Abstract To improve the stability of the inverter‐based microgrid (MG), this paper employs a novel data‐driven based method to coordinately adjust control parameters of inverters in a fast local manner. During the design process, an offline eigenvalue based optimization problem that is used to calculate the optimal control parameters under various operating conditions is first constructed. In order to reduce reliance on full system information, a feature selection algorithm is utilized to extract the most relevant local measurements that influence the adjustment of each control parameter. Then, regarding local measurements as input variables and optimal control parameters as output variables, based on northern goshawk optimization (NGO) and long short‐term memory (LSTM) network, a novel deep learning algorithm is proposed to train the local parameter adjustment model (LPAM) by learning the mapping relationship between them. During the application, to guarantee the stability of MG all the time, a security region based shielding mechanism is developed, where the improper control parameter adjustment will be replaced by a safe one. The case study indicates that the proposed algorithm has better mapping accuracy than traditional LSTM neural networks and also faster calculation speed than the traditional offline optimization‐based method. The effectiveness and advantages of the proposed method are demonstrated in a modified 9‐bus MG.

Tumor vaccine therapy offers significant advantages over conventional treatments, including reduced toxic side effects. However, it currently functions primarily as an adjuvant treatment modality in clinical oncology due to limitations in tumor antigen selection and delivery methods. Tumor vaccines often fail to elicit a sufficiently robust immune response against progressive tumors, thereby limiting their clinical efficacy. In this study, we developed a nanoparticle-based tumor vaccine, OVA@HA-PEI, utilizing ovalbumin (OVA) as the presenting antigen and hyaluronic acid (HA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) as adjuvants and carriers. This formulation significantly enhanced the proliferation of immune cells and cytokines, such as CD3, CD8, interferon-[Formula: see text], and tumor necrosis factor-[Formula: see text], in vivo, effectively activating an immune response against B16–F10 tumors. In vivo fluorescence flow cytometry (IVFC) has already become an effective method for monitoring circulating tumor cells (CTCs) due to its direct, noninvasive, and long-term detection capabilities. Our study utilized a laboratory-constructed IVFC system to monitor the immune processes induced by the OVA@HA-PEI tumor vaccine and an anti-programmed death-1 (PD-1) antibody. The results demonstrated that the combined treatment of OVA@HA-PEI and anti-PD-1 antibody significantly improved the survival time of mice compared to anti-PD-1 antibody treatment alone. Additionally, this combination therapy substantially reduced the number of CTCs in vivo, increased the clearance rate of CTCs by the immune system, and slowed tumor progression. These findings greatly enhance the clinical application prospects of IVFC and tumor vaccines.

Melanoma is a highly metastatic and lethal skin tumor originating from melanocyte malignancy. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are key endogenous biomarkers in melanoma metastasis. Melanin and blood vessels exhibit substantial disparities in their absorbance profiles at select wavelengths, a characteristic that can be adeptly harnessed to differentiate the photoacoustic signals they generate. Photoacoustic flow cytometry (PAFC), which harnesses this principle, enables the monitoring of CTC flowing in vivo. However, this technique is constrained by the inefficiency and high false positive rates associated with traditional algorithms, including the Pauta criterion. In this study, a PAFC system is developed to identify dynamic features of flowing CTCs and the inhibitory effects of PD-L1 inhibitors, using a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) and a long short-term memory (LSTM) network. The 1D-CNN achieves a balance between classification accuracy and speed. Meanwhile, the LSTM exhibits superior specificity but limited sensitivity. By combining the advantages of the two networks, the inhibitory effect of PD-L1 inhibitors that reduce the CTCs in the blood and block metastasis to other organs of melanoma mouse models are studied noninvasively in vivo and validated in vitro. The PAFC equipped with the deep learning framework provides a more timely and efficient assessment of PD-L1 inhibitors compared to conventional pathological methods, significantly enhancing the melanoma diagnosis and treatment monitoring. This technology demonstrates potential as a significant tool for the non-invasive, dynamic evaluation of melanoma progression and response to immunotherapy.

Abstract The demand for high‐performance X‐ray detectors leads to material innovation for efficient photoelectric conversion and carrier transfer. However, current X‐ray detectors are often susceptible to chemical and irradiation instability, complex fabrication processes, hazardous components, and difficult compatibility. Here, we investigate a two‐dimensional (2D) material with a relatively low atomic number, Ti3C2Tx MXenes, and single crystal silicon for X‐ray detection and single‐pixel imaging (SPI). We fabricate a Ti3C2Tx MXene/Si X‐ray detector demonstrating remarkable optoelectronic performance. This detector exhibits a sensitivity of 1.2 × 107 μC Gyair−1 cm−2, a fast response speed with a rise time of 31 μs, and an incredibly low detection limit of 2.85 nGyair s−1. These superior performances are attributed to the unique charge coupling behavior under X‐ray irradiation via intrinsic polaron formation. The device remains stable even after 50 continuous hours of high‐dose X‐ray irradiation. Our device fabrication process is compatible with silicon‐based semiconductor technology. Our work suggests new directions for eco‐friendly X‐ray detectors and low‐radiation imaging system.

The central and western coal resources have the highest degree of enrichment and superior development conditions in China. With the improvement of mining efficiency, the disturbance of high-intensity and large-mining-height mining mode to groundwater system also increases. In particular, the groundwater in the aquifer outside the disturbance range of the water-conducting fracture zone gradually participates in the mine water inflow process during the coal mining. Such mode leads to a series of problems such as large deviation of mine water inflow prediction, inaccurate evaluation of water inflow risk and unclear water hazard prevention measures, which brings great hidden risks to the current mine water hazard prevention and control. In this paper, a derivative mode of dynamic water inrush is summarized. With the coal mining, the evolution of groundwater system caused by overburden failure will induce new disaster sources, resulting in different forms of water inrush. Its connotation is to change the basis of defining the derivative dynamic water inrush model from the traditional static analysis before mining to the dynamic evaluation considering the change in the whole mining cycle. The derived dynamic water inrush model of the mine can be preliminarily divided into three categories, namely, “skylight leakage type”, “bed separation disaster type” and “channel permeability increase type”. This paper mainly discusses the derivative dynamic water inrush mode of “skylight leakage type”. Taking the Shanxi Yushen mining area, a shallow buried coal seam mining area with high strength and large mining height, as an example, the disaster-pregnant conditions of “skylight supply type” derivative disasters are discussed in depth. Through supplementary analysis of water-richness and hydraulic connection strength of indirect water-filled aquifer, the comprehensive evaluation of water inrush risk in roof aquifer is achieved, and the evaluation method system of disaster derivative model is put forward. Through the transformation of mining mode, the active prevention and control system is constructed. A passive prevention and control system is constructed by multi-objective advance drainage before mining and local grouting after mining. By further refining the mine water inrush disaster model, optimizing the evaluation system and establishing comprehensive prevention and control technology, it provides a scientific basis for the protection of groundwater resources and safe low-carbon mining in ecologically fragile areas.

Abstract Wet-chemical synthesis via heating bulk solution is powerful to obtain nanomaterials. However, it still suffers from limited reaction rate, controllability, and massive consumption of energy/reactants, particularly for the synthesis on specific substrates. Herein, we present an innovative wet-interfacial Joule heating (WIJH) approach to synthesize various nanomaterials in a sub-second ultrafast, programmable, and energy/reactant-saving manner. In the WIJH, Joule heat generated by the graphene film (GF) is confined at the substrate-solution interface. Accompanied by instantaneous evaporation of the solvent, the temperature is steeply improved and the precursors are concentrated, thereby synergistically accelerating and controlling the nucleation and growth of nanomaterials on the substrate. WIJH leads to a record high crystallization rate of HKUST-1 (~1.97 μm s−1), an ultralow energy cost (9.55 × 10−6 kWh cm−2) and low precursor concentrations, which are up to 5 orders of magnitude faster, −6 and −2 orders of magnitude lower than traditional methods, respectively. Moreover, WIJH could handily customize the products’ amount, size, and morphology via programming the electrified procedures. The as-prepared HKUST-1/GF enables the Joule-heating-controllable and low-energy-required capture and liberation towards CO2. This study opens up a new methodology towards the superefficient synthesis of nanomaterials and solvent-involved Joule heating.

Due to the incurred damages to the combustors, large-amplitude self-sustained thermoacoustic oscillations are unwanted in many propulsion systems, such as liquid/solid rocket motors and aero-engines. To suppress these thermoacoustic oscillations efficiently, the mechanism of thermoacoustic instability needs to be clarified. Following the previous experimental work, the transitions to instability in a Rijke-type thermoacoustic system with an axially distributed heat source are studied numerically in this paper. The URANS numerical method is utilized and verified by means of a mesh sensitivity analysis. The influences of the axially distributed heater length, the heater location, and the mean flow velocity on the nonlinear dynamic behaviors of thermoacoustic oscillations are evaluated. To explore the corresponding mechanism behind these influences, the principle of acoustic energy conservation has been applied. The acoustic energy gains from the thermal-acoustic coupling are quantified via Rayleigh’s integral, and their phase differences are calculated by the cross-correlation function. The acoustic damping induced by the vortex dissipation is qualitatively analyzed by the characteristics of the flow fields in the Rijke tube. Finally, as the heater length, the heater location, or the mean flow velocity is varied, three mechanisms of the transitions to instability in a Rijke-type thermoacoustic system are identified.

With the introduction of Earth observation satellites, the classification technology through high-definition remote sensing images appeared. After decades of evolution, the land cover classification method in high-definition satellite maps has been gradually improved. Recently, high-definition remote sensing maps have been applied to land cover classification. Nowadays, classification methods using high-definition maps have these following problems. First, the traditional land cover classification methods cannot process the rich details in high-definition maps. Second, there are different acquisition conditions in the maps of different regions, which leads to distortion, deformation, and illumination blur of remote sensing images. Third, the existing methods are unable to provide a good generalization performance. To address these issues, a dual-branch parallel network structure is proposed, called Sgformer, to improve the performance of the transformer in the context of high-definition remote sensing maps. The network enhances perceptual learning with convolution operators that extract local features and a self-attention module that captures global representations. Local information and global representations with semantic divergence are fused through a feature coupling module. At last, a decoder is designed to maximize the preservation of local features and global representations and to better recover high-definition feature maps. The results of semantic segmentation experiments show that the methodology in this study has higher accuracy than the other methodologies.

Introduction Recent preclinical studies have discovered unique synergism between radiotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors, which has already brought significant survival benefit in lung cancer. In locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC), neoadjuvant radiotherapy plus immune checkpoint inhibitors have also achieved surprisingly high pathological complete response (pCR) rates even in proficient mismatch-repair patients. As existing researches are all phase 2, single-cohort trials, we aim to conduct a randomised, controlled trial to further clarify the efficacy and safety of this novel combination therapy.Methods and analysis Eligible patients with LARC are randomised to three arms (two experiment arms, one control arm). Patients in all arms receive long-course radiotherapy plus concurrent capecitabine as neoadjuvant therapy, as well as radical surgery. Distinguishingly, patients in arm 1 also receive anti-PD-1 (Programmed Death 1) treatment starting at Day 8 of radiation (concurrent plan), and patients in arm 2 receive anti-PD-1 treatment starting 2 weeks after completion of radiation (sequential plan). Tislelizumab (anti-PD-1) is scheduled to be administered at 200 mg each time for three consecutive times, with 3-week intervals. Randomisation is stratified by different participating centres, with a block size of 6. The primary endpoint is pCR rate, and secondary endpoints include neoadjuvant-treatment-related adverse event rate, as well as disease-free and overall survival rates at 2, 3 and 5 years postoperation. Data will be analysed with an intention-to-treat approach.Ethics and dissemination This protocol has been approved by the institutional ethical committee of Beijing Friendship Hospital (the primary centre) with an identifying serial number of 2022-P2-050-01. Before publication to peer-reviewed journals, data of this research will be stored in a specially developed clinical trial database.Trial registration number NCT05245474.

Abstract The channel capacity of terahertz (THz) wireless communications can be increased by multiplexing multiple orthogonal data-carrying orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) beams. In THz links using OAM multiplexing (e.g., Laguerre-Gaussian $${\mathrm{LG}}_{ \ell,p}$$ LG ℓ , p beams with p = 0), the system performance might degrade due to limited receiver aperture size and multipath effects. A limited-size aperture can truncate the received beam profile along the radial direction. In addition, due to beam divergence, part of the beam might interact with reflectors in the environment, causing the signal to reflect and interfere at the receiver with the directly propagating part of the beam; this is known as the multipath effect. In this paper, we simulate and analyze the impact of both effects on the equality of the THz OAM link by considering a full two-dimensional (2-D) LG modal set. The simulation results show (i) a limited-size receiver aperture can induce power loss and modal power coupling mainly to LG modes with the same ℓ but p > 0 for directly propagated OAM beams; (ii) the multipath effect can induce modal power coupling across multiple 2-D LG modes, which leads to inter-channel coupling among the different channels in an OAM multiplexed link; (iii) the interference between the reflected and direct beams can induce intra-channel coupling between the received signals from the reflected and direct beams; and (iv) beams with a higher OAM order (e.g., from ± 1 to ± 5) or a lower carrier frequency (e.g., from 0.1 to 1 THz) experience larger intra- and inter-channel coupling. The intra- and inter-channel coupling in an OAM-multiplexed THz link can degrade the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and induce SNR penalty when compared to a single-channel system.

BackgroundThe influence of body composition on the outcome of colorectal cancer surgery is controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of visceral obesity and sarcobesity on the incidence of total and surgical complications after radical resection of colorectal cancer.MethodsWe collected a total of 426 patients who underwent elective radical resection of colorectal cancer at Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University from January 2017 to May 2018. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 387 patients were finally included. A CT scan at the level of the L3-L4 intervertebral disk was selected to measure the values of visceral fat area and skeletal muscle area. Multivariate analysis was used to explore the independent risk/protective factors affecting postoperative complications.Results128 (33.1%) patients developed complications, and 44 (11.4%) patients developed major complications. Among them, 111 patients developed surgical complications and 21 developed medical complications. Visceral fat area (Z = −3.271, p = 0.001), total fat area (Z = −2.613, p = 0.009), visceral fat area to subcutaneous fat area ratio (V/S, Z = −2.633, p = 0.008), and sarcobesity index (Z = −2.282, p = 0.023) were significantly associated with total complications. Visceral fat area (Z = −2.119, p = 0.034) and V/S (Z = −2.010, p = 0.044) were significantly associated with total surgical complications. Sarcobesity index, smoking, stoma, blood loss, surgery time, and American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) score were selected as risk factors for total postoperative complications according to LASSO regression. Multivariate logistic regression analysis suggested that sarcobesity index was an independent risk factor for postoperative total complications and surgical complications. Subgroup analysis suggested that albumin level was an independent protective factor for postoperative total complications in male patients. Smoking, operative time, and sarcobesity index were independent risk factors, and cholesterol was an independent protective factor for total postoperative complications in female patients.ConclusionIncreased sarcobesity index is an independent risk factor for postoperative complications in patients with colorectal cancer, while visceral fat area is not. For female patients, smoking, operation time, and obesity index are independent risk factors for postoperative complications, while cholesterol is an independent protective factor. For male patients, serum albumin is an independent protective factor for postoperative complications.

Abstract The processing capability is vital for the wide applications of materials to forge structures as-demand. Graphene-based macroscopic materials have shown excellent mechanical and functional properties. However, different from usual polymers and metals, graphene solids exhibit limited deformability and processibility for precise forming. Here, we present a precise thermoplastic forming of graphene materials by polymer intercalation from graphene oxide (GO) precursor. The intercalated polymer enables the thermoplasticity of GO solids by thermally activated motion of polymer chains. We detect a critical minimum containing of intercalated polymer that can expand the interlayer spacing exceeding 1.4 nm to activate thermoplasticity, which becomes the criteria for thermal plastic forming of GO solids. By thermoplastic forming, the flat GO-composite films are forged to Gaussian curved shapes and imprinted to have surface relief patterns with size precision down to 360 nm. The plastic-formed structures maintain the structural integration with outstanding electrical (3.07 × 105 S m−1) and thermal conductivity (745.65 W m−1 K−1) after removal of polymers. The thermoplastic strategy greatly extends the forming capability of GO materials and other layered materials and promises versatile structural designs for more broad applications. Aiming at the problem that the current Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) cannot simultaneously meet the high-speed and real-time requirements of random number generation in quantum key distribution communication, this paper improves the QRNG scheme based on pulse laser as light source to extract phase information. The random phase information is converted into light intensity information by single-mode Michelson interferometer, and then converted into electrical signal by high-speed Photo Detector (PD). Finally, the real-time quantum random number generation rate of 1.1 Gbit/s is obtained by using 16 bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) with 250 MHz sampling rate and 50% extraction rate. A high-speed, real-time and integrated QRNG equipment is realized. At the same time, the advantages of this scheme and continuous laser as light source in principle and system design are compared. QRNG based on pulsed laser light source has passed various tests of China Academy of Information and Communications. The random number output by the product in the process of stable operation can pass 15 test standards specified in the State Cryptography Administration randomness test document GB/T 32915-2016 and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) test standards.

Abstract Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) is an established biomarker of cancer metastasis. The circulation dynamics of CTCs are important for understanding the mechanisms underlying tumor cell dissemination. Although studies have revealed that the circadian rhythm may disrupt the growth of tumors, it is generally unclear whether the circadian rhythm controls the release of CTCs. In clinical examinations, the current in vitro methods for detecting CTCs in blood samples are based on a fundamental assumption that CTC counts in the peripheral blood do not change significantly over time, which is being challenged by recent studies. Since it is not practical to draw blood from patients repeatedly, a feasible strategy to investigate the circadian rhythm of CTCs is to monitor them by in vivo detection methods. Fluorescence in vivo flow cytometry (IVFC) is a powerful optical technique that is able to detect fluorescent circulating cells directly in living animals in a noninvasive manner over a long period of time. In this study, we applied fluorescence IVFC to monitor CTCs noninvasively in an orthotopic mouse model of human prostate cancer. We observed that CTCs exhibited stochastic bursts over cancer progression. The probability of the bursting activity was higher at early stages than at late stages. We longitudinally monitored CTCs over a 24-h period, and our results revealed striking daily oscillations in CTC counts that peaked at the onset of the night (active phase for rodents), suggesting that the release of CTCs might be regulated by the circadian rhythm.

Abstract Orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) multiplexing has been utilized to increase the channel capacity in both millimeter-wave and optical domains. Terahertz (THz) wireless communication is attracting increasing attention due to its broadband spectral resources. Thus, it might be valuable to explore the system performance of THz OAM links to further increase the channel capacity. In this paper, we study through simulations the fundamental system-degrading effects when using multiple OAM beams in THz communications links under atmospheric turbulence. We simulate and analyze the effects of divergence, turbulence, limited-size aperture, and misalignment on the signal power and crosstalk of THz OAM links. We find through simulations that the system-degrading effects are different in two scenarios with atmosphere turbulence: (a) when we consider the same strength of phasefront distortion, faster divergence (i.e., lower frequency; smaller beam waist) leads to higher power leakage from the transmitted mode to neighbouring modes; and (b) however, when we consider the same atmospheric turbulence, the divergence effect tends to affect the power leakage much less, and the power leakage increases as the frequency, beam waist, or OAM order increases. Far-infrared (FIR) is considered to be an ideal method to promote fatigue recovery due to its high permeability and strong radiation. In this paper, we report a flexible and wearable graphene heating device to help fatigue recovery of human exercise by using its high FIR divergence property. This study compares two different fatigue recovery methods, graphene far-infrared heating device hot application and natural recovery, over a 20 min recovery time among the male colleges’ exhaustion exercise. Experimental results show that the achieved graphene device holds excellent electro-thermal radiation conversion efficiency of 70% and normal total emissivity of 89%. Moreover, the graphene FIR therapy in our work is more energy-efficient, easy to use, and wearable than traditional fatigue recovery methods. Such an anti-fatigue strategy offers new opportunities for enlarging potential applications of graphene film in body science, athletic training recovery, and wearable devices.

In this paper, the effects of the geometry of a submerged nozzle on the nozzle damping characteristics are studied numerically. Firstly, the numerical method is verified by the previous experimental data. Then, the mesh sensitivity analysis and the monitor position independence analysis are carried out. Thirdly, the effects of nozzle geometry on nozzle damping are systematically studied, and focuses are placed on the cavity size, convergent angle and divergent angle. The pulse decay method is utilized to evaluate the nozzle decay coefficient. Several important results are obtained: the submerged cavity with large volume leads to low frequency acoustic oscillations in the combustion chamber and corresponds to a small nozzle decay coefficient; then, as the nozzle convergent angle is decreased, the nozzle decay coefficient is increased. In addition, the nozzle divergent angle has a trivial effect on the nozzle decay coefficient; and lastly, the effects of the temperature on the nozzle damping capability are conducted. The results show that an increase of the working temperature leads to an increase of the nozzle decay coefficient; therefore, the damping force is increased.

The accurate and fast diagnosis of transformer winding deformation faults is of significance to power suppliers and utilities. An improved winding mechanical deformation fault classification method is proposed. In this study, the transformer frequency response data is used to draw polar plots, and then its texture features are extracted for fault classification. The classification model constructed by multiple support vector machines is successfully obtained and shows good classification effect. Besides, this article uses an improved genetic algorithm based on the Emperor-Selective mating scheme and catastrophic operation, to optimize the parameters of support vector machine. The feasibility and accuracy of the proposed method are verified with experimental data obtained from a model transformer, and the proposed method is demonstrated to exhibit better performance compared with the traditional method.

Beams carrying orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) have gained much interest due to their unique amplitude and phase structures. In terms of communication systems, each of the multiple independent data-carrying beams can have a different OAM value and be orthogonal to all other beams. This paper will describe the use of multiplexing and the simultaneous transmission of multiple OAM beams for enhancing the capacity of communication systems. We will highlight the key advances and technical challenges in the areas of (a) free-space and fiber communication links, (b) mitigation of modal coupling and channel crosstalk effects, (c) classical and quantum systems, and (d) optical and radio frequency beam multiplexing.

Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model of a strain clamp-conductor system is established, with an NY-300/40 compression-type strain clamp taken as an example. The tensile load-carrying capacity of the strain clamp under standard crimping conditions is analyzed with LS-DYNA software, and the simulation results are compared with the experimental results to verify the accuracy of the model. On this basis, the tensile load-bearing capacity and failure mode of the strain clamp-conductor system are analyzed when the crimping length between the steel anchor and steel core is insufficient. Studies have shown that the grip strength of a strain clamp is provided mainly by the crimping between the steel anchor and the steel core. Under standard crimping conditions, the tensile load-bearing capacity of the strain clamp can meet the design requirements. Moreover, because the crimping length between the steel anchor and steel core is sufficient, the strain clamp fails due to aluminum strand breakage rather than the steel core being pulled out of the steel anchor. When the crimping length is insufficient, the grip strength of the strain clamp decreases with decreasing crimping length. Although the absolute value of the grip strength does not decrease significantly, the failure mode gradually changes from the breakage of the aluminum strands to the steel core being pulled out of the steel anchor. For the NY-300/40 compression-type strain clamp, the corresponding critical crimping length (i.e., when the change in failure modes occurs) between the steel core and the steel anchor is 50∼60 mm.

Background: After achieving a clinical complete response through neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy, a nonoperative management approach for rectal cancer patients known as Wait and Watch (W&W) has gained increasing attention. However, the W&W strategy has been related to higher local recurrence and ambiguous long-term survival. This meta-analysis compared key prognosis indicators between W&W and surgical treatment in an effort to clarify some long-standing points of confusion. Methods: Pubmed, Web of Science, EMbase, Cochrane Library were searched for relevant researches comparing W&W with surgery treatment, with a time criteria set from 1 January 2002 to 4 July 2019. Endpoints were 2-year local regrowth/recurrence, 2-year distant metastasis (plus local regrowth/recurrence), 3- and 5-year disease-free survival (DFS), and overall survival (OS). Results: In total, nine studies with 801 patients were enrolled, of which 348 were managed by W&W and 453 by surgery. Surgery patients were further divided into a pathological complete response (pCR) group (all included patients achieved pCR) and a surgery group (consisting of both pCR and non-pCR patients without deliberate screening). Compared with the surgery group, W&W patients have higher 3- and 5-year OS, and are not inferior on 2-year local regrowth (LR), 2-year distant metastasis (DM)/DM+LR, and 3- and 5-year DFS. On the other hand, compared with the pCR group, the W&W group is inferior on 2-year LR, 3- and 5-year DFS, and 5-year OS, and not inferior on 2-year DM/DM+LR and 3-year OS. Conclusions: In contrast with patients undergoing surgical treatment, the W&W group has higher 3- and 5-year OS, and is not inferior on other major prognostic indicators, which, however, is based on the fact that the tumor stage in the W&W group is generally earlier. Versus surgically treated patients who acquired pCR, W&W group is inferior on all major prognostic indicators except 2-year DM/DM+LR and 3-year OS. Additionally, by comparison of cCR definitions across different studies, we conclude that implementation of the strictest cCR criteria is critical for W&W patients to acquire maximum prognostic benefit.

The fluorescence-based in vivo flow cytometry (IVFC) is an emerging tool to monitor circulating cells in vivo. As a noninvasive and real-time diagnostic technology, the fluorescence-based IVFC allows long-term monitoring of circulating cells without changing their native biological environment. It has been applied for various biological applications (e.g., monitoring circulating tumor cells). In this work, we will review our recent works on fluorescence-based IVFC. The operation principle and typical biological applications will be introduced. In addition, the recent advances in IVFC flow cytometry based on photoacoustic effects and other label-free detection methods such as imaging-based methods, diffuse-light methods, hybrid multimodality methods and multispectral methods are also summarized.

Flexible electronics with continuous monitoring ability a extensively preferred in various medical applications. In this work, a flexible pressure sensor based on porous graphene (PG) is proposed for continuous cardiovascular status monitoring. The whole sensor is fabricated in situ by ink printing technology, which grants it the potential for large-scale manufacture. Moreover, to enhance its long-term usage ability, a polyethylene terephthalate/polyethylene vinylacetate (PET/EVA)-laminated film is employed to protect the sensor from unexpected shear forces on the skin surface. The sensor exhibits great sensitivity (53.99/MPa), high resolution (less than 0.3 kPa), wide detecting range (0.3 kPa to 1 MPa), desirable robustness, and excellent repeatability (1000 cycles). With the assistance of the proposed pressure sensor, vital cardiovascular conditions can be accurately monitored, including heart rate, respiration rate, pulse wave velocity, and blood pressure. Compared to other sensors based on self-supporting 2D materials, this sensor can endure more complex environments and has enormous application potential for the medical community.

A single-end adaptive-optics (AO) module is experimentally demonstrated to mitigate the emulated atmospheric turbulence effects in a bi-directional quantum communication link, which employs orbital angular momentum (OAM) for data encoding. A classical Gaussian beam is used as a probe to detect the turbulence-induced wavefront distortion in the forward direction of the link. Based on the detected wavefront distortion, an AO system located on one end of the link is used to simultaneously compensate for the forward and backward channels. Specifically, with emulated turbulence and when the probe is turned on, the mode purity of photons carrying OAM l=1 is improved by ~ 21 % with AO mitigation. We also measured the performance when encoding data using OAM {l=-1,+2} and {l=-2,+1} in the forward and backward channels, respectively, at 10 Mbit/s per channel with one photon per pulse on average. For this case, we found that the AO system could reduce the turbulence effects increased quantum-symbol-error-rate (QSER) by ~ 76 % and ~ 74 %, for both channels in the uni-directional and bi-directional cases, respectively. Similar QSER improvement is observed for the opposite direction channels in the bi-directional case.

Recent studies in oncology have addressed the importance of detecting circulating tumor cell clusters because circulating tumor cell clusters might survive and metastasize more easily than single circulating tumor cells. Signals with larger peak widths detected by in vivo flow cytometer (IVFC) have been used to identify cell clusters in previous studies. However, the accuracy of this criterion might be greatly degraded by variance in blood flow and the rolling behaviors of circulating tumor cells. Here, we propose a criterion and algorithm to distinguish cell clusters from single cells. In this work, we first used area-based and volume-based models for single fluorescent cells. Simulating each model, we analyzed the corresponding morphology of IVFC signals from cell clusters. According to the Rayleigh criterion, the valley between two adjacent peak signals from two distinguishable cells should be lower than 73.5% of the peak values. A novel signal processing algorithm for IVFC was developed based on this criterion. The results showed that cell clusters can be reliably identified using our proposed algorithm. Intravital imaging was also performed to further support our algorithm. With enhanced accuracy, IVFC is a powerful tool to study circulating cell clusters.

ABSTRACT: Background: This study seeks to analyze risk factors associated with loss to follow up (LTF) after pin pull in pediatric patients with operatively treated supracondylar humerus fractures (SCHF). Methods: A retrospective cohort study of patients under 18 years with operative SCHF from 2010 to 2020 was conducted. Factors of interest included LTF, age, race, language, distance to the hospital, Gartland fracture type, and Social Deprivation Index (SDI) by ZIP code. Univariate logistic regression was performed for each independent variable and significant variables were additionally analyzed with multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: Six hundred ninety-eight patients were included in the study. LTF was 27.8% (194/698). There was a significant difference in LTF between White and non-White (21.5% vs 31.8%, P = .003) patients. LTF patients had higher mean SDI scores by ZIP code (59.8 vs 45.7, P
