Objectives: Numerous indices have been used to grade the severity of gingival overgrowth which led to suspicion regarding the results concerning its prevalence and pathogenicity. The aim of this study was to assess the concordance of three different gingival overgrowth indices, which were used wide-ly in previous studies, and check their reliability and reproducibility. Material and Methods: A total of 30 full-mouth plaster casts and 90 intra-oral photographs collected from 30 patients diagnosed with gingival overgrowth were included in our study. Three trained examiners performed measurements twice on plaster casts using gingival hyperplasia index (A index) and hyperplastic index (B index). In-traoral photographs were assessed also twice using (C index). Results: Concordance of intra-exam-iner and inter-examiner reliability of the recorded measurements was carried out for each index using weighted kappa (K), with a confidence interval of 95%. The A index revealed intra-examiner total kappa values between 0.724-0.876 for horizontal measurement and 0.512-0.823 for vertical mea-surement, and inter-examiner total kappa values between 0.255-0.626 horizontally and 0.235-0.279 vertically. The B index presented intra-examiner total kappa values between 0.587-0.868 horizontally and 0.653-0.855 vertically; and inter-examiner total kappa values between 0.393-0.595 and 0.372-0.635 for horizontal and vertical measurements, respectively. The C index achieved the highest intra-examiner concordance with total kappa values between 0.758-0.855 and inter-examiner total kappa values between 0.716-0.804. Conclusions: The C index evaluated through intraoral photographs is considered the most reliable and applicable method to be utilized. The C index is suggested to be used in large scale populations with its definite detailed criteria.

GİRİŞ ve AMAÇ: Dentin hassasiyeti (DH), yetişkin popülasyonu etkileyen ve diş hekimlerinin klinikte sıklıkla karşılaştıkları ağrılı bir durumdur. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türkiye’deki diş hekimlerinin DH hakkındaki görüş, davranış ve tutumlarını anket aracılığıyla değerlendirmektir.YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: Önceki çalışmalardan Türkçe’ye çevrilerek düzenlenen 27 soruyu içeren bu anket, Survey Monkey programında oluşturuldu. Türk Diş Hekimleri Birliği’ne kayıtlı diş hekimlerine e-posta yoluyla gönderilen anketi 217 katılımcı eksiksiz yanıtladı. Veriler tanımlayıcı istatistik, ki-kare ve Fisher exact test kullanılarak analiz edildi.BULGULAR: Hekimlerin %58.06’sı uyguladıkları tedaviler içinde DH tedavisi oranının %10’dan az ve %70.97’si kliniklerine DH şikayeti ile başvuran hastaların sıklıkla 30-39 yaş aralığında olduğunu bildirdi. Hekimlerin %64.52’sinin, hassasiyetin dentin tübüllerindeki sıvı akışı nedeniyle sinirlerin uyarılmasından kaynaklandığını düşündüğü ve %93.03’ünün hava ile uyarma yöntemiyle tanı koyduğu saptandı. Hekimler, hassasiyet tedavisinde en çok zemin hazırlayıcı faktörlerin giderilmesi (%89.40) ve evde hassasiyet giderici ajanların uygulanması (%88.48) seçeneklerini tercih ettiler. Background: Piezocision, a minimally invasive surgical procedure, has been used to accelerate tooth movement. Aim: The aim of this randomized split‑mouth study was to evaluate gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) osteocalcin (OC) and type I collagen cross‑linked C‑terminal telopeptide (ICTP) levels during canine distalization with and without piezocision acceleration. Material and Methods: Fifteen systemically healthy subjects (M:F 7:8, 16.27 ± 1.14 years) requiring extraction of maxillary first premolars before retraction of canines were included in the study. Piezocisions were randomly carried out on one of the maxillary canines while bilateral canines served as controls. Canine distalization was conducted using closed‑coil springs applying a force of 150 g/side by using miniscrews as anchorage. GCF sampling was performed from maxillary canine mesial and distal sites at baseline, 1, 7, 14, and 28 days. The GCF levels of OC and ICTP were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The rate of tooth movement was evaluated at 2‑week intervals. Results: The amounts of canine distalization from baseline to 14 and 28 days in the piezocision group were significantly higher than the control group (P < 0.05). The GCF OC level of the piezocision group on the tension side and the ICTP level of the same group on the compression side were higher than the respective sides of the control group on day 14 (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Piezocision was found to be an effective treatment procedure for accelerating canine distalization accompanied by increased levels of OC and ICTP.Keywords: ICTP, osteocalcin, piezosurgey, tooth movement

Objective: The aims of the present study were to investigate the proteomic profile of nifedipine induced overgrown gingiva and compare with non-overgrown gingival tissues obtained from the same patients. Methods: Seven subjects under nifedipine medication for at least 6 months and diagnosed as nifedipine induced gingival overgrowth (NIGO) participated in the study. Periodontal clinical parameters were recorded. Gingival tissue samples were harvested from overgrown (GO+ Group, n=7) and non-overgrown regions (GO- Group, n=7) of the same patients. Proteomics was performed using Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) technique. The identified proteins were further classified according to their molecular functions, biological processes and cellular component distribution for functional gene ontology analysis using a web-based bioinformatics tool. This paper presents a new approach for predicting the Voltage Total Harmonic Distortion (THDV ) in power systems. We benefit from a power system with nonlinear dynamic load belonging to an Iron and Steel Industry. In this power system the nonlinear load consist of DC motor drives, high frequency welding machine, thyristor controlled AC chopper, rectifier and invertor. Especially high frequency machines used in heating and welding process in an iron and steel industry are playing rol in voltage distortions. Basic relationships about harmonics, effects of the harmonics and ways for the THDV measurement are described in the firstly and prediction of THDV using Fuzzy Inference Systems (FIS) are examined in the secondly part of the paper. Periodontal treatment approach for dihydropyridine induced gingival overgrowth with or without drug substitution Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate clinical effectiveness of nonsurgical periodontal treatment (NSPT) in patients with drug induced gingival overgrowth (DİGO) with or without drug substitution in comparison with patients presenting inflammatory GO. Material and Methods: A total of 17 patients with generalized GO were included in this clinical trial. Based on the medical physicians consultation, DIGO patients who continued to use dihydropyridine were allocated to the Group 1 (n=6), whereas patients whose drug substitution was carried out were allocated to the Group 2 (n=5). Group 3 (n=6) subjects had inflammatory GO. All study groups received NSPT for 4 sessions. At baseline and 6 weeks after NSPT, plaque index, gingival index, bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD) and, plaster model and photographic GO scores were measured. Results: NSPT resulted in significant decreases in periodontal clinical parameters in all groups (p0.05) except PD value which was higher in the Group 1 compared to the Group 2 (p, Dihidropiridine Bağlı Dişeti Büyümesinde Farklı İlaç Rejimlerinde Periodontal Tedavi YaklaşımıAmaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, ilaca bağlı dişeti büyümesi (İBDB) gösteren ve ilaç değişimi yapılan ve yapılmayan hastalarda cerrahi olmayan periodontal tedavinin (COPT) klinik etkinliğini değerlendirmek ve enflamatuvar dişeti büyümesi (EDB) gösteren hastalarla karşılaştırmaktır.Gereç ve Yöntemler: Ağızda generalize dişeti büyümesi görülen toplam 17 hasta araştırmaya dahil edildi. Dihidropiridine bağlı dişeti büyümesi olan hastalardan hekim konsültasyon sonucu ilacına devam edenler Grup 1 (n=6), ilaç değişimi yapılan hastalar ise Grup 2 (n=5) olarak ayrıldı. EDB görülen hastalar Grup 3’e (n=6) dahil edildi. Tüm çalışma gruplarına 4 seans COPT uygulandı. Aim: The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the clinical_x000D_ efficacy of adjunctive chlorhexidine solution irrigation_x000D_ to mechanical treatment of peri-implant mucositis in accordance_x000D_ with the principle of anti-infective treatment._x000D_ Materials and Methods: Twenty patients with at least_x000D_ 1 dental implant, that has been functioning for at least_x000D_ 1 year and diagnosed with peri-implant mucositis were_x000D_ included to the study. Patients were randomly divided_x000D_ into 2 groups with 10 patients in each group; one group_x000D_ received only mechanical periodontal treatment, while_x000D_ the other was irrigated with chlorhexidine solution (0.2%)_x000D_ in addition to mechanical treatment. Plaque index, gingival_x000D_ index, probing depth (PD) and bleeding on probing_x000D_ (BOP) were measured from tooth sites; modified plaque_x000D_ index, modified sulcus bleeding index, PD, BOP were recorded_x000D_ from implant sites at baseline, 1st and 3rd months_x000D_ after treatment. Peri-implant crevicular fluid (PICF) was_x000D_ collected from the implant sites with paper strips at baseline, first and third months after treatment. PICF volumes_x000D_ were determined with Periotron._x000D_ Results: The clinical parameters of the tooth and implant_x000D_ sites in both groups showed significant reductions at 1st_x000D_ and 3rd months (p0.05). PICF volume decreased significantly_x000D_ in both groups at 1st and 3rd months (p0.05)._x000D_ Conclusion: It was concluded that mechanical treatment_x000D_ and chlorhexidine irrigation adjunct to mechanical treatment_x000D_ have positive effects on clinical parameters in the_x000D_ treatment of peri-implant mucositis but none of them is_x000D_ superior to another.

Objectives: This survey aimed to investigate the attitudes of the first- and fifth-year Turkish dental school students towards tobacco and to determine the prevalence of those using various tobacco products. Materials & Methods: The survey was conducted between May 1 and June 30, 2018 and the first- and fifth-year students were from eleven dental schools located in different regions of Turkey. Data were tested statistically using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) program. Results: A total of 1228 students participated and 1096 completed the online survey. The majority of the participants were females (n=691, 63.05%). Mean age of the participants was 21.8 ± 2.9 years (age range 18-54 years). Although the overall rate of current smokers was 37.96%, 62.04% of the participants had inhaled tobacco smoke at least once. More than half (55.19%) of the current smokers stated that they wish to quit and 29.26% of these students have attempted to quit within the last six months. Only 19.49% of all participants defined themselves as highly addicted to cigarette smoking. The rate of waterpipe smokers was 41.2%, of which 83.7% declared that they had no intention to quit. Conclusion: This study shows that the rate of tobacco smokers is rather high among dental school students in Turkey and this finding points out the need for novel and more effective precautions against tobacco. Amaç: Bu anket çalışması, Türkiye’de birinci ve beşinci sınıf diş hekimliği öğrencilerinin tütün ürünleri konusundaki tutumlarını araştırmayı ve tütün ürünleri kullananların prevalansını belirlemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu araştırma 1 Mayıs-30 Haziran 2018 tarihleri arasında, birinci ve beşinci sınıfta okuyan öğrencilerle, Türkiye’nin farklı bölglerinde bulunan 11 diş hekimliği fakültesinde eş zamanlı olarak gerçekleştirildi. Anket formlarının istatistiksel analizi aşamasında SPSS 21.0 programından yararlanıldı. Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılan 1228 öğrencilerden 1096 kişi çevrimiçi anket sorularının tamamını yanıtladı. Katılımcıların çoğunluğunun kadın (n=691, %63.05) olduğu, yaş ortalamasının ise 21,8±2,9 olduğu belirlendi. (yaş aralığı 18-54). Sigara içenlerin genel oranı %37,96 olmasına rağmen, katılımcıların %62,04’ü en az bir kez tütün ürünü denediklerini bildirdiler. Sigara içenlerin yarısından fazlası (%55,19) sigarayı bırakmak istediklerini belirtirken, bu öğrencilerin %29,26’sının son altı ay içinde sigarayı bırakma girişiminde bulundukları tespit edildi. Tüm katılımcıların sadece %19,49’u kendilerini sigara içmeye oldukça bağımlı olarak tanımladı. Nargile içenlerin oranı %41,2 idi ve nargile içenlerin %83,7’si nargileyi bırakmaya niyetlerinin olmadığını bildirdi. Sonuç: Bu çalışma, Türkiye’de sigara içme oranının diş hekimliği fakültesi öğrencileri arasında oldukça yüksek olduğunu ve tütün karşıtı yeni ve daha etkili önlemlere ihtiyaç duyulduğunu göstermektedir.

Amaç: Bu retrospektif çalışmanın amacı özel kliniğe başvuran tam veya kısmidişsiz hastalara uygulanan subkrestal ve platform switch dental implantlarınetrafındaki marjinal kemik seviyelerini tespit etmektir.Gereç ve Yöntemler: Ortalama 5.3±1.7 yıldır fonksiyonda olan 200 dentalimplanta sahip 64 hasta bu çalışmaya dahil edilmiştir. İmplantlar tek ya daçift aşamalı cerrahi yöntemle 0,5 mm subkrestal yerleştirilmiştir. İmplantlarındağılımı, boyutları, protetik restorasyon tipleri ve marjinal kemik seviyelerikalibre edilmiş tek bir araştırmacı tarafından yapılmıştır.Bugular: Genel olarak ortalama marjinal kemik kaybı 0.82±1.6 mm olarakbulundu. İmplantların %66’sında (n=81) kemik kaybı görülmezken,%28’inde (n=35) >1 mm kemik kaybı, %20’sinde (n=25) >2 mm kemik kaybıgörüldü. Ortlama 1-≤3 yıldır fonksiyonda olan 18 implantın 14’ünde kemikkaybı görülmedi. Ortalama 3-≤5 yıldır fonksiyonda olan implantların%25’inde (n=15) kemik kaybı >1 mm ve %12’sine (n=7) kemik kaybı >2 mmolarak bulundu. Bu çalışmada implantların büyük bir çoğunluğunun 5 yıldanfazladır fonksiyonda olduğu tespit edildi (n=122). Bunlardan %66’sında(n=81) kemik kaybı görülmezken, %28’inde (n=35) >1 mm kemik kaybı ve%20’sinde (n=25) >2 mm kemik kaybı görüldü.Sonuç: Bu retrospektif çalışmanın sınırları dahilinde, uzun bir takip dönemisonucunda platform switch ve subkrestal yerleştirilen implantlar etrafındaoldukça az kemik kaybı görüldüğü söylenebilir. Ancak, bu bulguyu desteklemekiçin daha fazla çalışmaya ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır., Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the marginalbone levels around platform-switched dental implants placed subcrestallyin partially or totally edentulous patients who had been treated in a privatepractice.Methods: A total of 200 implants placed in 64 patients, with a mean follow-up time of 5.3±1.7 years, were included in the study. Implants wereplaced 0.5 mm subcrestally via one- or two-stage surgical approach. Dataregarding the distribution and diameter of the implants, the type of theprosthetic restoration, and marginal bone levels were assessed by one calibratedexaminer.Results: Overall, the mean marginal bone loss was found to be 0.82±1.6mm, and 66% of the implants (n=81) showed no bone loss, whereas 28%(n=35) showed bone loss >1mm, and 20% (n=25) showed bone loss >2mm.Out of 18 implants in use for 1–3 years, 14 of them showed no bone loss.Among implants that were in function for 3–5 years, 25% (n=15) showedbone loss >1mm, and 12% (n=7) showed bone loss >2mm. In this study, themajority of the implants were in use for more than 5 years (n=122). Out ofthem, 66% (n=81) showed no bone loss, whereas 28% (n=35) showed boneloss >1 mm, and 20% (n=25) showed bone loss >2mm.Conclusion: Within the limits of this retrospective study, one can saythat slight amount of marginal bone loss is observed around the platform-switched implants placed subcrestally in a long-term follow-up. However,further studies are needed to confirm this finding.
