Abstract

Historical and future projected changes in climatic patterns over the largest irrigated basin in the world, the Indus River Basin (IRB), threaten agricultural production and food security in Pakistan, in particular for vulnerable farming communities. To build a more detailed understanding of the impacts of climate change on agriculture s in the IRB, the present study analyzes (1) observed trends in average temperature, precipitation and related extreme indicators, as well as seasonal shifts over a recent historical period (1997–2016); and (2) statistically downscaled future projections (up to 2100) from a set of climate models in conjunction with crop-specific information for the four main crops of the IRB: wheat, cotton, rice and sugarcane. Key findings show an increasing trend of about over 0.1 °C/year in observed minimum temperature across the study area over the historical period, but no significant trend in maximum temperature. Historical precipitation shows a positive annual increase driven mainly by changes in August and September. Future projections highlight continued warming resulting in critical heat thresholds for the four crops analyzed being increasingly exceeded into the future, in particular in the Kharif season. Concurrently, inter-annual rainfall variability is projected to increase up to 10–20% by the end of the 21st century, augmenting uncertainty of water availability in the basin. These findings provide insight into the nature of recent climatic shifts in the IRB and emphasize the importance of using climate impact assessments to develop targeted investments and efficient adaptation measures to ensure resilience of agriculture in Pakistan into the future.

Abstract

Agricultural stakeholders can effectively manage the risks and opportunities arising from climate change and variability by enhancing climate services in agriculture. Key to understanding and addressing the climate challenge is the provision and the use of climate information to aid decision-makers and policy-makers. Climate services are now integral to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Assessment Reports, governments' national adaptation plans, funding bodies, and a growing number of sectors and industries worldwide. The article provides our personal perspective, experience, and views on the important and timely issue of managing better the risks and opportunities to the agriculture sector and community that are arising from changes in climate. We describe a framework to help drive action to tackle the climate challenge comprising enhanced knowledge and information products, efficient information delivery and use, and assured policy and institutional support, in an iterative loop. Abstract

Delayed cerebral ischemia(DCl) is a serious complication of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage(SAH). Matricellular protein periostin (POSTN) has been found to be upregulated and linked with early brain injury after experimental SAH. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between plasma POSTN levels and various clinical factors including serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), an inflammatory marker, in 109 consecutive SAH patients whose POSTN levels were measured at days 1-12 after aneurysmal obliteration. DCI developed in 16 patients associated with higher incidence of angiographic vasospasm, cerebral infarction, and 90-day worse outcomes. POSTN levels peaked at days 4-6 before DCI development.Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage was associated with reduced POSTN levels, but did not influence CRP levels. There was no correlation between POSTN levels and other treatments or CRP levels. To predict DCI development, receiver-operating characteristic curves indicated that the most reasonable cutoff POSTN levels were obtained at days 1-3 in patients without CSF drainage (80.5 ng/ml; specificity, 77.6%; sensitivity, 85.7%). Multivariate analyses using variables obtained by day 3 revealed that POSTN level was an independent predictor of DCI. POSTN levels over the cutoff value were associated with higher incidence of DCI, but not angiographic vasospasm. This study shows for the first time that CSF drainage may reduce plasma POSTN levels, and that POSTN levels may increase prior to the development of DCI with and without vasospasm irrespective of systemic inflammatory reactions in clinical settings. 50. Development and use of agronomic weather indices in assessing intra-seasonal climate change risks to rainfed cropping systems

Abstract

To answer the fundamental question of “adapt to what” within the context of climate-smart agriculture investments, staff and partners of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have developed and applied a set of 69 agronomic weather indices to identify trends in the frequency and intensity of intra-seasonal weather events associated with climate change. These indices, when applied to daily historical and downscaled projected temperature and precipitation data, provide a robust, empirically-driven means of identifying the principal attributes of climate change to which crop agriculture must adapt. Research completed with national teams in Malawi and Zambia used the indices with the daily weather station records from the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services and gridded climate data. Individually, and in combination, the indices allow the identification of important trends in seasonality, the crossing of critical crop tolerance thresholds, extreme weather events and the responsiveness of some adaptation options. The projection of these trends into the near-term future helps to guide climate-smart agricultural investments in research programmes, extension field activities and climate change adaptation efforts more broadly. Using daily temperature and precipitation data, the established indices can be used with any crop for which a basic physiological understanding exists, covering spatial scales ranging from individual weather stations to national and regional coverage.
