Abstract

A local control and data acquisition (CDAQ) sub-system for gamma-ray spectroscopy diagnostics is being developed for the JET-EP2 enhancements. The Hardware implementation is based on the Advanced Telecommunications Computing ArchitectureTM (ATCATM) and will permit acquisition at a very high count rate (up to few MHz) with digital pulse processing (DPP) on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) performing pulse height analysis (PHA), pulse shape discrimination (PSD) and pile-up rejection (PUR) algorithms. This paper presents the CDAQ software implementation, which is based on the FireSignal platform developed by the Euratom/IST Association. The FireSignal is based on a client/server modular approach, where both the server and the hardware clients are defined by a generic XML description. Its event-driven operation is dynamic thereby permitting continuous control and data acquisition and 'plug-and-play' of clients/hardware. The FireSignal is being extended to interface the diagnostic sub-systems to the JET CODAS HTTP data/event transport layer and to integrate the diagnostics specific requirements including the hardware device drivers, real-time spectroscopy processing and local control operation. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

The spectral broadening of characteristic γ-ray emission peaks from the reaction C12(He3,pγ)N14 was measured in D(He3) plasmas of the JET tokamak with ion cyclotron resonance heating tuned to the fundamental harmonic of He3. Intensities and detailed spectral shapes of γ-ray emission peaks were successfully reproduced using a physics model combining the kinetics of the reacting ions with a detailed description of the nuclear reaction differential cross sections for populating the L1-L8 N14 excitation levels yielding the observed γ-ray emission. The results provide a paradigm, which leverages knowledge from areas of physics outside traditional plasma physics, for the development of nuclear radiation based methods for understanding and controlling fusion burning plasmas. © 2011 American Physical Society.

Abstract

High-resolution gamma-ray measurements were carried out on the Joint European Torus (JET) in an experiment aimed at accelerating He-4 ions in the MeV range by coupling third harmonic radio frequency heating to an injected He-4 beam. For the first time, Doppler broadening of gamma-ray peaks from the C-12(d, p gamma)C-13 and Be-9(alpha, n gamma)C-12 reactions was observed and interpreted with dedicated Monte Carlo codes based on the detailed nuclear physics of the processes. Information on the confined He-4 and deuteron energy distribution was inferred, and confined He-4 ions with energies as high as 6 MeV were assessed. A signature of MHD activity in gamma-ray traces was also detected. The reported results have a bearing on diagnostics for fast ions in the MeV range in next step fusion devices.

Abstract

The Doppler broadening of individual γ-ray lines was measured with a high purity germanium detector in JET plasma experiments. High-resolution γ-ray spectrometry of nuclear reactions between energetic D, 3 He and 4 He ions accelerated by ion cyclotron resonance heating and main plasma impurities such as carbon and beryllium has been used. The nuclear reactions giving rise to γ-rays have been identified and an effective temperature of the heated ions has been obtained in JET discharges. This technique could be used for fast ion and fusion alpha-particle studies in ITER.
