Abstract

A partial wave analysis of the centrally produced π 0 π 0 channel has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. An unambiguous physical solution has been found. Evidence is found for the f 0 (980), f 0 (1300) and f 0 (1500) in the the S -wave. and the f 2 (1270) is observed dominantly in the D 0 − -wave. In addition, there is evidence for a broad enhancement in the D -wave below 1 GeV.

Abstract

Recent results from the CERN Omega spectrometer on the enhancement of strange and multiply strange particle production in nucleus-nucleus with respect to proton-nucleus collisions are summarized. In particular, the new data from the WA97 experiment on Ω, Ξ and Λ production in PbPb and p-Pb collisions are presented and discussed.

Abstract

A study of the reactions pp -> pfps(K+K-pi+pi-) and pp -> pfps(K+K-pi+pi-pi0) shows evidence for the K*K* and phi omega channels respectively. The K*K* mass spectrum shows a broad distribution with a maximum near threshold and an angular analysis shows that it is compatible with having JP = 2+. The behaviour of the cross-section as a function of centre of mass energy, and the four momentum transfer dependence, are compatible with what would be expected if the K*K* system was produced via double Pomeron exchange. The dPT behaviour of the phi omega channel is similar to what has been observed for all the undisputed qqbar states. In contrast, the dPT behaviour of the K*K* final state is similar to what has been observed for the phi phi final state and for previously observed glueball candidates.

Abstract

A study has been made of pseudoscalar mesons produced centrally in pp interactions. The results show that the eta and etaprime appear to have a similar production mechanism which differs from that of the pi0. The production properties of the eta and etaprime are not consistent with what is expected from double Pomeron exchange. In addition the production mechanism for the eta and etaprime is such that the production cross section are greatest when the azimuthal angle between the pT vectors of the two protons is 90 degrees., 11 pages, Latex, 3 Figures

Abstract

Charged particle production in central S-S collisions at 200 GeV/c per nucleon has been studied by the WA94 experiment at the CERN-SPS. Particle identification has been provided by the Omega RICH, while a silicon telescope in the Omega spectrometer and an array of MultiWire Proportional Chambers have been used to trace particles through the RICH detector. Production ratios and transverse mass spectra for π±, K± and p( p ) at central rapidity and pT > 1.3 GeV/c are presented.

Abstract

The WA94 collaboration uses the production of strange and anti-strange particles to investigate the properties of hot hadronic matter created in heavy-ion interactions. Λ,\(\bar \Lambda \), Ξ− and\(\bar \Xi ^ + \) particle yields and transverse mass spectra are presented for pS interactions and are compared with those for SS interactions and for the pW and SW interactions of WA85.

Abstract

Preliminary results from WA97 measurements on Λ, Ξ and Ω production in lead-lead and proton-lead collisions are presented, along with a comparison of WA97 proton-lead data with previous WA85 proton-tungsten results. The ratio Ω/Ξ seems to be enhanced in lead initiated reactions compared to proton initiated reactions.

Abstract

Central \pipi events produced in pp interactions are studied in terms of correlations between the outgoing protons. It is observed there is more $\rho^{0}$(770) and \fmeson production in reactions where the outgoing protons %fastest and slowest particles in the laboratory frame are on opposite sides of the beam. This effect is not attributable to the trigger or the experimental acceptance, and suggests that the vertices do not factorise.

Abstract

An analysis of the centrally produced π + π − and π + π − π + π − mass spectra from the WA76 and WA91 experiments is presented, which shows that in the π + π − π + π − channel there are two new states, the f 0 (1450) and f 2 (1900). There is another new state in the π + π − channel with M = 1497 ± 30 MeV and Γ = 199 ± 30 MeV, which is compatible with the f 0 (1520) observed by the Crystal Barrel experiment. Another interpretation is discussed, where the 1450 and 1497 GeV structures are explained as being due to an interference effect between the f 0 (1365) and f 0 (1520).

Abstract

The reaction pp → pƒ(π + π − π + π − )p s has been studied at 450 GeV/c in an experiment designed to search for gluonic states. In addition to the well known ƒ 1 (1285) , the π+π−π+π− mass spectrum shows evidence for two states pre only observed by the WA76 experiment, the X(1450) and X(1900). An analysis of the X(1450) shows that it is a relatively narrow state (Γ = 56 ± 12 MeV) with I(JPC) = 0(0++) which decays to ϱ0π+π−. The X (1900) could either b single broad state (Γ = 370±70 MeV) with I(JPC) = 0(2++) or possibly separate states.

Abstract

The Ball Micromission Spacecraft (MSC) is a multi-purpose platform capable of supporting science missions at distances from the Sun ranging from 0.7 to 1.7 AU. In the baseline scenario, MSC is launched as a secondary payload on an Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou, French Guyana, to GTO using the Ariane 5 structure for auxiliary payloads. The maximum launch wet mass is 242 kg and can include up to 45 kg of payload depending on /spl Delta/V needs. The on-board propulsion system is used for maneuvering in the Earth-Moon system and injecting the spacecraft into its final orbit or trajectory. For Mars missions, MSC enables orbiting Mars for science payloads and/or communications and navigation assets, or for precision Mars flybys to drop up to six probes. The micromissions spacecraft bus can be used for science targets other than Mars, including the Moon, Earth, Venus, Earth-Sun Lagrange points, or other small bodies. This paper summarizes the current spacecraft concept and describes the multimission spacecraft bus implementation in more detail.

Abstract

A partial wave analysis of the centrally produced K+K- and K0K0 channels has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. An unambiguous physical solution has been found in each channel. The striking feature is the observation of peaks in the S-wave corresponding to the f0(1500) and fJ(1710) with J = 0. The D-wave shows evidence for the f2(1270)/a2(1320), the f2(1525) and the f2(2150) but there is no evidence for a statistically significant contribution in the D-wave in the 1.7 GeV mass region., Comment: 15 pages, Latex, 5 Figures

Abstract

A study of the centrally produced ppbar, ppbarpi, ppbarpipi and lambda lambda channels has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. No significant new structures are observed in the mass spectra, however, important new information on the production dynamics is obtained. Abstract

The series of experiments (WA85, WA94 and WA97) at the Omega spectrometer at CERN SPS have systematically studied the production of different strange particles. Strangeness enhancements at central rapidities have been reported by WA85 and WA94 in S-W and SS with respect to p-A collisions. For the investigation of PbPb interactions in the WA97 experiment a new detector suitable for high particle densities, the Pixel Tracking Chamber, has been developed based on silicon pixel detectors. The results on production ratios and cross sections of Λ, Λ , Ξ − , Ξ + , Ω − and Ω + detected by this experiment are presented. A significant enhancement of the Ω over Ξ ratio is observed when comparing p-Pb to PbPb data (a factor of about 3).

Abstract

The reaction pp to pfps(K+K-K+K-) in which the K+K-K+K- system is centrally produced has been studied at 450 GeV/c. Phi phi production has been found to dominate this reaction and is compatible with being produced by double Pomeron exchange. The reaction pp -> pf (pi+pi-pi+pi-) ps has been studied at 450 GeV/c in an experiment designed to search for gluonic states. A spin analysis has been performed and the dPT filter applied. In addition to the well known f1(1285) there is evidence for two JPC=2-+ states called the eta2(1620) and eta2(1875) and a broad scalar called the f0(2000). The production of these states as a function of the dPT kinematical filter shows the behaviour expected for qqbar states. In contrast, there is evidence for two states at 1.45 GeV and at 1.9 GeV which do not show the behaviour observed for qqbar states. Abstract

The WA94 experiment uses the production of strange particles and antiparticles to investigate the properties of hot hadronic matter created in heavy-ion interactions. Λ, Λ , Ξ− and Ξ + particle yields and transverse mass spectra are presented for pS interactions. These results are compared with those from SS interactions. Our results are also compared with those from pW and SW interactions of the WA85 experiment.

Abstract

Results are presented of an analysis of the reactions pp -> pf(k0k+pi-)ps and pp -> pf(K0K0pi0)ps at 450 GeV/c. Clear f1(1285) and f1(1420) signals are seen and a spin parity analysis shows that both have IG JPC=0+ 1++. The f1(1285) decays to a0(980)pi and the f1(1420) decays to K* Kbar. Both states have a similar dependence as a function of dPT consistent with what has been observed for other qqbar states. A study of central meson production as a function of the difference in transverse momentum ($dP_T$) of the exchanged particles shows that undisputed $q \overline q$ mesons are suppressed at small $dP_T$ whereas the glueball candidates are enhanced.

Abstract

Preliminary results from WA97 measurements on Λ, Ξ and Ω production in lead-lead and proton-lead collisions are presented, along with a comparison of WA97 proton-lead data with previous WA85 proton-tungsten results. The ratio Ω gX seems to be enhanced in lead initiated reactions compared to proton initiated reactions.

Strange and multistrange baryon and antibaryon production has been studied in sulphur sulphur interactions at 200 GeV/c per nucleon at central rapidity using the CERN Omega Spectrometer. Particle production ratios and transverse mass spectra are presented for Λ, Ξ−, Λ and Ξ−.

Abstract

WA97 is designed to study strange and multi-strange baryon and anti-baryon production in 160 A GeV c PbPb collisions at the SPS with a telescope of silicon microdetectors. Four planes of silicon pixel detectors were successfully employed during the 1994 Pb run. A total of 60M central PbPb events were collected. We describe the experimental setup and report on some preliminary results from the off-line analysis.

SCOPUS - ISI?; International audience; One of the continuing challenges of Human Computer Interaction research is the full inclusion of people with special needs into the digital world. In particular, this crucial category includes people that experiences some kind of limitation in exploiting traditional information communication channels. One immediately thinks about blind people, and several researches aim at addressing their needs. On the contrary, limitations suffered by deaf people are often underestimated. This often the result of a kind of ignorance or misunderstanding of the real nature of their communication difficulties. This chapter aims at both increasing the awareness of deaf problems in the digital world, and at proposing the project of a comprehensive solution for their better inclusion. As for the former goal, we will provide a bird’s-eye presentation of history and evolution of understanding of deafness issues, and of strategies to address them. As for the latter, we will present the design, implementation and evaluation of the first nucleus of a comprehensive digital framework to facilitate the access of deaf people into the digital world.; Un des défis encore ouverts de la recherche sur l’interaction homme-machine est la pleine intégration des personnes à besoins spécifiques dans le monde numérique. En particulier, cette catégorie comprend les personnes que ont des limitations à exploiter les canaux traditionnels de communication de l'information. On pense immédiatement aux aveugles, et en effet plusieurs recherches visent à répondre à leurs besoins. Au contraire, les limitations subies par les personnes sourdes sont souvent sous-estimés; cela dépend souvent d’une sorte d'ignorance ou d'incompréhension de la véritable nature de leurs difficultés de communication. Ce chapitre vise à la fois à augmenter la prise de conscience des problèmes de sourds dans le monde numérique et à proposer un projet global pour améliorer leur intégration. En réponse au premier objectif, nous allons fournir une présentation rapide de l'histoire et de l'évolution de la compréhension des problèmes liés à la surdité, et des stratégies pour y faire face. Quant au deuxième, nous présentons la conception, la mise en œuvre et l'évaluation du premier noyau d'un ensemble digitale complet né pour faciliter l'accès au monde numérique des personnes sourdes.; Una delle sfide di ricerca ancora aperte nell’ambito della interazione uomo-computer è la completa integrazione delle persone con bisogni speciali nel mondo digitale. Vengono subito in mente i non-vedenti, ed infatti parecchi studi mirano a fronteggiare le loro esigenze. Al contrario, le limitazioni sofferte dalle persone sorde sono spesso sottovalutate; questo dipende spesso da una sorta di ignoranza o incomprensione della vera natura delle loro difficoltà di comunicazione. Questo capitolo si propone sia di aumentare la consapevolezza dei problemi dei sordi nel mondo digitale, sia di offrire il progetto globale volto a migliorare la loro integrazione. Per quanto riguarda il primo obiettivo, esso fornirà uno sguardo alla storia ed alla evoluzione della comprensione delle questioni legate alla sordità, e delle strategie per affrontarle. Per quanto riguarda il secondo aspetto, verrà presentata la progettazione, attuazione e valutazione del primo nucleo di un contesto digitale completo nato per facilitare l'accesso delle persone sorde al mondo digitale.
