To evaluate the prognostic significance of the NAR score and develop nomograms for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) treated after neoadjuvant chemo-radiotherapy (nCRT) combined with total meso-rectal excision (TME) surgery to predict prognostic.Retrospective collection among LARC patients treated at Fujian Medical University Union Hospital (training cohort) and Fujian Medical University Affiliated Zhangzhou Hospital (external validation cohort) between Jan 10, 2011 and Dec 28, 2021. The NAR score was calculated by formula: [5pN-3(cT-pT) + 12]^2/9.61. NAR score low ( 8), intermediate (8-16), and high ( 16).1665 patients in the training cohort and 256 patients in the external validation cohorts were enrolled. Lower NAR score was significantly associated with better cumulative incidence of OS, DFS, local recurrence (LR), and distant metastasis (DM) (all P 0.001). Multivariate Cox regression analysis indicates that NAR score, distance to the anal verge, no.253 LN metastasis, post-CRT carbohydrate antigen 19-9, tumor regression grade, and surgery method are independent predictors of OS and DFS (all P 0.001). Among these independent factors, the NAR score had the highest area under the curve (AUC) and the nomograms to predict OS and DFS were generated. The AUCs for the accuracy of the prediction OS were 1 year = 0.742, 3 years = 0.749, 5 years = 0.713; prediction DFS were 1 year = 0.727, 3 years = 0.739, 5 years = 0.718, the models have good accuracy.The NAR score can effectively classify patients with LARC into groups with varying outcomes of OS, DFS, LR, and DM. Moreover, the novel nomograms comprising the NAR score were developed and validated to help predict OS and DFS.

To overcome the drawback of complex structure and high cost attributed from the utilization of phase shifters to generate OAM in the conventional schemes, this paper proposes a new method for generating OAM based on a fixed delay line. By deriving the proposed system with fixed delay line theoretically, the relationship between the frequency of the input signal on the delay line and the topological charge of the OAM is obtained, and the topological charge of the generated OAM can be controlled by controlling the frequency. Furthermore, this paper proposes a vortex beam pointing control method based on phased array scanning, so as to realize the beam steering of OAM. It is then verified by using electromagnetic simulation, and the simulation results show that the proposed method is feasible. The proposed method not only has the advantages of simple structure and low cost, but also can generate OAM with continuously adjustable topological charge by controlling the frequency, which has the functions of topological charge reconstruction and dynamic adjustment.

Inorganic–organic hybrid materials represent a large share of newly reported structures, owing to their simple synthetic routes and customizable properties1. This proliferation has led to a characterization bottleneck: many hybrid materials are obligate microcrystals with low symmetry and severe radiation sensitivity, interfering with the standard techniques of single-crystal X-ray diffraction2,3 and electron microdiffraction4–11. Here we demonstrate small-molecule serial femtosecond X-ray crystallography (smSFX) for the determination of material crystal structures from microcrystals. We subjected microcrystalline suspensions to X-ray free-electron laser radiation12,13 and obtained thousands of randomly oriented diffraction patterns. We determined unit cells by aggregating spot-finding results into high-resolution powder diffractograms. After indexing the sparse serial patterns by a graph theory approach14, the resulting datasets can be solved and refined using standard tools for single-crystal diffraction data15–17. We describe the ab initio structure solutions of mithrene (AgSePh)18–20, thiorene (AgSPh) and tethrene (AgTePh), of which the latter two were previously unknown structures. In thiorene, we identify a geometric change in the silver–silver bonding network that is linked to its divergent optoelectronic properties20. We demonstrate that smSFX can be applied as a general technique for structure determination of beam-sensitive microcrystalline materials at near-ambient temperature and pressure., Small-molecule serial femtosecond X-ray crystallography (smSFX) characterizes microcrystals by indexing sparse serial XFEL diffraction frames, with little sample preparation, without beam damage, and at room temperature and pressure.

Aim The purpose of this study was to explore the clinical factors associated with achieving good response after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) and to develop and validate a nomogram. Methods A total of 1724 consecutive LARC patients treated at Fujian Medical University Union Hospital from January 2010 to December 2021 were retrospectively evaluated as the training cohort; 267 consecutive LARC patients treated at Zhangzhou Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University during the same period were evaluated as the external 2 cohorts. Based on the pathological results after radical surgery, treatment response was defined as follows: good response, stage ypT0∼2N0M0 and poor response, ypT3∼4N0M0 and/or N positive. Independent influencing factors were analyzed by logistic regression, a nomogram was developed and validated, and the model was evaluated using internal and external data cohorts for validation. Results In the training cohort, 46.6% of patients achieved good response after nCRT combined with radical surgery. The rate of the retained anus was higher in the good response group (93.5% vs. 90.7%, P Conclusion We identified factors associated with achieving good response in LARC after treatment with nCRT and developed a nomogram to contribute to clinical decision-making.

The development of a controllable, selective, and repeatable etch process is crucial for controlling the layer thickness and patterning of two-dimensional (2D) materials. However, the atomically thin dimensions and high structural similarity of different 2D materials make it difficult to adapt conventional thin-film etch processes. In this work, we propose a selective, damage-free atomic layer etch (ALE) that enables layer-by-layer removal of monolayer WSe2 without altering the physical, optical, and electronic properties of the underlying layers. The etch uses a top-down approach where the topmost layer is oxidized in a self-limited manner and then removed using a selective etch. Using a comprehensive set of material, optical, and electrical characterization, we show that the quality of our ALE processed layers is comparable to that of pristine layers of similar thickness. The ALE processed WSe2 layers preserve their bright photoluminescence characteristics and possess high room-temperature hole mobilities of 515 cm2/V·s, essential for fabricating high-performance 2D devices. Further, using graphene as a testbed, we demonstrate the fabrication of ultra-clean 2D devices using a sacrificial monolayer WSe2 layer to protect the channel during processing, which is etched in the final process step in a technique we call sacrificial WSe2 with ALE processing (SWAP). The graphene transistors made using the SWAP technique demonstrate high room-temperature field-effect mobilities, up to 200,000 cm2/V·s, better than previously reported unencapsulated graphene devices.

Optical parametric amplification is a second-order nonlinear process whereby an optical signal is amplified by a pump via the generation of an idler field1. This mechanism is inherently related to spontaneous parametric down-conversion, which currently constitutes the building block for entangled photon pair generation2, a process that is exploited in modern quantum technologies. Here we demonstrate single-pass optical parametric amplification at the ultimate thickness limit; using semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides3,4, we show that amplification can be attained over propagation through a single atomic layer. Such a second-order nonlinear interaction at the two-dimensional limit bypasses phase-matching requirements5 and achieves ultrabroad amplification bandwidths. In agreement with first-principle calculations, we observe that the amplification process is independent of the in-plane polarization of signal and pump fields. By the use of AA-stacked multilayers, we present a clear pathway towards the scaling of conversion efficiency. Our results pave the way for the development of atom-sized tunable sources of radiation with potential applications in nanophotonics and quantum information technology. Single-pass optical parametric amplification is demonstrated following propagation though an atomically thin semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide. The demonstration may lead to atom-sized tunable light sources.

Light matter interactions are greatly enhanced in two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors because of strong excitonic effects. Many optoelectronic applications would benefit from creating stacks of atomically thin 2D semiconductors separated by insulating barrier layers, forming multiquantum-well structures. However, most 2D transition metal chalcogenide systems require serial stacking to create van der Waals multilayers. Hybrid metal organic chalcogenolates (MOChas) are self-assembling hybrid materials that combine multiquantum-well properties with scalable chemical synthesis and air stability. In this work, we use spatially resolved linear and nonlinear optical spectroscopies over a range of temperatures to study the strongly excitonic optical properties of mithrene, that is, silver benzeneselenolate, and its synthetic isostructures. We experimentally probe s-type bright excitons and p-type excitonic dark states formed in the quantum confined 2D inorganic monolayers of silver selenide with exciton binding energy up to ∼0.4 eV, matching recent theoretical predictions of the material class. We further show that mithrene's highly efficient blue photoluminescence, ultrafast exciton radiative dynamics, as well as flexible tunability of molecular structure and optical properties demonstrate great potential of MOChas for constructing optoelectronic and quantum excitonic devices.

The equilibrium and non-equilibrium optical properties of single-layer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are determined by strongly bound excitons. Exciton relaxation dynamics in TMDs have been extensively studied by time-domain optical spectroscopies. However, the formation dynamics of excitons following non-resonant photoexcitation of free electron-hole pairs have been challenging to directly probe because of their inherently fast timescales. Here, we use extremely short optical pulses to non-resonantly excite an electron-hole plasma and show the formation of two-dimensional excitons in single-layer MoS2 on the timescale of 30 fs via the induced changes to photo-absorption. These formation dynamics are significantly faster than in conventional 2D quantum wells and are attributed to the intense Coulombic interactions present in 2D TMDs. A theoretical model of a coherent polarization that dephases and relaxes to an incoherent exciton population reproduces the experimental dynamics on the sub-100-fs timescale and sheds light into the underlying mechanism of how the lowest-energy excitons, which are the most important for optoelectronic applications, form from higher-energy excitations. Importantly, a phonon-mediated exciton cascade from higher energy states to the ground excitonic state is found to be the rate-limiting process. These results set an ultimate timescale of the exciton formation in TMDs and elucidate the exceptionally fast physical mechanism behind this process., The formation dynamics of excitons in 2D transition metal dichalcogenides are challenging to probe directly because of their inherently fast timescales. Here, we demonstrate controlled defect engineering in monolayer WSe2 via UV-ozone treatment. The creation of Tungsten oxyselenide (TOS) shows broad red-shifted PL emission centered at ~770 nm at room temperature.

Twisted two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures have unlocked a new means for manipulating the properties of quantum materials. The resulting mesoscopic moiré superlattices are accessible to a wide variety of scanning probes. To date, spatially-resolved techniques have prioritized electronic structure visualization, with lattice response experiments only in their infancy. Here, we therefore investigate lattice dynamics in twisted layers of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), formed by a minute twist angle between two hBN monolayers assembled on a graphite substrate. Nano-infrared (nano-IR) spectroscopy reveals systematic variations of the in-plane optical phonon frequencies amongst the triangular domains and domain walls in the hBN moiré superlattices. Our first-principles calculations unveil a local and stacking-dependent interaction with the underlying graphite, prompting symmetry-breaking between the otherwise identical neighboring moiré domains of twisted hBN., Here, the authors investigate the lattice dynamics of twisted hexagonal boron nitride layers via nano-infrared spectroscopy, showing local and stacking-dependent variations of the optical phonon frequencies associated to the interaction with the graphite substrate.

Optical parametric amplification is a coherent mechanism whereby an optical signal is amplified by a pump via the generation of an idler field and it is the key ingredient of parametric oscillators. Here we demonstrate optical parametric amplification by monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides, showing that amplification can be attained over a propagation through an atomic layer. The surface-like second-order nonlinear interaction bypasses phase-matching constraints, enabling ultrabroadband collinear amplification, generally unattainable due to material dispersion. Moreover, the amplification process is invariant over signal and pump in-plane polarizations. Our experimental findings pave the way for innumerable applications in nanophotonics and quantum information technology.

Second harmonic generation (SHG) is a nonlinear optical response arising exclusively from broken inversion symmetry in the electric-dipole limit. Recently, SHG has attracted widespread interest as a versatile and noninvasive tool for characterization of crystal symmetry and emerging ferroic or topological orders in quantum materials. However, conventional far-field optics is unable to probe local symmetry at the deep subwavelength scale. Here, we demonstrate near-field SHG imaging of 2D semiconductors and heterostructures with the spatial resolution down to 20 nm using a scattering-type nano-optical apparatus. We show that near-field SHG efficiency is greatly enhanced by excitons in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides. Furthermore, by correlating nonlinear and linear scattering-type nano-imaging, we resolve nanoscale variations of interlayer stacking order in bilayer WSe2, and reveal the stacking-tuned excitonic light-matter-interactions. Our work demonstrates nonlinear optical interrogation of crystal symmetry and structure-property relationships at the nanometer length scales relevant to emerging properties in quantum materials.

Two-dimensional (2D) excitons arise from electron–hole confinement along one spatial dimension. Such excitations are often described in terms of Frenkel or Wannier limits according to the degree of exciton spatial localization and the surrounding dielectric environment. In hybrid material systems, such as the 2D perovskites, the complex underlying interactions lead to excitons of an intermediate nature, whose description lies somewhere between the two limits, and a better physical description is needed. Here, we explore the photophysics of a tuneable materials platform where covalently bonded metal-chalcogenide layers are spaced by organic ligands that provide confinement barriers for charge carriers in the inorganic layer. We consider self-assembled, layered bulk silver benzeneselenolate, [AgSePh]∞, and use a combination of transient absorption spectroscopy and ab initio GW plus Bethe–Salpeter equation calculations. We demonstrate that in this non-polar dielectric environment, strongly anisotropic excitons dominate the optical transitions of [AgSePh]∞. We find that the transient absorption measurements at room temperature can be understood in terms of low-lying excitons confined to the AgSe planes with in-plane anisotropy, featuring anisotropic absorption and emission. Finally, we present a pathway to control the exciton behaviour by changing the chalcogen in the material lattice. Our studies unveil unexpected excitonic anisotropies in an unexplored class of tuneable, yet air-stable, hybrid quantum wells, offering design principles for the engineering of an ordered, yet complex dielectric environment and its effect on the excitonic phenomena in such emerging materials.

Micron-sized lasers fabricated from upconverting nanoparticles (UCNP) coupled to whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonators can exhibit continuous-wave anti-Stokes lasing useful for tracking cells, environmental sensing, and coherent stimulation of biological activity. The integration of these microlasers into organisms and microelectronics requires even smaller diameters, however, which raises threshold pump powers beyond practical limits for biological applications. To meet the need for low lasing thresholds and high fidelity fabrication methods, we use correlative optical and electron microscopy to uncover the nanoparticle assembly process and structural factors that determine efficient upconverted lasing. We show that 5 μm microspheres with controlled submonolayer UCNP coatings exhibit, on average, 25-fold lower laser thresholds (1.7 ± 0.7 kW/cm2) compared to the mean values of the lowest threshold UCNP lasers, and variability is reduced 30-fold. WGMs are observed in the upconversion spectra for TiO2-coated microspheres as small as 3 μm, a size at which optical losses had previously prevented such observations. Finally, we demonstrate that the WGM signatures of these upconverting microlasers can be imaged and distinguished through tissue-mimicking phantoms. These advances will enable the fabrication of more efficient upconverting lasers for imaging, sensing, and actuation in optically complex environments.

Here we exploit transient reflectivity with sub-20fs temporal resolution to extract the exciton formation timescale from the build up of A/B exciton dynamics of 1L-MoS2. The timescale for this process ranges from ~15fs to ~35fs. © 2020 The Author(s)

We report continuous-wave second harmonic and sum frequency generation from two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers and their heterostructures with pump irradiances several orders of magnitude lower than those of conventional pulsed experiments. The high nonlinear efficiency originates from above-gap excitons in the band nesting regions, as revealed by wavelength-dependent second order optical susceptibilities quantified in four common monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides. Using sum frequency excitation spectroscopy and imaging, we identify and distinguish one- and two-photon resonances in both monolayers and heterobilayers. Data for heterostructures reveal responses from constituent layers accompanied by nonlinear signal correlated with interlayer transitions. We demonstrate spatial mapping of heterogeneous interlayer coupling by sum frequency and second harmonic confocal microscopy on heterobilayer MoSe

Avalanche phenomena leverage steeply nonlinear dynamics to generate disproportionately high responses from small perturbations and are found in a multitude of events and materials, enabling technologies including optical phase-conjugate imaging, infrared quantum counting, and efficient upconverted lasing. However, the photon avalanching (PA) mechanism underlying these optical innovations has been observed only in bulk materials and aggregates, and typically at cryogenic temperatures, limiting its utility and impact. Here, we report the realization of PA at room temperature in single nanostructures--small, Tm-doped upconverting nanocrystals--and demonstrate their use in superresolution imaging at near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths within spectral windows of maximal biological transparency. Avalanching nanoparticles (ANPs) can be pumped by continuous-wave or pulsed lasers and exhibit all of the defining features of PA. These hallmarks include excitation power thresholds, long rise time at threshold, and a dominant excited-state absorption that is >13,000x larger than ground-state absorption. Beyond the avalanching threshold, ANP emission scales nonlinearly with the 26th power of pump intensity. This enables the realization of photon-avalanche single-beam superresolution imaging (PASSI), achieving sub-70 nm spatial resolution using only simple scanning confocal microscopy and before any computational analysis. Pairing their steep nonlinearity with existing superresolution techniques and computational methods, ANPs allow for imaging with higher resolution and at ca. 100-fold lower excitation intensities than is possible with other probes. The low PA threshold and exceptional photostability of ANPs also suggest their utility in a diverse array of applications including sub-wavelength bioimaging, IR detection, temperature and pressure transduction, neuromorphic computing, and quantum optics., 14 pages, 4 figures

Broadband optoelectronics such as artificial light harvesting technologies necessitate efficient and, ideally, tunable coupling of excited states over a wide range of energies. In monolayer MoS2, a prototypical two-dimensional layered semiconductor, the excited state manifold spans the visible electromagnetic spectrum and is comprised of an interconnected network of excitonic and free-carrier excitations. Here, photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy is used to reveal the energetic and spatial dependence of broadband excited state coupling to the ground-state luminescent excitons of monolayer MoS2. Photoexcitation of the direct band gap excitons is found to strengthen with increasing energy, demonstrating that interexcitonic coupling across the Brillouin zone is more efficient than previously reported, and thus bolstering the import and appeal of these materials for broadband optoelectronic applications. We study the transient optical response of monolayer MoS 2 with an unprecedented temporal resolution. From the build-up dynamics of the transient signal around A/B excitonic peaks we directly extract the characteristic time-scale for exciton formation process, which ranges between 15 and 35 fs.

Reducing the size of lasers to microscale dimensions enables new technologies1 that are specifically tailored for operation in confined spaces ranging from ultra-high-speed microprocessors2 to live brain tissue3. However, reduced cavity sizes increase optical losses and require greater input powers to reach lasing thresholds. Multiphoton-pumped lasers4-7 that have been miniaturized using nanomaterials such as lanthanide-doped upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs)8 as lasing media require high pump intensities to achieve ultraviolet and visible emission and therefore operate under pulsed excitation schemes. Here, we make use of the recently described energy-looping excitation mechanism in Tm3+-doped UCNPs9 to achieve continuous-wave upconverted lasing action in stand-alone microcavities at excitation fluences as low as 14 kW cm-2. Continuous-wave lasing is uninterrupted, maximizing signal and enabling modulation of optical interactions10. By coupling energy-looping nanoparticles to whispering-gallery modes of polystyrene microspheres, we induce stable lasing for more than 5 h at blue and near-infrared wavelengths simultaneously. These microcavities are excited in the biologically transmissive second near-infrared (NIR-II) window and are small enough to be embedded in organisms, tissues or devices. The ability to produce continuous-wave lasing in microcavities immersed in blood serum highlights practical applications of these microscale lasers for sensing and illumination in complex biological environments.

Optoelectronic excitations in monolayer ${\mathrm{MoS}}_{2}$ manifest from a hierarchy of electrically tunable, Coulombic free-carrier and excitonic many-body phenomena. Investigating the fundamental interactions underpinning these phenomena---critical to both many-body physics exploration and device applications---presents challenges, however, due to a complex balance of competing optoelectronic effects and interdependent properties. Here, optical detection of bound- and free-carrier photoexcitations is used to directly quantify carrier-induced changes of the quasiparticle band gap and exciton binding energies. The results explicitly disentangle the competing effects and highlight longstanding theoretical predictions of large carrier-induced band gap and exciton renormalization in two-dimensional semiconductors.

We present direct synthesis of high quality single-layer MoS 2 array on substrates with pre-deposited sulfur seeds for the first time with strong Raman signals of diluted Rhodamine 6G (R6G) due to Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS). This work has following unprecedented accomplishments: (1) the usages of sulfur terminated substrate for the synthesis of CVD MoS 2 array; (2) SERS using the monolayer MoS 2 array with partially bowtie structures. (3) First time demonstration of SERS and photoluminescence (PL) on MoS 2 covered with Al 2 O 3 , which address the possibility of the physical enhancement mechanism. As such, the newly developed processes can enable large scale growth of MoS 2 for applications in bio-chemical sensing, and bring great inspiration in the 2D chalcogenide SERS mechanism.

We have been interested in the analytical and experimental study of real-life bird song sources for several years. Bird sources are characterized by either a single or multiple bird vocalizations independent of each other or in response to others. The sources may be physically-stationary or exhibit movements and the signals are wide-band in frequency and often intermittent with pauses and possibly restarting with repeating previously used songs or with new songs. Thus, the detection, classification, and 2D or 3D localization of these birds pose challenging signal and array problems. Due to the fact that some birds can mimic other birds, time-domain waveform characterization may not be sufficient for determining the number of birds. Similarly, due to the intermittent nature of the vocalizations, data collected over a long period cannot be used naively. Thus, it is necessary to use short-time Fourier transform (STFT) to fully exploit the intricate natures of the time and frequency properties of these sources and displayed on a spectrogram. Various dominant spectral data over the relevant frames are used to form sample covariance matrices. Eigenvectors associated with the decompositions of these matrices for these spectral indices can be used to provide 2D/3D DOA estimations of the sources over different frames for intermittent sources. Proper cluttering of these data can be used to perform enhanced detection, classification, and localization of multiple bird sources. Two sets of collected bird data will be used to demonstrate these claims.

An ultraviolet detector is demonstrated through a whole-wafer, thin diamond film transfer process to realize the heterojunction between graphene and microcrystalline diamond (MCD). Conventional direct transfer processes fail to deposit graphene onto the top surface of the MCD film. However, it is found that the 2 µm thick MCD diamond film can be easily peeled off from the growth silicon substrate to expose its smooth backside for the graphene transfer process for high-quality graphene/MCD heterojunctions. A vertical graphene/MCD/metal structure is constructed as the photodiode device using graphene as the transparent top electrode for solar-blind ultraviolet sensing with high responsivity and gain factor. As such, this material system and device architecture could serve as the platform for next-generation optoelectronic systems.

High-quality and defect-free GaAs were successfully grown via molecular beam epitaxy on silicon dioxide patterned Si(111) substrates by a two-step growth technique. Compared with the one-step approach, the two-step growth scheme has been found to be a better pathway to obtain a superior-quality GaAs on Si. Taking advantages of low energy for both Si(111) surface and GaAs/Si(111) interface, the two-step grown GaAs of total ∼175 nm atop patterned Si(111) substrates exhibits atomically smooth surface morphology, single crystallininty and a remarkably low defect density. A low-temperature GaAs nucleation layer of the two-step growth helps relieve the misfit stress by accommodating the misfit dislocations at the very adjacent GaAs/Si interface. Drain current of AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) is measured to decrease/increase with in-plane tensile/compressive external strain. Such a trend is opposite to the conventional theory of direct piezoelectric effect on 2-D electron gas (2DEG). The reason is found to be the dependence of nickel gate barrier height on external strain, which strongly affects HEMTs’ threshold voltage and 2DEG concentration. The Ni/AlGaN interface states are proposed to be responsible for strain-induced gate barrier variations, which are important for device performances and sensor applications.

A new solar tracker is designed and tested. The solar tracker is an all-weather solar machine aiming at the sun automatically with high precision. An embedded CPU is used as the control unit, calculating the position of the sun according to geography. Two light intensity detecting chips are used; one of them is to measure the ambient light intensity while the other is to check whether the tracker is directed to the sun well. The result of the first chip determines whether the second chip will be put into use. In this way it is guaranteed that the tracker operates well either with sufficient ambient light or not. Two step motors are used to drive the solar energy collector. The solar tracker has been produced and tested, showing satisfying tracking effect.

We consider the determination of the location (source localization) of a disturbance source which emits acoustic and/or seismic signals. We devise an enhanced approximate maximum-likelihood (AML) algorithm to process data collected at acoustic sensors (microphones) belonging to an array of, non-collocated but otherwise identical, sensors. The approximate maximum-likelihood algorithm exploits the time-delay-of-arrival of acoustic signals at different sensors, and yields the source location. For processing the seismic signals, we investigate two distinct algorithms, both of which process data collected at a single measurement station comprising a triaxial accelerometer, to determine direction-of-arrival. The direction-of-arrivals determined at each sensor station are then combined using a weighted least-squares approach for source localization. The first of the direction-of-arrival estimation algorithms is based on the spectral decomposition of the covariance matrix, while the second is based on surface wave analysis. Both of the seismic source localization algorithms have their roots in seismology; and covariance matrix analysis had been successfully employed in applications where the source and the sensors (array) are typically separated by planetary distances (i.e., hundreds to thousands of kilometers). Here, we focus on very-short distances (e.g., less than one hundred meters) instead, with an outlook to applications in multi-modal surveillance, including target detection, tracking, and zone intrusion. We demonstrate the utility of the aforementioned algorithms through a series of open-field tests wherein we successfully localize wideband acoustic and/or seismic sources. We also investigate a basic strategy for fusion of results yielded by acoustic and seismic arrays.

Two types of optical sensor based on one-dimensional Photonic Crystal (PhC) stack nanobeam cavity has been designed, fabricated and characterized. One-dimensional PhC stack nanobeam cavity with measured Q -factors up to 27000 and a sensitivity of 270nm/RIU has been demonstrated. Then, we introduce a finite width slot between two periodic arrays of the dielectric stacks. Thus, the majority of optical field distributes in the slotted low-index area and the light matter interaction with the analytes has been enhanced. A sensitivity of 410nm/RIU has been achieved while maintaining the Q-factors near 10 4 .

This work presents a graphene-diamond-metal thin film system as ultraviolet (UV) light sensor on a flexible substrate. New scientific and engineering breakthroughs are: (1) first experimental investigation of electrical and optical properties of carbon-based sp2-sp3 (graphene-diamond) junction; (2) a peel-and-stick fabrication process to make flexible diamond thin films from CVD-grown micro crystalline diamond (MCD) wafers; and (3) a sandwich-like vertical sensor structure with graphene as a transparent top electrode, and metal (Ti-Au) as an ohmic bottom contact electrode. As such, the proposed detector/architecture can open up a new class of scheme to build diamond-based, attachable, portable and wearable optoelectronic systems.

In this paper, we present simulation and experimental studies of localization and source separation for a bio-complexity bird study based on a new wireless acoustic array node named Voxnet. The Approximate Maximum Likelihood (AML) method is used to estimate blindly the direction-of-arrivals (DOAs) of sources which can be used to both locate the sources using a DOA-based localization method and generate the steering vectors in order to separate the sources via beamforming. Simulation and measured data confirmed the proper operations of the AML-based 2-D/3-D localization and 2-D source separation, as well as the Voxnet hardware nodes.

This paper considers array processing for wideband signals. The optimization techniques and associated performance results correspond to steerable but fixed beam microphone arrays, to be used in hearing aid applications, both in free-space and reverberant conditions. We first review the results on maximum energy (ME) broadband arrays. We subsequently formulate optimization criteria for array subband processing. The uniformly spaced subband and the non-uniformly spaced subband using quadrature mirror filter approaches are treated. Finally, various simulation results for free-space and reverberant conditions are presented to demonstrate the usefulness of this class of microphone arrays, as well as the feasibility of quadrature mirror filter-based subband processing.

The QR decomposition recursive least-squares (QRD RLS) algorithm for mapping onto a systolic array for signal processing and communication applications is considered. Detailed analysis is presented to show that the rotation parameters of the RLS algorithm based on the Givens rotation method will eventually reach the quasi-steady-state if the forgetting factor lambda is very close to 1. With this model, the dynamic range of each processing cell can be derived, and from this a proper wordlength can be chosen to ensure correct operation of the algorithm. The proposed solutions are simple and effective. Simulations have demonstrated that the wordlengths chosen by the proposed dynamic range work well. The stability of the QRD RLS algorithm is demonstrated under a finite-precision implementation with this observation. Finally, the missing error detection and false alarm problems are considered based on the results obtained from the model. The wordlength is overflow-free without missing error detection and false alarm problems. The results in this study are of practical importance. Not only can a finite-precision QRD RLS systolic array be designed with a minimum wordlength that ensures correct operations, but also a fault-tolerant system that can detect a given error size and is false-alarm-free under the quantization effect can be provided. >

We investigate the maximum likelihood (ML) direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of multiple wideband sources in the presence of unknown nonuniform sensor noise. New closed-form expression for the direction estimation Cramér-Rao-Bound (CRB) has been derived. The performance of the conventional wideband uniform ML estimator under nonuniform noise has been studied. In order to mitigate the performance degradation caused by the nonuniformity of the noise, a new deterministic wideband nonuniform ML DOA estimator is derived and two associated processing algorithms are proposed. The first algorithm is based on an iterative procedure which stepwise concentrates the log-likelihood function with respect to the DOAs and the noise nuisance parameters, while the second is a noniterative algorithm that maximizes the derived approximately concentrated log-likelihood function. The performance of the proposed algorithms is tested through extensive computer simulations. Simulation results show the stepwise-concentrated ML algorithm (SC-ML) requires only a few iterations to converge and both the SC-ML and the approximately-concentrated ML algorithm (AC-ML) attain a solution close to the derived CRB at high signal-to-noise ratio.

This paper deals with the problem of estimating the directions-of-arrival (DOA) of multiple wideband sources using an array of sensors. While a variety of estimation techniques have been proposed in the literature, the maximum-likelihood (ML) DOA estimator has been shown to have superior performance under many challenging environments. In this paper, we propose a novel implementation for ML DOA estimator based on the cross-entropy (CE) method. Simulation results show the CE algorithm converges to the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) in all scenarios within several iterations and the convergence speed is insensitive to the coherence of sources.

We present distributed algorithms for sensor localization based on the Gauss-Newton method. Each sensor updates its estimated location by computing the Gauss-Newton step for a local cost function and choosing a proper step length. Then it transmits the updated estimate to all the neighboring sensors. The proposed algorithms provide non-increasing values of a global cost function. It is shown in the paper that the algorithms have computational complexity of O(n) per iteration and a reduced communication cost over centralized algorithms.
