Traumaattisista historiallisista tapahtumista kertovissa kaunokirjallisissa teoksissa voidaan nähdä implisiittistä historian kuvausta. Tamás Kisantal lähestyy väitöksessään kaunokirjallisia tekstejä historiallis-filosofisesta näkökulmasta ja soveltaa narratiivisen historianfilosofian metodeja esimerkiksi holokaustiin liittyvän kirjallisuuden tarkastelemiseen. Kisantalin mukaan holokaustin kuvaukseen liittyy eettinen ulottuvuus, joka on yksi tärkeimmistä seikoista historiankuvauksessa. Hän toteaa, että menneisyyttä voi tutkia ainoastaan huomioimalla tämän ulottuvuuden.Kisantal analysoi kaunokirjallisia tekstejä, jotka kuvaavat traumaattisia historiallisia tapahtumia narratiivisen historianfilosofian pääteesien ja metodologian valossa. Narratiivisessa historianfilosofiassa oletetaan muun muassa, että teksteihin sisältyy piilevää historiankuvausta. Analyysissään Kisantal keskittyy neljään teokseen, jotka kuvaavat toista maailmansotaa ja holokaustia rajoja rikkovalla tavalla. Teokset ovat Kurt Vonnegutin Teurastamo 5, Art Spiegelmanin Maus, D. M. Thomasin Valkoinen hotelli ja László Mártonin Árnyas fõutcaan. Kisantal tarkastelee väitöksessään myös postmoderneja holokaustiin liittyviä tekstejä, jotka leikittelevät historialla ja haastavat totuttua historiankirjoitusta. Kisantal tutkii rajoja rikkovia teoksia, koska totutuista kerrontatavoista irtautuminen auttaa kiinnittämään huomiota olemassa oleviin rajoihin ja näyttää, että kuvaustavat ovat muuttumassa.Kisantal nojaa tutkimuksessaan narratiivisen historianfilosofian pääteoreetikoiden näkemyksiin, joiden mukaan kertovalla muodolla sinällään on merkitystä. Kertoessaan menneisyydestä tekstit myös väistämättä tulkitsevat sitä. The representational methodas a conception of history in the holocaust-literature.My text has a twofold aim. First I try to apply the main theses and methodology of narrative philosophy of history to literary texts. In other words I analyse the implicitphilosophy of history that appears in the form of literary texts. On the other hand I illustrate this reading method on a special group of texts: I examine literary worksthat represent traumatic historical events.The principal methodological innovation of narrative philosophy of history is analysing historical texts as texts, as linguistic entities that represent not only the past itself but the viewpoint and the ideology of the historian and of his or her cultural period. According to the main theorists of this trend (e. g. Hayden White, FrankAnkersmit, Dominick LaCapra etc.) the (narrative) form has content, the narrative and rhetorical structure of historiographical texts reveals the implicit philosophy ofhistory (or historical imagination) of a given historian and his or her culture. I analyse literary texts with similar method and concentrate the hidden historicalpicture that is manifested in the linguistic and narrative form.The modern traumatic historical events (especially the Holocaust) have special importance from the viewpoint of this reading method. This kind of event shows thesocial and cultural function of historical representation, since there were some heated historical-philosophical and aesthetical debates about the representability of theseevents and about the adequate methods of its representation. I analyse four literaryworks (Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five, Art Spiegelman’s Maus, D. M. Thomas’The White Hotel, and László Márton’s Árnyas fõutca), which represent some events of Second World War and the Holocaust in form breaking or provocative way, since theact of subversion and provocation reveals the historical and cultural taboos and the rules (or the limits) of representation.Finally I examine these works from a broader literary-historical context and try to draw some conclusions in connection with our recent picture of history.
