Abstract

Direct ink write deposition facilitates line‐by‐line extrusion of inks spanning wide viscoelastic ranges. Following deposition, post processing technologies permit tuning of the extrudate's material property characteristics—ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, facilitating the photopolymerization of UV‐reactive catalyst solutions, permits targeted modification of the extrudate's microstructure and in situ tuning of extrudate macrostructure. This report analyzes the morphological, rheological, and microstructural property relationships governing the printability, and processivity, of extruded UV‐curable resin inks for delineation of sufficiency and optimization of ink printability utilizing direct ink write technologies. A design‐of‐experiments approach is implemented to quantify significance regarding an extrudate's dimensional response to extrusion parameter variation and in situ processing parameters, identifying proportionally of nozzle velocity, nozzle height, and UV irradiation exposure with extrudate aspect ratio, reflected by respective maximum extrudate aspect ratio increases of 158% and 109%, regarding 121 and 123K resin inks. Finally, the relationship between extrudate morphology and microstructure variation was assessed via dielectric cure monitoring, whereby an extrudate's ion viscosity was calculated in relation to its rheological modulus, reflecting the relationship between an extrudate's morphology, rheological response, and printability, regarding its microstructural variation. Abstract

This paper describes a new system – Vehicle Kit (VEKIT), which uses a secure web-based interface for the authentication and monitoring of Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (VANET) infrastructure and for preventing environment pollution. This paper presents the hazards caused by the usage of bags made of plastic material and proposes the design of VEKIT, which is to be installed in the vehicles for reducing the usage of such carry bags up to 75%. The survey results prove that the proposed VEKIT approach is very much relevant to solve the pollution problem faced by various countries. This novel application adds value to the future VANET projects by helping the countries to prevent pollution. The web interface of VEKIT presented in the paper can also be used to monitor the vehicles for their authenticity. A secure architecture is proposed for the usage of VANET in transport related projects. First published online 1 September 2020

Abstract

The Earth close approach of near-Earth asteroid 2005 LW3 on 2022 November 23 represented a good opportunity for a second observing campaign to test the timing accuracy of astrometric observation. With 82 participating stations, the International Asteroid Warning Network collected 1046 observations of 2005 LW3 around the time of the close approach. Compared to the previous timing campaign targeting 2019 XS, some individual observers were able to significantly improve the accuracy of their reported observation times. In particular, U.S. surveys achieved good timing performance. However, no broad, systematic improvement was achieved compared to the previous campaign, with an overall negative bias persisting among the different observers. The calibration of observing times and the mitigation of timing errors should be important future considerations for observers and orbit computers, respectively.

Abstract

Ground source heat pumps (GSHP) are a very efficient system for space heating and cooling, and it was established in 1904. GSHPs can minimize the environmental effect of buildings by using the ground as a renewable energy source. The ground will act as a heat sink or heat source. The research collection aims at finding the various possible opportunities for the effective integration of shallow geothermal energy (SGE) to decrease the fossil energy in the built environment and to reduce emission associated with it. The direct utilization of SGE using a ground source heat pump (GSHP) has been reviewed in detail for global north and global south countries, with a primary focus on heating application. The punctual information of results of various authors have been extensively summarized. This review discusses the GSHP installation status, SGE availability, GSHP system simulation, feasibilities, and performance. Worldwide more than one million GSHP systems have been installed, and the system is prevalent in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Most of the systems are installed for heating-dominated buildings in the global north. This paper also contains the research details pertaining to the last two decades about refrigerants and compressors for the development of GSHP. Finally, the feasibility study and the performance of the GSHP unit for different climatic conditions are reviewed and it is found that the technique is more feasible for cold and dry climatic conditions. Abstract

Crocodile bites are one of the most powerful bites of any creature. Bite wounds are usually deep, with severe tissue damage, frequently contaminated with unusual microorganisms, and are difficult to treat. This case report describes the treatment of a middle-aged man admitted after a crocodile attack to the left distal end of humerus, elbow and proximal forearm. He was successfully treated with empirical broad-spectrum antibiotics and repeated wound debridement. The patient was discharged after nine days of intensive care at a level 1 trauma unit, good outcomes were seen eight months later.

Abstract

Dynamic bond exchanging vitrimers have emerged recently due to their malleability, self‐heal ability, recyclability, and mechanical stability. Likewise, 3D printing is consciously introduced at different platforms for ease of fabrication, high throughput, cost‐effectiveness, and waste reduction. These two distinctive techniques have recently made their consensus performance, resulting from a phenomenal change in the printing field. Conventionally, thermoplastic inks have been primarily used in 3D printing, owing to their effortless processability. At the same time, thermosets were utilized for their superior mechanical strength. However, these two essential properties have been required to be presented in the printed material. In that scenario, thermoset vitrimer materials have been introduced in 3D printing, where malleability and mechanical stability have been observed in the same material. Thus, this article details the recent vitrimer material included with the different 3D printing system systems with their reported results to understand and make them widespread. Abstract

Concrete is a strong and fairly inexpensive building substance, but has several disadvantages like cracking that allows corrosion, thus reducing its lifespan. To mitigate these complications, long-lasting microbial self-healing cement is an alternative that is eco-friendly and also actively repairs cracks. The present paper describes the detailed experimental investigation on compressive strength of cement mortars, mixed with six alkaliphilic bacteria, isolated from subsurface mica mines of high alkalinity. The experiments showed that the addition of alkaliphilic isolates at different cell concentrations (104 and 106 cells/ml) enhanced the compressive strength of cement mortar, because the rapid growth of bacteria at high alkalinity precipitates calcite crystals that lead to filling of pores and densifying the concrete mix. Thus, Bacillus subtilis (SVUNM4) showed the highest compressive strength (28.61%) of cement mortar at 104 cells/ml compared to those of other five alkaliphilic isolates (Brevibacillus sp., SVUNM15-22.1%; P. dendritiformis, SVUNM11-19.9%; B. methylotrophicus, SVUNM9-16%; B. licheniformis, SVUNM14-12.7% and S. maltophilia, SVUNM13-9.6%) and controlled cement mortar as well. This method resulted in the filling of cracks in concrete with calcite (CaCO3), which was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Our results showed that the alkaliphilic bacterial isolates used in the study are effective in self-healing and repair of concrete cracks.

Abstract

Even though the market share of electric vehicles (EVs) has risen steadily over the years, its success in terms of mass adaptation highly depends on the availability of charging infrastructure and eliminating “range anxiety”. This chapter focuses on eliminating these bottlenecks by introducing a fast charging wireless system, which can provide a convenient and a safe way of charging EVs. The charging infrastructure is powered by distributed solar panels, an approach that works well with a “Smart City” infrastructure plan.

Abstract

This paper reviews the maximum efficiency technique of powering electric and hybrid vehicles using an intelligent Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) system. The need for compensation techniques followed by a mathematical model to determine circuit parameters for efficient power transfer is presented. This is followed by discussing the concept of an intelligent charging station using the concept of Internet of Things (IoT) to automate the charging process. A unique IPT system is proposed which utilizes IoT principles to interface the charging system with an off-the-grid solar panel to energize the transmitter's inductive couplers. A prototype rover capable of handling up to 100 W of power transfer is constructed, incorporated with existing IoT solutions that demonstrate the automated charging process and the design parameters are extrapolated and proposed for charging a Renault Twizy vehicle.

Abstract

Several future spacecraft missions are envisioned that have small ride-along satellites to inspect and service a large parent satellite. The so called escort or inspector satellites orbit around the parent satellite and with the help of onboard imaging capabilities and other sensors assess spacecraft damage in the event of an on-orbit mishap. The design of relative periodic orbits for such missions is not difficult but at the same time is not straightforward. The traditional method to design periodic relative orbits around other spacecraft is by using the Clohessy-Wiltshire (CW) equations. However, the usage of the CW equations is limited to the parent satellite's orbital eccentricity. Also the input parameters to achieve such closed relative orbits are not linked directly to the orbital elements of the parent and escort satellites in the CW method. This paper deals with the design of closed periodic orbits with the help of the analytical method developed by Balaji and Tatnall et al. (2003). The usefulness of this method is that it directly links the design parameters like the size and shape of the relative orbit with the orbital properties of the spacecraft. Abstract

Crocodile bites are one of the most powerful bites of any creature. Bite wounds are usually deep, with severe tissue damage, frequently contaminated with unusual microorganisms, and are difficult to treat. This case report describes the treatment of a middle-aged man admitted after a crocodile attack to the left distal end of humerus, elbow and proximal forearm. He was successfully treated with empirical broad-spectrum antibiotics and repeated wound debridement. The patient was discharged after nine days of intensive care at a level 1 trauma unit, good outcomes were seen eight months later.
