We present the commissioning of the Fast Annihilation Cryogenic Tracker detector (FACT), installed around the antihydrogen production trap inside the 1 T superconducting magnet of the AE\=gIS experiment. FACT is designed to detect pions originating from the annihilation of antiprotons. Its 794 scintillating fibers operate at 4 K and are read out by silicon photomultipliers (MPPCs) at near room temperature. FACT provides the antiproton/antihydrogen annihilation position information with a few ns timing resolution. We present the hardware and software developments which led to the successful operation of the detector for antihydrogen detection and the results of an antiproton-loss based efficiency assessment. The main background to the antihydrogen signal is that of the positrons impinging onto the positronium conversion target and creating a large amount of gamma rays which produce a sizeable signal in the MPPCs shortly before the antihydrogen signal is expected. We detail the characterization of this background signal and its impact on the antihydrogen detection efficiency.

We investigate experimentally the possibility of enhancing the production of $2^3S$ positronium atoms by driving the $1^3S$-$3^3P$ and $3^3P$-$2^3S$ transitions, overcoming the natural branching ratio limitation of spontaneous decay from $3^3P$ to $2^3S$. The decay of $3^3P$ positronium atoms towards the $2^3S$ level has been effciently stimulated by a 1312.2nm broadband IR laser pulse. The dependence of the stimulating transition efficiency on the intensity of the IR pulse has been measured to find the optimal enhancement conditions. A maximum relative increase of $ \times (3.1 \pm 1.0) $ in the $2^3S$ production efficiency, with respect to the case where only spontaneous decay is present, was obtained., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Positronium in the $2^3S$ metastable state exhibits a low electrical polarizability and a long lifetime (1140 ns) making it a promising candidate for interferometry experiments with a neutral matter-antimatter system. In the present work, $2^3S$ positronium is produced - in absence of electric field - via spontaneous radiative decay from the $3^3P$ level populated with a 205nm UV laser pulse. Thanks to the short temporal length of the pulse, 1.5 ns full-width at half maximum, different velocity populations of a positronium cloud emitted from a nanochannelled positron/positronium converter were selected by delaying the excitation pulse with respect to the production instant. $ 2^3S $ positronium atoms with velocity tuned between $ 7 \cdot 10^4 $ m/s and $ 10 \cdot 10^4 $ m/s were thus produced. Depending on the selected velocity, a $2^3S$ production effciency ranging from $\sim 0.8 \%$ to $\sim 1.7%$, with respect to the total amount of emitted positronium, was obtained. The observed results give a branching ratio for the $3^3P$-$2^3S$ spontaneous decay of $(9.7 \pm 2.7) \% $. The present velocity selection technique could allow to produce an almost monochromatic beam of $\sim 1 \cdot 10^3 $ $2^3S$ atoms with a velocity spread $ < 10^4 $ m/s and an angular divergence of $\sim$ 50 mrad., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Producing positronium (Ps) in the metastable $2^3\text{S}$ state is of interest for various applications in fundamental physics. We report here about an experiment in which Ps atoms are produced in this long-lived state by spontaneous radiative decay of Ps excited to the $3^3\text{P}$ level manifold. The Ps cloud excitation is obtained with a UV laser pulse in an experimental vacuum chamber in presence of guiding magnetic field of 25 mT and an average electric field of 300 V/cm. The indication of the $2^3\text{S}$ state production is obtained from a novel analysis technique of single-shot positronium annihilation lifetime spectra. Its production efficiency relative to the total amount of formed Ps is evaluated by fitting a simple rate equations model to the experimental data and found to be $ (2.1 \pm 1.3) \, \% $.

Experiments with antihydrogen ($\overline{\text{H}}$) for a study of matter--antimatter symmetry and antimatter gravity require ultracold $\overline{\text{H}}$ to reach ultimate precision. A promising path towards anti-atoms much colder than a few kelvin involves the pre-cooling of antiprotons by laser-cooled anions. Due to the weak binding of the valence electron in anions - dominated by polarization and correlation effects - only few candidate systems with suitable transitions exist. We report on a combination of experimental and theoretical studies to fully determine the relevant binding energies, transition rates and branching ratios of the most promising candidate La$^{-}$. Using combined transverse and collinear laser spectroscopy, we determined the resonant frequency of the laser cooling transition to be $\nu = 96.592\,713(91)$ THz and its transition rate to be $A = 4.90(50) \times 10^{4}$ s$^{-1}$. Using a novel high-precision theoretical treatment of La$^-$ we calculated yet unmeasured energy levels, transition rates, branching ratios, and lifetimes to complement experimental information on the laser cooling cycle of La$^-$. The new data establish the suitability of La$^-$ for laser cooling and show that the cooling transition is significantly stronger than suggested by a previous theoretical study., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The characteristics of low energy antiproton annihilations on nuclei (e.g. hadronization and product multiplicities) are not well known, and Monte Carlo simulation packages that use different models provide different descriptions of the annihilation events. In this study, we measured the particle multiplicities resulting from antiproton annihilations on nuclei. The results were compared with predictions obtained using different models in the simulation tools GEANT4 and FLUKA. For this study, we exposed thin targets (Cu, Ag and Au) to a very low energy antiproton beam from CERN's Antiproton Decelerator, exploiting the secondary beamline available in the AEgIS experimental zone. The antiproton annihilation products were detected using emulsion films developed at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics in Bern, where they were analysed at the automatic microscope facility. The fragment multiplicity measured in this study is in good agreement with results obtained with FLUKA simulations for both minimally and heavily ionizing particles.

The goal of the AE$\mathrm{\bar{g}}$IS experiment at the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) at CERN, is to measure directly the Earth's gravitational acceleration on antimatter. To achieve this goal, the AE$\mathrm{\bar{g}}$IS collaboration will produce a pulsed, cold (100 mK) antihydrogen beam with a velocity of a few 100 m/s and measure the magnitude of the vertical deflection of the beam from a straight path. The final position of the falling antihydrogen will be detected by a position sensitive detector. This detector will consist of an active silicon part, where the annihilations take place, followed by an emulsion part. Together, they allow to achieve 1$%$ precision on the measurement of $\bar{g}$ with about 600 reconstructed and time tagged annihilations. We present here, to the best of our knowledge, the first direct measurement of antiproton annihilation in a segmented silicon sensor, the first step towards designing a position sensitive silicon detector for the AE$\mathrm{\bar{g}}$IS experiment. The main goal of the AEgIS experiment at CERN is to test the weak equivalence principle for antimatter. AEgIS will measure the free-fall of an antihydrogen beam traversing a moir\'e deflectometer. The goal is to determine the gravitational acceleration g for antihydrogen with an initial relative accuracy of 1% by using an emulsion detector combined with a silicon micro-strip detector to measure the time of flight. Nuclear emulsions can measure the annihilation vertex of antihydrogen atoms with a precision of about 1 - 2 microns r.m.s. We present here results for emulsion detectors operated in vacuum using low energy antiprotons from the CERN antiproton decelerator. Penning trap mass measurements on neutron-deficient Cd isotopes (99-109)Cd have been performed with the ISOLTRAP mass spectrometer at ISOLDE/CERN, all with relative mass uncertainties below 3*10^8. A new mass evaluation has been performed. The mass of 99Cd has been determined for the first time which extends the region of accurately known mass values towards the doubly magic nucleus 100Sn. The implication of the results on the reaction path of the rp process in stellar X-ray bursts is discussed. In particular, the uncertainty of the abundance and the overproduction created by the rp-process for the mass A = 99 is demonstrated by reducing the uncertainty of the proton-separation energy of 100In Sp(100In) by a factor of 2.5., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

High-precision mass measurements on neutron-rich zinc isotopes 71m,72-81Zn have been performed with the Penning trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP. For the first time the mass of 81Zn has been experimentally determined. This makes 80Zn the first of the few major waiting points along the path of the astrophysical rapid neutron capture process where neutron separation energy and neutron capture Q-value are determined experimentally. As a consequence, the astrophysical conditions required for this waiting point and its associated abundance signatures to occur in r-process models can now be mapped precisely. The formation of the antihydrogen beam in the AEGIS experiment through the use of inhomogeneous electric fields is discussed and simulation results including the geometry of the apparatus and realistic hypothesis about the antihydrogen initial conditions are shown. The resulting velocity distribution matches the requirements of the gravity experiment. We describe how protonium, the quasi-stable antiproton-proton bound system, has been synthesized following the interaction of antiprotons with the molecular ion H$_2^+$ in a nested Penning trap environment. From a careful analysis of the spatial distributions of antiproton annihilation events in the ATHENA experiment, evidence is presented for protonium production with sub-eV kinetic energies in states around $n$ = 70, with low angular momenta. High-precision Penning trap mass measurements on the stable nuclide 27Al as well as on the short-lived radionuclides 26Al and 38,39Ca have been performed by use of radiofrequency excitation with time-separated oscillatory fields, i.e. Ramsey's method, as recently introduced for the excitation of the ion motion in a Penning trap, was applied. A comparison with the conventional method of a single continuous excitation demonstrates its advantage of up to ten times shorter measurements. The new mass values of 26,27Al clarify conflicting data in this specific mass region. In addition, the resulting mass values of the superallowed beta-emitter 38Ca as well as of the groundstate of the beta-emitter 26Al m confirm previous measurements and corresponding theoretical corrections of the ft-values., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures

Accurate atomic mass measurements of neutron-deficient and neutron-rich nuclides around the doubly-magic 208Pb and of neutron-rich cesium isotopes were performed with the Penning trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE/CERN. The masses of 145,147Cs, 181,183Tl, 186Tlm, 187Tl, 196Tlm, 205Tl, 197Pbm, 208Pb, 190 to 197Bi, 209,215,216Bi, 203,205,229Fr, and 214,229,230Ra were determined. The obtained relative mass uncertainty in the range of $2 \cdot 10^{-7}$ to $2 \cdot 10^{-8}$ is not only required for safe identification of isomeric states but also allows mapping the detailed structure of the mass surface. A mass adjustment procedure was carried out and the results included into the Atomic Mass Evaluation. We present evidence showing how antiprotonic hydrogen, the quasistable antiproton-proton (pbar-p) bound system, has been synthesized following the interaction of antiprotons with the hydrogen molecular ion (H2+) in a nested Penning trap environment. Mass measurements on radionuclides along the potassium isotope chain have been performed with the ISOLTRAP Penning trap mass spectrometer. For 35K T1/2=178ms) to 46K (T1/2=105s) relative mass uncertainties of 2x10-8 and better have been achieved. The accurate mass determination of 35K (dm=0.54keV) has been exploited to test the Isobaric Multiplet Mass Equation (IMME) for the A=35, T=3/2 isospinquartet. High-precision mass measurements of more than thirty neutron-rich nuclides around the Z=28 closed proton shell were performed with the triple-trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE/CERN to address the question of a possible neutron shell closure at N=40. The results, for 57,60,64-69Ni (Z=28), 65-74,76Cu (Z=29), and 63-65,68-78Ga (Z=31), have a relative uncertainty of the order of 10^8. In particular, the masses of 72-74,76Cu have been measured for the first time. We analyse the resulting mass surface for signs of magicity, comparing the behavior of N=40 to that of known magic numbers and to mid-shell behavior. Contrary to nuclear spectroscopy studies, no indications of a shell or sub-shell closure are found for N=40., Comment: 14 figures

Ramsey's method of separated oscillatory fields is applied to the excitation of the cyclotron motion of short-lived ions in a Penning trap to improve the precision of their measured mass. The theoretical description of the extracted ion-cyclotron-resonance line shape is derived out and its correctness demonstrated experimentally by measuring the mass of the short-lived $^{38}$Ca nuclide with an uncertainty of $1.6\cdot 10^{-8}$ using the ISOLTRAP Penning trap mass spectrometer at CERN. The mass value of the superallowed beta-emitter $^{38}$Ca is an important contribution for testing the conserved-vector-current hypothesis of the electroweak interaction. The CPT theorem and the Weak Equivalence Principle are foundational principles on which the standard description of the fundamental interactions is based. The validity of such basic principles should be tested using the largest possible sample of physical systems. Cold neutral antimatter (low-energy antihydrogen atoms) could be a tool for testing the CPT symmetry with high precision and for a direct measurement of the gravitational acceleration of antimatter. After several years of experimental efforts, the production of low-energy antihydrogen through the recombination of antiprotons and positrons is a well-established experimental reality. Atomic systems of antiparticles are the laboratories of choice for tests of CPT symmetry with antimatter. The ATHENA experiment was the first to report the production of copious amounts of cold antihydrogen in 2002. This article reviews some of the insights that have since been gained concerning the antihydrogen production process as well as the external and internal properties of the produced anti-atoms. An ion beam cooler and buncher has been developed for the manipulation of radioactive ion beams. The gas-filled linear radiofrequency ion trap system is installed at the Penning trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE/CERN. Its purpose is to accumulate the 60-keV continuous ISOLDE ion beam with high efficiency and to convert it into low-energy low-emittance ion pulses. The efficiency was found to exceed 10% in agreement with simulations. A more than 10-fold reduction of the ISOLDE beam emittance can be achieved. The system has been used successfully for first on-line experiments. Its principle, setup and performance will be discussed.
