The article examines the effect of mulch on maize yield and water productivity under different methods of irrigation. The field experiment tested drip irrigation, furrow irrigation and flood irrigation under mulch and un-mulch conditions and recorded the maximum and minimum plant height, maximum maize grain weight, crop yield, water productivity, maize cob size, cob weight, leaf area index and number of grain per cob.

Background: Soil compaction adversely affects mechanical and water transmission characteristics, thus hampering crop growth and productivity. However, under coarse-textured soils, compaction to a certain extent is beneficial concerning restricting water transmission, increasing water retention and improving productivity. The present study was aimed to investigate the effect of compaction and irrigation on soil physical characteristics and productivity of summer moongbean. Methods: A field study was conducted on summer moongbean for two years in loamy sand soil at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, India. The treatments comprised three compaction levels i.e. no roller pass (C0), one roller pass (C1) and three roller pass (C3) in main plots and in subplots three irrigation regimes (I0.4, I0.6 and I0.8) with three replicates. Observations included soil bulk density and infiltration rate; seed emergence count, growth traits, yield and yield attributes. Result: Soil bulk density of 5-10 cm depth increased from 1.53 at C0 to 1.62 Mg m-3 at C3. However, infiltration rate of water in soil decreased to 38% with an increase in compaction level from C0 to C3. Seed emergence count was deleteriously affected with increasing compaction level but at 15 DAS, it increased by 33 and 42% at C1 and C3 levels under I0.8 regime as compared to I0.4. Plant height was also minimal at C3 irrespective of irrigation regimes. Compaction reduced the root length density in the surface layers but it increased in the sub-surface layers. Grain and straw yield increased by 15 and 13%, respectively in C1 over C3. An increase in irrigation regimes from I0.4 to I0.8, increased the mean straw and grain yield from 5.10 to 6.10 t ha-1 and 1.13 to 1.32 t ha-1 respectively. However, the irrigation water productivity decreased with an increase in irrigation frequency. These result suggest that compaction up to one roller pass with I0.8 irrigation regime can be beneficial for enhancing grain yield of summer moongbean in loamy sand soil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Combined effects of mulch, irrigation and nitrogen application at optimum level played an important role in influencing crop and water use efficiency. A field experiment was conducted during main maize growing season i.e. June to October for two consecutive years i.e. 2020 and 2021 with three N levels i.e. N1 (100 kg N ha-1 ), N2 (125 kg N ha-1 ) and N3 (150 kg N ha-1 ) in main plots, two mulch treatments including without mulch (M1) and with mulch application at the rate of 6 t ha-1 (M2) in sub plots and two irrigation regimes {IW/PAN-E ratio 0.6 (I1) and 0.9 (I2)} in sub-sub plots. The pooled data of two years indicated that the N31I2 treatment under mulch application resulted in significant increase of plant height, hundred grain weight, crop biomass, grain yield and water use efficiency of maize by 23.1%, 14.3%, 41.3%, 46.9 %, and 31.3%, respectively, over N1I1 un-mulched treatment. The root mass density increased with increase in nitrogen level and more so under mulch application. However, the interactive effects of mulch, irrigation and nitrogen were found to be not significant for most of the plant parameters. The average soil moisture content recorded at the time of maize harvesting was also observed to be higher under mulch application by 26.6% over un-mulched plots. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Decline in soil physical health and crop productivity are the major concerns in wheat-maize cropping system of northwest India. Depending on objective, conservation and deep tillage are the potential solutions. Therefore, a field study was conducted to investigate the interactive effects of land management practices and irrigation regimes on soil properties and wheat-maize productivity. The tillage treatments comprised of no-tillage, strip tillage, conventional tillage and deep tillage, while the irrigation regimes included three levels based on irrigation water over pan evaporation (IW/PAN-E) ratios i.e. I0.6, I0.9 and I1.2 for both wheat and maize crops. By shattering soil up to 45 cm depth, the deep tillage helped in improving infiltration rate by 31% over conventional tillage. However, the no-tillage improved soil aggregation by 38% than deep tillage. At subsurface depth (15-30 cm) the soil bulk density and penetration resistance were found to be significantly lower under deep tillage (1.52 Mg m-3 and 1.9 MPa) than conventional tillage (1.68 Mg m-3 and 2.8 MPa), respectively. The deep tillage enhanced root proliferation by increasing root length density by 44% and 34% than conventional tillage in maize and wheat, respectively. The grain yields (Mg ha-1) of maize and wheat were 14% and 12% more under deep tillage than conventional tillage, respectively. Transfer of technology to farmer's fields is the key towards improving crop productivity. The demonstrative experiments of proven technology of university to the farmers were conducted in 9 districts of Punjab. The significantly higher grain yield of paddy with in the fields with N applied at the time of sowing, after matching the leaf with leaf color chart (LCC), then at 21 DAT and 42 DAT from that with fixed N application in three equal splits at 0, 21, and 42 DAT or when N was applied as per LCC after basal application. The use of four sprays of potassium nitrate solution to cotton at weekly intervals resulted in significantly higher cotton seed yield as compared to the farmer's practices. The significantly higher grain yield was obtained with three sprays of 0.5 % MnSO4 as compared with farmer's practice. Full dose of P and K gave significantly higher grain yield of wheat as compared with half P and according to farmer's practice in all districts except Moga and Bathinda. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: In this three-armed RCT, we tested the effects of a telephone-delivered wisdom enhancement narrative therapy-based intervention (Tele-NT) and a telephone-delivered empathy-focused intervention (Tele-EP) in reducing loneliness against an active control group that received regular call (ACG) at the 4-week follow-up assessment., Design, Setting, Intervention, and Participants: To evaluate the effects of the interventions on loneliness, we randomized 287 older adults based in Hong Kong, ages 65 to 90, into Tele-NT (N = 97), Tele-EP (N = 95), or ACG (N = 95)., Measurement: The primary outcome was loneliness, calculated using the De Jong Gierveld Scale and the UCLA Loneliness Scale. Secondary outcomes were sleep quality, depressive symptoms, social network engagement, and perceived social support. Assessments were done before training and 4 weeks after the intervention period., Results: Results from linear mixed models showed significant positive effects of Tele-NT on loneliness measured by the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale compared to ACG. Compared to the ACG, the Tele-NT group significantly reduced loneliness at the 4-week follow-up (mean difference = -0.51, p = 0.019, Cohen's d = 0.60). However, the difference between Tele-EP and the ACG at the 4-week follow-up was not significant (MD = -0.34, p = 0.179, Cohen's d = 0.49). Tele-NT and Tele-EP did not show significant effects on the secondary outcomes, compared to the ACG., Conclusions: In this randomized clinical trial, we found that a 4-week wisdom enhancement narrative therapy program significantly reduced feelings of loneliness. Background: High fruit and vegetable diets are associated with reduced chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease but are infrequently used in hypertension treatment. Low acid diets are also associated with reduced chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease, and fruits and vegetables or oral sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO 3 ) lowers dietary acid., Methods: We randomized 153 hypertensive macroalbuminuric patients receiving pharmacologic chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease protection to get fruits and vegetables, oral NaHCO 3 , or Usual Care. We assessed the course of kidney disease progression and cardiovascular disease risk indices over five years., Results: Chronic kidney disease progression was slower in participants receiving fruits and vegetables or oral NaHCO 3 than Usual Care [mean (SE)] [-1.08 (0.06) and -1.17 (0.07) vs. -1.94 (0.11) mL/min/1.73m 2 / year, respectively, P's< .001). Yet, systolic blood pressure was lower, and cardiovascular disease risk indices improved more in participants receiving fruits and vegetables than in those receiving NaHCO 3 or Usual Care. This is the protocol for a Cochrane Review. The objectives are as follows: The aim of this systematic review is to advance our understanding of the key characteristics of effective preschool-based interventions designed to foster self-regulation. To accomplish this, the review addresses the following questions: 1. What types of preschool-based interventions have been developed to promote self-regulation? 2. What is the average effect of these preschool-based interventions on self-regulation, focusing on four key constructs: integrative effortful control, integrative executive function, self-regulation, and self-regulated learning? 3. Communication barriers often result in healthcare disparities. Language barriers in patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) frequently results in higher healthcare expenditures and potentially poorer patient-centred outcomes. Therefore, we decided to assess resource utilisation of patients with LEP at our high-LEP serving community hospital emergency department (ED) in Canada. Specifically, we examined whether LEP patients have a higher rate of CT utilisation and/or a higher rate of hospital admission from the ED.We enrolled 100 patients who presented to the ED in our study. Each patient's English proficiency was rated. We classified 31 patients as LEP patients and 69 patients as non-LEP patients. Within the LEP patients' group, 13 out of 31 patients (42%) received a CT scan, while in the non-LEP patients' group, 30 out of 69 patients (43%) received a CT scan. In addition, 28 out of 31 patients (90%) from the LEP patients' group were admitted to the hospital after the initial ED consultation, while in the non-LEP patients' group, 51 out of 69 patients (74%) were admitted.We did not find a difference in CT scan utilisation between LEP and non-LEP patients (p=0.89). Most US medical schools have 3 primary missions: education, research, and clinical service. Recently there have been calls for a fourth primary mission focused on improving health in their surrounding communities. To date, few medical schools have done so. To identify factors supporting and challenges to establishing a sustainable community impact mission, the authors conducted semi-structured key informant interviews with the dean, associate deans, departments chairs, and institute and center directors at a new US medical school that established a fourth "community impact" mission at its conception. Interviewees believed that it was appropriate for a community-focused tax-supported medical school to embrace community impact as a fourth mission to enhance community health outside of its hospitals and clinics. Many also felt that community impact should be an overriding framework for activities in the 3 primary missions. Achieving community impact would require creating a "learning health community" via partnerships with community organizations and linking faculty effort and funding to specific and valid measures of community health improvement. Sustainable funding would require core school funds and a broad portfolio of extramural funding. Faculty promotions with community impact as a focus would need explicit, achievable, and unique milestones. Interviewees made specific suggestions on the support and structure needed to launch and sustain this fourth mission. Establishing a fourth mission of community impact can extend medical schools' influence beyond typical health care venues to enhance the health of their communities and their residents. Doing so requires rethinking organizational structures, support, and measures of success.

Background: Diagrams which allow potential unrelated stem cell donors to visualize the stem cell collection process were hypothesized to support the recruitment and education of committed stem cell donors., Study Design and Methods: A series of bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell collection procedure diagrams were developed, featuring young adult male donors of varied ethnic backgrounds. Post-implementation, surveys were conducted to evaluate stakeholder perspective on the diagrams' utility. A quality improvement project was conducted at five stem cell drives from 2017 to 2018 at which recruiters did or did not show the diagrams to potential donors. Following the drives, registrants were invited to complete a survey exploring their experience, knowledge and attitude towards donation., Results: The diagrams were implemented in Canada in 07/2016. Of 293 participating registrants (24·7% non-Caucasian males) recruited at five drives between 2017 and 2018, 76% (n = 197) were shown the diagrams. Participants who were shown the diagrams were significantly more likely to report that the recruiters appeared very knowledgeable (89% vs. 76%, P = 0·019) and to report improved self-reported knowledge of stem cell donation (P = 0·010) compared to participants not shown the diagram. Data are also shown demonstrating that stakeholders in donor recruitment used and valued the diagrams and that use of the diagrams was associated with improved donor recruitment outcomes in Canada., Conclusion: This report is the first evaluation of stem cell collection diagrams in the literature. Background: Patients with blood, immune, or metabolic diseases may require a stem cell transplant as part of their treatment. However, 70% of patients do not have a suitable human leukocyte antigen match in their family, and need an unrelated donor. Individuals can register as potential donors at stem cell drives, where they provide consent and a tissue sample for human leukocyte antigen typing. The ideal donors are young, male, and from a diversity of ethnic backgrounds. However, in Canada, non-Caucasian males ages 17 to 35 years represent only 8.8% of listed donors., Study Design and Methods: The Stem Cell Club is a non-profit organization founded in 2011 in Canada that aims to augment recruitment of the most needed donors. The initiative published a recruitment toolkit online (www.stemcellclub.ca). Currently, there are 12 chapters at universities across Canada., Results: To date, the Stem Cell Club has recruited 6585 potential registrants, representing 1.63% of donors on Canada's donor-database. Of the recruited registrants, 58.3% were male; 60.3% of males self-reported as non-Caucasian, and 78.5% were ages 17 to 25 years. From 2015 to 2016, the initiative recruited 13.7% of all ethnically diverse males ages 17 to 35 years listed in Canada's donor database. Data from this initiative demonstrate sustainability and performance on key indicators of stem cell drive quality., Conclusion: The Stem Cell Club has developed a capacity to recruit 2600 donors annually, with the majority being males with a high degree of ethnic diversity. The initiative enhances the quality of Canada's unrelated donor-database, improving the chances that patients in need of an unrelated donor will find a match for transplant. Bioadhesives are polymeric hydrogels that can adhere to a tissue after crosslinking and are an essential element in nearly all surgeries worldwide. Several bioadhesives are commercially available. However, none of them are ideal. The main limitation of current tissue adhesives is the tradeoff between biocompatibility and mechanical strength, especially in wet hemorrhagic environments. Our novel bioadhesives are based on the natural polymers gelatin (coldwater fish) and alginate, crosslinked by carbodiimide (EDC). Two types of hemostatic agents with a layered silicate structure, montmorillonite (MMT) and kaolin, were loaded in order to improve the sealing ability in a hemorrhagic environment. The effect of the adhesive's components on its mechanical strength was studied by three different methods - burst strength, lap shear and compression. The viscosity, gelation time and structural features of the adhesive were also studied. A qualitative model that describes the effect of the bioadhesive's parameters on the cohesive and adhesive strength was developed. A formulation based on 400mg/mL gelatin, 10mg/mL alginate and 20mg/mL EDC was found as optimal, enabling a burst strength of 387mmHg. Incorporation of kaolin increased the burst strength by 25% due to microcomposite structuring, whereas MMT increased the burst strength by 50% although loaded in a smaller concentration, due to nano-structuring effects. This research clearly shows that the incorporation of kaolin and MMT in gelatin-alginate surgical sealants is a very promising novel approach for improving the bonding strength and physical properties of surgical sealants for use in hemorrhagic environments., Statement of Significance: The current manuscript focuses on novel bioadhesives, based on natural polymers and loaded with hemostatic agents with a layered silicate structure, in order to improve the sealing ability in hemorrhagic environment. Such composite bioadhesives have not been developed and studied before. The effect of the adhesive's components on its mechanical strength was studied by three different methods, as well as the physical properties and structural features. Thorough understanding of these unique biomaterials resulted in a qualitative model which describes the effect of the bioadhesive's parameters on the cohesive and adhesive strength. Thus, structure-property-function relationships are presented. Background: Universities have begun deploying public Internet systems that allow for easy search of their experts, expertise, and intellectual networks. Deployed first in biomedical schools but now being implemented more broadly, the initial motivator of these research networking systems was to enable easier identification of collaborators and enable the development of teams for research., Objective: The intent of the study was to provide the first description of the usage of an institutional research "social networking" system or research networking system (RNS)., Methods: Number of visits, visitor location and type, referral source, depth of visit, search terms, and click paths were derived from 2.5 years of Web analytics data. Feedback from a pop-up survey presented to users over 15 months was summarized., Results: RNSs automatically generate and display profiles and networks of researchers. Within 2.5 years, the RNS at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) achieved one-seventh of the monthly visit rate of the main longstanding university website, with an increasing trend. Visitors came from diverse locations beyond the institution. Close to 75% (74.78%, 208,304/278,570) came via a public search engine and 84.0% (210 out of a sample of 250) of these queried an individual's name that took them directly to the relevant profile page. In addition, 20.90% (214 of 1024) visits went beyond the page related to a person of interest to explore related researchers and topics through the novel and networked information provided by the tool. At the end of the period analyzed, more than 2000 visits per month traversed 5 or more links into related people and topics. One-third of visits came from returning visitors who were significantly more likely to continue to explore networked people and topics (P<.001). Responses to an online survey suggest a broad range of benefits of using the RNS in supporting the research and clinical mission., Conclusions: Returning visitors in an ever-increasing pool of visitors to an RNS are among those that display behavior consistent with using the tool to identify new collaborators or research topics. Through direct user feedback we know that some visits do result in research-enhancing outcomes, although we cannot address the scale of impact. With the rapid pace of acquiring visitors searching for individual names, the RNS is evolving into a new kind of gateway for the university.

Research-networking tools use data-mining and social networking to enable expertise discovery, matchmaking and collaboration, which are important facets of team science and translational research. Several commercial and academic platforms have been built, and many institutions have deployed these products to help their investigators find local collaborators. Recent studies, though, have shown the growing importance of multiuniversity teams in science. Unfortunately, the lack of a standard data-exchange model and resistance of universities to share information about their faculty have presented barriers to forming an institutionally supported national network. This case report describes an initiative, which, in only 6 months, achieved interoperability among seven major research-networking products at 28 universities by taking an approach that focused on addressing institutional concerns and encouraging their participation. With this necessary groundwork in place, the second phase of this effort can begin, which will expand the network's functionality and focus on the end users.

We followed simple- and complex-spike firing of Purkinje cells (PCs) in the floccular complex of the cerebellum through learned modifications of the pursuit eye movements of two monkeys. Learning was induced by double steps of target speed in which initially stationary targets move at a "learning" speed for 100 ms and then change to either a higher or lower speed in the same direction. In randomly interleaved control trials, targets moved at the learning speed in the opposite direction. When the learning direction was the ON direction for simple-spike responses, learning was associated with statistically significant changes in simple-spike firing for 10 of 32 PCs. Of the 10 PCs that showed significant expressions of learning, 8 showed changes in simple-spike output in the expected direction: increased or decreased firing when eye acceleration increased or decreased through learning. There were no statistically significant changes in simple-spike responses or eye acceleration during pursuit in the control direction. When the learning direction was in the OFF direction for simple-spike responses, none of 15 PCs showed significant correlates of learning. Although changes in simple-spike firing were recorded in only a subset of PCs, analysis of the population response showed that the same relationship between population firing and eye acceleration obtained before and after learning. Thus learning is associated with changes that render the modified population response appropriate to drive the changed behavior. To analyze complex-spike firing during learning we correlated complex-spike firing in the second, third, and fourth 100 ms after the onset of target motion with the retinal image motion in the previous 100 ms. Data were largely consistent with previous evidence that image motion drives complex spikes with a direction selectivity opposite that for simple spikes. Comparison of complex-spike responses at different times after the onset of control and learning target motions in the learning direction implied that complex spikes could guide learning during decreases but not increases in eye acceleration. Learning caused increases or decreases in the sensitivity of complex spikes to image motion in parallel with changes in eye acceleration. Complex-spike responses were similar in all PCs, including many in which learning did not modify simple-spike responses. Our data do not disprove current theories of cerebellar learning but suggest that these theories would have to be modified to account for simple- and complex-spike firing of floccular Purkinje cells reported here.

How are sensory-motor transformations organized in a cortical motor system? In general, sensory information is transformed through a variety of signal processing operations in the context of distinct coordinate frameworks. We studied the interaction of two distinct operations in pursuit eye movements, learning and vector-averaging, to gain insight into their underlying coordinate frameworks and their sequence in sensory-motor processing. Learning was induced in the initiation of pursuit eye movements by targets that moved initially at one speed for 100 msec and then increased or decreased to a sustained final speed. Vector averaging was studied by comparing the initial eye acceleration evoked by the simultaneous motion of two targets with that evoked by each target singly. Learning caused specific effects on the direction of the vector-averaged responses to two-target stimuli that included one target moving in the direction used to induce learning. Learned increases or decreases in eye acceleration caused the direction of the responses to two-targets to rotate toward or away from the learning direction. Learning also caused nonspecific changes in the responses to two-target stimuli. After any learning protocol, two-target responses usually became smaller, and their directions rotated away from the axis of the target motion used for learning. Quantitative analysis showed that the specific effects of learning were predicted most closely by a model in which vector averaging occurs downstream from the site(s) of learning. We suggest that the pursuit system creates parallel commands for potential movements to each of the targets in two-target stimuli, and that learning occurs in the coordinates of the potential movements.

Learning was induced in smooth pursuit eye movements by repeated presentation of targets that moved at one speed for 100 msec and then changed to a second, higher or lower, speed. The learned changes, measured as eye acceleration for the first 100 msec of pursuit, were largest in a "late" interval from 50 to 80 msec after the onset of pursuit and were smaller and less consistent in the earliest 30 msec of pursuit. In each experiment, target motion in one direction consisted of learning trials, whereas target motion in the opposite (control) direction consisted of trials in which targets moved at a constant speed for the entire duration of the trial. Under these conditions, the learning did not generalize to the control direction. For target motion in the learning direction, the changes in pursuit generalized to responses evoked by targets moving at speeds ranging from 15 to 45 degrees/sec as well as to targets of different colors and sizes. Although learning was induced at the initiation of pursuit, it generalized to the response to image motion in the learning direction when it was presented during pursuit in the learning direction. However, learning did not generalize to the response to image motion in the learning direction when it was presented during pursuit in the control direction. The results suggest that the learning does not occur in purely sensory or motor coordinates but in an intermediate reference frame at least partly defined by the direction of eye movement. The selectivity of learning provides new evidence for a previously hypothesized neural "switch" that gates visual information on the basis of movement direction. This selectivity also suggests that the locus of pursuit learning is in pathways related to the operation of the switch.

Background: Genital herpes simplex virus infection, a sexually transmitted disease, is the commonest cause of ulcerative genital infections among the young and adult population. The recurrent nature of the disease, possible cause of cervical dysplasia and neonatal herpes are the primary concern associated with this infection., Objective: The purpose of this double-blind, placebo-controlled study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy and tolerance of human leukocyte inferon-alpha in hydrophilic cream (2x10(6)IU/g) to cure patients afflicted with first episodes of genital herpes., Methods: Patients (n = 60), aged 18-40 years (mean: 22.8) with culture-confirmed diagnosis of herpes simplex genitalis, harboring 751 lesions (mean: 12.5) were randomly allocated to two parallel groups (active/placebo). Patients entered the study within 7 days (mean:4.2) of the onset of lesions. Each patient received a precoded 40-gram tube with instructions to apply the trial medication (at home) on their lesions thrice daily for 5 consecutive days (max. 15 topical applications/week). To assess the clinical efficacy patients were examined twice a week. A completely reepithelized lesion with persistent erythema was evaluated as healed or cured. Patients cured during the subsequent treatment period were spared further therapy and were requested to visit us as scheduled for recurrence control.
