The atypical congenital pathway of the internal carotid artery (ICA) is an uncommon anatomical variation with a very low prevalence. The medialization of the internal carotid artery is regarded as an infrequent manifestation. The internal carotid artery may be displaced at the level of the pharyngeal wall, leading to the enlargement of connective tissue in the lateral pharynx and retropharyngeal areas. A 76-year-old male patient with a history of weakness on the left side of his body, difficulty swallowing, and speech difficulties was sent to the otorhinolaryngology department because of pain in his throat. He underwent several unsuccessful attempts at the insertion of a nasogastric tube (NGT), which was eventually done with considerable difficulty. Upon evaluation, the individual displayed regular speech and a strength rating of 4/5 in both of his left limbs. Upon examination of the throat, a significant non-pulsating edema was observed in the right retropharyngeal area, pushing the right tonsil anteromedially. A posterior pharyngeal mass was observed during fiberoptic laryngoscopy. The Doppler examination of the carotid arteries yielded definitive results. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) showed the common carotid arteries via a retropharyngeal route. It is clinically significant to identify variations in the course of the internal carotid artery, particularly those located near the submucosal area of the pharynx. Background: Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) specialists treat patients of different ages, ranging from elderly patients with head and neck tumors to neonates with respiratory problems. No studies have been conducted to explore the factors that affect the preference for ORL among Umm Al-Qura University students. We aimed to investigate factors and motivators influencing medical students at Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, who choose to pursue a career in ORL-head and neck surgery., Methods and Materials: This cross-sectional study was conducted over two months in 2023 among 439 students in the pre-clinical, clinical, and internship years of the Faculty of Medicine at Umm Al-Qura University, Saudi Arabia. We shared a Google Forms questionnaire (Google, Inc., Mountain View, CA) and explored factors associated with interest in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) as a future specialty. We used Pearson's chi-square test to arrive at the results., Results: A total of 339 (77.2%) participants were female. Participants were evenly divided between pre-clinical years (213 (48.5%)) and clinical years (207 (47.2%)), with a smaller percentage in the internship category (19 (4.3%)). ORL involvement was reported in 159 (36.2%) of the participants., Conclusion: The surgical specialty of ORL focuses mostly on conditions affecting the head, neck, nose, and ears. Background: Epistaxis is a common medical problem requiring first aid. However, public awareness of proper first-aid techniques for epistaxis is limited. This study assessed the knowledge and attitudes toward first-aid epistaxis management among the general population in the Makkah region., Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 1,259 participants from various regions in Makkah. The survey assessed participants' epidemiological information, experience with epistaxis, and knowledge of proper first-aid techniques. The knowledge scores were calculated and categorized as either good or poor. Associations between the variables and predictors of good knowledge were analyzed., Result: Overall knowledge of proper epistaxis first aid was poor, with only 467 (37.1%) demonstrating good knowledge. Women, healthcare workers, and those with prior epistaxis showed higher odds of having good knowledge than their counterparts. Relatives/friends and social media were cited as the main knowledge sources, rather than healthcare providers., Conclusion: Public awareness of appropriate first-aid epistaxis techniques in Makkah is inadequate. Objectives Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is the persistent inflammation of the mucosal lining of the paranasal sinuses (PNS). By definition, the inflammatory process persists beyond 12 weeks. One of its subtypes is allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS), which has a high risk of recurrence, leading to revision surgery. This study aimed to establish the predictive factors for the recurrence of AFRS in post-sinus surgery patients. Methods This single-center retrospective study was conducted in Al-Noor Specialist Hospital, Makkah, Saudi Arabia. The charts of patients with AFRS who underwent surgery in our rhinology clinic between 2000 and 2020 were reviewed. Results Among the 116 patients included in this study, approximately half (53%) were female, with a median age of 24.5 years. Thirty-nine (33.6%) patients had recurrence post-sinus surgery, with 33.3% occurring within six months of follow-up. The results showed that patients with coexisting bronchial asthma were three times more likely to experience recurrence (adjusted odds ratio {AOR}, 3.43; confidence interval {CI}, 1.35-8.71), patients with uncorrected deviated nasal septum (DNS) were three times more likely to experience symptoms again following surgery (AOR, 3.70; CI, 1.14-12.02), and patients who presented with concomitant sinus headaches are 66% less likely to experience recurrence (AOR, 0.34; CI, 0.13-0.86). Conclusion The results showed that 33.62% of patients experienced recurrence following surgery. Background Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) illnesses commonly affect all individuals with a broad range of symptoms, and most causes are preventable. According to the WHO, more than 278 million people have bilateral hearing loss. Locally, a previously published study done in Riyadh showed that most participants (79.4%) had a poor level of knowledge on common ENT-related diseases. The current study aims to investigate and explore the knowledge of and attitudes toward common ENT problems among students in Makkah City, Saudi Arabia. Method This descriptive, cross-sectional study used an Arabic-language electronic questionnaire to assess knowledge of common ENT problems. It was distributed to medical students at Umm Al-Qura University and students attending Makkah City high schools in Saudi Arabia between November 2021 and October 2022. The sample size was calculated to be 385 participants. Results Overall 1080 respondents were enrolled in this survey from Makkah City. Participants with good knowledge of common ENT diseases were over 20 years of age with a p-value <0.001. Furthermore, females also had a significant p-value of <0.004, and those with bachelor's or university degrees showed a statistically significant p-value of <0.001. Conclusion Female participants with bachelor's or university degrees and participants aged 20 and older showed superior knowledge. Introduction Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is one of the most common avoidable reasons for hearing impairment worldwide. Work-related, genetic, infectious, and environmental factors all have a part in defining the level of hearing impairment. Nevertheless, the use of personal listening devices (PLDs) is popular nowadays, particularly among younger people. Healthy behaviors are needed to prevent them from developing hearing loss. Our objective is to evaluate the knowledge level of NIHL among the people of Makkah, Saudi Arabia, and understand its association with PLDs. Methods A cross-sectional survey was performed in December 2022 by sending an online survey on various social media applications. An electronic Arabic questionnaire with a total of 37 questions was designed to explore the participants' demographic data, history of hearing loss, risk factors, attitudes, and awareness of NIHL. Results Almost 22% of the study had mild-to-severe hearing impairment. Hearing issues were especially common among male individuals. A higher incidence of hearing impairments was seen in individuals who were utilizing a sound degree of more than 80%. The causes for NIHL comprised exposure to occupational noise, duration of the listening session per day, and the level to which the sound of the television or the broadcasting was raised. Approximately 77% of the participants preferred to reduce the sound of their personal audio devices (PADs) to prevent NIHL. Conclusion According to this study, there is a high prevalence of hearing problems in the Saudi population. Most of the respondents understood the risk factors linked to NIHL. Background Allergic rhinitis (AR) is considered a high global disease burden; hence, the shortage of knowledge would lead to poor adherence to management and preventive measures and increase the exacerbation of AR symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors, and assess the knowledge and practices of the population regarding AR among the population in Makkah city, Saudi Arabia. Methodology This was an online survey cross-sectional study conducted in December 2022 via social media platforms (WhatsApp and Twitter) to collect data on participants' demographics, prevalence, risk factors, knowledge, and attitudes toward AR, using a validated Arabic version of a self-administered questionnaire. Results The study involved 466 participants. Of the participants, 55.8% were aged 31 to 45 years, and 286 (61.4%) were females. The prevalence of AR among the participants was 45%. The most common symptoms were a blocked nose (79.6%), sneezing (74.2%), and a runny nose (71.5%). Furthermore, the prevalence of rhinoconjunctivitis in this study was 56%. The most common inhalant allergen was house dust (73.0%). Only the age and history of asthma or eczema were significant factors associated with AR. Overall, most of the subjects (94.85%) had adequate knowledge regarding AR. Conclusion A high prevalence of AR was observed. Bacterial cell division is a complex, dynamic process that requires multiple protein components to orchestrate its progression. Many division proteins are highly conserved across bacterial species alluding to a common, basic mechanism. Central to division is a transmembrane trimeric complex involving DivIB, DivIC and FtsL in Gram-positives. Here, we show a distinct, essential role for DivIC in division and survival of Staphylococcus aureus. DivIC spatially regulates peptidoglycan synthesis, and consequently cell wall architecture, by influencing the recruitment to the division septum of the major peptidoglycan synthetases PBP2 and FtsW. Both the function of DivIC and its recruitment to the division site depend on its extracellular domain, which interacts with the cell wall via binding to wall teichoic acids. DivIC facilitates the spatial and temporal coordination of peptidoglycan synthesis with the developing architecture of the septum during cell division. A better understanding of the cell division mechanisms in S. aureus and other pathogenic microorganisms can provide possibilities for the development of new, more effective treatments for bacterial infections., (© 2022. Background Cancer is an ongoing global health concern; it is the greatest cause of mortality in the industrialized world and the second-highest cause of death in the developing world. This study aims to assess the incidence and geographic distribution of nasopharyngeal cancer between 2007 and 2016 in Saudi Arabia. Methods Data between 2007 and 2016 from Saudi Cancer Registry reports were collected in this study. These reports provide information on all cancer cases, including the age, sex, geographic location, and year of diagnosis for each patient. Result Between 2007 and 2016, the Saudi Cancer Registry identified 110,075 cancer cases in total. The mean age-standardized rate of all cancer types for women was 51.7 compared with 48.2 for men. The percentage of cases of nasopharyngeal cancers was 1.2% for women and 2.2% for men in 2007. This percentage decreased to 0.8% for women and increased to 2.7% for men in 2016 in comparison to all cancer cases. The curve for nasopharyngeal cancer of all cancer types for men and women correlated with rises and drops in men over the study period, and a minor decrease in women over time, until another rise in 2016. A positive correlation was observed between nasopharyngeal cancer incidence and age. The age-standardized rate data for nasopharyngeal cancer cases demonstrated a wide variation across Saudi regions. The age-standardized rate per 100,000 people from 2007 to 2016 ranged from 0.39 in Jazan to 1.92 in Qassim, with a national average of 1.06. Conclusion From 2007 to 2016, the overall trend of the age-standardized rate for men fluctuated while the female rate slightly dropped before rising again. On the contrary, the incidence of nasopharyngeal cancer varies by region in Saudi Arabia. Genome segregation is a vital process in all organisms. Chromosome partitioning remains obscure in Archaea, the third domain of life. Here, we investigated the SegAB system from Sulfolobus solfataricus. SegA is a ParA Walker-type ATPase and SegB is a site-specific DNA-binding protein. We determined the structures of both proteins and those of SegA-DNA and SegB-DNA complexes. The SegA structure revealed an atypical, novel non-sandwich dimer that binds DNA either in the presence or in the absence of ATP. The SegB structure disclosed a ribbon-helix-helix motif through which the protein binds DNA site specifically. The association of multiple interacting SegB dimers with the DNA results in a higher order chromatin-like structure. The unstructured SegB N-terminus plays an essential catalytic role in stimulating SegA ATPase activity and an architectural regulatory role in segrosome (SegA-SegB-DNA) formation. Electron microscopy results also provide a compact ring-like segrosome structure related to chromosome organization. Bacterial cell division is a fundamental process that requires the coordinated actions of a number of proteins which form a complex macromolecular machine known as the divisome. The membrane-spanning proteins DivIB and its orthologue FtsQ are crucial divisome components in Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria respectively. However, the role of almost all of the integral division proteins, including DivIB, still remains largely unknown. Here we show that the extracellular domain of DivIB is able to bind peptidoglycan and have mapped the binding to its β subdomain. Conditional mutational studies show that divIB is essential for Staphylococcus aureus growth, while phenotypic analyses following depletion of DivIB results in a block in the completion, but not initiation, of septum formation. Localisation studies suggest that DivIB only transiently localises to the division site and may mark previous sites of septation. We propose that DivIB is required for a molecular checkpoint during division to ensure the correct assembly of the divisome at midcell and to prevent hydrolytic growth of the cell in the absence of a completed septum., (© 2014 The Authors.
