In this manuscript, we study solutions to resonant Maxwell's equations in heterogeneous plasmas. We concentrate on the phenomenon of upper-hybrid heating, which occurs in a localized region where electromagnetic waves transfer energy to the particles. In the 2D case, it can be modelled mathematically by the partial differential equation − div (α∇u) − ω 2 u = 0, where the coefficient α is a smooth, sign-changing, real-valued function. Since the locus of the sign change is located within the plasma, the equation is non-elliptic, and degenerate. On the other hand, using the limiting absorption principle, one can build a family of elliptic equations that approximate the degenerate equation. Then, a natural question is to relate the solution of the degenerate equation, if it exists, to the family of solutions of the elliptic equations. For that, we assume that the family of solutions converges to a limit, which can be split into a regular part and a singular part, and that this limiting absorption solution is governed by the non-elliptic equation introduced above. One of the difficulties lies in the definition of appropriate norms and function spaces in order to be able to study the non-elliptic equation and its solutions. As a starting point, we revisit a prior work [13] on this topic by A. Nicolopoulos, M. Campos Pinto, B. Després and P. Ciarlet Jr., who proposed a variational formulation for the plasma heating problem. We improve the results they obtained, in particular by establishing existence and uniqueness of the solution, by making a different choice of function spaces. Also, we propose a series a numerical tests, comparing the numerical results of Nicolopoulos et al to those obtained with our numerical method, for which we observe better convergence.

In this work we study time-domain sound-soft scattering by small circles. Our goal is to derive an asymptotic model for this problem valid when the size of the particles tends to zero. We present a systematic approach to constructing such models, based on a well-chosen Galerkin discretization of a boundary integral equation. The convergence of the method is achieved by decreasing the asymptotic parameter rather than increasing the number of basis functions. For the case of circular obstacles, we prove the second-order convergence of the field error with respect to the particle size. Our findings are illustrated with numerical experiments.

This work is dedicated to the analysis of generalized perfectly matched layers (PMLs) for 2D electromagnetic wave propagation in dispersive waveguides. Under quite general assumptions on frequency-dependent dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability we prove convergence estimates in homogeneous waveguides and show that the PML error decreases exponentially with respect to the absorption parameter and the length of the absorbing layer. The optimality of this error estimate is studied both numerically and analytically. Finally, we demonstrate that in the case when the waveguide contains a heterogeneity supported away from the absorbing layer, instabilities may occur, even in the case of the non-dispersive media. Our findings are illustrated by numerical experiments.

International audience; This work deals with the stability of Perfectly Matched Layers (PMLs). The first part is a survey of previous results about the classical PMLs in non-dispersive media (construction and necessary condition of stability). The second part concerns some extensions of these results. We give a new necessary criterion of stability valid for a large class of dispersive models and for more general PMLs than the classical ones. This criterion is applied to two dispersive models: negative index metamaterials and uniaxial anisotropic plasmas. In both cases, classical PMLs are unstable but the criterion allows us to design new stable PMLs. Numerical simulations illustrate our purpose.; Ce travail porte sur la stabilité des Couches Absorbantes Parfaitement Adaptées (Perfectly Matched Layers, PMLs). La première partie est un récapitulatif de résultats antérieurs pour les milieux non dispersifs (construction et condition nécessaire de stabilité). La seconde partie concerne quelques extensions de ces résultats. Nous donnons un nouveau critère nécessaire de stabilité valable pour une grande classe de modèles dispersifs et pour des PMLs plus générales que celles classiques. Ce critère est appliqué à deux modèles dispersifs : les métamatériaux à indice négatif et les plasmas anistropiques uniaxiaux. Dans les deux cas, les PMLs classiques sont instables mais le critère nous permet de concevoir de nouvelles PMLs stables. Des simulations numériques illustrent notre propos.

This work addresses the question of the efficient numerical solution of time-domain boundary integral equations with retarded potentials arising in the problems of acoustic and electromagnetic scattering. The convolutional form of the time-domain boundary operators allows to discretize them with the help of Runge-Kutta convolution quadrature. This method combines Laplace-transform and time-stepping approaches and requires the explicit form of the fundamental solution only in the Laplace domain to be known. Recent numerical and analytical studies revealed excellent properties of Runge-Kutta convolution quadrature, e.g. high convergence order, stability, low dissipation and dispersion. As a model problem, we consider the wave scattering in three dimensions. The convolution quadrature discretization of the indirect formulation for the three-dimensional wave equation leads to the lower triangular Toeplitz system of equations. Each entry of this system is a boundary integral operator with a kernel defined by convolution quadrature. In this work we develop an efficient method of almost linear complexity for the solution of this system based on the existing recursive algorithm. The latter requires the construction of many discretizations of the Helmholtz boundary single layer operator for a wide range of complex wavenumbers. This leads to two main problems: the need to construct many dense matrices and to evaluate many singular and near-singular integrals. The first problem is overcome by the use of data-sparse techniques, namely, the high-frequency fast multipole method (HF FMM) and H-matrices. The applicability of both techniques for the discretization of the Helmholtz boundary single-layer operators with complex wavenumbers is analyzed. It is shown that the presence of decay can favorably affect the length of the fast multipole expansions and thus reduce the matrix-vector multiplication times. The performance of H-matrices and the HF FMM is compared for a range of complex wavenumbers, and the strategy to choose between two techniques is suggested. The second problem, namely, the assembly of many singular and nearly-singular integrals, is solved by the use of the Huygens principle. In this work we prove that kernels of the boundary integral operators $w_n^h(d)$ ($h$ is the time step and $t_n=nh$ is the time) exhibit exponential decay outside of the neighborhood of $d=nh$ (this is the consequence of the Huygens principle). In this work we propose high-order transparent boundary conditions for the weighted wave equation on a fractal tree, with an application to the modeling of sound propagation in a human lung. This article follows the recent work (Joly et al. in Netw Heterog Media 14(2):205–264, 2019), dedicated to the mathematical analysis of the corresponding problem and the construction of low-order absorbing boundary conditions. The method proposed in this article consists in constructing the exact (transparent) boundary conditions for the semi-discretized problem, in the spirit of the convolution quadrature method developed by Ch. Lubich. We analyze the stability and convergence of the method, and propose an efficient algorithm for its implementation. The exposition is concluded with numerical experiments.

We obtain explicit energy estimates for the PML system in the time domain, by making use of the ideas stemming from the analysis of the associated sesquilinear form in the Laplace domain. This analysis is based on the introduction of a particular set of auxiliary unknowns related to the PML, which simplifies the derivation of the energy estimates for the resulting system. For 2D dispersive systems, our analysis allows to demonstrate the stability of the PML system for a constant absorption parameter. For 1D dispersive systems, we show the stability of the PMLs with a non-constant absorption parameter.
