Abstract

This study investigated the potential for energy savings and reduction in CO2 emissions in hospital buildings in Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H), through the implementation of energy renovation measures. The building sector in B&H is characterized by significant energy consumption, and hospitals account for a substantial portion of the total energy consumption in public buildings. This study analyzes certain energy renovation measures for selected hospital buildings, including the installation of thermal insulation on exterior walls and flat roofs, and the installation of a photovoltaic plant on the flat roof. The Preference Selection Index (PSI) multicriteria decision-making method was employed to evaluate and rank renovation scenarios based on energy, environmental, and financial criteria. The results indicate that the most preferred measure is the installation of a photovoltaic plant on a flat roof, resulting in significant primary energy and CO2 savings, with an acceptable discounted payback period. The findings emphasize the effectiveness of energy renovation measures in enhancing energy efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of hospital buildings in B&H. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Energy saving potentials related to steam generation and its usage in the medium size bakery are analyzed and presented. Input data needed for the investigation are gathered through detailed energy audit. Four energy savings measures are analysed in detail: 1) change of heat generator for space heating and domestic hot water preparation from steam boiler to condensing boiler, 2) reduction of heat losses from steam and condensate distribution lines, 3) heat utilization of return condensate and 4) replacement of the old, low efficiency steam boiler with high-efficient one. Implementation of these measures will result in substantial reduction of energy costs, ranging from 2.900 to 26.200 € annually. Interaction of all measures is analysed through energy efficiency improvement scenario, whose implementation will ensure significant energy cost savings, estimated at 40.793 € annually, with simple payback period shorter than 4 years. Implementation of presented measures will improve facility's energy efficiency, represented through reduction of annual energy performance indicators by 6,14 %. Presented analysis revealed that steam generation and its usage in the industrial facilities offer a substantial potential for reduction of energy use and energy related cost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Although the countries of the Western Balkans are mostly electrified, there are still regions which do not have access to the electricity network or where the network capacity is insufficient. For the most part such areas are under special care of the state (i. e. underdeveloped, devastated by war, depopulated), on islands or in mountainous regions. Since the decentralized energy generation covers a broad range of technologies, including many renewable energy technologies that provide small-scale power at sites close to the users, such concept could be of interest for these locations. This paper identifies the areas in Western Balkans where such systems could be applied. Consideration is given to geographical locations as well as possible applications. Wind, hydro, solar photovoltaic, and biomass conversion systems were taken into consideration. Since the renewable energy sources data for Western Balkans region are rather scarce, the intention was to give a survey of the present situation and an estimate of future potential for decentralized energy generation based on renewable energy sources. The decentralized energy generation based on renewable energy sources in Western Balkans will find its niche easier for the users that will produce electricity for their own needs and for the users located in remote rural areas (off-grid applications).
