- Abstract
This study aims to detect financial crises and their signal indicators in G7 countries from 1990 to 2016. For this purpose, fourteen leading economic indicators supported by the economic literature were examined for signaling and the 24-month crisis window before the beginning of a crisis. Among them, successful crisis estimators were determined by the noise signal ratio. The identified crisis estimators provide essential information about the dynamics of economies and the channels of the crisis affecting them. Our findings may help policymakers determine adverse policies against crisis, avoid significant losses, and stabilize the world economy and national economies.

- Abstract
This study explores the relationship between energy usage, per capita income, and ecological footprint as an assessment for ecological deterioration in the MINT (Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria, Turkey) countries for the 1976–2016 period. This work estimates the long-term correlation between variables using a vector error correction model through panel vector autoregression analysis. By incorporating endogenous interactions between the variables in the system, the VAR approach addresses the endogeneity problem. Also, the impulse response functions and the effects of variables on certain lags are evaluated. Then, the cointegration between variables has been estimated with dynamic and fully modified ordinary least squares panel analysis to assess the longterm relationship further. After the examinations, a satisfactory Granger causality result of the short-term variables could not be achieved. However, the same cannot be said for long-run causality. In the impulse-response functions, the interactions of the variables on each other are evaluated. Only the increase in energy consumption, whose coefficient is statistically significant and coherent, increases the flexibility of the ecological footprint.

This paper demonstrated the role of monetary policy in controlling the inflation rate in Iraq. For this purpose, a modeling technique of the Autoregressive Distributed Lagged (ARDL) model has been used, and Monthly data has been collected for the period (31/12/2004 to 31/7/2020). Hence, the result of the unit root test for stationary implies that the inflation rate is stationary at the level, and other variables are stationary at the first difference. However, the result of the Johansen Cointegration Test reveals the relationships between inflation rate and all variables in the long run. Moreover, the Granger causality result shows two-direction causality between narrow money supply and exchange rate granger causes inflation rate. Unidirectional granger causality between inflation rate granger causes board money supply and interest rate. Finally, the outcome of the (ARDL) model reveals that the money supply and exchange rate are significant and positively related to inflation. The implication is that an increase in the money supply and exchange rate leads to high inflation in Iraq. The interest rate has a significant and contradictory relationship with the interest rate and inflation rate in Iraq. It indicates that an increase in the interest rate leads to a decrease inflation rate in Iraq.

Debates over the relationship between development and urbanization have gained ground over the last decades and lead to controversial results, especially in developing nations. In this perspective, this study investigates the role of some variables (economic, demographic, political) in the process of urbanization in the 21st century in selected Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) countries. Data from the World Development Indicators and some specialized institutions related to 29 SSA countries from 2008 to 2015 are employed to test the hypothesis that demographical and political factors are the main drivers of urban growth in less developed countries. We assumed that economic variables are insignificant in the explanation of urbanization in the area. Results from panel data analysis using Pooled Ordinary Least Squares regressions are used to test the hypothesized relationships. We found that fertility, Human Development Index, and government policies have accelerated the pace of urbanization, which later seems to have been ultimately brought to rest due to increased unemployment trends. There is evidence that many Africans have left the cities in Africa discouraged by higher levels of unemployment.

It is widely alleged that urbanization has gained momentum during the past 19th and 20th century in most of today’s developed countries. Today, these countries still displaying higher urban rates globally, are recorded a tremendous decline in urban growth. As the phenomenon has been less examined in the concerned countries in the 21st century compared to the previous centuries, this study proposes an analysis of selected economic, demographic and political variables in the process of urbanization occurring in the Group of seven (G7) countries. Data from the World Development Indicators and some other specialized institutions related to the G7 countries from 1995 to 2014 are employed to test the hypothesis that economic factors and international migration are the main engines of urban growth in the area. Results from panel data analysis using Fixed Effects estimations are used to test the hypothesized relationships. We found that higher productivity in manufacturing and increasing international migration flows are accelerating the pace of urban growth in G7 countries in the contemporary era.

Opening Turkish railroad transportation services to competition is crucial for its future. Competition in railroad services may include both obtaining and maintaining the competitive market structures starting from the railroad transportation industry to the transportation sector as a whole, including but not limited to transportation through highways and waterways. Obtaining and maintaining a competitive market structure in the railroad transportation services; however, implies a set of stages: First, separation of ownership and maintenance of the infrastructure from businesses of actually doing the transportation activities should be done. Then, establishing independent corporations that focus on profit maximizations on each separated activities is needed. Finally by means of choosing either competition for market or competition in market or both methods, competitive market structure may be maintained in the industry, Türk demiryolu sektörünün rekabete açılması ve diğer ulaşım türleri ile rekabet edebilir bir yapı kazanması, ulusal ulaştırma hizmetlerinin geleceği açısından büyük önem arz etmektedir.

Toplam Faktör Verimliliği için Malmquist Endeksi kullanılarak yıllar boyunca tüm işletmeler için Toplam Faktör Verimliliğinin sadece binde üç düzeyinde arttığı tespit edilmiştir., This study attempts to obtain Technical Efficiency (TE), Allocative Efficiency (AE) and Average Efficiency of dynamic DEA-Window analysis scores of 31 railway firms operating worldwide. The data set covering the period of 2000 to 2009 is analyzed by CCR and BCC methods. In the analysis conducted by use of the CCR model, while total 17 firms are efficient in the first year, this figure reaches to 18 firms for the last year with one increment. With input oriented and variable return analysis conducted by use of the BCC model, the firms having TE at the beginning of the period were 20 in number. At the end of the period, the figure reaches to 24. Window analysis suggests that all firms in general have stable average efficiency rate and inefficiencies of the firms and standard deviations of their efficiency scores exhibit a similar pattern. Malmquist Index (MI) analysis also suggests that Total Factor Productivity has increased by 0.03% for the entire period.

Toplam Faktör Verimliliği için Malmquist Endeksi kullanılarak yıllar boyunca tüm işletmeler için Toplam Faktör Verimliliğinin sadece binde iki düzeyinde arttığı tespit edilmiştir., In this study, the Technical Efficiency and the Allocative Efficiency Scores of 23 commercial banks operating in Turkey between 2003 and 2012 were obtained by use of the Data Envelopment Analysis. In the CCR model analysis; while 3 banks did not have Technical Efficiency for the first years, this number doubles for 2012. Whereas only 5 banks were efficient in terms of Allocative Efficiency for the first year, this number goes down to 4 in the last year. As a result of the BCC model; while only one bank did not have Technical Efficiency at the beginning of the period, this number quadruples at the end of the period. This number for the Allocative Efficiency is 10 at the beginning of the period and 16 at the end of the period. Considering the CCR model, it is more significant in the estimation by using the panel data regression model in order to determine the effect of the outputs on the efficiency of the banks. The Malmquist Index is used for the Total Factor Productivity and it was found out that the productivity increased only at the rate of two thousandth (0.002) for all the enterprises for the period.

Buna karşın Haydarpaşa ve Ankara’nın tüm dönemler boyunca sürekli etkinliğe sahip oldukları görülmüştür., This paper attempts to measure the performance of Turkish Railways’ 7 regional headquarters that produce passenger and freight services around the country. The data covering eleven years from 2000 to 2010 is analyzed via the DEA method for the purpose of the study. To find out the efficiency scores of the regional decision making units, inputs contain number of employees, length electrified main line, length of non-electrified main line, and amount of working hours of locomotives while outputs contain passenger gross ton per kilometer and cargo gross ton per kilometer. After generating the efficiency scores, total factor productivity is investigated by Malmquist Index. The findings indicate that according to constant returns to scale distance functions, Izmir and Sivas have lowest efficiency scores while according to variable returns to scale distance functions Sivas and Adana have the lowest scores. Haydarpasa and Ankara always have high efficiency scores.

Son olarak, borsa ve döviz krizleriyle alakalı olan kötü sinyallerin iyi sinyallere oranının 1'den az olması, borsa krizleri (döviz krizleri) olduğu zaman döviz krizlerinin (borsa krizlerinin) olma olasılığının olmama olasılığından yüksek olduğuna işaret etmektedir., This study provides a detailed statistical overview of the time andregional distribution and relative timing occurrence of stock market andcurrency crises in 22 emerging economies over the 1984 - 2001 periodsand examines whether stock market and currency crises are related or not. We find that the number and annual average (frequency) of stockmarket and “twin” crises have increased (decreased) over time while thenumber, average per year and frequency of currency crises tends to bestable. We also find that stock market and currency crises tend to occursimultaneously and stock market crises slightly lead currency crisesrather than vice-versa. At the same time, the predictive power of thestock market crises on set currency crises are higher than the predictivepower of currency crises on set stock market crises. Finally, all thenoise-to-signal ratios associated with stock market and currency crisesare less than 1 implying that when stock market crises occur currencycrises are more likely than not and vice-versa.

- Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to provide a detailed statistical overview of the time and regional distribution, relative timing occurrence of economic crises and government changes in 51 economies over the 1990–2007 periods. At the same time, the predictive power of the economic crises on set government changes will be examined using "signal approach". The result showed that the percentage of government changes is highest in transition economies (86 percent of observations) and lowest in Latin American economies (39 percent of observations). The percentages of government changes are same in both developed and developing countries (43 percent of observations). However, average crises per year (frequency of crises) are higher (lower) in developing (developed) countries than developed (developing) countries. Also, the predictive power of economic crises about the onset of a government change is highest in Transition economies (81 percent) and lowest in Latin American countries (30 percent). The predictive power of economic crises in developing countries (43 percent) is lower than developed countries (55 percent).

Bu çalışmada iki temel ulaştırma sistemi olan karayolu ve demiryolunun; yapım, bakım-onarım ve işletme maliyetlerinin dahil edildiği maliyet temelli ekonomik etkinlik karşılaştırması yapılmıştır., Economic efficiency is one of the important factors in the selection of a transportation system. Because transportation services and investments are seen as a means of public service and social politics in many countries, economic efficiency criteria aren't taken into consideration in planning and pricing these services and as a result, such problems as waste of resources, insufficient funding for transportation services, the tortuosity in the selection of transportation services and negative externalities are encountered. İn this study the comparison of economic efficiency based on cost, in which the costing of construction, maintenance and operating of highway and railway which are two main transportation are included, was done.

This study aims to explain competitiveness of OECD countries through developing institutional and mixed models. In these models, the data of 2007 are used to avoid the global crisis effects of 2008. As a result of predictions, instituional models developed with the indicators formed to show the institutional, political and socio-cultural structures of the countries by some organizations are found functional in explaining competetiveness of OECD. It is found that factors thought to have been defining the national competitiveness depending on institutional models explain WEF measures of OECD’s competitiveness along 47 % – 56 %, IMD meausures of OECDS’s competitiveness along 74% -84 %. Mixed models developed by including theoretical variables into instituional models are found explaining OECD’s competitivess around 63%-90%.

Microfinance,Poverty,Microfinance Clients - Abstract
Microfinance has brought a change in the economic life of the participants of the society by providing an opportunity to the financially disadvantaged individuals to be employed and be financially independent. Microfinance is a financial instrument that can be utilized to combat poverty and other challenges hindering the progress of countries. It has managed to impact the lives of thousands of families within Turkey and on a global level too. Recently, it has been observed that the number of clients of microfinance has decreased. Therefore, the objective of the research is to identify the reasons of dissatisfaction among microfinance borrowers which leads to their separation from the microfinance institution. A total of 150 drop-out clients from Turkish Grameen Microfinance Program have been considered through the random sampling method for the research via the survey method of face-to-face interviews. Change in income level of the drop-out clients was an important reference in the method of microfinance as an instrument against poverty. The recommendations of this research like repayment period and microcredit limit can be considered and these suggestions may contribute to better managerial strategies and organizational plans for the development of microfinance institutions

WOS: 000348340500004, This study attempts to obtain efficiency scores of thirty-one railway companies operating worldwide by using data envelopment analysis. To assess the data covering a term from 2000 to 2009, we use CCR and BCC methods. According to the results of the CCR model analysis, 17 firms are found to have technical efficiency in the first year, whereas this figure goes up to 18 companies in the last year. Input oriented and variable return analysis in the concept of the BCC model, the number of the firms found technically efficient at the beginning of the period are 20. At the end of the period, this figure is up to 24. We implement panel regression analysis to estimate the effects of the companies' output on their efficiency. Results imply that CCR models provide us more meaningful explanations. Malmquist Index analysis also indicates that total factor productivity increases by 0.03 % for the entire period.

WOS: 000323671200039, This paper attempts to measure the performance of railway companies that produce passenger and freight services around the world. The data covering 10 years from 2000 to 2009 is analyzed first via the data envelopment analysis method in order to obtain technical efficiency and allocative efficiency scores of 31 railway companies for the purpose of the study. In the analysis conducted by use of the CCR model, while total 17 firms were efficient in the first year, this figure reaches to 18 companies for the last year with one more addition. While only two companies seem efficient in the first year, this figure goes down to one for the last year. With input oriented and variable return analysis conducted by use of the BCC model, the firms having technical efficiency at the beginning of the period were 20 in number. At the end of the period, the figure reaches to 24. Next, the outputs of DEA are correlated by Tobit regression and tried to determine decisiveness of the outputs on the efficiency. It has been seen that the same output composition used with Tobit analysis gives more compliant results with the allocative efficiency scores rather than with the technical efficiency scores.

Bu çalışmanın temel amacı, Türkiye'deki İslami bankacılık sektörünün orta gelir tuzağının önlenmesindeki rolünü incelemektir. Çalışmanın amaçlarına ulaşması için, İslami bankacılık sisteminin ana temellerinin (tasarruf, yatırım ve ekonomik büyüme üzerindeki) olası etkilerinin teorik temelde incelenmesi ve İslami bankacılık sektörünün (2007-2017) yılları arasında finansal verilerini analiz etmesi benimsenmiştir. Yapılan analiz sonucu, İslami bankacılık ekonomik büyüme oranlarına anlamlı bir pozitif etki göstermektedir. İslami bankacılık geleneksel bankacılığın yerine geçmez tamamlayıcı durumdadır. Orta gelir tuzağının önlenmesi için İslami bankacılık tek başına yeterli değildir. The core objective of our study is to examine the role of Turkey's Islamic banking sector in the prevention of middle-income trap (MİT). Theoretical Analysis of the potential impact of the main principles and structure of Islamic banking on savings, investment and growth and the analysis of the financial data of the Islamic banking sector (2007-2017) was adopted to achieve the objectives of the study. Analysis shows that Islamic banking has a significant positive effect on economic growth rates. Islamic banking is not a substitute for traditional banking, it is a complement to traditional banking. Islamic banking alone is not enough for the prevention of the middle income trap.

Urbanization gaining momentum in the developing world today has brought about many challenges that urgently entail the need for sound urban practices. Yet there is no clear understanding of the fundamental causes of the phenomenon especially in Africa. Besides, urbanization has been less investigated in the advanced countries during the course of the last decades and there is tendency to extrapolate the experiences of developed countries to the developing ones to tackle the phenomenon of urbanization, which can appear as simplistic and misleading. To shed light on the type and causes of urbanization happening in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and the Group of Seven (G7) countries this study investigates the contribution of selected variables in the process of urbanization in the 21st century.By using Fixed effects and Pooled Ordinary Least Squares regressions in a panel dataset, we found that political stability contributes to the decline in urban share in SSA whereas life expectancy is the main determinant of urban share in G7 countries. The findings also show that the urbanization speed has remained low or more or less constant as productivity in manufacturing remains constant in the G7 countries. However, its pace has been sustained by international migration flows. In SSA, fertility, Human Development Indicators, and government policies have propelled the pace of urbanization, which later seems to have been completely brought to rest due to increased unemployment trends. 95

In this study, doctoral dissertations conducted at the Turkish Universities for the period of 1990-2011 and the scientifically indexed publications of the professors supervising these dissertations were investigated. In the evaluations, the publications scores of the Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Scopus as well as the citations belonging to the publications in these indexes were included. During the relevant period, 617 professors supervised all the 1,906 doctoral dissertations in the field of economics. The first three universities with the highest number of doctoral dissertations were determined to be Istanbul University, Marmara University, and Dokuz Eylül University whereas the first three universities with the highest scientific indexes were Ihsan Do?ramaci Bilkent University, Middle East Technical University, and Bo?aziçi University. The academicians of the last three universities also outperformed those at the other universities regarding the scientific publications they produced and the citations they received. Overall, there is a low correlation between the dissertations conducted and scientific citations. Finally, academicians with publications and/or citations in Web of Science or Scopus were researched further via logistic regressions. The results indicate that there is positive and meaningful relation with PhD degrees earned abroad and number of publication in the Web of Science.

In this study, relationship between education, health and economic growth is examined within the frame of economic growth theories. First of all; development of the concept of human capital during historical duration, several economic growth and human capital models and relationship between education, health and economic growth are handled within the theoretical framework. In the empirical analysis part of the study, the relationship between physical capital, education and health(as two variables of human capital) and economic growth is analyzed for 11 developing and 13 developed countries. As physical capital variable, gross fixed capital formation; as education variable, education expenditures, as health variable, life expectancy at birth are taken. As a result of the study, the long run relationship between education, health and economic growth is detected and also, the direction of the relationship is determined as positive. Gross fixed capital formation and education expenditures are detected as more effective in the developed countries than those in the developing countries on economic growth; however, life expectancy at birth is determined as more effective in the developing countries than that in the developed countries.
