhage (hazard ratio 1.52, 95% CI 1.05–2.21, P =0.027) but not for thromboembolism (hazard ratio 1.05, 95% CI 0.73–1.52, P =0.787). When patients were divided into quartiles according to their systolic BP at the time closest to the event or at the end of follow‐up (Q1, CI 1.75–4.74, P CI 1.02–2.53, P =0.041) after adjustment for components of CHA 2 DS 2 ‐ VAS c score, warfarin use, and antiplatelet use. A systolic BP of ≥136 mm Hg was an independent risk factor for thromboembolism and major hemorrhage. Conclusions BP control appears to be more important than a history of hypertension and baseline BP values at preventing thromboembolism and major hemorrhage in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Giant electromechanical coupling factor of k31 mode over 86% was found for (100) Pb[(Zn1/3Nb2/3)0.91Ti0.09]O3 and (110) Pb[(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.74Ti0.26]O3 single-crystal plates poled in the [100] and [110] directions, respectively. The P-E hysteresis loops in the single-crystal plates with giant k31 became asymmetric. Furthermore, the frequency response of impedance in these plates consisted of a single vibration in the length direction. A mechanism to realize giant k31 can be explained by the relationship between the crystal plane and poling direction. In addition, the existence of giant piezoelectric d31 constant was proven by the strain measurement as well as by the impedance measurement.

Postprandial changes in plasma concentrations of GH, insulin, IGF-I, leptin and metabolites were compared between young Holstein bull calves fed with milk alone (control group) and with milk+5′-uridylic acid (UMP) (UMP group). UMP (2 g/day) was given with milk at 0830 h and 1530 h for 11 days from the 4th to the 14th day after birth. The perirenal fat weight was significantly lower in the UMP group than in the control group, but there was no significant difference in the weights of the liver, spleen and heart between the groups. Basal GH concentrations in the UMP group were slightly higher, but the postprandial increase in plasma insulin level and the area under the curve for insulin in the UMP group were significantly lower than those in the control group. There was no significant difference in IGF-I levels between the groups. In addition, the postprandial glucose concentrations were lower in the UMP group as reflected by the insulin level, and nonesterified fatty acid concentrations were not different. In the muscle (M. longissimus thoracis) sampled at 14 days of age, the triacylglycerol (TAG) content was significantly greater but glycogen content was significantly lower in the UMP group than in the control group. From these results, we have concluded that feeding 5′-UMP at 2 g/day for 11 days significantly alters TAG accumulation in the body and plasma concentrations of GH and insulin in young bull calves.

Applications in nuclear medicine and bio-medical engineering may profit using a Compton camera for imaging distributions of radio-isotope labelled tracers in organs and tissues. These applications require detection of photons using thick position-sensitive silicon sensors with the highest possible energy and good spatial resolution. In this paper, research and development on silicon pad sensors and associated readout electronics for a Compton camera are presented. First results with low-noise, self-triggering VATAGP ASIC's are reported. The measured energy resolution was 1.1 keV FWHM at room temperature for the 241 Am photo-peak at 59.5 keV .

A flat-plate concentrator (FPC) module has been proposed and developed for cost reduction of PV modules. The FPC has V-grooved rear reflectors on spaces between adjacent cells. To find appropriate design parameters, yearly optical performance is simulated by using meteorological data and introducing a performance index. As a result of the simulation, it is shown that the FPC module can reduce occupation area of solar cells to 75% compared with that of a conventional module, although its module area increases to 1.16 times. Several prototypes are fabricated and measured under a solar simulator. The measured results are somewhat lower than the simulated ones, but generally show the validity of the simulation.

A light-trapping type concentrator module with a new asymmetric V-groove structure at the rear surface is proposed to improve the performance of static concentrator module. Fundamental optical properties of various asymmetric V-grooves are calculated using a ray-tracing method. Based on these results, yearly integrated irradiance ratios of the concentrator module to a conventional flat-plate module are calculated using meteorological data. By the use of Ag as a reflection material, yearly integrated irradiance ratio of concentrator module with an asymmetric V-groove is 1.34, and the occupation area of Si cells in a module can be reduced to 74% compared with a conventional flat-plate module.
