A set of International Potato Center (CIP)-bred potato clones was evaluated for their salt tolerance and productivity in replicated field trials in three coastal districts of Bangladesh, namely, Chittagong, Patuakhali and Satkhira. In each year of experimentation from 2011 to 2015, salinity levels increased progressively during the season and varied with time and place. Evaluation and selection were carried out using GGE biplot analysis and mean yield across the test sites; and the best performing clones were selected for the next year’s trial. Of the original fifteen test clones, two (CIP 301029.18 and CIP 396311.1) were selected for evaluation in the regional yield trial with cvs. Diamant and Asterix as checks. In the regional yield trial, across locations, CIP 301029.18 was the highest (21.8 ton/ha) and CIP 396311.1 (21.3 ton/ha) was the 2nd highest yielder such that CIP 301029.18 produced 64.0% higher yield and CIP 396311.1 produced 32.4% higher yield compare to their corresponding check varieties Diamant and Asterix. Similar ranking was found under farmers’ field conditions. Finally, these 2 clones CIP 301029.18 & CIP 396311.1 were found promising for their good productivity under saline conditions and CIP 396311.1 was released by the National Seed Board in Bangladesh in 2016.

Bangladesh is in a subtropical monsoon region and extends from 20°34'N to 26°38'N latitude, its agriculture is comprised of several diversified rice-based cropping systems. Potato is an important winter crop across the country. To help increase the sustainability of potato production in Bangladesh, a set of medium-term late blight-resistant potato clones bred in CIP were evaluated for diversification potential at six locations from 2008 to 2013. After seven years of field trials, TCRC, BARI identified two clones, namely CIP 393371.58 (coded LB-6) and CIP 393280.64 (LB-7) which are consistently resistant to Late Blight under field conditions without fungicide and yield as well or better than the predominant commercial varieties (Diamant) in a 90-day cropping window. According to the AUDPC, LB-4, LB-5, LB-6 and LB-7 were moderate to highly resistant to Late Blight. The latter two produced over 30 tons of tubers per hectare. Similar yields were recorded in on-farm trials during 2011-12. These two clones were entered into regional yield trials as a requirement for variety release by the NSB. Based on field performance at on-station and farmers' fields, NSB released BARI Alu-46 (LB-7) in 2013 and BARI Alu-53 (LB-6) in 2014 as the country's two late blight-resistant varieties. A collaborative study was undertaken on eighteen micro-nutrient rich potato genotypes to evaluate their yield performance at Agriculture Research Station (ARS, Horticulture Farm) Rajikot as an on-station and at farmers' field of Patmara and Talium as on-farm in Jumla District of Nepal during 2013-2014. Mean marketable tuber weight/plot over on-station and on-farm trials in both the years was highest (9.2 kg) in clone CIP 395112.32 and total tuber number/plant was highest in Jumla Local (10.0) and Kufri Jyoti (9.0). The average marketable yield of on-station and on-farm experiments of two years recorded the highest in clone CIP 393073.179 (22.6 t/ha) and Kufri Jyoti (22.1 t/ha). CIP 395112.32 and CIP 394611.112 produced the average highest yield (21.9 and 20.4 t/ha, respectively). Participatory evaluation of organoleptic traits exhibited that tubers of CIP 393073.179, CIP 395112.32 and CIP 394611.112 had acceptable quality for appearance, taste and texture. This experiment was conducted to investigate the performance of advanced potato clones at high hills of Nepal during 2013-2014. Eight advanced potato clones were evaluated with locally adapted variety 'Lady Rosita' at Nigaley Farm of Sindhupalchowk and farmers' field of Dolakha, as an on-station and on-farm experiments, respectively. The plant morphological, late blight disease, and yield characters of potato clones were studied in the both years. CIP 393073.179 and CIP 395112.32 were found resistant to late blight disease in both years. Total tuber number/plant, and marketable yield (t/ha) were highly significant (P=0.01) among the clones. CIP 395112.32 produced the highest marketable tuber yield (18.5 t/ha) followed by CIP 393073.179 (16.5 t/ha) in on-station and on-farm trials in both years. Clone CIP 395112.32 possessed late blight resistance and better yield, and acceptable rank of tuber appearance, taste and texture as compared to other clones. CIP 395112.32 is recommended to scaleup for farmers in potato cultivation. The adoption of this clone as variety will increase the potato production and improve the food, and nutritional security in project targeted areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents an evaluation of advanced potato clones in arid zone in Rajasthan, India for drought tolerance. It mentions the perception of potato growers of heat and drought tolerant varieties as potent tool to tackle the impending threat of climate change and global warming. The efforts to breed and screen potato clones for adaptation to adverse agro-ecologies are also outlined.
