A record low horizontal emittance of 1 nm-rad was successfully obtained in PETRA III third generation synchrotron light source. A key system that allowed reaching such value includes 20 permanent magnet damping wigglers installed in two long straight sections. The wigglers radiate almost 1 MW at maximum current of hard X-ray radiation which issues a challenge for the design of SR absorbers and vacuum system components for the damping wiggler section. The paper describes in detail the design consideration, manufacturing and experimental performance of absorbers and vacuum system. The first experimental results of PETRA III damping wiggler section operation are presented.

The superconducting linear accelerator of the TESLA Test Facility (TTF) at DESY/Hamburg is running successfully since several years. The main focus was so far on machine developments as well as on a proof of principle experiment for a self amplifying spontaneous emission free electron laser (SASE FEL) for the proposed 500 GeV e + e − linear collider TESLA with integrated X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) laboratory. Presently, the machine is substantially modified to become a VUV-FEL user facility with tunable wavelengths in the nm range within 2004. The beam pipe of the accelerator contains sections operated at room temperature as well as at 2 K in the areas of the superconducting structures used for acceleration of the beam. Three cryogenic modules, each containing 8 solid niobium cavities have been tested. In addition to standard UHV requirements, the vacuum system for this machine needs to preserve the cleanliness of the superconducting cavity surfaces. Thus the preparation of all vacuum components includes cleaning steps to remove particle contaminations, installation of components into the machine under local clean rooms and special procedures for pump down and venting.

A new cleaning facility has been installed at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY in Hamburg to prepare UHV components hydrocarbon and particle free. Both requirements are important for accelerators using superconducting accelerating structures with high gradients as well as for optical components like mirrors used for the transport of intense photon beams in synchrotron radiation beamlines. The goal of this facility is to combine standard cleaning techniques with latest clean room technology in a manageable way. Thus the new cleaning facility is installed in a clean room which fulfils class 10,000 and in its central part class 100 specifications. 1 The cleaning process following the standard UHV cleaning steps consists of a fine degreasing of the components in an ultrasonic bath. For rinsing ultra pure water 2 is used. Finally the components are dried using up to 110°C hot filtered air (according to clean room class 100 requirements). Comparable cleaning results for small components are achieved using a dishwasher, which is loaded from outside the clean room. Vacuum chambers of up to 4.8 m length can be treated. A small preassembly area equipped with an oil free pumping station for leak detection and residual gas analysis completes the facility.

Among the different approaches towards a next generation 500 GeV e + e − linear collider, the TESLA design uses superconducting accelerating structures operating at 1.3 GHz with a gradient of 25 MV/m. Presently, the TESLA test facility, which includes a prototype linear accelerator with superconducting cavities, is build up at DESY/Hamburg to serve as an R&D tool. First, electrons have been accelerated in spring 1997. In the present state of the project two cryomodules, each containing eight solid niobium cavities are installed. One of the major objectives for the beam vacuum system is to preserve the cleanliness of the superconducting cavity surfaces and thus the operation at high gradients and high Q. Contamination by any sort of dust or condensation of gases during assembly and operation has to be absolutely avoided. Thus all vacuum components are carefully cleaned in clean rooms to make them particle free. Local clean rooms are used for installation of the components into the linac. A description of the linac vacuum system, the running experience and the present status of the project is given.

DESY pursues a luminosity upgrade project for the HERA electron–proton collider that foresees an increase of the luminosity by nearly a factor of 5. This is achieved mainly by a completely new layout of the interaction region. The new scheme involves a very early separation of the colliding beams by means of superconducting magnets that are installed inside the experimental detectors. The early beam separation allows the final focus quadrupoles to be located closer to the interaction point (IP), which in turn leads to smaller beam spot-sizes and higher luminosity. The HERA upgrade requires the whole vacuum system in the interaction regions of the machine to be rebuilt. This amounts to about 400 m length of new electron, proton and common vacuum system. The requirements for the vacuum quality were raised in comparison to the present machine, because electrons that lost energy due to beam–gas interactions will be mainly deflected into the detector beam pipes by the superconducting separation magnets. At all possible locations we have foreseen to install NEG pumps. Another critical point is the safe handling of about 30 kW synchrotron radiation power, produced by the separation magnets in the detectors. An overview on the project is presented and some critical issues are discussed with emphasis.

During the run 1998/1999 a new injector based on a laser-driven RF gun was brought in operation at the TESLA Test Facility (TTF) linac at DESY, in order to produce the beam structure and quality required either by TeV collider and SASE FEL experiments. High quantum efficiency cesium telluride photocathodes, prepared at Milano and transferred to DESY, have been successfully operated in the RF gun. A bunch charge of 50 nC, only limited by space charge effects, was achieved. The photocathodes have shown an operative lifetime of several months. A new cathode surface finishing has showed a promising decrease of the photocathode dark current. Measurements of dark current, quantum efficiency and lifetime are reported.

Exclusive incoherent electroproduction of the ρ0(770) meson from 1H, 2H, 3He, and 14N targets has been studied by the HERMES experiment at squared four-momentum transfer Q^2>0.4 GeV^2 and positron energy loss ν from 9 to 20 GeV. The ratio of the 14N to 1H cross sections per nucleon, known as the nuclear transparency, was found to decrease with increasing coherence length of quark-antiquark fluctuations of the virtual photon. The data provide clear evidence of the interaction of the quark-antiquark fluctuations with the nuclear medium.

Spin-polarised atomic hydrogen is used as a gaseous polarised proton target in high energy and nuclear physics experiments operating with internal beams in storage rings. When such beams are intense and bunched, this type of target can be depolarised by a resonant interaction with the transient magnetic field generated by the beam bunches. This effect has been studied with the HERA positron beam in the HERMES experiment at DESY. Resonances have been observed and a simple analytic model has been used to explain their shape and position. Operating conditions for the experiment have been found where there is no significant target depolarisation due to this effect., REVTEX, 6 pages, 5 figures

The HERMES experiment is investigating the spin structure of the proton and neutron via deep-inelastic scattering of polarized positrons from polarized nuclear targets. The polarized positrons are provided by the HERA positron storage ring at DESY, Hamburg, Germany. The targets are pure internal gas targets. Data acquisition began in 1995, utilizing a polarized 3 He internal gas target to study the spin structure of the neutron. The target gas was polarized using the metastability-exchange optical-pumping technique and then injected into a cryogenically cooled target cell. The target was designed to operate with either longitudinal or transverse directions of polarization. Operating conditions included polarizations of up to 54% and target thicknesses of 1×10 15 nucleons/cm 2 . In this paper the HERMES polarized 3 He internal gas target is described in detail.

The HERMES experiment is collecting data on inclusive and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of polarised positrons from polarised targets of H, D, and He. These data give information on the spin structure of the nucleon. This paper describes the forward angle spectrometer built for this purpose. The spectrometer includes numerous tracking chambers (micro-strip gas chambers, drift and proportional chambers) in front of and behind a 1.3 T.m magnetic field, as well as an extensive set of detectors for particle identification (a lead-glass calorimeter, a pre-shower detector, a transition radiation detector, and a threshold Cherenkov detector). Two of the main features of the spectrometer are its good acceptance and identification of both positrons and hadrons, in particular pions. These characteristics, together with the purity of the targets, are allowing HERMES to make unique contributions to the understanding of how the spins of the quarks contribute to the spin of the nucleon., 37 pages, 32 figures, 4 tables

Results are reported from the HERMES experiment at HERA on a measurement of the neutron spin structure function g1n(x, Q2) in deep inelastic scattering using 27.5 GeV longitudinally polarized positrons incident on a polarized 3He internal gas target. The data cover the kinematic range 0.023

A high-density target of polarized atomic hydrogen gas for applications in storage rings was produced by injecting atoms from an atomic beam source into a T-shaped storage cell. The influence of the internal gas target on electron-cooled beams of 27 MeV α-particles and 23 MeV protons in the Heidelberg Test Storage Ring has been studied in detail. Target polarization and target thickness were measured by means of 27 MeV α-particles. For hyperfine states 1 + 2 a target thickness of n = (0.96±0.04) × 1014H→/cm2 was achieved with the cell walls cooled to 100 K. Working with a weak magnetic holding field (≈5 G) the maximum target polarization was PT = 0.84±0.02 when state 1 and PT = 0.46±0.01 when states 1 + 2 were injected. The target polarization was found to be constant over a period of 3 months with a net charge of Q ≈ 100C passing the storage cell.

A pair of spin rotators has been installed in the electron ring of HERA. Longitudinal spin polarizations up to 65% have been reached reproducibly during dedicated measurement time. This is the first time that longitudinal spin polarization has been produced in a high energy electron storage ring.

A target of gaseous polarized hydrogen was formed by injecting polarized hydrogen atoms (produced by Stern–Gerlach spin separation) into a storage cell consisting of a cylindrical tube open at both ends. The target was placed in a storage ring to study the target characteristics (nuclear polarization, target thickness, radiation resistance). A weak transverse guide field (5 G) was applied to define the polarization direction. When atoms in a single hyperfine state were selected, the nuclear polarization of the target was measured to be 0.80±0.02. The areal density of the target under these conditions was (5.5±0.2)×1013 H/cm2, while for two spin states (applicable to experiments in high energy rings where a strong magnetic field can be applied to the target) the target thickness was found to be (8.2±0.3)×1013 H/cm2. The target polarization was unaffected by prolonged exposure of the target to beams up to 1 mA.

The FILTEX/HERMES atomic beam source (ABS) for polarized hydrogen is described. Recent improvements concern mainly the optimization of the beam forming system and a new design of the sextupole magnet system. For a precise measurement (error 5%) of the output flow a calibrated compression tube was installed. The output flow of 0.81×1017 H atoms per second in two hyperfine substates was constant within 2% in a long-term measurement over 16 h. At the FILTEX test experiment, the target density in the storage cell fed by the ABS was constant within the experimental error of 4% over a period of four months.

This paper describes the progress made in 1992 towards increasing the vertical electron beam polarization at HERA. Utilizing harmonic spin-orbit corrections and beam tuning, the vertical polarization has been increased from 15% to nearly 60% at a beam energy of 26.7 GeV. The long-term reproducibility of the polarization is excellent. Measurements of the build-up time and the energy dependence of the polarization are also described.

The nuclear polarization of spin-polarized hydrogen gas targets can be measured using the spin coupling of electron and nucleus in the hydrogen atom. The polarized target atoms are excited by electron impact at low energy. Due to fine and hyperfine interaction the spin polarization of electron and proton is partially transferred to circular polarization of the emitted Hα-light. In a weak magnetic field the light polarization is proportional to the initial nuclear polarization with a measured analyzing power of 0.33 ± 0.03. The simple principle allows a compact polarimeter setup. It can be used as target polarization monitor, e.g., for targets at low energy storage rings where weak guide fields at the target are required.

A polarized hydrogen gas target for use in storage rings has been developed. One application may be the production of a stored polarized antiproton beam via spin dependent attenuation which would allow a study of the spin-dependence of antiproton-proton interactions. In order to increase the target thickness compared to jet targets the polarized hydrogen atoms are injected into a T-shaped storage cell. Polarization and density of the target have been measured in a test experiment by elastic scattering of an α-beam from the Heidelberg MP-tandem accelerator. The target polarization amounts to 83±8% of the maximum possible value. The target areal density of n = (2.6±0.1±0.2) × 10 13 H / cm 2 is consistent with the density calculated from the measured H beam intensity.

The European X-ray Free Electron Laser XFEL, a new international research facility, will be built at DESY/Hamburg. The XFEL will generate extremely brilliant and ultra short pulses of spatially coherent X-rays with tuneable wavelengths down to 0.1 nm, and exploit them for revolutionary scientific experiments at various disciplines. The basic process adopted to produce the X-ray pulses is SASE (Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission). Therefore electron bunches are produced in a high-brightness gun, brought to high energy of about 20 GeV through a superconducting linear accelerator, and transported to up to 250 m long undulators, where the X-rays are generated. The beam vacuum system of the accelerator contains sections operated at room temperature as well as at 2 K in the areas of the superconducting accelerating structures, thus requiring an insulating vacuum system. In addition to standard UHV requirements, the vacuum system for this facility needs to preserve the cleanliness of the superconducting cavity surfaces. Therefore the preparation of all vacuum components for the 1.6 km long main linac includes cleaning of the components in a clean room to remove particles, installation into the accelerator in local clean rooms, and special procedures for pump down and venting. Further challenges are the undulator vacuum chambers filling more than 700 m, where a high surface quality with respect to surface roughness and thickness of oxide layers is mandatory to reduce wake field effects, and the vacuum systems for the various beam dumps, where exit windows acting as vacuum barriers of sufficient reliability need to be developed. In addition, a large amount of about 1.7 km of transport beam lines is required. The layout of the various vacuum sections as well as experience with prototype components will be described.

A high resolution Beam Position Monitor (BPM) is necessary for the beam‐based alignment systems of high energy and low emittance electron linacs. Such a monitor is developed in the framework of the European CARE/SRF programme, in a close collaboration between DESY and CEA/DSM/DAPNIA. This monitor is a radiofrequency re‐entrant cavity, which can be used either at room or cryogenic temperature, in an environment where dust particle contamination has to be avoided, such as superconducting cavities in a cryomodule. A first prototype of a re‐entrant BPM has already delivered measurements at 2K. inside the first cryomodule (ACC1) on the TESLA Test Facility 2 (TTF2). The performances of this BPM are analyzed both experimentally and theoretically, and the limitations of this existing system clearly identified. A new cavity and new electronics have been designed in order to improve the position resolution down to 1 μm and the damping time down to 10 ns.

Mushroom billiards have the remarkable property to show one or more clear cut integrable islands in one or several chaotic seas, without any fractal boundaries. The islands correspond to orbits confined to the hats of the mushrooms, which they share with the chaotic orbits. It is thus interesting to ask how long a chaotic orbit will remain in the hat before returning to the stem. This question is equivalent to the inquiry about delay times for scattering from the hat of the mushroom into an opening where the stem should be. For fixed angular momentum we find that no more than three different delay times are possible. This induces striking nonperiodic structures in the delay times that may be of importance for mesoscopic devices and should be accessible to microwave experiments., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. Published online 16 November 2005 Groupe SERA; Many scientific disciplines ranging from physics, chemistry and biology to material sciences, geophysics and medical diagnostics need a powerful X-ray source with pulse lengths in the femtosecond range [1-4]. This would allow, for example, time-resolved observation of chemical reactions with atomic resolution. Such radiation of extreme intensity, and tunable over a wide range of wavelengths, can be accomplished using high-gain free-electron lasers (FEL) [5-10]. Here we present results of the first successful operation of an FEL at a wavelength of 32 nm, with ultra-short pulses (25 fs FWHM), a peak power at the Gigawatt level, and a high degree of transverse and longitudinal coherence. The experimental data are in full agreement with theory. This is the shortest wavelength achieved with an FEL to date and an important milestone towards a user facility designed for wavelengths down to 6 nm. With a peak brilliance exceeding the state-of-the-art of synchrotron radiation sources [4] by seven orders of magnitude, this device opens a new field of experiments, and it paves the way towards sources with even shorter wavelengths, such as the Linac Coherent Light Source [3] at Stanford, USA, and the European X-ray Free Electron Laser Facility [4] in Hamburg, Germany.

We present experimental evidence that the free-electron laser at the TESLA Test Facility has reached the maximum power gain of 107 in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) region at wavelengths between 80 and 120 nm. At saturation the FEL emits short pulses with GW peak power and a high degree of transverse coherence. The radiation pulse length can be adjusted between 30 fs and 100 fs. Radiation spectra and fluctuation properties agree with the theory of high gain, single-pass free-electron lasers starting from shot noise.

The conceptional design of the proposed linear electron-positron collider TESLA is based on 9-cell 1.3 GHz superconducting niobium cavities with an accelerating gradient of ${E}_{\mathrm{acc}}\ensuremath{\ge}25\mathrm{MV}/\mathrm{m}$ at a quality factor ${Q}_{0}\ensuremath{\ge}5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{9}$. The design goal for the cavities of the TESLA Test Facility (TTF) linac was set to the more moderate value of ${E}_{\mathrm{acc}}\ensuremath{\ge}15\mathrm{MV}/\mathrm{m}$. In a first series of 27 industrially produced TTF cavities the average gradient at ${Q}_{0}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{9}$ was measured to be $20.1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}6.2\mathrm{MV}/\mathrm{m}$, excluding a few cavities suffering from serious fabrication or material defects. In the second production of 24 TTF cavities, additional quality control measures were introduced, in particular, an eddy-current scan to eliminate niobium sheets with foreign material inclusions and stringent prescriptions for carrying out the electron-beam welds. The average gradient of these cavities at ${Q}_{0}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{9}$ amounts to $25.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}3.2\mathrm{MV}/\mathrm{m}$ with the exception of one cavity suffering from a weld defect. Hence only a moderate improvement in production and preparation techniques will be needed to meet the ambitious TESLA goal with an adequate safety margin. In this paper we present a detailed description of the design, fabrication, and preparation of the TESLA Test Facility cavities and their associated components and report on cavity performance in test cryostats and with electron beam in the TTF linac. The ongoing research and development towards higher gradients is briefly addressed.

We present the first observation of Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) in a free-electron laser (FEL) in the Vacuum Ultraviolet regime at 109 nm wavelength (11 eV). The observed free-electron laser gain (approx. 3000) and the radiation characteristics, such as dependency on bunch charge, angular distribution, spectral width and intensity fluctuations all corroborate the existing models for SASE FELs., 6 pages including 6 figures; e-mail: joerg.rossbach@desy.de

The virtual photon absorption cross section differences [sigma_1/2-sigma_3/2] for the proton and neutron have been determined from measurements of polarised cross section asymmetries in deep inelastic scattering of 27.5 GeV longitudinally polarised positrons from polarised 1H and 3He internal gas targets. The data were collected in the region above the nucleon resonances in the kinematic range nu < 23.5 GeV and 0.8 GeV**2 < Q**2 < 12 GeV**2. For the proton the contribution to the generalised Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral was found to be substantial and must be included for an accurate determination of the full integral. Furthermore the data are consistent with a QCD next-to-leading order fit based on previous deep inelastic scattering data. A storage cell target of polarized hydrogen gas was installed in a storage ring to study the target characteristics (nuclear polarization, target thickness, radiation resistance). The density of the target gas was enhanced by cooling the cell. Using a weak transverse guide field (5 G), the nuclear polarization of the target was measured to be 0.80±0.02 when atoms in a single hyperfine state were selected. The areal density of the target under these conditions was 5.5⋅1013 H↘/cm2 (T=115 K), while for two spin states (applicable to experiments in high energy rings, where a strong magnetic field can be applied to the target) the target thickness was found to be 8.2⋅1013 H↘/cm2.

The stored particles, here protons, pass through a polarized hydrogen gas target (thickness 6×1013 H/cm2) in the ring some 1010 times and become partially polarized because one spin state is attenuated faster than the other. The polarization buildup is clearly demonstrated in the present experiment., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

Electron spin polarizations of about 8% were observed at HERA in November 1991. In runs during 1992, utilizing special orbit corrections, polarization values close to 60% have been achieved. In this paper the polarimeter, the machine conditions, the data analysis, the first results and plans for future measurements are described.

This article treats chaotic scattering with three degrees of freedom, where one of them is open and the other two are closed, as a first step towards a more general understanding of chaotic scattering in higher dimensions. Despite the strong restrictions, it breaks the essential simplicity implicit in any two-dimensional time-independent scattering problem. Introducing the third degree of freedom by breaking a continuous symmetry, we first explore the topological structure of the homoclinic/heteroclinic tangle and the structures in the scattering functions. Then we work out the implications of these structures for the doubly differential cross section. The most prominent structures in the cross section are rainbow singularities. They form a fractal pattern that reflects the fractal structure of the chaotic invariant set. This allows us to determine structures in the cross section from the invariant set and, conversely, to obtain information about the topology of the invariant set from the cross section. The latter is a contribution to the inverse scattering problem for chaotic systems.

To polarize circulating antiprotons in a storage ring a gas target of polarized hydrogen will be used. The gas will be injected into a T-shaped storage cell to increase the target thickness. The status of the storage cell for a test experiment with protons instead of antiprotons in the Heidelberg Test Storage Ring TSR is reported.

For measurements of the spin dependence in pp interaction it has been proposed to polarize antiprotons by inserting a gas target of polarized hydrogen into the LEAR ring. The polarized target acts as an antiproton spin filter, provided the pp total cross section is spin dependent. The filter method will be tested with protons instead of antiprotons in the Heidelberg Test Storage Ring TSR. The status of the components for this test experiment is reported.

Within the next two years the 2.3 km long storage ring PETRA will be rebuild into one of the most brilliant x-ray sources worldwide (PETRA III). The large bending radius and the use of damping wigglers allow to achieve small beam emittances and extremely brilliant x-ray beams. In this paper we describe the design and the expected performance of the vacuum system for the storage ring. It consists of standard arc sections, an experimental octant which is equipped with undulators and several straight sections that include the damping wigglers. Because of the long length of the storage ring a cost effective solution had to be found. Besides the requirement to quickly provide acceptable residual gas pressures the technical challenges of the system include the provision of high thermal stability with respect to magnets and BPM's, and the design of thin walled insertion device chambers as well as high power synchrotron radiation absorbers.

Es gibt nach wie vor Lucken im Verstandnis der Kernreaktionen bei mittleren Energien etwa unterhalb der Schwelle zur Mesonenerzeugung und oberhalb der Bindungsenergien der Nukleonen in den Atomkernen. Oft werden hier die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Kernen und zwischen Nukleonen mit Potentialmodellen beschrieben, die auf dem Austausch eines oder mehrerer Mesonen basieren. Dabei ergeben sich auch Spinabhangigkeiten, wie zum Beispiel im sogenannten ‚Paris-Potential’ [1] oder im ‚Bonn-Potential’ [2].

We report experimental results of a stored proton beam polarized by sp dependent attenuation through a high density polarized hydrogen target. The experiment was carried out at the Heidelberg low energy Test Storage Ring. The polarized hydrogen storage cell gas target consisted of polarized hydrogen atoms produced by the Heidelberg atomic beam source injected into a thin walled, cylindrical aluminum tube. (AIP)
