Photothermal therapy (PTT) has received constant attention as a promising cancer treatment. However, PTT-induced inflammation can limit its effectiveness. To address this shortcoming, we developed second near-infrared (NIR-II) light-activated nanotheranostics (CPNPBs), which include a thermosensitive nitric oxide (NO) donor (BNN6) to enhance PTT. Under a 1064 nm laser irradiation, the conjugated polymer in CPNPBs serves as a photothermal agent for photothermal conversion, and the generated heat triggers the decomposition of BNN6 to release NO. The combination of hyperthermia and NO generation under single NIR-II laser irradiation allows enhanced thermal ablation of tumors. Consequently, CPNPBs can be exploited as potential candidates for NO-enhanced PTT, holding great promise for their clinical translational development.

PurposeWith the accelerated technological advancement, innovation has become a critical factor, which affects the core competitiveness of a company. However, studies about the relationship between internal stock option mechanisms and innovation productivity remain limited. Therefore, this paper aims to examine the impact of stock options and their elements design on innovation output from an internal mechanism perspective.Design/methodology/approachUsing a sample of 302 stock option incentive plans announced and implemented between 2006 and 2016, this study uses the propensity score matching and difference-in-difference model to find out whether the implementation of stock options improves the innovation outputs of enterprises.FindingsBased on the statistical analysis, it is concluded that: stock options can stimulate corporate innovation; a stock option may drive innovation outputs through two ways, performance-based incentives and risk-taking incentives, with the latter one playing a more dominant role and the risk-taking incentives of stock options, could be optimised when the non-executives granting proportion is larger, the granting range is limited, the incentive period is longer, the exercisable proportion is increasing, the price-to-strike ratio is lower and relatively loose performance assessment criteria are applied.Originality/valueThe conclusion reached in the study may provide valuable information to listed firms in designing and implementing the stock option plans.

An extensive body of research has demonstrated that pulmonary toxicity induced by fluoride is related to cell apoptosis. Although induction of death receptor-initiated extrinsic apoptosis by sodium fluoride (NaF) has been reported, its mechanism of action is still not clearly defined. Herein, we found that NaF treatment induced activation of caspase-8 in BEAS-2B cells, resulting in apoptosis, which was markedly reduced by blocking caspase-8 using small interfering RNA (siRNA). In this study, we report that death receptor 5 (DR5), a major component of the extrinsic apoptotic pathway, is markedly induced upon NaF stimulation. Enhanced DR5 induction was necessary for the apoptotic effects of NaF, inasmuch as transfected BEAS-2B cells with DR5 siRNA attenuated NaF-induced caspase-8 activation in lung cells. Mechanism investigation indicated that the induction of DR5, following NaF exposure, was mediated by tumor protein 53 (p53)-dependent transcriptional activation. Notably, we demonstrated that NaF could induce a significant increase in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) level derived from nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase 4 (NOX4). Specifically, NOX4 knockdown inhibited NaF-induced the activation of p53/DR5 axis by reducing NOX4-derived ROS production. Further in vivo investigation demonstrated that NOX4 deficiency markedly attenuates NaF-induced lung injury, apoptosis, and ROS levels in the lung. Moreover, the expressions of p53 and DR5 were significantly reduced after NaF treatment in NOX4 knockout mice compared with the wild type mice. Taken together, our findings provide a novel insight into for the pulmonary apoptosis in response to NaF exposure.

In this work, we introduced the acrylate recognition group into dicyanoisophorone derivative DCI-C-OH to construct the NIR fluorescent probe DCI-C-Cys with a large Stokes shift (240 nm). DCI-C-Cys could specifically respond to Cys, resulting in a 22-fold increase in fluorescence intensity at 702 nm. Meanwhile, the probe has the advantages of good water solubility, high sensitivity (93 nM), and excellent biocompatibility. Moreover, DCI-C-Cys successfully monitored endogenous and exogenous Cys in HepG2 cells and zebrafish. Most importantly, we found that balsam pear polysaccharide could lead to the increase of intracellular Cys levels, which might be conducive to the further study of the antioxidant mechanism of balsam pear polysaccharide.

Cardamonin (CD), a naturally occurring chalcone isolated from large black cardamom, was previously reported to suppress the proliferation of breast cancer cells. However, its precise molecular anti-tumor mechanisms have not been well elucidated. In this study, we found that CD markedly inhibited the proliferation of MDA-MB 231 and MCF-7 breast cancer cells through the induction of G2/M arrest and apoptosis. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays a pivotal role in the inhibition of CD-induced cell proliferation. Treatment with N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), an ROS scavenger, blocked CD-induced G2/M arrest and apoptosis in this study. Quenching of ROS by overexpression of catalase also blocked CD-induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. We showed that CD enhanced the expression and nuclear translocation of Forkhead box O3 (FOXO3a) via upstream c-Jun N-terminal kinase, inducing the expression of FOXO3a and its target genes, including p21, p27, and Bim. This process led to the reduction of cyclin D1 and enhancement of activated caspase-3 expression. The addition of NAC markedly reversed these effects, knockdown of FOXO3a using small interfering RNA also decreased CD-induced G2/M arrest and apoptosis. In vivo, CD efficiently suppressed the growth of MDA-MB 231 breast cancer xenograft tumors. Taken together, our data provide a molecular mechanistic rationale for CD-induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in breast cancer cells.

Metal chalcogenide semiconductor nanomaterials are emerging as a promising photothermal and theranostic agent. In this work, uniform Bi2S3 hollow spheres (HS) have been successfully synthesized by using glycerol (Gly) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as morphology regulator, and l -cysteine ( l -Cys) as a sulfur source and surface modifier. The resulting l -Cys/Bi2S3 HS shows a stronger near-infrared (NIR) harvesting capability in comparison with its solid counterpart, and the photothermal conversion efficiency reached up to 31.5%. The nature of hollow structure endows the l -Cys/Bi2S3 HS with higher specific surface area and enhanced drugs loading capacity. As high as 86.4% doxorubicin (DOX) could be loaded to the outer and inner surfaces of l -Cys/Bi2S3 HS and their controlled releasing behavior follow a pH- and time-dependent manner. Meanwhile, the functional group of l -cysteine imparted the HS with good dispersibility and biocompatibility. The novel hollow materials with simultaneous integrated photothermal ablation and drug therapy may be a promising agent for cancer treatment.

Extending the light response range of BiPO4 and meanwhile keeping its strong UV-light activity remains a challenge. In this work, BiVO4 nanocrystals were uniformly anchored onto BiPO4 surface via a novel oxoanion-exchange reaction between BiPO4 and VO4 oxoanions. The formation of heterostructure was confirmed from SEM, HRTEM observations and XRD analyses. Meanwhile, PL, TPC and EIS test results provided the further evidence for the effective charge transfer and separation across the interfaces. Photocatalytic performance was explored by the removal of four organics and highly depended on the BiVO4 content. The 25% BiVO4/BiPO4 exhibited the optimal photocatalytic activity and decomposed more than 90% metronidazole (MNZ) in 120 min under UV-light irradiation. Moreover, the degradation rates of MNZ, phenol, rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB) could reach up to 66.5%, 75.4%, 98.3% and 88.1% within 360 min under visible light irradiation, respectively. The improvement of photocatalytic activity could be mainly attributed to enhanced visible light harvesting and effective photogenerated carrier separation. Based on photoelectric analyses, scavenger experiments and theoretical calculation, the possible photocatalytic mechanism under UV and visible light was discussed. This work provides a new strategy for constructing other oxysalt heterostructures for environmental remediation and energy conversion.

Recent work shows erosion reduces vertical normal stress, triggering thrust earthquakes. Whether deposition will inhibit earthquake triggering, or favor different types of earthquakes is not clear. Here we address this question using earthquake catalogs, earthquake focal mechanisms, and a point-load stress transfer model to study induced seismicity at the Tsaoling impoundment after the 1999 Mw7.6 Chi-Chi earthquake. This impoundment formed when a river was blocked by the mainshock-induced landslide. Temporally, we found a marked increase and decrease in earthquake activities in this location at the beginning and end of this impoundment life cycle. Spatially, the number of earthquakes decreased away from the impoundment in a pattern correlated with surface point load models based on both the Boussinesq and Westergaard equations. Using first motions and SH to P amplitude ratios, we derived focal mechanisms, and found the point source on surface weakens the strike-slip and normal fault planes mostly occurred during our study period. Some of the Chi-Chi aftershocks not explained by dislocation stress transfer studies can be explained by such load-induced seismicity. Previous studies show earthquakes can affect surficial geological processes; this study suggests that surficial processes can create positive loading that feedbacks and triggers seismicity.

Theranostic nanomedicines involved in photothermal therapy (PTT) have received constant attention as promising alternatives to traditional therapies in clinic. However, most photothermal agents are limited by their instability and low photothermal conversion efficiency. In this study, we report new conjugated polymer dots (Pdots) as multifunctional agents for photoacoustic (PA) imaging-guided PTT. The novel 4,8-bis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl]-2,6-bis(trimethylstannyl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-6,6'-dibromo-N,N'-(2-ethylhexyl)isoindigo (BDT-IID) Pdots are readily fabricated though nanoreprecipitation and can absorb strongly in the 650-700 nm region. Furthermore, the BDT-IID Pdots possess a stable nanostructure and an extremely low biotoxicity. In particular, its photothermal conversion efficiency can be up to 45%. More importantly, our in vivo results exhibit that the BDT-IID Pdots are able to offer concurrently enhanced PA contrast and sufficient photothermal effect. Consequently, the BDT-IID Pdots can be exploited as a unique theranostic nanoplatform for PA imaging-guided PTT of tumors, holding great promise for their clinical translational development.

Cysteine (Cys) is an effective biomarker in life systems and is closely related to a variety of diseases, so developing a specific and efficient detection method for Cys is of great significance. To date, extensive work has been undertaken toward this goal. However, the differentiation of Cys from other biothiols still represents a challenge from an experimental point of view. Toward this end, a selective and sensitive red-emitting probe (TMN-NCS) with an isothiocyanate (ITC)-based structure was proposed in this paper. A large Stokes shift (210 nm) was observed upon addition of Cys to a solution of TMN-NCS. In addition, TMN-NCS showed low toxicity, a low detection limit (120 nM), and excellent cell permeability. The results suggested that TMN-NCS holds great promise for biological applications.

Light has been widely used for cancer therapeutics such as photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy. This paper describes a strategy called enzyme-enhanced phototherapy (EEPT) for cancer treatment. We constructed a nanoparticle platform by covalent conjugation of glucose oxidase (GOx) to small polymer dots, which could be persistently immobilized into a tumor. While the malignant tumors have high glucose uptake, the GOx efficiently catalyzes the glucose oxidation with simultaneous generation of H2O2. Under light irradiation, the in situ generated H2O2 was photolyzed to produce hydroxyl radical, the most reactive oxygen species, for killing cancer cells. In vitro assays indicated that the cancer cells were destroyed by using a nanoparticle concentration at 0.2 μg/mL and a light dose of ∼120 J/cm2, indicating the significantly enhanced efficiency of the EEPT method when compared to typical PDT that requires a photosensitizer of >10 μg/mL for effective cell killing under the same light dose. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising treatment modality for clinical cancer therapy. However, the therapeutic effect of PDT is strongly dependent on the property of photosensitizer. Here, we developed photo-cross-linkable semiconductor polymer dots doped with photosensitizer Chlorin e6 (Ce6) to construct a nanoparticle platform for photodynamic therapy. Photoreactive oxetane groups were attached to the side chains of the semiconductor polymer. After photo-cross-linking reaction, the Ce6-doped Pdots formed an interpenetrated structure to prevent Ce6 leaching out from the Pdot matrix. Spectroscopic characterizations revealed an efficient energy transfer from the polymer to Ce6 molecules, resulting in amplified generation of singlet oxygen. We evaluated the cellular uptake, cytotoxicity, and photodynamic effect of the Pdots in gastric adenocarcinoma cells. In this article, we present a fast-marching based algorithm for generating superpixel (FMS) partitions of images. The idea behind the algorithm is to draw an analogy between waves propagating in an heterogeneous medium and regions growing on an image at a rate depending on the local color and texture. The FMS algorithm is evaluated on the Berkeley Segmentation Dataset 500. It yields results in term of boundary adherence that are comparable to the ones obtained with state of the art algorithms including SLIC or ERGC, while improving on these algorithms in terms of compactness and density.

The development of multifunctional organic nanomaterials is extremely essential for their in vivo cancer theranostic applications. To date, photoacoustic imaging (PAI) and PAI-guided photothermal therapy (PTT) have been performed for noninvasive cancer diagnosis and precise ablation of tumors. To conduct concurrent PAI and PTT, it is essential to develop theranostic agents with strong optical absorption and high photothermal transfer efficiency. In this study, we have engineered theranostic agents with tunable absorptions based on conjugated polymer dots (Pdots) with different structures via the simple precipitation method. The as-synthesized Pdots exhibit strong absorption, high biocompatibility, and superior stability. In addition, the Pdots demonstrate that they can serve as contrast agents for multiscale PAI in vitro and in vivo. More importantly, a high photothermal conversion efficiency up to 40% is reached under irradiation with LED light, resulting in effective cancer treatment with extremely low light dose. Consequently, they show the potential as imaging-guided therapeutic agents for clinical cancer treatment and various biomedical applications.

Control of stereochemistry plays a key role in medicinal chemistry, material and life science. As a prominent AIE luminogen, tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivatives have E/Z isomers which are challenging to separate even by HPLC. Herein, we designed oxetane-substituted TPE (TPE-2OXE) and separated pure isomers by simple column chromatography with high yields, as confirmed by mass spectrometry, IR and NMR spectroscopy. The isomerization of the two isomers can occur by photo- and thermo-activation. Importantly, (Z)-TPE-2OXE isomer solid shows bathochromic emission with a quantum yield 5 times higher than that of (E)-TPE-2OXE. The differences in emission wavelength and quantum yield are derived from distinct emission mechanisms of locally excited (LE) state emission of (E)-TPE-2OXE and charge transfer (CT) state emission of (Z)-TPE-2OXE. A convenient, nontoxic and efficient way is developed for the fabrication of three-dimensional free-standing graphene foam modified with ZnO nanorods arrays. The resulting composite foam (ZnO/rGO foam) has a hierarchical micro-nano structure. The conductive macroporous structure will enhance the light harvesting, the photoinduced electron-hole separation and electrons transport. Moreover, the ZnO nanorods on the graphene surface will act as the active material which show the dramatic improvement in photocurrent generation and photocatalytic activity. This simple and scalable manufacturing technology will open a reasonable design and engineering route for the high-performance photoelectric conversion apparatus and environmental pollutant management.

The photosensitizers used in photodynamic therapy are mainly based on porphyrin derivatives. However, clinical applications encounter several limitations regarding photosensitizers such as their low absorption coefficients, poor water-solubility, and leaching from delivery carriers. Here, we describe covalent incorporation of porphyrin in conjugated polymer backbone for development of efficient polymer-dot photosensitizer. Spectroscopic characterizations revealed that the light-harvesting polymer dominantly transfer the excitation energy to the porphyrin unit, yielding efficient singlet oxygen generation for photodynamic therapy. The polymer dots (Pdots) also possess excellent stability that overcomes the photosensitizer leaching problem as encountered in other nanoparticle carriers. In vitro cytotoxicity and photodynamic efficacy of the Pdots were evaluated in MCF-7 cells by in vitro assay, indicating that the Pdots can efficiently damage cancer cells. In vivo photodynamic therapy by using the Pdots was further investigated with xenograft tumors in Balb/c nude mice, which show that the tumors were significantly inhibited or eradicated in certain cases. The high-yield singlet oxygen generation and excellent stability of porphyrin-incorporated Pdots are promising for photodynamic treatment of malignant tumors.

Semiconductor polymer dots (Pdots) were encapsulated into a SiO2 matrix to form fluorescent nanocomposites using a modified Stober method. Significantly, the photostability and thermal stability of the nanocomposites were greatly improved as compared to those of pure Pdots. The luminescent nanocomposites combined with blue LEDs result in white-light emitting devices with a high color-rendering index.

Near-infrared emissive organic dots with a high fluorescence quantum efficiency (AEE dots) are prepared by using an amphiphilic polymer poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (PSMA) as the co-encapsulation matrix and a novel small molecule fluorogen (DPPBPA) with high near-infrared emission as the core. The PSMA dots show small particle size of about 20 nm, a large Stokes shift of 304 nm and really high fluorescence quantum efficiency of 20%. The streptavidin-dots are obtained by conjugating streptavidin to carboxyl groups on the surface of PSMA dots. These streptavidin-dots can effectively and specifically label the target cell without any nonspecific binding, such as MCF-7 cells. Together with the negligible cytotoxicity, the near-infrared emissive AEE dots are promising red fluorescent probes for future bioimaging applications.

Image segmentation is a classical problem in image processing, which aims at defining an image partition where each identified region corresponds to some object present in the scene. The watershed algorithm is a powerful tool from mathematical morphology to perform this specific task. When applied directly to the gradient of the image to be segmented, it usually yields an over-segmented image. To address this issue, one often uses markers that roughly correspond to the locations of the objects to be segmented. The main challenge associated to marker-controlled segmentation becomes thus the determination of the markers locations. In this article, we present a novel method to select markers for the watershed algorithm based upon multi-resolution approximations. The main principle of the method is to rely on the discrete decimated wavelet transform to obtain successive approximations of the image to be segmented. The minima of the gradient image of each coarse approximation are then propagated back to the original image space and selected as markers for the watershed transform, thus defining a hierarchical structure for the detected contours. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated by comparing its results to manually segmented images from the Berkeley segmentation database.

We report a ratiometric fluorescent sensor based on semiconducting polymer dots chelated with terbium ions to detect bacterial spores in aqueous solution. Fluorescent polyfluorene (PFO) dots serve as a scaffold to coordinate with lanthanide ions that can be sensitized by calcium dipicolinate (CaDPA), an important biomarker of bacterial spores. The absorption band of PFO dots extends to deep UV region, allowing both the reference and the sensitizer can be excited with a single wavelength (~275 nm). The fluorescence of PFO remains constant as a reference, while the Tb(3+) ions exhibit enhanced luminescence upon binding with DPA. The sharp fluorescence peaks of β-phase PFO dots and the narrow-band emissions of Tb(3+) ions enable ratiometric and sensitive CaDPA detection with a linear response over nanomolar concentration and a detection limit of ~0.2 nM. The Pdots based sensor also show excellent selectivity to CaDPA over other aromatic ligands. Our results indicate that the Tb(3+) chelated Pdots sensor is promising for sensitive and rapid detection of bacterial spores.

This paper described the energy-transfer amplified singlet oxygen generation in semiconductor polymer dots (Pdots) for in vitro and in vivo photodynamic therapy. Hydrophobic photosensitizer tetraphenylporphyrin was facilely doped in the nanoparticles consisting of densely packed semiconductor polymers. Optical characterizations indicated that the fluorescence of Pdots was completely quenched by the photosensitizer, yielding an energy transfer efficiency of nearly 100% and singlet-oxygen generation quantum yield of ∼50%. We evaluated the cellular uptake, dark toxicity, and photodynamic therapy of the Pdot photosensizer in human gastric adenocarcinoma cells. The in vitro studies indicated that cancer cells were efficiently destroyed at very low dose of the Pdots such as 1 μg/mL by using the light dose of 90 J/cm(2), which is considerably less than that in clinical practice. The antitumor effect of the Pdots was further evaluated in vivo with human gastric adenocarcinoma xenografts in Balb/c nude mice, which show that the xenograft tumors were significantly inhibited and eradicated in some cases. Our results indicate the energy transfer amplified Pdot platforms have great therapeutic potential for treating malignant cancers.

Earthquake source parameters are important for earthquake studies and seismic hazard assessment. Moment tensors are among the most important earthquake source parameters, and are now routinely derived using modern broadband seismic networks around the world. Similar waveform inversion techniques can also apply to other available data, including strong-motion seismograms. Strong-motion waveforms are also broadband, and recorded in many regions since the 1980s. Thus, strong-motion data can be used to augment moment tensor catalogs with a much larger dataset than that available from the high-gain, broadband seismic networks. However, a systematic comparison between the moment tensors derived from strong motion waveforms and high-gain broadband waveforms has not been available. In this study, we inverted the source mechanisms of Taiwan earthquakes between 1993 and 2009 by using the regional moment tensor inversion method using digital data from several hundred stations in the Taiwan Strong Motion Instrumentation Program (TSMIP). By testing different velocity models and filter passbands, we were able to successfully derive moment tensor solutions for 107 earthquakes of M w >= 4.8. The solutions for large events agree well with other available moment tensor catalogs derived from local and global broadband networks. However, for M w = 5.0 or smaller events, we consistently over estimated the moment magnitudes by 0.5 to 1.0. We have tested accelerograms, and velocity waveforms integrated from accelerograms for the inversions, and found the results are similar. In addition, we used part of the catalogs to study important seismogenic structures in the area near Meishan Taiwan which was the site of a very damaging earthquake a century ago, and found that the structures were dominated by events with complex right-lateral strike-slip faulting during the recent decade. The procedures developed from this study may be applied to other strong-motion datasets to compliment or fill gaps in catalogs from regional broadband networks and teleseismic networks.

Fingerprint imaging and recognition represent the most important approach in personal identification. Here we designed and synthesized oxetane-functionalized semiconductor polymer dots (Ox-Pdots) for covalent patterning and rapid visualization of latent fingerprints. The high fluorescence brightness, large Stokes shift, and excellent surface properties of the Ox-Pdots lead to fingerprint imaging with high sensitivity and resolution. Fingerprint ridge structures with the first, second, and third levels of details were clearly developed within minutes. The method was facile and robust for visualization of fingerprints on various surfaces including glass, metal, and plastics. Moreover, the oxetane groups in the Ox-Pdots undergo cross-linking reactions induced by a short-time UV irradiation, yielding 3-D intermolecular polymer network. The resulting fingerprint patterns exhibit unparalleled stability against rigorous treatment, as compared to those by traditional Pdots. Our results demonstrate that the Ox-Pdots hold great promise for latent fingerprint imaging and fluorescence anticounterfeiting applications.

Stable full-color fluorescence patterning are achieved by multicolor polymer-dot inks. The fluorescent patterns show extraordinary stability upon various treatments, offering a superior combination of bright fluorescence, excellent photostability, chemical resistance, and eco-friendship.

Carbon quantum dots (Cdots) are synthesized by a simple method and introduced into active layer of polymer solar cells (PSCs). The performance of doped devices was apparently improved, and the highest power conversion efficiency of 7.05% was obtained, corresponding to a 28.2% enhancement compared with that of the contrast device. The charge transport properties, resistance, impedance, and transient absorption spectrum are systematically investigated to explore how the Cdots affect on PSCs performance. This study reveals the importance of Cdots in enhancing the efficiency of PSCs and gives insight into the mechanism of charge transport improvement.
