Abstract The olfactory system can generate unique sensory memories of various odorous molecules, guiding emotional and cognitive decisions. However, most existing electronic noses remain constrained to momentary concentration, failing to trigger specific memories for different smells. Here, we report an artificial olfactory memory system utilizing conductive metal-organic frameworks (Ce-HHTP) that integrates sensing and memory and exhibits short- and long-term memory responses to alcohols and aldehydes. Experiments and theoretical calculations show that distinct memories are derived from the specific combinations of Ce-HHTP with O atoms in different guest. An unmanned aircraft equipped with this system realized the sensory memories in established areas. Moreover, the fusion of portable detection boxes and wearable flexible electrodes demonstrated the immense potential in off-site pollution monitoring and health management. This work represents an artificial olfactory memory system with two specific sensory memories under simultaneous conditions, laying the foundation for bionic design with qualities of human olfactory memory.

Abstract Aims To present a case series of 11 rare uterine tumors resembling ovarian sex cord tumors (UTROSCTs), and review the literature on this topic to offer up-to-date treatment management for UTROSCTs. Method Eight cases from Fujian Cancer Hospital between January 2017 and May 2023 and three patients from Fujian Union Hospital between October 2012 and October 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. All cases were pathologically confirmed as UTROSCTs by two senior and experienced pathologists. Clinical behaviors, medical data, histopathological features, therapy approaches, and survival outcomes were discussed. Results The median age at initial diagnosis was 53 years (29–70 years). 3 (27.3%) patients were under 40. Seven cases presented with abnormal vaginal bleeding, one with menstrual disorder, one with abnormal vaginal secretion, and two patients were accidentally found by physical examination without any symptoms. Three patients were initially misdiagnosed with endometrial cancer by MRI. Curettage was performed in all cases. Nine of them were well diagnosed by routine curettage, except for two samples, which were identified after surgery. Immunohistochemical biomarkers, such as CD99, Desmin, WT-1, CK, Vimentin, SMA, α-Inhibin, Ki67, CD56, ER, PR, and CR, tend to be positive in UTRO SCs patients. Six patients underwent hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Two cases received a radical hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, and omentum dissection. Three UTROSCTs were under observation after mass resection. The median PFS was 24 months (range 1–125 months). Conclusion UTROSCT is a rare mesenchymal tumor with low malignant potential. Treatment modalities should be carefully considered to balance the therapy outcomes and patient needs. Surgery conservative management might be suitable for young women with fertility desires.

In order to clarify the effect of mixed lubrication methods on the oil flow and power loss of the gearbox, this study adopts a high-precision moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method to investigate the lubrication of the gearbox under the joint influence of splash lubrication and oil injection lubrication. The accuracy of the numerical method to calculate the churning torque was verified by the constructed test rig. The effects of rotational speed, immersion depth, injection volume rate, and oil injection angle were analyzed and evaluated for lubrication. The results show that better lubrication can be achieved with relatively small churning torques by using a hybrid lubrication method. This provides some references for engineering applications of gearboxes.

To investigate the lubrication characteristics in high-speed train gearboxes, a two-stage herringbone gearbox with an idle gear was analyzed. The lubricant flow and distribution were shown using the moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method. A liquid film flow model was brought in to enhance the non-slip wall boundary conditions, enabling MPS to predict the film flow characteristics. This study investigates the influence of gear rotating speed, lubricant volume, and temperature on lubricant flow, liquid film distribution, lubrication state in the meshing zone, and churning power loss. The results indicate that lubrication characteristics depend on the splashing effect of rotating gears and lubricant fluidity. Increasing gear rotating speed and lubricant temperature can improve liquid film distribution on the inner wall, increase lubricant volume, and thus enhance film thickness. The lubricant particles in the meshing zone correlate positively with the gear rotating speed and lubricant volume, correlate negatively with a temperature above 20 °C, and decrease notably at low temperatures. Churning power loss mainly comes from the output gear. As lubricant volume and gear rotating speed increase, churning torque and power loss increase. Above 20 °C, viscosity decreases, reducing power loss; low temperatures lessen lubricant fluidity, reducing churning power loss.

Abstract Understanding the responses of landfalling tropical cyclones to a changing climate has been a topic of great interest and research. Among them, the recently reported slowdown of tropical cyclone landfall decay in a warming climate engenders controversy. Here, the global climatology of landfall decay, based on the tropical cyclone best-track data available, reveals that the reported trends are uncertain and not universal, but spatial, temporal, data, and methodology dependent such that any claim of a climate trend could be misleading at present. The effective area of moisture supply from the ocean, most likely determined by the landfalling track modes, is demonstrated to be an important factor for the decay. This study provides timely essential clarifications of the current contentious understanding.

Sea surface temperature (SST) is an important variable in the study of ocean boundary layers and heat exchange. The accurate simulation and measurement of skin effects are vital to air–sea model processing and satellite SST retrieval. Shipboard measurements from eleven cruises in the Northwest Pacific between August 2015 and October 2018 were used to estimate the cool skin effect and compare model results. The temperature difference ΔT between the sea surface skin temperature (SSTskin), as measured by an infrared radiometer, and the sea surface depth temperature (SSTdepth) at around 4 meters showed a mean difference and a standard deviation of the same 0.2 K, with a total of 5-min 39909 measurements. Both daytime and nighttime ΔT values were compared to physical model simulations and were found to have relatively larger mean values. A set of new coefficients for an exponential parameterization of the cool skin effect was derived in the research area, which performed well in comparison to previous empirical models. In nighttime observations from two summer cruises, the reverse process of heat flux transfer from the air to the sea in the form of a warm skin was distinguished. There were 667 positive ΔT values out of the 1917 nighttime observations, with magnitudes ranging from around 0 to 0.3 K. A high proportion of the cases of the warm skin phenomenon occurred when the air was very humid and much warmer than the sea surface.

Space probes are always obstructed by floating objects in the atmosphere (clouds, haze, rain, etc.) during imaging, resulting in the loss of a significant amount of detailed information in remote sensing images and severely reducing the quality of the remote sensing images. To address the problem of detailed information loss in remote sensing images, we propose an end-to-end detail enhancement network to directly remove haze in remote sensing images, restore detailed information of the image, and improve the quality of the image. In order to enhance the detailed information of the image, we designed a multi-scale detail enhancement unit and a stepped attention detail enhancement unit, respectively. The former extracts multi-scale information from images, integrates global and local information, and constrains the haze to enhance the image details. The latter uses the attention mechanism to adaptively process the uneven haze distribution in remote sensing images from three dimensions: deep, middle and shallow. It focuses on effective information such as haze and high frequency to further enhance the detailed information of the image. In addition, we embed the designed parallel normalization module in the network to further improve the dehazing performance and robustness of the network. Experimental results on the SateHaze1k and HRSD datasets demonstrate that our method effectively handles remote sensing images obscured by various levels of haze, restores the detailed information of the images, and outperforms the current state-of-the-art haze removal methods.

Although mass spectrometry (MS) has its unique advantages in speed, specificity and sensitivity, its application in quantitative chiral analysis aimed to determine the proportions of multiple chiral isomers is still a challenge. Herein, we present an artificial neural network (ANN) based approach for quantitatively analyzing multiple chiral isomers from their ultraviolet photodissociation mass spectra. Tripeptide of GYG and iodo-L-tyrosine have been applied as chiral references to fulfill the relative quantitative analysis of four chiral isomers of two dipeptides of L/DHisL/DAla and L/DAspL/DPhe, respectively. The results show that the network can be well-trained with limited sets, and have a good performance in testing sets. This study shows the potential of the new method in rapid quantitative chiral analysis aimed at practical applications, with much room for improvement in the near future, including selecting better chiral references and improving machine learning methods.

With the emerging wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductor development, the increasing power density and efficiency of power electronic converters may cause more switching oscillation, electromagnetic interference noise, and additional power loss, further increasing the probability of device failure. Therefore, determining and quantifying the failure of a metal-oxide-semiconductor-field-effect transistor (MOSFET), which assembled using WBG semiconductor in some applications, is crucial to improving the reliability of a power converter. This study proposes a novel failure quantitative assessment approach based on MOSFET parasitic parameters. According to the two-port network theory, MOSFET is equivalent to some second-order RLC circuits composed of independent inductances, capacitances, and resistances in series. Then, the frequency-domain impedance associated with the physical failure of MOSFET is identified through frequency domain reflectometry. Accelerated aging and bond wires cut-off experiments are employed to obtain various quality states of the MOSFET device. Result shows that the MOSFET quality level and its number of bond wire lift-offs can be quantified effectively. Drain-to-source on-resistance (RDS(on)) that normally represents the MOSFET quality shows a positive linear function relationship on drain-to-source parasitic resistance (RD + RS) during the quality degradation proceeding. This finding matches with the correlation established between RDS (on) and RD + RS in theory. Meanwhile, source parasitic inductance (LS) increases with the severity of bond wires faults, and even the slight fault shows a high sensitivity. The proposed approach would be an effective quality screening technology for power semiconductor devices without power on treatment, which can effectively avoid the impact of junction temperature and test conditions (current and voltage) on test results, and does not need to design additional test circuits. The test frequency range we used in this approach was 10–300 MHz, which to some extent is suitable for providing an on-line quality monitoring technology for high-frequency WBG power devices manufacturing.

ObjectivesParkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with the manifestation of motor symptoms and non-motor symptoms. Previous studies have indicated the role of several transmembrane (TMEM) protein family genes in PD pathogenesis.Materials and MethodsIn order to better investigate the genetic role of PD-related TMEM protein family genes in PD, including TMEM230, TMEM59, TMEM108, TMEM163, TMEM175, and TMEM229B, 1,917 sporadic early onset PD (sEOPD) or familial PD (FPD) patients and 1,652 healthy controls were analyzed by whole-exome sequencing (WES) while 1,962 sporadic late-onset PD (sLOPD) and 1,279 healthy controls were analyzed by whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Rare and common variants for each gene were included in the analysis.ResultsOne hundred rare damaging or loss of function variants of six genes were found at the threshold of MAF < 0.1%. Three rare Dmis variants of TMEM230 were specifically identified in PD. Rare missense variants of TMEM59 were statistically significantly associated with PD in the WES cohort, indicating the role of TMEM59 in FPD and sEOPD. Rare missense variants of TMEM108 were suggestively associated with PD in the WGS cohort, indicating the potential role of TMEM108 in sLOPD. The rare variant of the other three genes and common variants of six genes were not significantly associated with PD.ConclusionWe performed a large case-control study to systematically investigate the role of several PD-related TMEM protein family genes in PD. We identified three PD-specific variants in TMEM230, the significant association of TMEM59 with FPD, and sEOPD and the suggestive association of TMEM108 with sLOPD.

Abstract Background miR-431-5p is dysregulated in various cancers and plays an important function in the development of cancer. However, its role in fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remains to be understood. Methods Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to detect the relative expression of miR-431-5p in synovial tissues and FLSs. Cell proliferation assays helped examine RA FLS proliferation. Flow cytometry was performed to determine apoptosis and cell cycle progression in RA FLSs. We used dual-luciferase assays to determine the correlation between miR-431-5p and its putative target, X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP). Quantitative real-time PCR and western blotting were used to measure XIAP levels in synovial tissues and transfected RA FLSs. Results miR-431-5p was downregulated in synovial tissues and FLSs of patients with RA. Upregulation of miR-431-5p prohibited cell proliferation and the G0/G1-to-S phase transition but promoted apoptosis in RA FLSs, while miR-431-5p inhibition showed the opposite results. miR-431-5p directly targeted XIAP in RA FLSs and reversely correlated with XIAP levels in synovial tissues. Notably, XIAP silencing partially restored the effects of miR-431-5p inhibition in RA FLSs. Conclusion miR-431-5p regulates cell proliferation, apoptosis, and cell cycle of RA FLSs by targeting XIAP, suggesting its potential in the treatment of RA.

The Aquila Optimizer (AO) is a new bio-inspired meta-heuristic algorithm inspired by Aquila’s hunting behavior. Adaptive Aquila Optimizer Combining Niche Thought with Dispersed Chaotic Swarm (NCAAO) is proposed to address the problem that although the Aquila Optimizer (AO) has a strong global exploration capability, it has an insufficient local exploitation capability and a slow convergence rate. First, to improve the diversity of populations in the algorithm and the uniformity of distribution in the search space, DLCS chaotic mapping is used to generate the initial populations so that the algorithm is in a better exploration state. Then, to improve the search accuracy of the algorithm, an adaptive adjustment strategy of de-searching preferences is proposed. The exploration and development phases of the NCAAO algorithm are effectively balanced by changing the search threshold and introducing the position weight parameter to adaptively adjust the search process. Finally, the idea of small habitats is effectively used to promote the exchange of information between groups and accelerate the rapid convergence of groups to the optimal solution. To verify the optimization performance of the NCAAO algorithm, the improved algorithm was tested on 15 standard benchmark functions, the Wilcoxon rank sum test, and engineering optimization problems to test the optimization-seeking ability of the improved algorithm. The experimental results show that the NCAAO algorithm has better search performance and faster convergence speed compared with other intelligent algorithms.

The sea surface temperature (SST) is a crucial parameter system in climate monitoring. Satellite remote sensing is currently the most common approach for measuring long-term and large-area sea surface temperatures. The SST data measured by the satellite radiometer include the sea surface skin temperature (SSTskin) at a depth of approximately 10 μm. Satellite remote sensing measurement data must be compared and validated with on-site measured data. There are various solutions for on-site measuring instruments; the essential components are usually infrared radiation sensors with radiation output. This paper uses an ordinary integrated infrared thermometer without a radiation output function to remotely measure the sea surface temperature to achieve a high-precision measurement. The scheme of integrating infrared thermometers to measure the sea surface temperature is investigated in this paper. Based on Planck’s formula, the bidirectional conversion relationship between temperature and radiation in a certain band is established. The experimental system introduced in this paper uses an integrated infrared thermometer to measure the small blackbody and the target in a cyclic measurement system. We combine it with the sea surface emissivity characteristics and eliminate the influence of sky background radiation on the sea surface to obtain the actual amount of radiation on the sea surface, from which we obtain the actual radiation amount on the sea surface. Accurate SST can be calculated from the actual amount of radiation at the sea surface. The temperature measurement accuracy can reach 0.1 K, allowing it to meet on-site temperature measurement requirements, as well as the comparison measurement requirements confirmed by satellite remote sensing on-site data. There are relatively few products available for sensors with a temperature measurement accuracy of 0.1 K on the market, and temperature measurement equipment with a temperature measurement accuracy of 0.1 K is relatively expensive. Cost is one of the important factors to consider when using in bulk, especially as global warming increases the need for ocean monitoring. The scheme proposed in this paper is beneficial to reduce the volume and weight of measuring instruments, reduce the cost, and promote the large-scale combined application of sea surface temperature change monitoring.

At the intersection of research areas on health and employment, little attention has been paid on employment quality among people living with HIV (PLWH). The objective of the current study is to identify critical factors and empirically examine their effects on employment quality among PLWH. Based on the social-ecological perspective, we identified negative self-image, workplace discrimination, social support, and policy support as critical factors associated with employment quality among PLWH. Thereafter, a questionnaire survey was conducted to gather information from 339 employed PLWH in China. Hierarchical regression analyses were further performed to analyze the effects of the identified factors on employment quality among PLWH. We obtained three main findings. First, negative self-image and workplace discrimination are detrimental to employment quality among PLWH; whereas social support and policy support are conducive to their employment quality. Second, older, male, and highly educated PLWH can better leverage the undesirable effects of negative self-image and workplace discrimination on employment quality compared with their peers. Third, male, and highly educated PLWH can better utilize social support and policy support to advance employment quality compared with their peers. However, the employment quality effects of the identified factors did not differ by marital status. Our findings provided some useful implications for PLWH, employers, community service providers, and policy makers to promote employment quality among PLWH.

The pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease (PD) is not well established. The rs894278 polymorphism of SNCA has been associated with PD. We performed this study to investigate the relationship between rs894278 and PD status on resting-state brain activity, by analyzing the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF). A total of 81 PD patients and 64 healthy controls were recruited. Disease severity and PD stage were evaluated in PD patients using the unified Parkinson’s disease rating scale (UPDRS) and the Hoehn and Yahr (HY) scale, while the cognitive function of all participants was assessed using the mini-mental state examination (MMSE). All participants were genotyped for the rs894278 SNP and underwent a resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging scan. We found that the ALFF values of PD patients in the lingual gyrus and left caudate were lower than those of HCs; and the ALFF values for the right fusiform of participants with G allele were lower than those of participants without G allele. And we further revealed higher ALFF values in bilateral fusiform in rs894278-G carriers than in rs894278-G non-carriers in the PD group and lower ALFF values in bilateral fusiform in rs894278-G carriers than in rs894278-G non-carriers in the HC group. Our findings show that rs894278 and PD status interactively affect the brain activity of PD patients and HCs, and changes in the brain connectomes may play a key role in the pathogenesis of PD. Thus, our work sheds light on the mechanism underlying PD pathogenesis.

Low-level wind shear is usually to be a rapidly changing meteorological phenomenon that cannot be ignored in aviation security service by affecting the air speed of landing and take-off aircrafts. The lidar team in Ocean University of China (OUC) carried out the long term particular researches on the low-level wind shear identification and regional wind shear inducement search at Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) from 2015 to 2020 by operating several pulsed coherent Doppler lidar (PCDL) systems. On account of the improved glide path scanning strategy and virtual multiple wind anemometers based on the rang height indicator (RHI) modes, the small-scale meteorological phenomenon along the glide path and/or runway center line direction can be captured. In this paper, the device configuration, scanning strategies, and results of the observation data are proposed. The algorithms to identify the low-level wind shear based on the reconstructed headwind profiles data have been tested and proved based on the lidar data obtained from December 2018 to January 2019. High spatial resolution observation data at vertical direction are utilized to study the regional wind shear inducement at the 36L end of BCIA under strong northwest wind conditions.

Real-time intraoperative optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging of blood vessels after anastomosis operation can provide important information the vessel, such as patency, flow speed, and thrombosis morphology. Due to the strong scattering and absorption effect of blood, normal OCT imaging suffers from the problem of incomplete cross-sectional view of the vessel under investigation when the diameter is large. In this work, we present a novel cooperative three-view imaging spectral domain optical coherence tomography system for intraoperative exposed vascular imaging. Two more side views (left view and right view) were realized through a customized sample arm optical design and corresponding mechanical design and fabrication, which could generate cross-sectional images from three circumferential view directions to achieve a larger synthetic field of view (FOV). For each view, the imaging depth was 6.7 mm (in air) and the lateral scanning range was designed to be 3 mm. Therefore, a shared synthetic rectangle FOV of 3 mm × 3 mm was achieved through cooperative three view scanning. This multi-view imaging method can meet the circumferential imaging demands of vessels with an outer diameter less than 3 mm. Both phantom tube and rat vessel imaging confirmed the increased system FOV performance. We believe the intraoperative application of this cooperative three-imaging optical coherence tomography for objective vascular anastomosis evaluation can benefit patient outcomes in the future.

Single crystal of Sm0.5Tb0.5FeO3 was grown by an optical floating zone method. The spin reorientation transition behavior (Γ2 → Γ24 → Γ4) is observed in the temperature range from 150 to 250 K. The dynamics of spin reorientation transition is studied by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). FM mode was only discovered when temperature is below 55 K. And the FM mode resonant frequency increases from 0.216 THz to 0.268 THz with temperature deceasing from 55 K to 39 K. The AFM mode resonant frequency is fixed at 0.542 THz except in the very low temperature range. Our results demonstrate that THz-TDS is an effective means to study the dynamical iron ions SRT in RFeO3.

Carbon dots (CDs), as emerging luminescent materials, have attracted extensive attention from researchers because of their excellent optical properties. However, most reported CDs currently exhibit only a single luminescent color, and research on achieving multicolor solid-state fluorescence (SSF) and multicolor afterglow with CDs is relatively limited. In recent years, increasing research on multicolor SSF and multicolor afterglow CDs has greatly expanded the potential of CDs in various application fields. In this review, we review the research progress on multicolor luminescent CDs from three aspects: synthesis methods, mechanisms and applications. In particular, methods for realizing multicolor luminescence of CDs are summarized in detail, and the multicolor luminescence mechanisms of different realization methods are discussed, which cover multiple aspects, such as element doping, adjustment of the reaction parameters, surface state modulation, CDs with multiple luminescence centers, energy transfer, and matrix assistance. Then, we introduce the applications of multicolor luminescent CDs in the fields of fingerprint identification, optoelectronic devices, sensors, information encryption and advanced anticounterfeiting. Finally, we present and discuss the challenges and developments of multicolor SSF and multicolor afterglow CDs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
