The article discusses the concept of translanguaging, which refers to the use of multiple languages and language features to maximize communication. While research on translanguaging primarily focuses on K-12 learners and higher education contexts, limited research exists on adult language and literacy education. The article emphasizes the potential of translanguaging to support adult learners' literacy skills, empowerment, and language legitimization. It also highlights the need for further research and its potential to promote social justice and equity in adult language classrooms globally.

This paper seeks to investigate how, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the work proposals directed by the government unfolded in the pedagogical practices of basic education teachers in Paraná/Brazil in emergency remote teaching. For that, the case study was used as a method, with a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data. The qualitative analysis of the regulations took place through descending hierarchical classification (CHD), word cloud generator and similitude analysis, as well as through the descriptive analysis of the data from the application of a questionnaire to 78 basic education teachers. The results showed a gap between the main regulations issued by the federal and state public authorities that affect basic education in Paraná in the emergency period due to COVID-19 and the teaching practice of teachers, as well as the problems faced in the pedagogical/administrative support that these teachers received. Finally, the information presented in this study proved to be significant to understand the complexity of the educational problems that were intensified and others that emerged, due to remote teaching.

Although incarcerated individuals have committed potentially 'immoral' crimes, many are also parents, and need to foster their children's moral development. As such, incarcerated parents occupy a paradoxical position: they are labelled as morally deviant yet simultaneously expected to provide moral guidance for their children. This study explores the concurrent rifts and junctures between incarceration, parenting, and morality by revealing how incarcerated fathers at a Pennsylvania state correctional institution (SCI) used a family literacy program to offer moral instruction to their young children. Moreover, it examines the seeming paradox of how incarcerated parents viewed as morally culpable seek to shape their children's moral development while serving time for their own past actions. We find that although scholars and the public have historically perceived incarcerated individuals as lacking moral reasoning, there are multiple examples of incarcerated fathers acting as moral educators for their children.

In response to rising parental incarceration, some correctional facilities and outside organizations offer family literacy programs for parents in prison. However, research on these correctional education initiatives is scant. This paper uses qualitative data to analyze how 11 fathers in a rural Pennsylvania prison were involved in their children's literacy, learning, and education before and during incarceration and through the Read to Your Child/Grandchild (RYCG) program. Before RYCG, most fathers had taken steps such as reading to children, teaching reading and math, attending parent-teacher conferences, helping with homework, and singing and rhyming--and then sought to continue supporting their children's learning from within prison. Fathers used RYCG materials (video-recorded book reading, children's book, scrapbook) to emphasize the importance of education, literacies, and numeracy. They also created personalized scrapbooks that cultivated their children's literate abilities and cognitive, academic, and socio-emotional development. This research contributes to the nascent literature on family literacy for incarcerated parents.

This article outlines the Goodling Institute for Research in Family Literacy's findings from a William Penn Foundation--funded multiyear evaluation of four family literacy programs in Philadelphia. Drawing from qualitative research findings from 2019 to 2021, the article details the creative ways in which these programs implemented remote instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic to continue providing family literacy services to families in Philadelphia. It describes changes in communication between instructors and families and highlights the increased focus on technology, digital literacy, and mental health concerns that occurred during this unprecedented time. The difficulties that programs, instructors, and families faced and the innovative ways they were handled by family literacy programs are also described. Finally, the article draws on these findings to discuss lessons learned from this sudden shift to remote instruction and describes the inventive practices that can be implemented in other adult and family literacy programs.

In response to rising parental incarceration rates, some correctional facilities now offer family literacy and read-aloud programmes to strengthen parent-child bonds. However, the technologies used in these programmes -- including older technologies such as audio and video recordings -- have received little attention. Parents in the Read to Your Child/Grandchild (RYCG) programme at Pennsylvania state prisons are video recorded reading a book for their child; the book and video recording are then mailed to the child. Drawing on interview and observational data with 11 fathers at a rural prison, this study examines how fathers perceived the possibilities (affordances) of the multimodal videos. RYCG provided the only opportunity to send videos outside the prison. Moreover, the video enabled children to see their parents despite physical distance, captured a more 'lifelike' portrait of parents, was lasting and repeatable, and created another line of parent-child interaction. The perceived affordances of video reflected the restrictive prison setting and the desires of incarcerated fathers, including the desire to be recognised as a father and to show their children that they cared. Fathers' insights underscore the value of examining how people in marginalised educational sites use outmoded, receding technologies to forge new connections with loved ones.

This study is one of the few on online teaching and learning in family literacy and, to the knowledge of the authors, the first on emergency remote instruction in a family literacy programme during the COVID-19 pandemic. This article examines how the Goodling Institute for Research in Family Literacy at The Pennsylvania State University in the United States has responded to the pandemic by converting its face-to-face family literacy classes into emergency remote instruction using online platforms. Serving eight immigrant families in 2019-2020 who live in the State College area in central Pennsylvania, the "Family Pathways" programme includes adult education, parent education and interactive parent-child literacy activities. The article discusses how teachers created online learning opportunities for parents and children to learn together, the strategies and resources instructors used to teach remotely, how challenges such as discomfort with technology were addressed, and what has been learned from the experience. Although COVID-19 presents unprecedented challenges for educators and learners in family literacy programmes more broadly, it has also compelled instructors in this particular programme to use remote instruction creatively and has revealed the critical importance of family literacy programmes as an educational support system for low-income and immigrant families.
