ABSTRACT Computed tomography angiography (CTA) was performed under general anaesthesia on a 7‐month‐old toy poodle that was referred with the chief complaints of salivation and neurological symptoms. The CTA revealed a rare form of posthepatic portosystemic shunt (PSS) via the suspected persistent left umbilical vein communicating with the internal thoracic vein in addition to an azygos continuation of the caudal vena cava (CVC). The patient underwent surgery for partial ligation of PSS on Day 4 after the initial examination. On Day 71, after the initial examination, a second surgery was performed for complete ligation. Approximately 10 years have passed since the patient's second surgery, and he is still healthy, and generally in good condition. Although the morphology of the shunt in this case was unusual and was accompanied by an azygos continuation of the CVC, a favourable course of treatment was obtained by ligating the shunt vessel. This case report suggests that CTA can reveal the complex morphological characteristics like our case. Surgical treatment in this case resulted in favourable progress, similar to that in dogs with commonly observed extrahepatic PSS.

Abstract Multisensory integration plays an important role in the experience of the bodily self. Recently, the relationship between exteroception and interoception has been actively debated. The first evidence was a report that the susceptibility of the sense of ownership over a fake hand (i.e., illusory hand ownership: IHO) in the typical rubber hand illusion is negatively modulated by the accuracy of the heartbeat perception (i.e., cardiac interoceptive accuracy: CIA). If reliable, this would suggest an antagonism between the exteroceptive and interoceptive cues underlying the bodily self. However, some inconsistent data have been reported, raising questions about the robustness of the initial evidence. To investigate this robustness, we estimated the extent of the modulatory effect of CIA on IHO susceptibility by applying Bayesian hierarchical modeling to two independent datasets. Overall, our results did not support that IHO susceptibility is modulated by CIA. The present estimates with high uncertainty cannot exclude the hypothesis that the relationship between IHO susceptibility and CIA is so weak as to be negligible. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to reach a conclusion about the extent of the modulatory effect. These findings highlight the lack of robustness of key evidence supporting the “antagonism hypothesis”.

The present study investigated the effects of wearing a non-woven face mask and performing a calculation task, while walking, on gait pattern, breathlessness, and calculation performance. Twenty-one healthy adult males walked 4.0 km/h and 6.0 km/h on a treadmill with and without wearing a face mask. A calculation task using a smartphone was added to the gait task, and the participants were asked to perform two-digit addition calculation tasks displayed on the screen as quickly and accurately as possible. Heart rate, perceived exercise intensity, breathlessness, and cadence during gait tasks were measured. Although wearing the mask did not significantly affect heart rate or cadence during gait, breathlessness and perceived exercise intensity were significantly increased. When the calculation task was performed during gait, wearing the mask significantly decreased the correct answer rate, although the number of responses was not affected. Wearing the mask therefore reduced the calculation performance during gait. These results suggest that wearing a mask during gait may increase breathlessness and may worsen mental demands such as performing a calculation task, even if it does not affect physiological responses or gait patterns. As walking in daily life requires a variety of cognitive/mental demands, the impact of wearing a mask on the implementation of these demands may need to be considered.

IntroductionThis study aimed to describe the technique for the surgical repair of perineal hernia (PH) in dogs using a polypropylene mesh (PM) and to evaluate its outcomes.MethodsAll dogs were placed in the Trendelenburg position. Castration and caudal celiotomy for cystopexy and colopexy were performed as needed. Ipsilateral perianal incision was performed in the affected hernia side. A PM was formed a cone-shape with suturing and placed in hernial foramen. The PH was repaired with suturing between PH and pelvic diaphragm including the sacrotuberous ligament, internal obturator muscle, and external anal sphincter muscle. The medical records of all dogs were reviewed to evaluate signalment, perioperative findings, postoperative complications, and prognosis.ResultsOf the 22 dogs, 15 were intact, and 7 were previously neutered. The median age and body weight were 10 years and 6.8 kg, respectively. The PH reconstruction using a cone-shaped PM was feasible in all dogs. The median operative time was 60.5 min for unilateral PH and 109 min for bilateral PH. Major postoperative complications occurred in seven dogs (32%), and three dogs (14%) had a recurrence of PH. In the long-term (> 2 weeks) follow-up period, 16 dogs (73%) had an excellent prognosis.DiscussionOur study suggests that PH reconstruction surgery using a cone-shaped PM may be a viable treatment method for PH in dogs. Therefore, a cone-shaped PM could serve as an alternative treatment option for canine PH reconstruction.

Kullback–Leibler (KL) control enables efficient numerical methods for nonlinear optimal control problems. The crucial assumption of KL control is the full controllability of transition distributions. However, this assumption is often violated when the dynamics evolves in a continuous space. Consequently, applying KL control to problems with continuous spaces requires some approximation, which leads to the loss of the optimality. To avoid such an approximation, in this paper, we reformulate the KL control problem for continuous spaces so that it does not require unrealistic assumptions. The key difference between the original and reformulated KL control is that the former measures the control effort by the KL divergence between controlled and uncontrolled transition distributions while the latter replaces the uncontrolled transition by a noise-driven transition. We show that the reformulated KL control admits efficient numerical algorithms like the original one without unreasonable assumptions. Specifically, the associated value function can be computed by using a Monte Carlo method based on its path integral representation.

Abstract Known as metabolic flexibility, oxidized substrate is selected in response to changes in the nutritional state. Sleep imposes an extended duration of fasting, and oxidized substrates during sleep were assumed to progressively shift from carbohydrate to fat, thereby gradually decreasing the respiratory quotient (RQ). Contrary to this assumption, whole-room indirect calorimetry with improved time resolution revealed that RQ re-ascended prior to awakening, and nadir of RQ in non-obese young adults occurred earlier in women than men after bedtime. The transient decrease in RQ during sleep was blunted in metabolically inflexible men with smaller amplitude of diurnal rhythm in RQ. Similarly, the effect of 10 years difference in age on RQ became significant during sleep; the decrease in RQ during sleep was blunted in older subjects. Inter-individual difference in RQ become apparent during sleep, and it might serve as a window to gain insight into the early-stage pathogenesis of metabolic inflexibility.

Abstract Exercise can improve sleep by reducing sleep latency and increasing slow-wave sleep (SWS). Some studies, however, report adverse effects of exercise on sleep architecture, possibly due to a wide variety of experimental conditions used. We examined the effect of exercise on quality of sleep using standardized exercise parameters and novel analytical methods. In a cross-over intervention study we examined the effect of 60 min of vigorous exercise at 60% $$\dot{V}{\text{O}}_{2}$$ V ˙ O 2 max on the metabolic state, assessed by core body temperature and indirect calorimetry, and on sleep quality during subsequent sleep, assessed by self-reported quality of sleep and polysomnography. In a novel approach, envelope analysis was performed to assess SWS stability. Exercise increased energy expenditure throughout the following sleep phase. The subjective assessment of sleep quality was not improved by exercise. Polysomnography revealed a shorter rapid eye movement latency and reduced time spent in SWS. Detailed analysis of the sleep electro-encephalogram showed significantly increased delta power in SWS (N3) together with increased SWS stability in early sleep phases, based on delta wave envelope analysis. Although vigorous exercise does not lead to a subjective improvement in sleep quality, sleep function is improved on the basis of its effect on objective EEG parameters.

Extreme outliers of wind power fluctuation are a source of severe damage to power systems. In our previous work, we proposed a modelling framework, verified its usefulness via real data, and developed a model-based evaluation method of the impact of such extreme outliers. However, it has been a drawback that the obtained estimates of frequency fluctuation of power systems are sometimes excessively conservative for their practical use. To overcome this weakness, theory and methods for tightening the fluctuation estimates are investigated in this paper. This is done by applying a robust performance analysis method of a Lur'e system to the error analysis of stochastic linearization. The usefulness of our proposed method is shown through a load frequency control model.

The main purpose of this study is to examine gig workers in transportation sectors, especially focusing on workers in food delivery services, who had increased during the COVID-19 recession. By using a unique survey of 188 Uber Eats delivery persons in Japan conducted from October 2020 to January 2021, we analyze the features and labor supply behavior of the delivery persons who took the jobs during the COVID-19 recession. We found that more job losers, lower income earners and more manual workers, who are considered to be more negatively impacted by the pandemic, entered the food delivery service market during the recession. We also found that at least one-third of delivery persons worked at an hourly wage below the minimum wage, and those workers were highly concentrated in the workers who joined the market after the pandemic became severe. Based on the theory of compensating wage differentials, our analysis using hypothetical questions also found that such workers are more willing to accept jobs at lower hourly wages than those who started working at Uber Eats before COVID-19 was recognized, even under poor working conditions, such as downpours or fatigue. Our findings suggest that the gig economy, such as food delivery services, acts as an outlet for low-income and unemployed persons during recessions, indicating that such work may serve as a buffer to smooth income against business cycles. However, ample labor suppliers who are eager to take jobs with less money may exert additional downward pressure on wages during recessions.

The relationship between the onset of sweating (OS) and sweat lactate threshold (sLT) assessed using a novel sweat lactate sensor remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the implications of the OS on the sLT. Forty healthy men performed an incremental cycling test. We monitored the sweat lactate, blood lactate, and local sweating rates to determine the sLT, blood LT (bLT), and OS. We defined participants with the OS during the warm-up just before the incremental test as the early perspiration (EP) group and the others as the regular perspiration (RP) group. Pearson’s correlation coefficient analysis revealed that the OS was poorly correlated with the sLT, particularly in the EP group (EP group, r = 0.12; RP group, r = 0.56). Conversely, even in the EP group, the sLT was strongly correlated with the bLT (r = 0.74); this was also the case in the RP group (r = 0.61). Bland-Altman plots showed no bias between the mean sLT and bLT (mean difference: 19.3 s). Finally, in five cases with a later OS than bLT, the sLT tended to deviate from the bLT (mean difference, 106.8 s). The sLT is a noninvasive and continuous alternative to the bLT, independent of an early OS, although a late OS may negatively affect the sLT.

A novel exercise modality combined with electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) has been reported to increase cardiovascular and metabolic responses, such as blood lactate concentration. We aimed to examine the effect of constant load pedaling exercise, combined with EMS, by non-invasively and continuously measuring sweat lactate levels. A total of 22 healthy young men (20.7 ± 0.8 years) performed a constant load pedaling exercise for 20 min at 125% of the pre-measured ventilatory work threshold with (EMS condition) and without (control condition) EMS stimulation. Blood lactate concentration was measured by blood samples obtained from the earlobe every minute. Sweat lactate was monitored in real time using a sensor placed on the forearm. The sweat lactate threshold (sLT) was defined as the point of increase in sweat lactate. sLT occurred significantly earlier in the EMS condition than in the control condition. In the single regression analysis, the difference in sLT between the two conditions, as the independent variable, was a significant predictor of the difference in blood lactate concentrations at the end of the exercise (p < 0.05, r = −0.52). Sweat lactate measurement may be a noninvasive and simple alternative to blood lactate measurement to determine the effectiveness of exercise combined with EMS.

Background: Free fatty acids (FFAs) are an important source of energy, and also serve as signaling molecules to regulate gene expression. Exercise performed in a post-absorptive state, in contrast to that performed in a postprandial state, increases 24-h fat oxidation under an energy-balanced condition. The primary aim of the present study was to clarify whether the effects of exercise on the concentration and composition of plasma FFAs, which may underlie distinct effects of exercise on 24-h fat oxidation, depend on the nutritional state of the individual when performing the exercise. Methods: Ten healthy young men underwent 3 trials of indirect calorimetry in a metabolic chamber. The subjects performed exercise at 60% of VO2max for 60 min in either a post-absorptive or postprandial state, or remained sedentary without an exercise session (control). All trials were designed to be energy balanced over 24 h. Blood samples were collected immediately before and after exercise. Results: Fat oxidation over 24 h was increased only when exercise was performed in a post-absorptive state (control, 531 ± 60; post-absorptive, 779 ± 70; postprandial, 569 ± 37 kcal/24 h). The increase in the 24-h fat oxidation was related to the magnitude of the transient carbohydrate deficit after exercise. The plasma FFA concentration after exercise was higher in the post-absorptive trial (0.38 ± 0.04) than in the control (0.13 ± 0.01) and postprandial (0.15 ± 0.02 mM) trials. The ratio of unsaturated to saturated (U/S) fatty acids after exercise was higher in the post-absorptive trial (1.76 ± 0.06) than in the control (1.56 ± 0.07) and postprandial (1.53 ± 0.08) trials. On the other hand, the plasma FFA concentration after exercise in a postprandial state did not differ significantly from that in the control trial. Conclusion: Exercise performed in a post-absorptive state effectively increased the plasma FFA concentration and U/S ratio to a greater degree than exercise performed in a postprandial state, underlying the increase in the 24-h fat oxidation. The increase in the plasma FFA concentration was related to the transient carbohydrate deficit after exercise.

Abstract We investigated the effect of low energy availability (LEA) during three consecutive days of endurance training on muscle glycogen content and iron metabolism. Six male long distance runners completed three consecutive days of endurance training under LEA or neutral energy availability (NEA) conditions. Energy availability was set at 20 kcal/kg fat‐free mass (FFM)/day for LEA and 45 kcal/kg FFM/day for NEA. The subjects ran for 75 min at 70% of maximal oxygen uptake ( V˙O2max) on days 1–3. Venous blood samples were collected following an overnight fast on days 1–4, immediately and 3 hr after exercise on day 3. The muscle glycogen content on days 1–4 was evaluated by carbon‐magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Photoplethysmographic (PPG) pulses contain information about cardiovascular parameters. In particular, blood pressure can be estimated using PPG pulse decomposition analysis, which assumes that a PPG pulse is composed of the original heart ejection blood wave and its reflections in arterial branchings. Among pulse decomposition wave functions that have been studied in the literature, Gaussian waves are the most successful ones. However, a more adequate pulse decomposition function could be found to improve blood pressure estimates. In this paper, we propose pulse decomposition analysis using hyperbolic secant (sech) waves and compare results with corresponding Gaussian wave decomposition. We analyze how the parameters of each of the two types of decomposition waves correlate with blood pressure. For this analysis, continuous blood pressure data and PPG data were acquired from ten healthy volunteers. The blood pressure of volunteers was varied by asking them to hold their breath for up to 60 s. The results suggested sech wave decomposition had higher accuracy in estimating blood pressure than the Gaussian function. Thus, sech wave decomposition should be considered as a more robust alternative to Gaussian wave pulse decomposition for blood pressure estimation models.

By using one-dimensional (1-D) map methods, some lossless transmission line circuits with a short at one side terminal have been actively studied. Bifurcation results or chaotic states in the circuits have been reported. On the other hand, many weak or strong definitions such that a 1-D map is mathematically chaotic are still being studied. In such definitions, the definition of formal chaos is well known as being the most traditional and most definite. However, formal chaos existences have not been rigorously proven in such circuits. In this paper, a general lossless transmission circuit is considered first with a dc bias voltage source in series with a load resistor at one side terminal and with a three-segment piecewise linear resistor at another side terminal. Secondly, the method for deriving a 1-D map describing the behavior of the circuit is summarized. Thirdly, to provide a basis of chaotic application for the 1-D map, the mathematical definition of formal chaos and the sufficient conditions of the existence of formal chaos are discussed. Furthermore, by using Maple, formal chaos existences and bifurcation behavior of 1-D maps are presented. By using the Lyapunov exponent, the observability of formal chaos in such bifurcation processes is outlined. Finally, the principal results and the future works are summarized.

XitoSBML is a software tool designed to create an SBML (Systems Biology Markup Language) Level 3 Version 1 document from microscopic cellular images. It is implemented as an ImageJ plug-in and is designed to create spatial models that reflect the three-dimensional cellular geometry. With XitoSBML, users can perform spatial model simulations based on realistic cellular geometry by using SBML-supported software tools, including simulators such as Virtual Cell and Spatial Simulator. XitoSBML is open-source and is available at https://github.com/spatialsimulator/XitoSBML/. XitoSBML is confirmed to run on most 32/64-bit operating systems: Windows, MacOS, and Linux.

Male and female animals display innate sex-specific mating behaviors. In teleost fish, altering the adult sex steroid milieu can effectively reverse sex-typical mating behaviors, suggesting remarkable sexual lability of their brains as adults. In the teleost medaka, neuropeptide B (NPB) is expressed female-specifically in the brain nuclei implicated in mating behavior. Here, we demonstrate that NPB is a direct mediator of estrogen action on female mating behavior, acting in a female-specific but reversible manner. Analysis of regulatory mechanisms revealed that the female-specific expression of NPB is dependent on direct transcriptional activation by estrogen via an estrogen-responsive element and is reversed in response to changes in the adult sex steroid milieu. Behavioral studies of NPB knockouts revealed that female-specific NBP mediates female receptivity to male courtship. The female-specific NPB signaling identified herein is presumably a critical element of the neural circuitry underlying sexual dimorphism and lability of mating behaviors in teleosts.

Background: As part of the growing lifestyle diversity in modern society, there is wide variation in the time of day individuals choose to exercise. Recent surveys in the US and Japan have reported that on weekdays, more people exercise in the evening, with fewer individuals exercising in the morning or afternoon. Exercise performed in the post-prandial state has little effect on accumulated fat oxidation over 24 h (24-h fat oxidation) when energy intake is matched to energy expenditure (energy-balanced condition). The present study explored the possibility that exercise increases 24-h fat oxidation only when performed in a post-absorptive state, i.e. before breakfast. Methods: Indirect calorimetry using a metabolic chamber was performed in 10 young, non-obese men over 24 h. Subjects remained sedentary (control) or performed 60-min exercise before breakfast (morning), after lunch (afternoon), or after dinner (evening) at 50% of VO2max. All trials were designed to be energy balanced over 24 h. Time course of energy and substrate balance relative to the start of calorimetry were estimated from the differences between input (meal consumption) and output (oxidation). Findings: Fat oxidation over 24 h was increased only when exercise was performed before breakfast (control, 456 ± 61; morning, 717 ± 64; afternoon, 446 ± 57; and evening, 432 ± 44 kcal/day). Fat oxidation over 24 h was negatively correlated with the magnitude of the transient deficit in energy and carbohydrate. Interpretation: Under energy-balanced conditions, 24-h fat oxidation was increased by exercise only when performed before breakfast. Transient carbohydrate deficits, i.e., glycogen depletion, observed after morning exercise may have contributed to increased 24-h fat oxidation.

The fatty acid composition of the diet has been linked to the prevalence of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Compared with monounsaturated fatty acids, saturated fatty acids decrease fat oxidation and diet-induced thermogenesis. A potential limitation of previous studies was the short duration (≦5h) of calorimetry used. The present study compared the effects of a meal rich in saturated and unsaturated fatty acids on 24-h of fat oxidation. Ten males participated in two sessions of indirect calorimetry in a whole-room metabolic chamber. At each session, subjects consumed three meals rich in palm oil (44.3% as saturated, 42.3% as monounsaturated and 13.4% as polyunsaturated fatty acid) or rapeseed oil (11.7% as saturated, 59.3% as monounsaturated and 29.0% as polyunsaturated fatty acid). Fat oxidation over 24-h was significantly higher in the meal rich in rapeseed oil (779 ± 202 kcal/day) than that rich in palm oil (703 ± 158 kcal/day, P < 0.05), although energy expenditure was similar between both meal conditions. Meal rich in unsaturated fatty acids increased the oxidation of exogenous and/or endogenous fat. The results of a long calorimetry period indicate that rapeseed oil offered an advantage toward increased 24-h fat oxidation in healthy young males.

Exercise performed in a postprandial state does not increase 24-h fat oxidation of male and female subjects. Conversely, it has been shown in male subjects that exercise performed in a postabsorptive state increases 24-h fat oxidation compared with that in sedentary control and that with exercise trials performed after breakfast, lunch, or dinner. There is a paucity of study evaluating the effect of exercise performed in a postabsorptive state in female subjects.Nine young female subjects participated in indirect calorimetry measurement over 24-h using a room-size metabolic chamber in which subjects remained sedentary or performed 60 min exercise before breakfast at 50% of [Formula: see text]. Exercise was accompanied by an increase in energy intake to ensure that subjects were in a similar state of energy balance over 24 h for the two trials.Compared with the sedentary condition, exercise performed before breakfast increased 24-h fat oxidation (519 ± 37 vs. 400 ± 41 kcal/day). Time courses of relative energy balance differed between trials with transient negative energy balance observed before breakfast. The lowest values of relative energy balance observed during the 24-h calorimetry, i.e., transient energy deficit, were greater in exercise trials than in sedentary trials. The transient deficit in carbohydrate balance was also observed before breakfast, and magnitude of the deficit was greater in exercise trial compared to that of sedentary trial.Under energy-balanced conditions, exercise performed in a post-absorptive state increases 24-h fat oxidation in female subjects. The effect of exercise performed before breakfast can be attributed to nutritional state: a transient deficit in energy and carbohydrate at the end of exercise.

Indirect calorimetry with a room-size respiratory chamber provides an ideal setting to monitor energy metabolism for a prolonged period. During the last 10 years, experiments with this method have raised interesting observations such as: 1) exercise intensity has no effect on 24 h fat oxidation, 2) exercise has little, if any, effect on 24 h fat oxidation, and 3) exercise before breakfast increases 24 h fat oxidation. To some of the scientific community and general public, the first two statements may be unacceptable. But it can be factually explained that the impact of exercise on energy metabolism is not confined to the period of physical activity itself, and that fat oxidation remains elevated during the post-exercise period. The third observation seems to be insignificant, but contradicts the second one. It is premature to conclude that exercise has no effect on 24 h fat oxidation.

Optically active 3,3'-dimethyl-2,2'-diamino-1,1'-binaphthyl (DM-DABN) and 3,3'-dimethyl-2-amino-2'-hydroxybinaphthyl (DM-NOBIN) derivatives were synthesized by Cu-(-)-sparteine complex-catalyzed enantioselective homo- and hetero-coupling of 2-naphthylamine, respectively. Serum LDH isoenzymes were comparatively evaluated in experimental and human liver carcinoma. In our experimental studies, LDH4 increased in AH 66 F metastatic hepatic cancer, but DAB hepatic cancer showed a significant increase of LDH5. In clinical studies, LDH4 and LDH5 increased significantly in metastatic liver carcinoma, and 15 (79%) out of 19 cases showed higher values of LDH4. In primary liver carcinoma LDH5 increased significantly, and 12 (92%) out of 13 cases showed a higher LDH5. Therefore, analyses of serum LDH isoenzymes would aid in differential diagnosis of metastatic and primary liver carcinoma.
