3. Can buckling account for the features seen in graphite's Raman spectra?

Abstract

Raman scattering data were collected on graphite monochromator. Spectra were interpreted in terms of the space group $P6_3mc$, a subgroup of space group $P6_3/mmc$. The latter has commonly been used for the interpretation of Raman scattering data. Space group $P6_3mc$ corresponds to the buckling of graphene sheets and is consistent with many spectral features. Both the first and second order scattering were considered. Many first order results (most notably the assignments of the band at 1350 and the peak at 1620 cm$^{-1}$) were found to agree with previous observations [Y. Kawashima and G. Katagiri, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{66}, 104109 (2002)] carried out on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite samples. To check the consistency of the model, symmetry analysis was applied to the second order spectra. Also a simple test for buckling model was done., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures (one color figure and one black and white figure)

The high-resolution neutron powder diffraction data of the lead hafnate titanate pb(Hf(sub x)Ti(sub 1)-(sub x))O(sub 3) powder with 0.10 (less than equal to) X (less than equal to ) 0.50 are analyzed using Rietveld refinement. It is observed that the structural features of transition sequences and lattice parameters are similar to the lead zinconate titanate (PZT) ceramics

Abstract

The temperature dependence of the lower critical fields of Hc1(T) of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d and YBa2Cu3O7-d single crystals was studied for both orientations of the applied fields, parallel and perpendicular to the c axis. The magnetization curves of the samples were measured by utilizing a superconducting quantum interference device. Findings indicated that the temperature dependence of the coherence length in the ab plane plays an important role.

Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the magnetic properties of Y/Pb dopped single-crystal Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(sub 8+d) superconductors. By analyzing the magnetization curves of the superconductors through a SQUID magnetometer, the close correlation of magnetic response and carrier concentration was revealed. It was also noted that the samples' lower critical field and pinning force increase with the rise of carrier concentration in the CuO2 plane.

Abstract

Signal patterns induced in ceramic superconductors by pulsed magnetic fields to measure critical current density, Jc, either decrease monotonically to zero as a time function or show a cyclic pattern tending to zero. Jc is evaluated by simulating signal patterns from magnetization relations in the Bean and Kim-Anderson reproduction models. Jc evaluation is achieved by considering an external field that depends on the simulated signal profiles.

Abstract

Controlled/living radical polymerization was examined with the use of magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) prepared through various processes, including hydrothermal synthesis, a bioinspired process, and magnetotactic bacteria. Prior to the use of various types of Fe3O4, commercially available Fe3O4 was employed as a heterogeneous catalyst for styrene polymerization in conjunction with an alkyl halide as an initiator. Under appropriately optimized conditions, with the addition of Ph3P in a solvent mixture of toluene and DMF, the polymerization proceeded in a well-controlled manner. In addition, solid Fe3O4 was recovered using a magnetic approach and was reused for a polymerization reaction. The effects of stirring on the polymerization rate suggest that the surface of Fe3O4 is responsible for the catalysis in polymerization. Fe3O4 samples prepared through various processes were then used for styrene polymerization and showed different activities depending on the preparation process. In particular, Fe3O4 prepared through hydrothermal synthesis exhibited a much higher activity compared with commercial Fe3O4.
