The continent of China developed through the coalescence of three major cratons (North China, Tarim and Yangtze) and continental micro‐blocks through the processes of oceanic crust disappearance and acceretionary‐collision of continental crusts. The strata of the Chinese continental landmass are subdivided into 12 tectonic‐strata regions. Based on the composition of geological features among the three main cratons, continental micro‐blocks and other major global cratons, their affinities can be preliminarily deduced during the Tonian period, using evidence from sedimentary successions, paleobiogeography, tectonic and magmatic events. The Yangtze and Tarim cratons show that they have close affinities during the assembly‐dispersal milestone of the Rodinia Supercontinent. The sedimentary record and magmatic age populations in the blocks suggest that there was a widespread, intensive magmatic event that resulted from a subduction process during ∼1000–820 Ma, related to continental rifting around the Yangtze and Tarim cratons. However, they differ greatly from the North China Craton. The continental micro‐blocks in the Panthalassic Ocean could have some missing connection with the North China Craton that persisted until the Middle‐Late Devonian. In contrast, the Alxa Block showed a strong affinity with the Tarim Craton. The revised Tonian paleogeography of the Rodinia Supercontinent is a good demonstration of how to show the relationship between the main cratons and the continental micro‐blocks. The Cryogenian is a critical period in the history of the Earth. It is marked by multiple extreme climate changes that caused alternating global glacial and interglacial intervals. These dramatically changed the sedimentary system, and metal ores and source rocks distributed widely during this period. Therefore, studying the Cryogenian stratigraphic framework and sedimentary basins is important to improve the stratigraphic resolution for metal mineral and hydrocarbon prospecting and exploration in China. This review paper firstly divides three tectonic‐stratigraphic regions in China in the Cryogenian, including the tectonic‐stratigraphic regions of Great South China, Xingmeng‐Tarim, and North China. Secondly, geochronologic data and geological records are combined to clearly depict the Cryogenian sedimentary sequence of continental blocks and micro‐continental blocks in different tectonic‐stratigraphic regions. The results were used to propose a new comparison scheme of stratigraphy for the Cryogenian in China. Finally, according to differences of sedimentary evolution and tectonic evolvement, sedimentary basins and their lithofacies paleogeography are identified and summarized, respectively. Abstract: Samples were collected continuously and systematically from Beds 2 to 30 of the Meishan D section, and nearly 4,000 foraminiferal specimens were recognized. In total, 72 species (partially including undetermined species and conformis species) in 34 genera of foraminifers were identified. Twelve foraminiferal community zones were established from Beds 2 to 27 based on the abundance, dominance, diversity, and equitability of the foraminiferal fauna and a functional morphological analysis of the dominant and characteristic species. The habitat type indicated by each community zone and the sedimentary features were used to determine the paleo‐water depths and the relative changes in sea level. We generated curves of both the habitat type and the hydrodynamic conditions, which together indicate the relative changes in the paleo‐water depth and the substrate features in the studied area during the Changhsingian. This study discusses the possible relationship between the foraminiferal community zones and the sea‐level changes based on a statistical analysis of the foraminiferal community zones. • Summarizes two different Neoproterozoic plate tectonic environments. • Identifies four evolutionary phases of the Neoproterozoic basins. • Reviews the spatial and temporal changes in basin fill and distribution. • Evaluates the most conducive basin prototype and target regions for exploration. Based on a comprehensive review of published results, the plate tectonic setting of the Neoproterozoic basins in the Yangtze Craton can be summarized as evolving from the Qingbaikou convergent continental margin to the Nanhua-Sinian divergent continental margin. Four phases of basin evolution are identified in the Neoproterozoic Yangtze Craton based on the prototype basin classification scheme: a) the early Qingbaikou period (ca. 1000–820 Ma), with back-arc spreading basins on the western and northern Yangtze margins and the interior, and a retro-arc foreland basin on the southeastern Yangtze margin; b) the late Qingbaikou period (ca. 820–720 Ma), with back-arc spreading basins on the western and northern Yangtze margins and extensional down-faulted basins on the southeastern Yangtze margin and the interior of the carton; c) the Nanhua period (ca. 720–635 Ma), with rift basins on the southeastern, western, and northern Yangtze margins and the interior; and d) the Sinian period (ca. 635–541 Ma), with intracratonic rift basins in the interior of Yangtze Craton and divergent marginal subsidence basins on the southeastern and northern Yangtze margins. The temporal sequence and spatial distribution of the major prototype basins associated with the four stages of basin evolution in the Yangtze Craton were further identified. By comparing the petroleum exploration practices in China and abroad, this paper concludes that the Nanhua rift basins on the southeastern and northern Yangtze margins, the Sinian divergent marginal subsidence basins on the southeastern and northern Yangtze margins and the intracratonic rift basins in the interior Yangtze Craton were most conducive to source rock formation and are target regions for future oil and gas exploration. South China is the largest block of Rodinia in southeastern Asia. It consists of the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks, separated by the Jiangshan-Shaoxing-Pingxiang Fault. Most studies suggest that the two blocks were amalgamated in the early Neoproterozoic, and the middle Neoproterozoic vocano-sedimentary sequences on both blocks were deposited in a post-collisional rift basin (the Nanhua rift basin). Here, we conducted a geochemical and geochronological study of a turbidite sequence at the western margin of the Cathaysia Block that was previously considered to have been deposited in the Nanhua rift basin. The sedimentary rocks are characterized by bathypelagic to bathyal facies. They are composed of siliciclastic sedimentary rocks interlayered with tuffaceous materials and have geochemical compositions between felsic to intermediate arc igneous rocks. Abundant euhedral detrital zircons define a major age peak at ca. 790–770 Ma, indicating that the detrital grains were derived mostly from locally distributed syn-sedimentary middle Neoproterozoic arc igneous rocks. Predominance of zircons with ages close to the time of deposition and the whole-rock trace element compositions of the turbidite sequence also imply a convergent plate margin setting for the turbidite. The Hf isotopic compositions of the Neoproterozoic detrital zircons suggest that their provenance consisted of largely reworked crustal materials, inconsistent with a potential interpretation that similarly aged igneous rocks in the Jiangnan Orogen were the provenance. These lines of evidence, combined with other available data, suggest that the western margin of the Cathaysia Block (the West Cathaysia terrane) bears more similarities to the western and northern margins of the Yangtze Block and northern India and formed part of a Neoproterozoic subduction-accretion system located along the margin of Rodinia. We suggest that early Paleozoic strike-slip movement along the Jiangshan-Shaoxing-Pingxiang Fault played a significant role in shaping the current tectonic framework of South China by bringing the West Cathaysia terrane to its present position with respect to the Yangtze Block.
