In this paper we introduce the clus model, which has been newly implemented in the X-ray spectral fitting software package SPEX. Based on the 3D radial profiles of the gas density, temperature, metal abundance, turbulent, and inflow/outflow velocities, the clus model creates spectra for a chosen projected region on the sky. Additionally, it can also take into account the resonant scattering. We show a few applications of the clus model on simulated spectra of the massive elliptical galaxy NGC 4636, and galaxy clusters A383, A2029, A1795, A262, and the Perseus cluster. We quantify the effect of projection, as well as resonant scattering on inferred profiles of the iron abundance and temperature, assuming the resolution similar to Chandra ACIS-S and XRISM Resolve. Our results show that, depending on the mass of the object, as well as the projected distance from its core, neither a single-temperature, double-temperature, nor the Gaussian-shaped differential emission measure models can accurately describe the input emission measure distribution of these massive objects. The largest effect of projection as well as resonant scattering is seen for projected profiles of iron abundance of NGC 4636, where we are able to reproduce the observed iron abundance drop in its inner-most few kiloparsecs. Furthermore, we find that projection effects also influence the best-fit temperature, and the magnitude of this effect varies depending on the underlying hydrodynamical profiles of individual objects. In the core, the projection effects are the largest for A1795 and NGC 4636, while in the outskirts the largest difference between 2D and 3D temperature profiles are for Perseus and A1795, regardless of the instrumental resolution. Black hole accretion in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is coupled to the evolution of their host galaxies. Outflowing winds in AGN can play an important role in this evolution through the resulting feedback mechanism. Multi-wavelength spectroscopy is key for probing the intertwined physics of inflows and outflows in AGN. However, with the current spectrometers, crucial properties of the ionized outflows are poorly understood, such as their coupling to the accretion rate, their launching mechanism, and their kinetic power. In this paper we discuss the need for simultaneous X-ray and UV high-resolution spectroscopy for tackling outstanding questions on these outflows in AGN. The instrumental requirements for achieving the scientific objectives are addressed. We demonstrate that these requirements would be facilitated by the proposed Arcus Probe mission concept. The multi-wavelength spectroscopy and timing by Arcus would enable us to establish the kinematics and ionization structure of the entire ionized outflow, extending from the vicinity of the accretion disk to the outskirts of the host galaxy. Multi-wavelength spectroscopy of NGC 5548 revealed remarkable changes due to presence of an obscuring wind from the accretion disk. This broadened our understanding of obscuration and outflows in AGN. Swift monitoring of NGC 5548 shows that over the last 10 years the obscuration has gradually declined. This provides a valuable opportunity for analyses that have not been feasible before because of too much obscuration. The lowered obscuration, together with the high energy spectral coverage of Chandra HETG, facilitate the first study of X-ray absorption lines in the obscured state. The comparison of the lines (Mg XI, Mg XII, Si XIII, and Si XIV) between the new and historical spectra reveals interesting changes, most notably the He-like absorption being significantly diminished in 2022. Our study finds that the changes are caused by an increase in both the ionization parameter and the column density of the warm-absorber outflow in the obscured state. This is contrary to the shielding scenario that is evident in the appearance of the UV lines, where the inner obscuring wind shields outflows that are located further out, thus lowering their ionization. The X-ray absorption lines in the HETG spectra appear to be unaffected by the obscuration. The results suggest that the shielding is complex since various components of the ionized outflow are impacted differently. We explore various possibilities for the variability behavior of the X-ray absorption lines and find that the orbital motion of a clumpy ionized outflow traversing our line of sight is the most likely explanation., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ), 9 pages, 5 figures

The warm-hot plasma in cosmic web filaments is thought to comprise a large fraction of the gas in the local Universe. So far, the search for this gas has focused on mapping its emission, or detecting its absorption signatures against bright, point-like sources. Future, non-dispersive, high spectral resolution X-ray detectors will, for the first time, enable absorption studies against extended objects. Here, we use the Hydrangea cosmological hydrodynamical simulations to predict the expected properties of intergalactic gas in and around massive galaxy clusters, and investigate the prospects of detecting it in absorption against the bright cores of nearby, massive, relaxed galaxy clusters. We probe a total of $138$ projections from the simulation volumes, finding $16$ directions with a total column density $N_{O VII} > 10^{14.5}$ cm$^{-2}$. The strongest absorbers are typically shifted by $\pm 1000$ km/s with respect to the rest frame of the cluster they are nearest to. Realistic mock observations with future micro-calorimeters, such as the Athena X-ray Integral Field Unit or the proposed Line Emission Mapper (LEM) X-ray probe, show that the detection of cosmic web filaments in O VII and O VIII absorption against galaxy cluster cores will be feasible. An O VII detection with a $5\sigma$ significance can be achieved in $10-250$ ks with Athena for most of the galaxy clusters considered. Outflowing wind as one type of AGN feedback, which involves noncollimated ionized winds prevalent in Seyfert-1 AGNs, impacts their host galaxy by carrying kinetic energy outwards. However, the distance of the outflowing wind is poorly constrained due to a lack of direct imaging observations, which limits our understanding of their kinetic power and therefore makes the impact on the local galactic environment unclear. One potential approach involves a determination of the density of the ionized plasma, making it possible to derive the distance using the ionization parameter {\xi}, which can be measured based on the ionization state. Here, by applying a new time-dependent photoionization model, tpho, in SPEX, we define a new approach, the tpho-delay method, to calculate/predict a detectable density range for warm absorbers of NGC 3783. The tpho model solves self-consistently the time-dependent ionic concentrations, which enables us to study delayed states of the plasma in detail. We show that it is crucial to model the non-equilibrium effects accurately for the delayed phase, where the non-equilibrium and equilibrium models diverge significantly. Finally, we calculate the crossing time to consider the effect of the transverse motion of the outflow on the intrinsic luminosity variation. It is expected that future spectroscopic observations with more sensitive instruments will provide more accurate constraints on the outflow density, and thereby on the feedback energetics., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 13 pages, 12 figures

The past two decades have witnessed the rapid growth of our knowledge of the X-ray Universe thanks to flagship X-ray space observatories like XMM-Newton and Chandra. A significant portion of discoveries would have been impossible without the X-ray diffractive grating spectrometers aboard these two space observatories. We briefly overview the physical principles of diffractive grating spectrometers as the background to the beginning of a new era with the next-generation (diffractive and non-diffractive) high-resolution X-ray spectrometers. This chapter focuses on the Reflection Grating Spectrometer aboard XMM-Newton, which provides high-quality high-resolution spectra in the soft X-ray band. Its performance and excellent calibration quality have allowed breakthrough advancements in a wide range of astrophysical topics. The physical properties of the faint and extremely tenuous plasma in the far outskirts of galaxy clusters, the circumgalactic media of normal galaxies, and filaments of the cosmic web, remain one of the biggest unknowns in our story of large-scale structure evolution. Modelling the spectral features due to emission and absorption from this very diffuse plasma poses a challenge, as both collisional and photo-ionisation processes must be accounted for. In this paper, we study the ionisation by photons emitted by the intra-cluster medium in addition to the photo-ionisation by the cosmic UV/X-ray background on gas in the vicinity of galaxy clusters. For near massive clusters such as A2029, the ionisation parameter can no longer describe the ionisation balance uniquely. The ionisation fractions (in particular of C IV, C V, C VI, N VII, O VI, O VII, O VIII, Ne VIII, Ne IX, and Fe XVII) obtained by taking into account the photoionisation by the cosmic background are either an upper or lower limit to the ionisation fraction calculated as a function of distance from the emission from the cluster. Using a toy model of a cosmic web filament, we predict how the cluster illumination changes the column densities for two different orientations of the line of sight. For lines of sight passing close to the cluster outskirts, O VI can be suppressed by a factor of up to $4.5$, O VII by a factor of $2.2$, C V by a factor of $3$, and Ne VIII can be boosted by a factor of $2$, for low density gas., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

NGC~5548 is an X-ray bright Seyfert 1 active galaxy. It exhibits a variety of spectroscopic features in the soft X-ray band, including in particular the absorption by the AGN outflows of a broad range of ionization states, with column densities up to 1E27 /m^2, and having speeds up to several thousand kilometers per second. The known emission features are in broad agreement with photoionized X-ray narrow and broad emission line models. We report on an X-ray spectroscopic study using 1.1 Ms XMM-Newton and 0.9 Ms Chandra grating observations of NGC 5548 spanning two decades. The aim is to search and characterize any potential spectroscopic features in addition to the known primary spectral components that are already modeled in high precision. We detect a weak unidentified excess emission feature at 18.4 Angstrom (18.1 Angstrom in the restframe). The feature is seen at >5 sigma statistical significance taking into account the look elsewhere effect. No known instrumental issues, atomic transitions, and astrophysical effects can explain this excess. The observed intensity of the possible feature seems to anti-correlate in time with the hardness ratio of the source. However, the variability might not be intrinsic, it might be caused by the time-variable obscuration by the outflows. An intriguing possibility is the line emission from charge exchange between a partially ionized outflow and a neutral layer in the same outflow, or in the close environment. A decade ago the archetypal Seyfert-1 galaxy NGC 5548 was discovered to have undergone major spectral changes. The soft X-ray flux had dropped by a factor of 30 while new broad and blueshifted UV absorption lines appeared. This was explained by the emergence of a new obscuring wind from the accretion disk. Here we report on the striking long-term variability of the obscuring disk wind in NGC 5548 including new observations taken in 2021-2022 with the Swift Observatory and the Hubble Space Telescope's (HST) Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS). The X-ray spectral hardening as a result of obscuration has declined over the years, reaching its lowest in 2022 at which point we find the broad C IV UV absorption line to be nearly vanished. The associated narrow low-ionization UV absorption lines, produced previously when shielded from the X-rays, are also remarkably diminished in 2022. We find a highly significant correlation between the variabilities of the X-ray hardening and the equivalent width of the broad C IV absorption line, demonstrating that X-ray obscuration is inherently linked to disk winds. We derive for the first time a relation between the X-ray and UV covering fractions of the obscuring wind using its long-term evolution. The diminished X-ray obscuration and UV absorption are likely caused by an increasingly intermittent supply of outflowing streams from the accretion disk. There has been a growing request from the X-ray astronomy community for a quantitative estimate of systematic uncertainties originating from the atomic data used in plasma codes. Though there have been several studies looking into atomic data uncertainties using theoretical calculations, in general, there is no commonly accepted solution for this task. We present a new approach for estimating uncertainties in the line emissivities for the current models of collisional plasma, mainly based upon dedicated analysis of observed high resolution spectra of stellar coronae and galaxy clusters. We find that the systematic uncertainties of the observed lines consistently show anti-correlation with the model line fluxes, after properly accounting for the additional uncertainties from the ion concentration calculation. The strong lines in the spectra are in general better reproduced, indicating that the atomic data and modeling of the main transitions are more accurate than those for the minor ones. This underlying anti-correlation is found to be roughly independent on source properties, line positions, ion species, and the line formation processes. We further apply our method to the simulated XRISM and Athena observations of collisional plasma sources and discuss the impact of uncertainties on the interpretation of these spectra. The Seyfert-1 galaxy NGC 3516 has undergone major spectral changes in recent years. In 2017 we obtained Chandra, NuSTAR, and Swift observations during its new low-flux state. Using these observations we model the spectral energy distribution (SED) and the intrinsic X-ray absorption, and compare the results with those from historical observations taken in 2006. We thereby investigate the effects of the changing-look phenomenon on the accretion-powered radiation and the ionized outflows. Compared to its normal high-flux state in 2006, the intrinsic bolometric luminosity of NGC 3516 was lower by a factor of 4 to 8 during 2017. Our SED modeling shows a significant decline in the luminosity of all the continuum components from the accretion disk and the X-ray source. As a consequence, the reprocessed X-ray emission lines have also become fainter. The Swift monitoring of NGC 3516 shows remarkable X-ray spectral variability on short (weeks) and long (years) timescales. We investigate whether this variability is driven by obscuration or the intrinsic continuum. We find that the new low-flux spectrum of NGC 3516, and its variability, do not require any new or variable obscuration, and instead can be explained by changes in the ionizing SED that result in lowering of the ionization of the warm-absorber outflows. This in turn induces enhanced X-ray absorption by the warm-absorber outflows, mimicking the presence of new obscuring gas. Hot atmospheres of massive galaxies are enriched with metals. Elemental abundances measured in the X-ray band have been used to study the chemical enrichment of supernova remnants, elliptical galaxies, groups and clusters of galaxies. Here we measure the elemental abundances of the hot atmosphere of luminous infrared galaxy Arp 299 observed with XMM-Newton. To measure the abundances in the hot atmosphere, we use a multi-temperature thermal plasma model, which provides a better fit to the Reflection Grating Spectrometer data. The observed Fe/O abundance ratio is subsolar, while those of Ne/O and Mg/O are slightly above solar. Core-collapse supernovae (SNcc) are the dominant metal factory of elements like O, Ne, and Mg. We find some deviations between the observed abundance patterns and theoretical ones from a simple chemical enrichment model. One possible explanation is that massive stars with $M_{\star}\gtrsim23-27~M_{\odot}$ might not explode as SNcc and enrich the hot atmosphere. This is in accordance with the missing massive SNcc progenitors problem, where very massive progenitors $M_{\star}\gtrsim18~M_{\odot}$ of SNcc have not been clearly detected. It is also possible that theoretical SNcc nucleosynthesis yields of Mg/O yields are underestimated., Comment: ApJL accepted

Previous X-ray studies of the Perseus Cluster, consisting of 85 Suzaku pointings along eight azimuthal directions, revealed a particularly steep decrease in the projected temperature profile near the virial radius (~r200) towards the northwest (NW). To further explore this shock candidate, another 4 Suzaku observations on the NW edge of the Perseus Cluster have been obtained. These deeper data were designed to provide the best possible control of systematic uncertainties in the spectral analysis. Using the combined Suzaku observations, we have carefully investigated this interesting region by analyzing the spectra of various annuli and extracting projected thermodynamic profiles. We find that the projected temperature profile shows a break near r200, indicating a shock with M = 1.9+-0.3. Corresponding discontinuities are also found in the projected emission measure and the density profiles at the same location. This evidence of a shock front so far away from the cluster center is unprecedented, and may provide a first insight into the properties of large-scale virial shocks which shape the process of galaxy cluster growth., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted by A&A

The Hitomi results for the Perseus cluster have shown that accurate atomic models are essential to the success of X-ray spectroscopic missions, and just as important as knowledge on instrumental calibration and astrophysical modeling. Preparing the models requires a multifaceted approach, including theoretical calculations, laboratory measurements, and calibration using real observations. In a previous paper, we presented a calculation of the electron impact cross sections on the transitions forming the Fe-L complex. In the present work, we systematically test the calculation against cross sections of ions measured in an electron beam ion trap experiment. A two-dimensional analysis in the electron beam energies and X-ray photon energies is utilized to disentangle radiative channels following dielectronic recombination, direct electron-impact excitation, and resonant excitation processes in the experimental data. The data calibrated through laboratory measurements are further fed into global modeling of the Chandra grating spectrum of Capella. We investigate and compare the fit quality, as well as sensitivity of the derived physical parameters to the underlying atomic data and the astrophysical plasma modeling. We further list the potential areas of disagreement between the observation and the present calculations, which in turn calls for renewed efforts in theoretical calculations and targeted laboratory measurements., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present the SPEX software package for modeling and fitting X-ray spectra. Our group has developed spectral models, atomic data and code for X-ray applications since the 1970's. Since the 1990's these are further developed in the public SPEX package. In the last decades, X-ray spectroscopy has been revolutionized by the high-resolution grating spectrometers aboard XMM-Newton and Chandra. Currently, new high-resolution detectors aboard the Hitomi mission, and future missions, like XRISM and Athena, will provide another major step forward in spectral resolution. This poses challenges for us to increase the atomic database substantially, while keeping model calculation times short. The high-resolution X-ray spectrum of the Perseus galaxy cluster observed with the Hitomi satellite challenges astrophysical collisional ionized plasma models that are widely used in the community. Although Hitomi spun out of control, several Hitomi-level missions have been proposed and some funded. The spectrometers aboard these future missions have a broader energy range and/or a higher spectral resolution to achieve different scientific goals. Accurate plasma models and atomic data are crucial for plasma diagnostics of high-quality spectra. Here, we present a few cases where improvement of plasma diagnostics will be decisive to better understand celestial bodies and their physical processes at play. Clusters of galaxies are the largest known gravitationally-bound structures in the Universe. When clusters collide, they create merger shocks on cosmological scales, which transform most of the kinetic energy carried by the cluster gaseous halos into heat. Observations of merger shocks provide key information of the merger dynamics, and enable insights into the formation and thermal history of the large-scale structures. Nearly all of the merger shocks are found in systems where the clusters have already collided, knowledge of shocks in the pre-merger phase is a crucial missing ingredient. Here we report on the discovery of a unique shock in a cluster pair 1E 2216 and 1E 2215. The two clusters are observed at an early phase of major merger. Contrary to all the known merger shocks observed ubiquitously on merger axes, the new shock propagates outward along the equatorial plane of the merger. This discovery uncovers an important epoch in the formation of massive clusters, when the rapid approach of the cluster pair leads to strong compression of gas along the merger axis. Current theoretical models predict that the bulk of the shock energy might be dissipated outside the clusters, and eventually turn into heat of the pristine gas in the circum-cluster space., Comment: Nature Astronomy, accepted version

The Hitomi results on the Perseus cluster lead to improvements in our knowledge of atomic physics which are crucial for the precise diagnostic of hot astrophysical plasma observed with high-resolution X-ray spectrometers. However, modeling uncertainties remain, both within but especially beyond Hitomi's spectral window. A major challenge in spectral modeling is the Fe-L spectrum, which is basically a complex assembly of n>2 to n=2 transitions of Fe ions in different ionization states, affected by a range of atomic processes such as collisional excitation, resonant excitation, radiative recombination, dielectronic recombination, and innershell ionization. In this paper we perform a large-scale theoretical calculation on each of the processes with the flexible atomic code (FAC), focusing on ions of Fe XVII to Fe XXIV that form the main body of the Fe-L complex. The new data are found to be consistent within 20% with the recent individual R-matrix calculations for the main Fe-L lines. By further testing the new FAC calculations with the high-quality RGS data from 15 elliptical galaxies and galaxy clusters, we note that the new model gives systematically better fits than the current SPEX v3.04 code, and the mean Fe abundance decreases by 12%, while the O/Fe ratio increases by 16% compared with the results from the current code. Comparing the FAC fit results to those with the R-matrix calculations, we find a temperature-dependent discrepancy of up to ~10% on the Fe abundance between the two theoretical models. Further dedicated tests with both observed spectra and targeted laboratory measurements are needed to resolve the discrepancies, and ultimately, to get the atomic data ready for the next high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy mission., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

In this White Paper we present the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to Observatory Science targets. These include flaring stars, supernova remnants, accreting white dwarfs, low and high mass X-ray binaries, radio quiet and radio loud active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, and gamma-ray bursts. eXTP will be excellently suited to study one common aspect of these objects: their often transient nature. The hot intracluster medium (ICM) pervading galaxy clusters and groups is rich in metals, which were synthesised by billions of supernovae and have accumulated in cluster gravitational wells for several Gyrs. Since the products of both Type Ia and core-collapse supernovae - expected to explode over different time scales - are found in the ICM, constraining accurately the chemical composition these hot atmospheres can provide invaluable information on the history of the enrichment of large-scale structures. Recently, Hitomi observations reported solar abundance ratios in the core of the Perseus cluster, in tension with previous XMM-Newton measurements obtained for 44 cool-core clusters, groups, and massive ellipticals (the CHEERS sample). In this work, we revisit the CHEERS results by using an updated version of the spectral code used to fit the data (SPEXACT v3), the same as was used to obtain the Hitomi measurements. Despite limitations in the spectral resolution, the average Cr/Fe and Ni/Fe ratios are now found to be remarkably consistent with unity and in excellent agreement with the Hitomi results. X-ray measurements find systematically lower Fe abundances in the X-ray emitting haloes pervading groups ($kT\lesssim1.7$ keV) than in clusters of galaxies. These results have been difficult to reconcile with theoretical predictions. However, models using incomplete atomic data or the assumption of isothermal plasmas may have biased the best fit Fe abundance in groups and giant elliptical galaxies low. In this work, we take advantage of a major update of the atomic code in the spectral fitting package SPEX to re-evaluate the Fe abundance in 43 clusters, groups, and elliptical galaxies (the CHEERS sample) in a self-consistent analysis and within a common radius of 0.1$r_{500}$. For the first time, we report a remarkably similar average Fe enrichment in all these systems. Unlike previous results, this strongly suggests that metals are synthesised and transported in these haloes with the same average efficiency across two orders of magnitude in total mass. We show that the previous metallicity measurements in low temperature systems were biased low due to incomplete atomic data in the spectral fitting codes. Though theoretically expected, the charge exchange emission from galaxy clusters has not yet been confidently detected. Accumulating hints were reported recently, including a rather marginal detection with the Hitomi data of the Perseus cluster. As suggested in Gu et al. (2015), a detection of charge exchange line emission from galaxy clusters would not only impact the interpretation of the newly-discovered 3.5 keV line, but also open up a new research topic on the interaction between hot and cold matter in clusters. We aim to perform the most systematic search for the O VIII charge exchange line in cluster spectra using the RGS on board XMM. We introduce a sample of 21 clusters observed with the RGS. The dominating thermal plasma emission is modeled and subtracted with a two-temperature CIE component, and the residuals are stacked for the line search. The systematic uncertainties in the fits are quantified by refitting the spectra with a varying continuum and line broadening. By the residual stacking, we do find a hint of a line-like feature at 14.82 A, the characteristic wavelength expected for oxygen charge exchange. This feature has a marginal significance of 2.8 sigma, and the average equivalent width is 2.5E-4 keV. We further demonstrate that the putative feature can be hardly affected by the systematic errors from continuum modelling and instrumental effects, or the atomic uncertainties of the neighbouring thermal lines. Assuming a realistic temperature and abundance pattern, the physical model implied by the possible oxygen line agrees well with the theoretical model proposed previously to explain the reported 3.5 keV line. If the charge exchange source indeed exists, we would expect that the oxygen abundance is potentially overestimated by 8-22% in previous X-ray measurements which assumed pure thermal lines., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

We present the results of Suzaku and Chandra observations of the galaxy cluster RXC J1053.7+5453 ($z=0.0704$), which contains a radio relic. The radio relic is located at the distance of $\sim 540$ kpc from the X-ray peak toward the west. We measured the temperature of this cluster for the first time. The resultant temperature in the center is $ \sim 1.3$ keV, which is lower than the value expected from the X-ray luminosity - temperature and the velocity dispersion - temperature relation. Though we did not find a significant temperature jump at the outer edge of the relic, our results suggest that the temperature decreases outward across the relic. Assuming the existence of the shock at the relic, its Mach number becomes $M \simeq 1.4 $. A possible spatial variation of Mach number along the relic is suggested. Additionally, a sharp surface brightness edge is found at the distance of $\sim 160$ kpc from the X-ray peak toward the west in the Chandra image. We performed X-ray spectral and surface brightness analyses around the edge with Suzaku and Chandra data, respectively. The obtained surface brightness and temperature profiles suggest that this edge is not a shock but likely a cold front. Alternatively, it cannot be ruled out that thermal pressure is really discontinuous across the edge. In this case, if the pressure across the surface brightness edge is in equilibrium, other forms of pressure sources, such as cosmic-rays, are necessary. We searched for the non-thermal inverse Compton component in the relic region. Assuming the photon index $ \Gamma = 2.0$, the resultant upper limit of the flux is $1.9 \times 10^{-14} {\rm erg \ s^{-1} \ cm^{-2}}$ for $4.50 \times 10^{-3} {\rm \ deg^{2}}$ area in the 0.3-10 keV band, which implies that the lower limit of magnetic field strength becomes $ 0.7 {\rm \ \mu G}$., Comment: 13page, 8 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1508.05845

Charge exchange emission is known to provide a key diagnostic to the interface between hot and cold matter in many astrophysical environments. Most of the recent charge exchange studies focus on its emission in the X-ray band, but few on the UV part, although the latter can also provide a powerful probe of the charge exchange process. An atomic calculation, as well as an application to observed data, are presented to explore and describe the potential use of the UV data for the study of cosmic charge exchange. Using the newest charge exchange model in the SPEX code v3.03, we re-analyze an archival Hubble STIS data of the central region of NGC 1275. The NGC 1275 spectrum shows hints for three possible weak lines at about 1223.6~{\AA}, 1242.4~{\AA}, and 1244.0~{\AA}, each with a significance of about $2-3\sigma$. The putative features are best explained by charge exchange between highly ionized hydrogen, neon, and sulfur with neutral matter. The wavelengths of the charge exchange lines are found robustly with uncertainties $\leq 0.3$~{\AA}. The possible charge exchange emission shows a line-of-sight velocity offset of about $-3400$ km s$^{-1}$ with respect to the NGC 1275 nucleus, which resembles one of the Ly$\alpha$ absorbers reported in Baum et al. (2005). This indicates that the charge exchange lines might be emitted as the same position of the absorber, which could be ascribed to outflowing gas from the nucleus., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

The hot intra-cluster medium (ICM) permeating galaxy clusters and groups is not pristine, as it is continuously enriched by metals synthesised in Type Ia (SNIa) and core-collapse (SNcc) supernovae since the major epoch of star formation (z ~ 2-3). The cluster/group enrichment history and the mechanisms responsible for releasing and mixing the metals can be probed via the radial distribution of SNIa and SNcc products within the ICM. In this paper, we use deep XMM-Newton/EPIC observations from a sample of 44 nearby cool-core galaxy clusters, groups, and ellipticals (CHEERS) to constrain the average radial O, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe, and Ni abundance profiles. The radial distributions of all these elements, averaged over a large sample for the first time, represent the best constrained profiles available currently. We find an overall decrease of the Fe abundance with radius out to ~$0.9 r_{500}$ and ~$0.6 r_{500}$ for clusters and groups, respectively, in good agreement with predictions from the most recent hydrodynamical simulations. The average radial profiles of all the other elements (X) are also centrally peaked and, when rescaled to their average central X/Fe ratios, follow well the Fe profile out to at least ~0.5$r_{500}$. Using two sets of SNIa and SNcc yield models reproducing well the X/Fe abundance pattern in the core, we find that, as predicted by recent simulations, the relative contribution of SNIa (SNcc) to the total ICM enrichment is consistent with being uniform at all radii, both for clusters and groups. In addition to implying that the central metal peak is balanced between SNIa and SNcc, our results suggest that the enriching SNIa and SNcc products must share the same origin, and that the delay between the bulk of the SNIa and SNcc explosions must be shorter than the timescale necessary to diffuse out the metals., Comment: 28 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The hot intra-cluster medium (ICM) is rich in metals, which are synthesised by supernovae (SNe) and accumulate over time into the deep gravitational potential well of clusters of galaxies. Since most of the elements visible in X-rays are formed by type Ia (SNIa) and/or core-collapse (SNcc) supernovae, measuring their abundances gives us direct information on the nucleosynthesis products of billions of SNe since the epoch of the star formation peak (z~2-3). In this study, we compare the most accurate average X/Fe abundance ratios (compiled in a previous work from XMM-Newton EPIC and RGS observations of 44 galaxy clusters, groups, and ellipticals), representative of the chemical enrichment in the nearby ICM, to various SNIa and SNcc nucleosynthesis models found in the literature. The use of a SNcc model combined to any favoured standard SNIa model (deflagration or delayed-detonation) fails to reproduce our abundance pattern. In particular, the Ca/Fe and Ni/Fe ratios are significantly underestimated by the models. We show that the Ca/Fe ratio can be reproduced better, either by taking a SNIa delayed-detonation model that matches the observations of the Tycho supernova remnant, or by adding a contribution from the Ca-rich gap transient SNe, whose material should easily mix into the hot ICM. On the other hand, the Ni/Fe ratio can be reproduced better by assuming that both deflagration and delayed-detonation SNIa contribute in similar proportions to the ICM enrichment. In either case, the fraction of SNIa over the total number of SNe (SNIa+SNcc) contributing to the ICM enrichment ranges within 29-45%. This fraction is found to be systematically higher than the corresponding SNIa/SNe fraction contributing to the enrichment of the proto-solar environnement (15-25%). High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with Hitomi was expected to resolve the origin of the faint unidentified E=3.5 keV emission line reported in several low-resolution studies of various massive systems, such as galaxies and clusters, including the Perseus cluster. We have analyzed the Hitomi first-light observation of the Perseus cluster. The emission line expected for Perseus based on the XMM-Newton signal from the large cluster sample under the dark matter decay scenario is too faint to be detectable in the Hitomi data. However, the previously reported 3.5 keV flux from Perseus was anomalously high compared to the sample-based prediction. We find no unidentified line at the reported high flux level. Taking into account the XMM measurement uncertainties for this region, the inconsistency with Hitomi is at a 99% significance for a broad dark-matter line and at 99.7% for a narrow line from the gas. We do not find anomalously high fluxes of the nearby faint K line or the Ar satellite line that were proposed as explanations for the earlier 3.5 keV detections. We do find a hint of a broad excess near the energies of high-n transitions of Sxvi (E=3.44 keV rest-frame) -- a possible signature of charge exchange in the molecular nebula and another proposed explanation for the unidentified line. While its energy is consistent with XMM pn detections, it is unlikely to explain the MOS signal. The hot intra-cluster medium (ICM) is rich in metals, which are synthesized by supernovae (SNe) explosions and accumulate over time into the deep gravitational potential well of clusters of galaxies. Since most of the elements visible in X-rays are formed by type Ia (SNIa) and/or core-collapse (SNcc) supernovae, measuring their abundances gives us direct information on the nucleosynthesis products of billions of SNe since the epoch of the star formation peak (z ~ 2-3). In this study, we use the EPIC and RGS instruments onboard XMM-Newton to measure the abundances of 9 elements (O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe and Ni) from a sample of 44 nearby cool-core galaxy clusters, groups, and elliptical galaxies. We find that the Fe abundance shows a large scatter (~20-40%) over the sample, within 0.2$r_{500}$ and, especially, 0.05$r_{500}$. Unlike the absolute Fe abundance, the abundance ratios (X/Fe) are quite uniform over the considered temperature range (~0.6-8 keV), and with a limited scatter. In addition to a unprecedented treatment of systematic uncertainties, we provide the most accurate abundance ratios measured so far in the ICM, including Cr/Fe and Mn/Fe that we firmly detect (>4{\sigma} with MOS and pn independently). We find that Cr/Fe, Mn/Fe and Ni/Fe, differ significantly from the proto-solar values. However, the large uncertainties in the proto-solar abundances prevent us from making a robust comparison between the local and the intra-cluster chemical enrichments. We also note that, interestingly, and despite the large net exposure time (~4.5 Ms) of our dataset, no line emission feature is seen around ~3.5 keV., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present a detailed analysis of xmm X-ray observations of the Narrow line Seyfert-1 (NLS1) galaxy Ark 564 taken between 2000 and 2011. High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy is carried out on the resultant high signal-to-noise stacked spectrum. We find three separate photoionised warm absorbers outflowing at velocities unusually lower than typical NLS1s. Using recombination timescale estimates, improved constraints on the location of these clouds show they could be located beyond 4 pc from the central source. Our estimates of the outflow kinetics suggest that the AGN in Ark 564 is unlikely to affect the host galaxy in its current state but over typical lifetime of 10^7 years the ISM could be affected. Tidal forces close to massive black holes can violently disrupt stars that make a close approach. These extreme events are discovered via bright X-ray and optical/UV flares in galactic centers. Prior studies based on modeling decaying flux trends have been able to estimate broad properties, such as the mass accretion rate. Here we report the detection of flows of highly ionized X-ray gas in high-resolution X-ray spectra of a nearby tidal disruption event. Variability within the absorption-dominated spectra indicates that the gas is relatively close to the black hole. Narrow line widths indicate that the gas does not stretch over a large range of radii, giving a low volume filling factor. Modest outflow speeds of a few hundred kilometers per second are observed, significantly below the escape speed from the radius set by variability. The gas flow is consistent with a rotating wind from the inner, super-Eddington region of a nascent accretion disk, or with a filament of disrupted stellar gas near to the apocenter of an elliptical orbit. Feedback from AGN, galactic mergers, and sloshing are thought to give rise to turbulence, which may prevent cooling in clusters. We aim to measure the turbulence in clusters of galaxies and compare the measurements to some of their structural and evolutionary properties. It is possible to measure the turbulence of the hot gas in clusters by estimating the velocity widths of their X-ray emission lines. The RGS Spectrometers aboard XMM-Newton are currently the only instruments provided with sufficient effective area and spectral resolution in this energy domain. We benefited from excellent 1.6Ms new data provided by the CHEERS project. The new observations improve the quality of the archival data and allow us to place constraints for some clusters, which were not accessible in previous work. One-half of the sample shows upper limits on turbulence less than 500km/s. For several sources, our data are consistent with relatively strong turbulence with upper limits on the velocity widths that are larger than 1000km/s. The NGC507 group of galaxies shows transonic velocities, which are most likely associated with the merging phenomena and bulk motions occurring in this object. Where both low- and high-ionization emission lines have good enough statistics, we find larger upper limits for the hot gas, which is partly due to the different spatial extents of the hot and cool gas phases. Our upper limits are larger than the Mach numbers required to balance cooling, suggesting that dissipation of turbulence may prevent cooling, although other heating processes could be dominant. The systematics associated with the spatial profile of the source continuum make this technique very challenging, though still powerful, for current instruments. Using the EPIC and RGS data from a deep (~200 ks) XMM-Newton observation, we investigate the temperature structure (kT and sigma_T ) and the abundances of 9 elements (O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe and Ni) of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) in the nearby (z=0.046) cool-core galaxy cluster Abell 4059. Next to a deep analysis of the cluster core, a careful modelling of the EPIC background allows us to build radial profiles up to 12' (~650 kpc) from the core. Probably because of projection effects, the temperature ICM is found not to be in single phase, even in the outer parts of the cluster. The abundances of Ne, Si, S, Ar, Ca and Fe, but also O are peaked towards the core. Fe and O are still significantly detected in the outermost annuli; suggesting that the enrichment by both type Ia and core-collapse SNe started in the early stages of the cluster formation. However, the particularly high Ca/Fe ratio that we find in the core is not well reproduced by the standard SNe yield models. Finally, 2-D maps of temperature and Fe abundance are presented and confirm the existence of a denser, colder, and Fe-rich ridge southwest of the core, previously observed by Chandra. The origin of this asymmetry in the hot gas of the cluster core is still unclear, but might be explained by a past intense ram-pressure stripping event near the central cD galaxy., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

In the cores of ellipticals, clusters, and groups of galaxies, the gas has a cooling time shorter than 1 Gyr. It is possible to probe cooling flows through the detection of Fe XVII and O VII emission lines, but so far O VII has not been detected in any individual object. The Reflection Grating Spectrometers (RGS) aboard XMM-Newton are currently the only instruments able to detect O VII in extended objects such as elliptical galaxies and galaxy clusters. We searched for evidence of O VII through all the archival RGS observations of galaxy clusters, groups of galaxies, and elliptical galaxies focusing on those with core temperatures below 1 keV. We have discovered O VII resonance (21.6A) and forbidden (22.1A) lines for the first time in the spectra of individual objects. O VII was detected at a level higher than three sigma in six elliptical galaxies: M 84, M 86, M 89, NGC 1316, NGC 4636, and NGC 5846. M 84, M 86 and M 89 are members of the Virgo Cluster, the others are central dominant galaxies of groups, and most them show evidence of O VI in UV spectra. We detect no significant trend between the Fe XVII and O VII resonance-to-forbidden line ratios, possibly because of the limited statistics. The observed line ratios = (0.52+/-0.02, 0.9+/-0.2) indicate that the spectra of all these ellipticals are affected by resonance scattering, suggesting low turbulence. Deeper exposures will help to understand whether the Fe XVII and O VII lines are both produced by the same cooling gas or by multiphase gas. Our O VII luminosities correspond to 0.2-2 Msun/yr, which agree with the predictions for ellipticals. Such weak cooling rates would not be detected in clusters because their spectra are dominated by the emission of hotter gas, and owing to their greater distance, the expected O VII line flux would be undetectable., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) are a natural workbench to study accretion disk phenomena and optimal background sources to measure elemental abundances in the Interstellar medium (ISM). In high-resolution XMM-Newton spectra, the LMXB SAX J1808.4-3658 showed in the past a neon column density significantly higher than expected given its small distance, presumably due to additional absorption from a neon-rich circumstellar medium (CSM). It is possible to detect intrinsic absorption from the CSM by evidence of Keplerian motions or outflows. For this purpose, we use a recent, deep (100 ks long), high-resolution Chandra/LETGS spectrum of SAX J1808.4-3658 in combination with archival data. We estimated the column densities of the different absorbers through the study of their absorption lines. We used both empirical and physical models involving photo- and collisional-ionization in order to determine the nature of the absorbers. The abundances of the cold interstellar gas match the solar values as expected given the proximity of the X-ray source. For the first time in this source, we detected neon and oxygen blueshifted absorption lines that can be well modeled with outflowing photoionized gas. The wind is neon rich (Ne/O>3) and may originate from processed, ionized gas near the accretion disk or its corona. The kinematics (v=500-1000 km/s) are indeed similar to those seen in other accretion disks. We also discovered a system of emission lines with very high Doppler velocities (v~24000 km/s) originating presumably closer to the compact object. The X-ray flux of Nova V2491 Cyg reached a maximum some forty days after optical maximum. The X-ray spectrum at that time, obtained with the RGS of XMM-Newton, shows deep, blue-shifted absorption by ions of a wide range of ionization. We show that the deep absorption lines of the X-ray spectrum at maximum, and nine days later, are well described by the following phenomenological model with emission from a central blackbody and from a collisionally ionized plasma (CIE). The blackbody spectrum (BB) is absorbed by three main highly-ionized expanding shells; the CIE and BB are absorbed by cold circumstellar and interstellar matter that includes dust. The outflow density does not decrease monotonically with distance. The abundances of the shells indicate that they were ejected from an O-Ne white dwarf. We show that the variations on time scales of hours in the X-ray spectrum are caused by a combination of variation in the central source and in the column density of the ionized shells. Our phenomenological model gives the best description so far of the supersoft X-ray spectrum of nova V2491 Cyg, but underpredicts, by a large factor, the optical and ultraviolet flux. The X-ray part of the spectrum must originate from a very different layer in the expanding envelope, presumably much closer to the white dwarf than the layers responsible for the optical/ultraviolet spectrum. This is confirmed by absence of any correlation between the X-ray and UV/optical observed fluxes., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We present the analysis of XMM-Newton and Swift optical-UV and X-ray observations of the Seyfert-1/QSO Mrk 509, part of an unprecedented multi-wavelength campaign, investigating the nuclear environment of this AGN. The XMM-Newton data are from a series of 10 observations of about 60 ks each, spaced from each other by about 4 days, taken in Oct-Nov 2009. During our campaign, Mrk 509 was also observed with Swift for a period of about 100 days, monitoring the behaviour of the source before and after the XMM-Newton observations. With these data we have established the continuum spectrum in the optical-UV and X-ray bands and investigated its variability on the timescale of our campaign with a resolution time of a few days. In order to measure and model the continuum as far as possible into the UV, we also made use of HST/COS observations of Mrk 509 (part of our coordinated campaign) and of an archival FUSE observation. We have found that in addition to an X-ray power-law, the spectrum displays soft X-ray excess emission below 2 keV, which interestingly varies in association with the thermal optical-UV emission from the accretion disc. The change in the X-ray power-law component flux (albeit smaller than that of the soft excess), on the other hand, is uncorrelated to the flux variability of the soft X-ray excess and the disc component on the probed timescale. The results of our simultaneous broad-band spectral and timing analysis suggest that, on a resolution time of a few days, the soft X-ray excess of Mrk 509 is produced by the Comptonisation of the thermal optical-UV photons from the accretion disc by a warm (0.2 keV) optically thick (tau ~ 17) corona surrounding the inner regions of the disc. This makes Mrk 509, with a black hole mass of about 1-3 x 10^8 solar masses, the highest mass known system to display such behaviour and origin for the soft X-ray excess., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, 6 tables. We examine the variability in the intrinsic absorption in the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 279 using three epochs of observations from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) and two epochs of observations with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. Rather than finding simple photoionization responses of the absorbing gas to changes in the underlying continuum, the observed changes in the absorption profiles can be understood more clearly if the effective covering fraction of the gas in all emission components, continuum and broad and intermediate velocity width emission lines, is accounted for. While we do not uniquely solve for all of these separate covering fractions and the ionic column densities using the spectral data, we examine the parameter space using previously well-constrained solutions for continuum and single emission component covering fractions. Assuming full coverage of the continuum, we find that of the two velocity components of the Mrk 279 absorption most likely associated with its outflow, one likely has zero coverage of the intermediate line region while the other does not. For each component, however, the broad line region is more fully covered than the intermediate line region. Changes in the O VI column densities are unconstrained due to saturation, but we show that small changes in the nonsaturated C IV and N V column densities are consistent with the outflow gas having zero or partial covering of the intermediate line region and an ionization parameter changing from ~0.01 to ~0.1 from 2002 to 2003 as the UV continuum flux increased by a factor of ~8. The absence of a change in the C III absorbing column density is attributed to this species arising outside the Mrk 279 outflow., Comment: 36 pages, 18 figures, accepted to ApJ

We present the first reliable determination of chemical abundances in an AGN outflow. The abundances are extracted from the deep and simultaneous FUSE and HST/STIS observations of Mrk 279. This data set is exceptional for its high signal-to-noise, unblended doublet troughs and little Galactic absorption contamination. These attributes allow us to solve for the velocity-dependent covering fraction, and therefore obtain reliable column densities for many ionic species. For the first time we have enough such column densities to simultaneously determine the ionization equilibrium and abundances in the flow. Our analysis uses the full spectral information embedded in these high-resolution data. Slicing a given trough into many independent outflow elements yields the extra constraints needed for a physically meaningful abundances determination. We find that relative to solar the abundances in the Mrk 279 outflow are (linear scaling): carbon 2.2+/-0.7, nitrogen 3.5+/-1.1 and oxygen 1.6+/-0.8. Our UV-based photoionization and abundances results are in good agreement with the independent analysis of the simultaneous Mrk 279 X-ray spectra. We present low-resolution ultraviolet spectra of 14 low redshift (z<0.8) quasars observed with HST/STIS as part of a Snap project to understand the relationship between quasar outflows and luminosity. By design, all observations cover the CIV emission line. Nine of the quasars are from the Hamburg-ESO catalog, three are from the Palomar-Green catalog, and one is from the Parkes catalog. The sample contains a few interesting quasars including two broad absorption line (BAL) quasars (HE0143-3535, HE0436-2614), one quasar with a mini-BAL (HE1105-0746), and one quasar with associated narrow absorption (HE0409-5004). These BAL quasars are among the brightest known (though not the most luminous) since they lie at z<0.8. We compare the properties of these BAL quasars to the z<0.5 Palomar-Green and z>1.4 Large Bright Quasar samples. By design, our objects sample luminosities in between these two surveys, and our four absorbed objects are consistent with the v ~ L^0.62 relation derived by Laor & Brandt (2002). Another quasar, HE0441-2826, contains extremely weak emission lines and our spectrum is consistent with a simple power-law continuum. The quasar is radio-loud, but has a steep spectral index and a lobe-dominated morphology, which argues against it being a blazar. The unusual spectrum of this quasar resembles the spectra of the quasars PG1407+265, SDSSJ1136+0242, and PKS1004+13 for which several possible explanations have been entertained., Comment: Uses aastex.cls, 21 pages in preprint mode, including 6 figures and 2 tables; accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal (projected vol 133)

We present an analysis of the intrinsic UV absorption in the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 279 based on simultaneous long observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (41 ks) and the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (91 ks). To extract the line-of-sight covering factors and ionic column densities, we separately fit two groups of absorption lines: the Lyman series and the CNO lithium-like doublets. For the CNO doublets we assume that all three ions share the same covering factors. The fitting method applied here overcomes some limitations of the traditional method using individual doublet pairs; it allows for the treatment of more complex, physically realistic scenarios for the absorption-emission geometry and eliminates systematic errors that we show are introduced by spectral noise. We derive velocity-dependent solutions based on two models of geometrical covering -- a single covering factor for all background emission sources, and separate covering factors for the continuum and emission lines. Although both models give good statistical fits to the observed absorption, we favor the model with two covering factors because: (a) the best-fit covering factors for both emission sources are similar for the independent Lyman series and CNO doublet fits; (b) the fits are consistent with full coverage of the continuum source and partial coverage of the emission lines by the absorbers, as expected from the relative sizes of the nuclear emission components; and (c) it provides a natural explanation for variability in the Ly$\alpha$ absorption detected in an earlier epoch. We present XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer observations of X-ray clusters and groups of galaxies. We demonstrate the failure of the standard cooling-flow model to describe the soft X-ray spectrum of clusters of galaxies. We also emphasize several new developments in the study of the soft X-ray spectrum of cooling flows. Although there is some uncertainty in the expected mass deposition rate for any individual cluster, we show that high resolution RGS spectra robustly demonstrate that the expected line emission from the isobaric cooling-flow model is absent below 1/3 of the background temperature rather than below a fixed temperature in all clusters. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the best-resolved cluster spectra are inconsistent with the predicted shape of the differential luminosity distribution and the measured distribution is tilted to higher temperatures. These observations create several fine-tuning challenges for current theoretical explanations for the soft X-ray cooling-flow problem. A long 280 ks observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783 with XMM-Newton is reported. We focus on the oxygen line complex between 17 and 24 A as measured with the RGS spectrometers. Accurate absorption column densities and emission line fluxes are obtained. We explore several options for the geometry and physical form of the emitting and absorbing gas. The lack of change in ionization in the absorber despite an increase in continuum flux during the observation restricts the high-ionization (O-K) and the low-ionization (Fe-M) gas to distances of at least 0.5 pc and 2.8 pc, respectively, away from the central source. Given the P-Cygni type profiles in the resonance spectral lines and the similar velocity widths, column densities, and ionization structure inferred separately from the emission and absorption lines, it is tempting to relate the X-ray narrow-line emitting plasma with the X-ray absorbing gas. Under this assumption, the scenario of dense clumped clouds can be ruled out. Conversely, extended ionization cones (r > 10 pc) are consistent with the observation independent of this assumption. These findings are in stark contrast with the picture of numerous clumpy (n_e > 10^9 cm^-3) clouds drawn recently from UV spectra, but it is consistent with the extended X-ray emission cones observed directly in Seyfert 2 galaxies., Comment: To be published in ApJ

We report on the observation of OVII Doppler line broadening in a compact knot at the edge of SN 1006 detected with the Reflective Grating Spectrometer on board XMM-Newton. The observed line width of sigma = 3.4+/-0.5 eV at a line energy of 574 eV indicates an oxygen temperature of kT = 528+/-150 keV. Combined with the observed electron temperature of 1.5 keV the observed broadening is direct evidence for temperature non-equilibration in high Mach number shocks, and slow subsequent equilibration. The OVII line emission allows an accurate determination of the ionization state of the plasma, which is characterized by a relatively high forbidden line contribution, indicating log(n_e t) ~ 9.2., Comment: Accepted by Astrophysical Journal Letters, 4 pages, 4 figures. Ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) are outstanding due to their huge luminosity output in the infrared, which is predominantly powered by super starbursts and/or hidden active galactic nuclei (AGN). NGC 6240 is one of the nearest ULIRGs and is considered a key representative of its class. Here, we report the first high-resolution imaging spectroscopy of NGC 6240 in X-rays. The observation, performed with the ACIS-S detector aboard the Chandra X-ray observatory, led to the discovery of two hard nuclei, coincident with the optical-IR nuclei of NGC 6240. The AGN character of both nuclei is revealed by the detection of absorbed hard, luminous X-ray emission and two strong neutral Fe_K_alpha lines. In addition, extended X-ray emission components are present, changing their rich structure in dependence of energy. High resolution spectroscopic observations of Seyfert galaxies with Chandra and XMM-Newton allows us to study the detailed ionization and thermal structures of the X-ray absorbing/emitting material in the circumnuclear environment. The vast improvement in the spectral resolving power by more than an order of magnitude enables us, for the first time, to unambiguously distinguish the dominant line emission mechanisms and to measure its dynamical properties as well. The X-ray band harbors spectral transitions from a wide range of ionization states, including valence-shell transitions in K-shell and L-shell ions from most cosmically abundant elements, as well as inner-shell transitions of iron and other mid-Z elements, which can be probed through absorption measurements. The X-ray spectrum, therefore, provides simultaneous velocity and column density constraints of highly ionized to only slightly ionized gas harbored in many of these systems. We summarize recent results that have emerged from observations of Seyfert 2 galaxies with the grating spectrometers onboard Chandra and XMM-Newton. We give particular emphasis to an empirical physical model that we have developed based on the observed spectra, and how it can be used for comparative studies with Seyfert 1 galaxies to test the AGN unification scenarios., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. In a recent Letter, Berghoefer & Bowyer rediscussed the analysis of BeppoSAX LECS data of the cluster of galaxies Abell 2199 as presented by Kaastra et al., in particular the detection of a soft X-ray excess. Berghoefer & Bowyer stated that their analysis method is better suited and does not show evidence for a soft X-ray excess. Here we find it necessary to publish a rebuttal, because it can be demonstrated that the method used by Berghoefer & Bowyer is oversimplified, leading to an erroneous result. As a consequence, their statement that our initial analysis is incorrect is invalid and the detection of a soft X-ray excess in A 2199 is still confirmed., Comment: 6 pages, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal, Letters

We report on the discovery of an unresolved X-ray source inside the supernova remnant G315.4-2.3 (RCW 86). The source is located 7' to the Southwest of the geometrical centre and may be close to the actual explosion centre of the supernova, which makes this a candidate for the stellar remnant associated with RCW 86. However, the presence of a possible optical counterpart with $V \sim 14$ at 3" from the X-ray position and evidence for long term variability means that the source is probably an active star. A better X-ray position and better X-ray spectroscopy along with an identification of the optical source are needed to exclude the X-ray source as a neutron star candidate., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. We present BeppoSAX X-ray spectra of the remnant of the supernova of AD 1006, which cover a broad spectral range of 0.1-10 keV. In our analysis we concentrate on the thermal emission from the central region of the remnant. For this purpose we fitted the spectra of the whole remnant using a new version of the spectral program SPEX, which takes into account the interdependence of spectra of different regions as the result of the point spread function of the instruments. This is in particular important for separating the synchrotron emission, coming from the bright rims of the remnant, from the thermal emission from the central regions. The thermal emission appears best fitted with a combination of two spectral components with electron temperatures of about 0.7 keV and more than 3 keV. The plasma in SN 1006 appears to be very far out of ionization equilibrium (nt = 2 10^15 m^-3 s), which means that the L-shell emission of magnesium, silicon and sulphur contribute significantly to the flux below 0.5 keV. We also note the presence of Fe K line emission at 6.3+/-0.2 keV, in agreement with an origin from inner shell ionizations and excitations. We confirm that the abundances in SN 1006 are clearly non-solar. In particular silicon is very abundant.
