Abstract In the present work, the gamma ray shielding performance of Fe/Cr16/Ni72, Fe/Cr21/Ni32.5, Fe/Cr25/Ni20, Fe/Cr18/Ni10 and Fe/Cr17/Ni7 ternary alloys was investigated. In this respect, some important photon shielding parameters such as the linear and mass attenuation coefficients, mean free path, half, quarter and tenth value layers, effective conductivity and effective atomic number for the selected ternary alloys were determined experimentally in the energy range of 81 keV–1333 keV emitted by 22Na, 54Mn, 57Co, 60Co, 133Ba and 137Cs radioactive sources. Besides, the obtained parameters were compared with the calculated values with the help of WinXCOM program based on mixture rule. It is observed that the theoretical results confirmed the experimental results. According to the obtained experimental and theoretical results of all presented parameters, Fe/Cr16Ni72 alloy has the best radiation shielding properties, while Fe/Cr17/Ni7 alloys possesses the worst radiation shielding properties among the selected alloys. Highlights • The radiation protection properties of five ternary alloys were evaluated. • The μ/ρ, μ, MFP, HVL, TVL, QVL and σ parameters were determined. • The experiments were performed using narrow beam geometry. • Fe/Cr16/Ni72 is the best radiation shielding material among the selected alloys. • The μ/ρ results of alloys were compared with those of Pb and ordinary concrete.
