This presentation will focus on recent efforts to develop space and planetary sciences in Africa, particularly work on African impact structures and support for NASA space missions (New Horizons, Lucy) to explore asteroids through stellar occultation campaigns conducted in Senegal., Cette presentation s’intéressera aux récents efforts de développement des sciences de l’espace et des planètes en Afrique, et en particulier les travaux s’intéressants aux structures d’impacts africaines et au soutien des missions spatiales NASA (New Horizons, Lucy) d’exploration des astéroïdes par des campagnes d’occultation stellaire menées au Sénégal.

Context. Until recently, camera networks designed for monitoring fireballs worldwide were not fully automated, implying that in case of a meteorite fall, the recovery campaign was rarely immediate. This was an important limiting factor as the most fragile - hence precious - meteorites must be recovered rapidly to avoid their alteration. Aims. The Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON) scientific project was designed to overcome this limitation. This network comprises a fully automated camera and radio network deployed over a significant fraction of western Europe and a small fraction of Canada. As of today, it consists of 150 cameras and 25 European radio receivers and covers an area of about 1.5 × 10km. Methods. The FRIPON network, fully operational since 2018, has been monitoring meteoroid entries since 2016, thereby allowing the characterization of their dynamical and physical properties. In addition, the level of automation of the network makes it possible to trigger a meteorite recovery campaign only a few hours after it reaches the surface of the Earth. Recovery campaigns are only organized for meteorites with final masses estimated of at least 500 g, which is about one event per year in France. No recovery campaign is organized in the case of smaller final masses on the order of 50 to 100 g, which happens about three times a year; instead, the information is delivered to the local media so that it can reach the inhabitants living in the vicinity of the fall. Results. Nearly 4000 meteoroids have been detected so far and characterized by FRIPON. The distribution of their orbits appears to be bimodal, with a cometary population and a main belt population. Sporadic meteors amount to about 55% of all meteors. A first estimate of the absolute meteoroid flux (mag < -5; meteoroid size ≥∼1 cm) amounts to 1250/yr/10km. This value is compatible with previous estimates. Finally, the first meteorite was recovered in Italy (Cavezzo, January 2020) thanks to the PRISMA network, a component of the FRIPON science project., FRIPON was initiated by funding from ANR (grant N.13- BS05-0009-03), carried by the Paris Observatory, Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris-Saclay University and Institut Pythéas (LAM-CEREGE). International audience; Dans un effort de synthèse pour capitaliser les résultats de la recherche sur la productivité des savanes à l’échelle régionale, une école-chercheurs, baptisée Savafor, s’est rassemblée à Bamako au Mali, du 19 au 27 octobre 2005. Elle a réuni plus de 20 participants de la sous-région autour de communications orales, de débats (entre chercheurs et avec les acteurs du développement), de travaux communs sur des jeux de données et de sorties sur le terrain. Cette école-chercheurs avait deux objectifs :▪ Faire le point sur les méthodes pour estimer la biomasse et la productivité des formations savanicoles, en confrontant les expériences respectives de chercheurs de différents pays de l’Afrique de l’Ouest et centrale.▪ Favoriser une synergie, à l’échelle régionale, entre les chercheurs travaillant sur le sujet. Le présent article vise à rendre compte des principales conclusions obtenues lors de cette écolechercheurs.

L'amélioration de la gestion de la matière organique est une voie possible de l'intensification de la production agro-pastorale des espaces conjuguant agriculture et élevage en zone soudanienne. Cet article s'appuie sur une étude de cas d'un terroir agro-pastoral de Haute-Casamance (Sénégal) et une revue bibliographique. Il présente : les sources potentielles de production organique : biomasse aérienne et souterraine, herbacée et ligneuse, des cultures, des jachères et des forêts ; les évolutions, contrôlées (alimentation humaine et animale, construction, énergie) ou non (incendie, activité faunique du sol) de la matière organique au sein du terroir. La matière organique est conçue en tant que ressource à part entière, à la fois bien et moyen de production. Dans la région, la jachère est avec la fumure animale l'un des deux outils de gestion organique de la fertilité des sols. Le maintien ou la restauration de la fertilité par ces pratiques est considéré comme la conséquence de l'établissement d'un flux significatif de matière organique, et donc d'énergie et de minéraux, à travers la parcelle. L'originalité de l'étude tient également à ce qu'elle intègre les échelles de l'exploitation et du terroir, qui, seules, peuvent tenir compte des pratiques très collectives de la gestion des terres, des animaux et de la fertilité afférente. Introduction: The Velingara depression, located in the southern part of Senegal, consists in a near-circular basin of about 40 km of diameter, bordered by a subtle rim up to only 60 m above the altitude of the basin. The central part of the depression is occupied by rice fields, marshes and a lake. Eocene and post-Eocene deposits of sediments fill the depression, while lateritic cuirass is exposed at the rim. There are almost no outcrops of basement rocks be - low the recent sediments, except in an irrigation channel where quartz veins and mica schists have been reported [1]. Using satellite imagery and a compilation of other various old data (collected samples, shallow drillings, local resis - tivity surveys, regional gravity data), previous studies [1, 2] have postulated that Velingara corresponds to a buried complex impact crater with a central uplift. The used data are difficult to interpret and sometimes not available. Some PDFs seem to have been observed on samples, but again, reports are hard to confirm. The Bouguer gravity data stored by the Bureau Gravimétrique International (BGI) do not really show a significant anomaly unveiling a circular structure, and indicate a WNW-ESE regional gradient linked to the presence of the thick sedimentary Casamance basin to the west, and to the crystalline basement rocks of Guinea-Bissau to the south. No airborne magnetic data were acquired in the area (only outside, in Casamance and SE of Senegal). We did not have access to cited electrical resistivity local cross-sections [2], reporting shallow resistive blocks which may indicate uplifted basement rocks. Methology: In the framework of an international program between France and Senegal, a new geophysical survey has been performed in March 2022, with the aim to identify the best place for a possible drilling in the future. Ground gravity and magnetic field measurements were acquired at about 2 km spacing (sometimes 500 m in the central part, sometimes more than 2 km outside) within the depression and crossing the ring. A Scintrex CG-5 gravimeter was used for gravity measurements, accompanied by an Emlid Reachview RS-2 GPS mobile antenna. Another RS-2 GPS antenna was used as GPS reference base station during each day of prospection. Post-Processing Kinematic (PPK) treatment was then applied to these GPS data to get circa 4 cm resolution on the vertical positioning of each gravity measurements. All classical corrections were then performed to the raw gravity measurements to calculate the complete Bouguer gravity anomaly using 2400 kg m
-3 as density of regional rocks. Magnetic field measurements have been acquired using a MMPOS Overhauser magnetometer. The anomaly was computed after substraction of the ambient regional field measured in parallel by a Geometrics G856 base station. The Total Magnetic Intensity anomaly was then reduced to the pole. Preliminary results: The Bouguer gravity residual signal clearly shows a circa 15 mGal negative circular anomaly centered nearby the lake, with a diameter of about 10 km. Outside this negative signal, we do not see any other circular signals. It means that the topographical ring is much larger than the gravity anomaly. The magnetic field anomaly map reveals significant anomalies of about 50 nT, which may argue in favor of the presence of shallow buried crystalline rocks. Discussion: these results confirm the presence of a low density formation in the center of the Velingara depres - sion. They could be brecciated / fractured formations of crystalline (magnetic) basement, or post impact sediments. Modeling of the anomalies will be performed, in parallel to the drilling in the central part of the depression. Col - lected samples will be also searched for shock indicators. Importance of the Harvest Method on the Regeneration of Combretaceae in the Senegalese Groundnut Basin. In order to develop recommendations for sustainable management of key fuel wood resources in the Senegalese Groundnut Basin, different diameters and heights of harvesting were tested on Guiera senegalensis J.F. Gmel and Combretum glutinosum Perr. The experimental design is adapted to the usual local harvesting period (May) and to the traditional tools (machete). Three factors were studied: species, height (ground level (RT), 20 and 50 cm) and diameter (0-10 and 10-20 cm). For each species, each treatment is represented by 15 individuals. Results from field observations and analysis of variance on the number of stems and growth variables (height and diameter) suggest a high survival rate (100%), a higher number of stems at 20 and 50 cm cutting height, a slow height growth of stems from ground level stumps (RT), and a larger diameter growth of G. senegalensis. For sustainable management of the studied Combreteceae species in the Groundnut Basin, 20 cm cutting height of all individuals would be appropriate.

- Abstract
Context. Until recently, camera networks designed for monitoring fireballs worldwide were not fully automated, implying that in case of a meteorite fall, the recovery campaign was rarely immediate. This was an important limiting factor as the most fragile – hence precious – meteorites must be recovered rapidly to avoid their alteration. Aims. The Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON) scientific project was designed to overcome this limitation. This network comprises a fully automated camera and radio network deployed over a significant fraction of western Europe and a small fraction of Canada. As of today, it consists of 150 cameras and 25 European radio receivers and covers an area of about 1.5 × 106 km2. Methods. The FRIPON network, fully operational since 2018, has been monitoring meteoroid entries since 2016, thereby allowing the characterization of their dynamical and physical properties. In addition, the level of automation of the network makes it possible to trigger a meteorite recovery campaign only a few hours after it reaches the surface of the Earth. Recovery campaigns are only organized for meteorites with final masses estimated of at least 500 g, which is about one event per year in France. No recovery campaign is organized in the case of smaller final masses on the order of 50 to 100 g, which happens about three times a year; instead, the information is delivered to the local media so that it can reach the inhabitants living in the vicinity of the fall. Results. Nearly 4000 meteoroids have been detected so far and characterized by FRIPON. The distribution of their orbits appears to be bimodal, with a cometary population and a main belt population. Sporadic meteors amount to about 55% of all meteors. A first estimate of the absolute meteoroid flux (mag < –5; meteoroid size ≥~1 cm) amounts to 1250/yr/106 km

- Abstract
Context. Until recently, camera networks designed for monitoring fireballs worldwide were not fully automated, implying that in case of a meteorite fall, the recovery campaign was rarely immediate. This was an important limiting factor as the most fragile – hence precious – meteorites must be recovered rapidly to avoid their alteration. Aims. The Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON) scientific project was designed to overcome this limitation. This network comprises a fully automated camera and radio network deployed over a significant fraction of western Europe and a small fraction of Canada. As of today, it consists of 150 cameras and 25 European radio receivers and covers an area of about 1.5 × 106 km2. Methods. The FRIPON network, fully operational since 2018, has been monitoring meteoroid entries since 2016, thereby allowing the characterization of their dynamical and physical properties. In addition, the level of automation of the network makes it possible to trigger a meteorite recovery campaign only a few hours after it reaches the surface of the Earth. Recovery campaigns are only organized for meteorites with final masses estimated of at least 500 g, which is about one event per year in France. No recovery campaign is organized in the case of smaller final masses on the order of 50 to 100 g, which happens about three times a year; instead, the information is delivered to the local media so that it can reach the inhabitants living in the vicinity of the fall. Results. Nearly 4000 meteoroids have been detected so far and characterized by FRIPON. The distribution of their orbits appears to be bimodal, with a cometary population and a main belt population. Sporadic meteors amount to about 55% of all meteors. A first estimate of the absolute meteoroid flux (mag < –5; meteoroid size ≥~1 cm) amounts to 1250/yr/106 km
