Abstract

As the generated electric power is not enough for the demand of Bangladesh, ocean wave energy can provide a suitable low cost and permanent solution. A promising new technology in this field is a specific wave energy generator which has recently started operation in Europe. The device floats on the ocean water and extracts energy from the waves which causes a relative motion in different parts of the structure. The plant proposed is able to produce 30MW electrical power with an establishment cost of 4 million USD, no fuel cost and very little maintenance cost. Considering the tidal wave height, duration, water depth, cost and durability, Bay of Bengal has good prospect for large scale production of electricity using this type of generator. The present shortage of 1500MW power in Bangladesh can be supplied using the proposed plant utilizing only 50 square kilometre area offshore. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

In this paper life cycle assessment of stand-alone solar PV power systems is studied to test their feasibility in regions of Bangladesh which do not have access to grid electricity. Economic performance of renewable power sources and non-renewable fossil fuel supplied generators is investigated and compared in terms of net present value analysis. The analysis suggest that solar PV systems are better both economically and environmentally from the context of a developing country like Bangladesh. Moreover, the results establish the finding that the choice between renewable or traditional power sources from an economic point of view depends on the load demand of the customers and the power rating of the generators. Abstract

In this paper, Life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) is employed to investigate the effect of economic factors like inflation, subsidizing and fuel price on 100Wp solar photovoltaic systems and conventional petrol and diesel generators (2–5kW) available in Bangladesh. Results show that Solar PV based home systems are economically lucrative as an energy sources compared to fossil fuel based power supplies under specific load ranges and generator ratings and the economic criteria also include market conditions which may fluctuate depending on government policies. This paper establishes the load ranges which would determine the viability of the renewable and fuel driven power sources considering pragmatic ratings of diesel and petrol generators available in the local market. Effect of escalation of price and discounting are also analyzed over the lifetime of power supply projects to verify their true commercial worth. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
