Cognitive flexibility relies on hierarchically structured task representations that organize task contexts, relevant environmental features, and subordinate decisions. Despite ongoing interest in the human thalamus, its role in cognitive control has been understudied. This study explored thalamic representation and thalamocortical interactions that contribute to hierarchical cognitive control in humans. We found that several thalamic nuclei, including the anterior, mediodorsal, ventrolateral, and pulvinar nuclei, exhibited stronger evoked responses when subjects switch between task contexts. Decoding analysis revealed that thalamic activity encodes task contexts within the hierarchical task representations. To determine how thalamocortical interactions contribute to task representations, we developed a thalamocortical functional interaction model to predict task-related cortical representation. This data-driven model outperformed comparison models, particularly in predicting activity patterns in cortical regions that encode context representations. Collectively, our findings highlight the significant contribution of thalamic activity and thalamocortical interactions for contextually guided hierarchical cognitive control.

The digital twin city technique maps the massive city environmental and social data on a three-dimensional virtual model. It presents the operational status of physical world and supports intelligent city governance. However, the inefficient utilization of distributed data resources, and the lack of sharing and collaboration among multiple departments restrict the data formulation of digital twin city construction. This research proposes a new cross-domain spatio-temporal data fusion framework for supporting complex urban governance. It integrates the heterogeneous urban information generated and stored by different government departments using multiple-information techniques. A specified geographic base reflecting the real city status is established, using geographical entities with unified address as identifiers to encapsulate the urban elements information. We introduce a comprehensive urban spatio-temporal data center construction process, which has already supported multiple urban governance projects. The two distinct advantages in using this data fusion system are: 1) The proposed Bert+PtrNet+ESIM-based address mapping method associates the urban elements information to their corresponding geographic entities with 99.3% F1-Score on real-world dataset. 2) The Wuhan spatio-temporal data center operation illustrates the capability of our framework for complex urban governance, which significantly improves the efficiency of urban management and services. This integrated system engineering provides reference and inspiration for further spatio-temporal data management, which contributes to the future social governance in digital twin city platform.

This article proposes a new satellite-based framework for global-scale remote sensing that is integrated with on-orbit cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) services. These spaced-based services cover the entire earth surfaces using massive low earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation. Global-scale sensing of earth resources must be supported by massive number of LEO satellites equipped with cloud/AI computing services in real time. New satellite computer architectural features are presented along with some satellite constellation deployment topologies. We design satellite-based computers to support on-orbit remote sensing and AI scene analysis. This demands real-time performance without transmitting the sensed data back to earth for delayed processing. Notable space data services include on-orbit data sensing of large areas, machine learning from earth resources data, earth scene/event analysis, geomorphology observation, smart city management, disaster relief, global healthcare Internet of Things, environmental ecology protection, etc. We attempt to achieve high-efficiency earth resources utilization along with green energy, low cost, and robustness in real-life services.

Abstract Dynamic complexity in brain functional connectivity has hindered the effective use of signal processing or machine learning methods to diagnose neurological disorders such as epilepsy. This paper proposed a new graph-generative neural network (GGN) model for the dynamic discovery of brain functional connectivity via deep analysis of scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) signals recorded from various regions of a patient’s scalp. Brain functional connectivity graphs are generated for the extraction of spatial–temporal resolution of various onset epilepsy seizure patterns. Our supervised GGN model was substantiated by seizure detection and classification experiments. We train the GGN model using a clinically proven dataset of over 3047 epileptic seizure cases. The GGN model achieved a 91% accuracy in classifying seven types of epileptic seizure attacks, which outperformed the 65%, 74%, and 82% accuracy in using the convolutional neural network (CNN), graph neural networks (GNN), and transformer models, respectively. We present the GGN model architecture and operational steps to assist neuroscientists or brain specialists in using dynamic functional connectivity information to detect neurological disorders. Furthermore, we suggest to merge our spatial–temporal graph generator design in upgrading the conventional CNN and GNN models with dynamic convolutional kernels for accuracy enhancement.

IntroductionTop-down control underlies our ability to attend relevant stimuli while ignoring irrelevant, distracting stimuli and is a critical process for prioritizing information in working memory (WM). Prior work has demonstrated that top-down biasing signals modulate sensory-selective cortical areas during WM, and that the large-scale organization of the brain reconfigures due to WM demands alone; however, it is not yet understood how brain networks reconfigure between the processing of relevant versus irrelevant information in the service of WM.MethodsHere, we investigated the effects of task goals on brain network organization while participants performed a WM task that required participants to detect repetitions (e.g., 0-back or 1-back) and had varying levels of visual interference (e.g., distracting, irrelevant stimuli). We quantified changes in network modularity–a measure of brain sub-network segregation–that occurred depending on overall WM task difficulty as well as trial-level task goals for each stimulus during the task conditions (e.g., relevant or irrelevant).ResultsFirst, we replicated prior work and found that whole-brain modularity was lower during the more demanding WM task conditions compared to a baseline condition. Further, during the WM conditions with varying task goals, brain modularity was selectively lower during goal-directed processing of task-relevant stimuli to be remembered for WM performance compared to processing of distracting, irrelevant stimuli. Follow-up analyses indicated that this effect of task goals was most pronounced in default mode and visual sub-networks. Finally, we examined the behavioral relevance of these changes in modularity and found that individuals with lower modularity for relevant trials had faster WM task performance.DiscussionThese results suggest that brain networks can dynamically reconfigure to adopt a more integrated organization with greater communication between sub-networks that supports the goal-directed processing of relevant information and guides WM.

Thalamocortical interaction is a ubiquitous functional motif in the mammalian brain. Previously (Hwang et al., 2021), we reported that lesions to network hubs in the human thalamus are associated with multi-domain behavioral impairments in language, memory, and executive functions. Here, we show how task-evoked thalamic activity is organized to support these broad cognitive abilities. We analyzed functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from human subjects that performed 127 tasks encompassing a broad range of cognitive representations. We first investigated the spatial organization of task-evoked activity and found a basis set of activity patterns evoked to support processing needs of each task. Specifically, the anterior, medial, and posterior-medial thalamus exhibit hub-like activity profiles that are suggestive of broad functional participation. These thalamic task hubs overlapped with network hubs interlinking cortical systems. To further determine the cognitive relevance of thalamic activity and thalamocortical functional connectivity, we built a data-driven thalamocortical model to test whether thalamic activity can be used to predict cortical task activity. The thalamocortical model predicted task-specific cortical activity patterns, and outperformed comparison models built on cortical, hippocampal, and striatal regions. Simulated lesions to low-dimensional, multi-task thalamic hub regions impaired task activity prediction. This simulation result was further supported by profiles of neuropsychological impairments in human patients with focal thalamic lesions. In summary, our results suggest a general organizational principle of how the human thalamocortical system supports cognitive task activity.

Stream data processing systems are becoming increasingly popular in the big data era. Systems such as Apache Flink typically provide a number (e.g., 30) of configuration parameters to flexibly specify the amount of resources (e.g., CPU cores and memory) allocated for tasks. These parameters significantly affect task performance. However, it is hard to manually tune them for optimal performance for an unknown program running on a given cluster. An automatic as well as fast resource configuration tuning approach is therefore desired. To this end, we propose to leverage Bayesian optimization to automatically tune the resource configurations for stream data processing systems. We first select a machine learning model—Random Forest—to construct accurate performance models for a stream data processing program. We subsequently take the Bayesian optimization (BO) algorithm, along with the performance models, to iteratively search the optimal configurations for a stream data processing program. Experimental results show that our approach improves the 99th-percentile tail latency by a factor of 2.62× on average and up to 5.26× overall. Furthermore, our approach improves throughput by a factor of 1.05× on average and up to 1.21× overall.

Hubs in the human brain support behaviors that arise from brain network interactions. Previous studies have identified hub regions in the human thalamus that are connected with multiple functional networks. However, the behavioral significance of thalamic hubs has yet to be established. Our framework predicts that thalamic subregions with strong hub properties are broadly involved in functions across multiple cognitive domains. To test this prediction, we studied human patients with focal thalamic lesions in conjunction with network analyses of the human thalamocortical functional connectome. In support of our prediction, lesions to thalamic subregions with stronger hub properties were associated with widespread deficits in executive, language, and memory functions, whereas lesions to thalamic subregions with weaker hub properties were associated with more limited deficits. These results highlight how a large-scale network model can broaden our understanding of thalamic function for human cognition.

Nowadays, skin disease among humans has been a common disease, especially in America millions of people are suffering from various kinds of skin disease. Usually, these diseases have hidden dangers which lead to human not only lack of self-confidence and psychological depression but also a risk of skin cancer. Diagnosis of these kinds of diseases usually required medical experts with high-level instruments due to a lack of visual resolution in skin disease images. Moreover, manual diagnosis of skin disease is often subjective, time-consuming, and required more human effort. Thus, there is a need to develop a computer-aided system that automatically diagnoses the skin disease problem. Moreover, most of the existing works in skin disease used convolutional neural networks (CNN) with classical loss functions, which limit the model to learn discriminative features from skin images. Thus to address the above mention problem we proposed a new framework by fine-tuning layers of ResNet152 and InceptionResNet-V2 models with a triplet loss function. In the proposed framework, first, we learning the embedding from input images into Euclidean space by using deep CNN ResNet152 and InceptionResNet-V2 model. Second, we compute L-2 distance among corresponding images from euclidean space to learn discriminative features of skin disease images by using triplet loss function. Finally, classify the input images using these L-2 distances. Human face skin disease images used in the proposed framework are acquired from the Hospital in Wuhan China. Experiment results and their analysis shows the effectiveness of the proposed framework which achieve better accuracy than many existing works in skin disease tasks.

According to the report by the World Health Organization, depression, as the leading disabling disease in the world, has aroused widespread social concern. However, the shortage of medical and nursing staff in psychiatry conflicts with the rising nursing needs of depressed patients. First, depression is a chronic mental illness, its cure course is relatively long, and stable drug treatment and healthy living habits are keys to the curing process. Second, the disease feature where depression patients have stronger emotional needs and more sensitive mental states is ignored in existing health monitoring systems. In consideration of the above two aspects, a health management assistant is proposed in this paper, called MEMO box system, that focuses on emotion and takes smart medicine box as carrier. Specifically, the MEMO box system is composed of electronic medicine box and smart applications of phones, and electronic medicine box can collect the multi-mode data of patients, including their medication behaviors, daily activities, physical exercise data, and so on, which provides a data basis for the health assistant. Emotion recognition and sports detection algorithms are deployed in the edge cloud, which enables health service requests from patients to get quick response. With the cooperation of hardware and software in this system, patients are urged to take medicines on time to effectively control their conditions, and emotion cognition and exercise adjustment recommendation can be realized for depression patients through physiological data, thus providing patients with empathic sports recommendations.

Smart mobile devices have significantly increased the popularity of Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) at work, as they benefit people's daily lives. However, BYOD comes with several challenging issues such as limited hardware capacity, frequent upgrades of applications, and security and privacy concerns. Virtual Mobile Infrastructure (VMI), a general framework that provides more reliable and secure solution for BYOD, has therefore been proposed. The key of VMI is to host a mobile Operating System (OS) on a remote cloud data center, and run mobile applications on it. However, VMI faces performance challenge as it needs to display the entire virtualized desktop on a mobile device while the real content of the desktop is on a remote server. To address the performance challenge, we design and implement a VMI named vMobiDesk on top of Android with optimized network transfer mechanisms and display virtualization. In particular, vMobiDesk focuses on virtualizing the display of Android desktops, redirecting users' input events, providing audio support and remote camera. The experimental results show that vMobiDesk has low virtualization overhead, as well as enables mobile users to obtain good experiences with BYOD applications.

Intrinsic, unconstrained neural activity exhibits rich spatial, temporal, and spectral organization that undergoes continuous refinement from childhood through adolescence. The goal of this study was to investigate the development of theta (4−8 Hertz) and alpha (8−12 Hertz) oscillations from early childhood to adulthood (years 3–24), as these oscillations play a fundamental role in cognitive function. We analyzed eyes-open, resting-state EEG data from 96 participants to estimate genuine oscillations separately from the aperiodic (1/f) signal. We examined age-related differences in the aperiodic signal (slope and offset), as well as the peak frequency and power of the dominant posterior oscillation. For the aperiodic signal, we found that both the aperiodic slope and offset decreased with age. For the dominant oscillation, we found that peak frequency, but not power, increased with age. Critically, early childhood (ages 3–7) was characterized by a dominance of theta oscillations in posterior electrodes, whereas peak frequency of the dominant oscillation in the alpha range increased between ages 7 and 24. Furthermore, theta oscillations displayed a topographical transition from dominance in posterior electrodes in early childhood to anterior electrodes in adulthood. Our results provide a quantitative description of the development of theta and alpha oscillations.

With the development of network-enabled sensors and artificial intelligence algorithms, various human-centered smart systems are proposed to provide services with higher quality, such as smart healthcare, affective interaction, and autonomous driving. Considering cognitive computing is an indispensable technology to develop these smart systems, this paper proposes human-centered computing assisted by cognitive computing and cloud computing. First, we provide a comprehensive investigation of cognitive computing, including its evolution from knowledge discovery, cognitive science, and big data. Then, the system architecture of cognitive computing is proposed, which consists of three critical technologies, i.e., networking (e.g., Internet of Things), analytics (e.g., reinforcement learning and deep learning), and cloud computing. Finally, it describes the representative applications of human-centered cognitive computing, including robot technology, emotional communication system, and medical cognitive system.

The ability to inhibit motor response is crucial for daily activities. However, whether brain networks connecting spatially distinct brain regions can explain individual differences in motor inhibition is not known. Therefore, we took a graph-theoretic perspective to examine the relationship between the properties of topological organization in functional brain networks and motor inhibition. We analyzed data from 141 healthy adults aged 20 to 78, who underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and performed a stop-signal task along with neuropsychological assessments outside the scanner. The graph-theoretic properties of 17 functional brain networks were estimated, including within-network connectivity and between-network connectivity. We employed multiple linear regression to examine how these graph-theoretical properties were associated with motor inhibition. The results showed that between-network connectivity of the salient ventral attention network and dorsal attention network explained the highest and second highest variance of individual differences in motor inhibition. In addition, we also found those two networks span over brain regions in the frontal-cingulate-parietal network, suggesting that these network interactions are also important to motor inhibition.

With big data growth in biomedical and healthcare communities, accurate analysis of medical data benefits early disease detection, patient care, and community services. However, the analysis accuracy is reduced when the quality of medical data is incomplete. Moreover, different regions exhibit unique characteristics of certain regional diseases, which may weaken the prediction of disease outbreaks. In this paper, we streamline machine learning algorithms for effective prediction of chronic disease outbreak in disease-frequent communities. We experiment the modified prediction models over real-life hospital data collected from central China in 2013-2015. To overcome the difficulty of incomplete data, we use a latent factor model to reconstruct the missing data. We experiment on a regional chronic disease of cerebral infarction. We propose a new convolutional neural network (CNN)-based multimodal disease risk prediction algorithm using structured and unstructured data from hospital. To the best of our knowledge, none of the existing work focused on both data types in the area of medical big data analytics. Compared with several typical prediction algorithms, the prediction accuracy of our proposed algorithm reaches 94.8% with a convergence speed, which is faster than that of the CNN-based unimodal disease risk prediction algorithm.

In this paper, we review the background and state-of-the-art of the narrow-band Internet of Things (NB-IoT). We first introduce NB-IoT general background, development history, and standardization. Then, we present NB-IoT features through the review of current national and international studies on NB-IoT technology, where we focus on basic theories and key technologies, i.e., connection count analysis theory, delay analysis theory, coverage enhancement mechanism, ultra-low power consumption technology, and coupling relationship between signaling and data. Subsequently, we compare several performances of NB-IoT and other wireless and mobile communication technologies in aspects of latency, security, availability, data transmission rate, energy consumption, spectral efficiency, and coverage area. Moreover, we analyze five intelligent applications of NB-IoT, including smart cities, smart buildings, intelligent environment monitoring, intelligent user services, and smart metering. Finally, we summarize security requirements of NB-IoT, which need to be solved urgently. These discussions aim to provide a comprehensive overview of NB-IoT, which can help readers to understand clearly the scientific problems and future research directions of NB-IoT.

Cognitive control, which continues to mature throughout adolescence, is supported by the ability for well-defined organized brain networks to flexibly integrate information. However, the development of intrinsic brain network organization and its relationship to observed improvements in cognitive control are not well understood. In the present study, we used resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI), graph theory, the antisaccade task, and rigorous head motion control to characterize and relate developmental changes in network organization, connectivity strength, and integration to inhibitory control development. Subjects were 192 10-26-y-olds who were imaged during 5 min of rest. In contrast to initial studies, our results indicate that network organization is stable throughout adolescence. However, cross-network integration, predominantly of the cingulo-opercular/salience network, increased with age. Importantly, this increased integration of the cingulo-opercular/salience network significantly moderated the robust effect of age on the latency to initiate a correct inhibitory control response. These results provide compelling evidence that the transition to adult-level inhibitory control is dependent upon the refinement and strengthening of integration between specialized networks. Our findings support a novel, two-stage model of neural development, in which networks stabilize prior to adolescence and subsequently increase their integration to support the cross-domain incorporation of information processing critical for mature cognitive control.
