Magnon spin currents in the ferrimagnetic garnet Tb3Fe5O12 with 4f electrons were examined through the spin-Seebeck effect and neutron scattering measurements. The compound shows a magnetic compensation, where the spin-Seebeck signal reverses above and below Tcomp = 249.5(4) K. Unpolarized neutron scattering unveils two major magnon branches with finite energy gaps, which are well-explained in the framework of spin-wave theory. Their temperature dependencies and the direction of the precession motion of magnetic moments, i.e. magnon polarization, defined using polarized neutrons, explain the reversal at Tcomp and decay of the spin-Seebeck signals at low temperatures. We illustrate an example that momentum- and energy-resolved microscopic information is a prerequisite to understanding the magnon spin current., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Crystal and magnetic structures of the mineral centennialite CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O are investigated by means of synchrotron x-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction measurements complemented by density functional theory (DFT) and pseudofermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) calculations. CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O crystallizes in the $P\bar{3}m1$ space group and Cu$^{2+}$ ions form a geometrically perfect kagome network with antiferromagnetic $J_1$. No intersite disorder between Cu$^{2+}$ and Ca$^{2+}$ ions is detected. CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O enters a magnetic long-range ordered state below $T_\text{N}=7.2$~K, and the $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ magnetic structure with negative vector spin chirality is obtained. The ordered moment at 0.3~K is suppressed to $0.58(2)\mu_\text{B}$. Our DFT calculations indicate the presence of antiferromagnetic $J_2$ and ferromagnetic $J_d$ superexchange couplings of a strength which places the system at the crossroads of three magnetic orders (at the classical level) and a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ PFFRG analysis shows a dominance of $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ type magnetic correlations, consistent with and indicating proximity to the observed $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ spin structure. The results suggest that this material is located close to a quantum critical point and is a good realization of a $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_d$ kagome antiferromagnet., Comment: 4 figures and supplemental materials

We are developing a neutron polarizer with polarized $^3$He gas, referred to as a $^3$He spin filter, based on the Spin Exchange Optical Pumping (SEOP) for polarized neutron scattering experiments at Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). A $^3$He gas-filling station was constructed at J-PARC, and several $^3$He cells with long spin relaxation times have been fabricated using the gas-filling station. A laboratory has been prepared in the MLF beam hall for polarizing $^3$He cells, and compact pumping systems with laser powers of 30~W and 110~W, which can be installed onto a neutron beamline, have been developed. A $^3$He polarization of 85% was achieved at a neutron beamline by using the pumping system with the 110~W laser. Recently, the first user experiment utilizing the $^3$He spin filter was conducted, and there have been several more since then. We investigated the low-energy incommensurate (IC) magnetic fluctuations in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ by the high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements and random phase approximation (RPA) calculations. We observed a spin resonance with energy of $\hbar\omega_\text{res}=0.56$~meV centered at a characteristic wavevector $\mathbf{Q}_\text{res}=(0.3, 0.3, 0.5)$. The resonance energy corresponds well to the superconducting gap $2\Delta=0.56$~meV estimated by the tunneling spectroscopy. The spin resonance shows the $L$ modulation with a maximum at around $L = 0.5$. The $L$ modulated intensity of the spin resonance and our RPA calculations indicate that the superconducting gaps regarding the quasi-one-dimensional $\alpha$ and $\beta$ sheets at the Fermi surfaces have the horizontal line nodes. These results may set a strong constraint on the pairing symmetry of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. We investigate the spin rotational structure of magnetic skyrmions in a tetragonal polar magnet VOSe2O5 via polarized small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Spin polarization analysis of the scattered neutrons provides consistent evidence for the cycloidal spin modulation in all the incommensurate phases at zero and non-zero magnetic field along the c axis, including the triangular skyrmion-lattice phase. In the vicinity of the skyrmion phase, we performed extensive SANS measurements to unravel a field-induced incommensurate phase (IC-2 state). We measure the mode-resolved direction of the precessional motion of the magnetic order, i.e., magnon polarization, via the chiral term of inelastic polarized neutron scattering spectra. The magnon polarisation is important in spintronics, affecting thermodynamic properties such as the magnitude and sign of the spin Seebeck effect. The observation of both signs of magnon polarization in Y3Fe5O12 also gives direct proof of its ferrimagnetic nature. CuAl2O4 is a normal spinel oxide having quantum spin, S=1/2 for Cu2+. It is a rather unique feature that the Cu2+ ions of CuAl2O4 sit at a tetrahedral position, not like the usual octahedral position for many oxides. At low temperatures, it exhibits all the thermodynamic evidence of a quantum spin glass. For example, the polycrystalline CuAl2O4 shows a cusp centered at ~2 K in the low-field dc magnetization data and a clear frequency dependence in the ac magnetic susceptibility while it displays logarithmic relaxation behavior in a time dependence of the magnetization. At the same time, there is a peak at ~2.3 K in the heat capacity, which shifts towards higher temperature with magnetic fields. On the other hand, there is no evidence of new superlattice peaks in the high-resolution neutron powder diffraction data when cooled from 40 to 0.4 K. This implies that there is no long-ranged magnetic order down to 0.4 K, thus confirming a spin glass-like ground state for CuAl2O4. Interestingly, there is no sign of structural distortion either although Cu2+ is a Jahn-Teller active ion. Thus, we claim that an orbital liquid state is the most likely ground state in CuAl2O4. Of further interest, it also exhibits a large frustration parameter, f = Theta_CW/Tm ~67, one of the largest values reported for spinel oxides. Our observations suggest that CuAl2O4 should be a rare example of a frustrated quantum spin glass with a good candidate for an orbital liquid state., Comment: J. Phys. We present a comprehensive Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) and Neutron Spin Echo Spectroscopy (NSE) study of the structural and dynamical aspects of the helimagnetic transition in Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si with $x$ = 0.30. In contrast to the sharp transition observed in the archetype chiral magnet MnSi, the transition in Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si is gradual and long-range helimagnetic ordering coexists with short-range correlations over a wide temperature range. The dynamics are more complex than in MnSi and involve long relaxation times with a stretched exponential relaxation which persists even under magnetic field. These results in conjunction with an analysis of the hierarchy of the relevant length scales show that the helimagnetic transition in Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si differs substantially from the transition in MnSi and question the validity of a universal approach to the helimagnetic transition in chiral magnets.

Small angle neutron scattering measurements on a bulk single crystal of the doped chiral magnet Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si with $x$=0.3 reveal a pronounced effect of the magnetic history and cooling rates on the magnetic phase diagram. The extracted phase diagrams are qualitatively different for zero and field cooling and reveal a metastable skyrmion lattice phase outside the A-phase for the latter case. These thermodynamically metastable skyrmion lattice correlations coexist with the conical phase and can be enhanced by increasing the cooling rate. They appear in a wide region of the phase diagram at temperatures below the $A$-phase but also at fields considerably smaller or higher than the fields required to stabilize the A-phase.

We present a systematic study of the ac susceptibility of the chiral magnet Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si with $x$ = 0.30 covering four orders of magnitude in frequencies from 0.1 Hz to 1 kHz, with particular emphasis to the pronounced history dependence. Characteristic relaxation times ranging from a few milliseconds to tens of seconds are observed around the skyrmion lattice A-phase, the helical-to-conical transition and in a region above $T_C$. The distribution of relaxation frequencies around the A-phase is broad, asymmetric and originates from multiple coexisting relaxation processes. The pronounced dependence of the magnetic phase diagram on the magnetic history and cooling rates as well as the asymmetric frequency dependence and slow dynamics suggest more complicated physical phenomena in Fe$_{0.7}$Co$_{0.3}$Si than in other chiral magnets.

We have performed simultaneous measurements of magnetic chirality by using polarized neutrons and electric polarization along the b-axis of single crystals of YMn$^{4+}$(Mn$_{1-x}$Ga$_{x}$)$^{3+}$O$_{5}$ with $x=0.047$ and 0.12, in which nonmagnetic Ga-ions dilute Mn$^{3+}$ spins. The $x=0.047$ sample exhibits high-temperature incommensurate (HT-ICM), commensurate (CM), and low-temperature incommensurate (LT-ICM) magnetic phases in order of decreasing temperature, whereas the $x=0.12$ sample exhibits only HT-ICM and LT-ICM phases. Here, the CM and LT-ICM phases are ferroelectric and weak-ferroelectric, respectively. Measurements conducted under zero field heating after various field-cooling conditions evidence that the microscopic mechanisms of the spin-driven ferroelectricity in the CM and LT-ICM phases are different: the magnetic chirality of Mn$^{4+}$ cycloidal spins plays a dominant role in the LT-ICM phase, whereas the magnetic exchange striction by the Mn$^{4+}$-Mn$^{3+}$ chain plays a dominant role in the CM phase. The polarization of YMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$ flips upon CM to LT-ICM phase transition because the ferroelectricity driven by the magnetic chirality and the exchange striction provides opposite directions of polarization., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Magnetic excitations in CuCrO$_{2}$, CuCr$_{0.97}$Mg$_{0.03}$O$_{2}$, Cu$_{0.85}$Ag$_{0.15}$CrO$_{2}$, and CuCr$_{0.85}$Al$_{0.15}$O$_{2}$ have been studied by powder inelastic neutron scattering to elucidate the element substitution effects on the spin dynamics in the Heisenberg triangular-lattice antiferromagnet CuCrO$_{2}$. The magnetic excitations in CuCr$_{0.97}$Mg$_{0.03}$O$_{2}$ consist of a dispersive component and a flat component. Though this feature is apparently similar to CuCrO$_{2}$, the energy structure of the excitation spectrum shows some difference from that in CuCrO$_{2}$. On the other hand, in Cu$_{0.85}$Ag$_{0.15}$CrO$_{2}$ and CuCr$_{0.85}$Al$_{0.15}$O$_{2}$ the flat components are much reduced, the low-energy parts of the excitation spectra become intense, and additional low-energy diffusive spin fluctuations are induced. A helical spin texture is of great current interest for a host of novel spin-dependent transport phenomena. We report a rich variety of nontrivial, helimagnetic phases in the simple cubic perovskite SrFeO3 under magnetic fields up to 42 T. Magnetic and resistivity measurements revealed that the proper-screw spin phase proposed for SrFeO3 can be subdivided into at least five kinds of ordered phases. Near the multicritical point, an unconventional anomalous Hall effect was found to show up and was interpreted as due to a possible long-period noncoplanar spin texture with scalar spin chirality., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Physical Review B in press

We report electrical resistivity measurements and neutron diffraction studies under magnetic fields of Bi$_{1.75}$Pb$_{0.35}$Sr$_{1.90}$Cu$_{0.91}$Fe$_{0.09}$O$_{6+y}$, in which hole carriers are overdoped. This compound shows short-range incommensurate magnetic correlation with incommensurability $\delta=0.21$, whereas a Fe-free compound shows no magnetic correlation. Resistivity shows an up turn at low temperature in the form of $ln(1/T)$ and shows no superconductivity. We observe reduction of resistivity by applying magnetic fields (i.e., a negative magnetoresistive effect) at temperatures below the onset of short-range magnetic correlation. Application of magnetic fields also suppresses the Fe induced incommensurate magnetic correlation. We compare and contrast these observations with two different models: 1) stripe order, and 2) dilute magnetic moments in a metallic alloy, with associated Kondo behavior. We study $S=1/2$ dimer excitation in a coupled chain and dimer compound Cu$_2$Fe$_2$Ge$_4$O$_{13} by inelastic neutron scattering technique. The Zeeman split of the dimer triplet by a staggered field is observed at low temperature. With the increase of temperature the effect of random field is detected by a drastic broadening of the triplet excitation. We report polarized neutron scattering studies of spin-wave excitations and spin fluctuations in the S=5/2 kagome lattice antiferromagnet KFe3(OH)6(SO4)2 (jarosite). Inelastic polarized neutron scattering measurements at 10 K on a single crystal sample reveal two spin gaps, associated with in-plane and out-of-plane excitations. The polarization analysis of quasi-elastic scattering at 67 K shows in-plane spin fluctuations with XY symmetry, consistent with the disappearance of the in-plane gap above the Neel temperature T_N = 65 K. Spin correlations in the overdoped region of Bi1.75Pb0.35Sr1.90CuO6+z have been explored with Fe-doped single crystals characterized by neutron scattering, muon-spin-rotation (muSR) spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Static incommensurate spin correlations induced by the Fe spins are revealed by elastic neutron scattering. The resultant incommensurability delta is unexpectedly large (~0.2 r.l.u.), as compared with delta ~ 1/8 in overdoped superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4. Intriguingly, the large delta in this overdoped region is close to the hole concentration p. This result is reminiscent of the delta ~ p trend observed in underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4; however, it is inconsistent with the saturation of delta in the latter compound in the overdoped regime. While our findings in Fe-doped Bi1.75Pb0.35Sr1.90CuO6+z support the commonality of incommensurate spin correlations in high-Tc cuprate superconductors, they also suggest that the magnetic response might be dominated by a distinct mechanism in the overdoped region., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. Low energy spin fluctuations are studied for the electron-doped Fe-based superconductor LaFeAsO(1-x)F(x) by inelastic neutron scattering up to the energy transfer of w = 15 meV using polycrystalline samples. Superconducting samples (x=0.057, Tc=25 K and x=0.082, Tc=29 K) show dynamical spin susceptibility chi"(w) almost comparable with the parent sample's. However chi"(w) is almost vanished in the x=0.158 sample where the superconductivity is highly suppressed. These results are compatible with the theoretical suggestions that the spin fluctuation plays an important role for the superconductivity., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Polarized neutron diffraction experiments have been performed on multiferroic materials $R$Mn$_{2}$O$_{5}$ ($R=$Ho, Er) under electric fields in the ferroelectric commensurate (CM) and the low-temperature incommensurate (LT-ICM) phases, where the former has the highest electric polarization and the latter has reduced polarization. It is found that, after cooling in electric fields down to the CM phase, the magnetic chirality is proportional to the electric polarization. Also we confirmed that the magnetic chirality can be switched by the polarity of the electric polarization in both the CM and LT-ICM phases. These facts suggest an intimate coupling between the magnetic chirality and the electric polarization. However, upon the transition from the CM to LT-ICM phase, the reduction of the electric polarization is not accompanied by any reduction of the magnetic chirality, implying that the CM and LT-ICM phases contain different mechanisms of the magnetoelectric coupling., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Charge excitations were studied for stipe-ordered 214 compounds, La$_{5/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$NiO$_{4}$ and 1/8-doped La$_{2}$(Ba, Sr)$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in hard x-ray regime. We have observed charge excitations at the energy transfer of 1 eV with the momentum transfer corresponding to the charge stripe spatial period both for the diagonal (nikelate) and parallel (cuprates) stripes. These new excitations can be interpreted as a collective stripe excitation or charge excitonic mode to a stripe-related in-gap state., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

By combining neutron four-circle diffraction and polarized neutron diffraction techniques we have determined the complex spin structures of a multiferroic, YMn2O5, that exhibits two ferroelectric phases at low temperatures. The obtained magnetic structure has spiral components in both the low temperature ferroelectric phases that are magnetically commensurate and incommensurate, respectively. Among proposed microscopic theories for the magneto-electric coupling, our results are consistent with both the spin-current model that requires a magnetic transverse (cycloidal) spiral structure in order to induce a spontaneous electric polarization and the magneto-restriction model. Our results also explain why the electric polarization changes at the commensurate-to-incommensurate phase transition.

Recently, two consecutive phase transitions were observed, upon cooling, in an antiferromagnetic spinel GeNi$_2$O$_4$ at $T_{N1}=12.1$ K and $T_{N2}=11.4$ K, respectively \cite{matsuno, crawford}. Using unpolarized and polarized elastic neutron scattering we show that the two transitions are due to the existence of frustrated minority spins in this compound. Upon cooling, at $T_{N1}$ the spins on the $<111>$ \kagome planes order ferromagnetically in the plane and antiferromagnetically between the planes (phase I), leaving the spins on the $<111>$ triangular planes that separate the \kagome planes frustrated and disordered. At the lower $T_{N2}$, the triangular spins also order in the $<111>$ plane (phase II). We also present a scenario involving exchange interactions that qualitatively explains the origin of the two purely magnetic phase transitions.

Cu$_2$Fe$_2$Ge$_4$O$_{13}$ is a bicomponent compound that consists of Cu dimers and Fe chains with separate energy scale. By inelastic neutron scattering technique with high-energy resolution we observed the indirect Fe - Fe exchange coupling by way of the Cu dimers. The obtained parameters of the effective indirect interaction and related superexchange interactions are consistent with those estimated semi-statically. The consistency reveals that the Cu dimers play the role of nonmagnetic media in the indirect magnetic interaction., Comment: to be published in PRB rapid communication

KCuCl$_3$ is a three dimensionally coupled spin dimer system, which undergoes a pressure-induced quantum phase transition from a gapped ground state to an antiferromagnetic state at a critical pressure of $P_{\rm c} \simeq 8.2$ kbar. Magnetic excitations in KCuCl$_3$ at a hydrostatic pressure of 4.7 kbar have been investigated by conducting neutron inelastic scattering experiments using a newly designed cylindrical high-pressure clamp cell. A well-defined single excitation mode is observed. The softening of the excitation mode due to the applied pressure is clearly observed. Polarized neutron inelastic scattering experiments have been carried out in the quasi-1D Ising-like antiferromagnet TlCoCl$_3$. We observed the longitudinal magnetic fluctuation $S_{zz} (Q, \omega)$ for the spin-wave excitation continuum, which has not been observed in the unpolarized neutron inelastic scattering experiments of the quasi-1D Ising-like antiferromagnets CsCoCl$_3$ and TlCoCl$_3$ so far, together with the transverse magnetic fluctuation $S_{xx} (Q, \omega)$. We compared both obtained intensities of $S_{xx} (Q, \omega)$ and $S_{zz} (Q, \omega)$ with the perturbation theory from the pure Ising limit by Ishimura and Shiba, and a semi-quantitative agreement was found., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, jpsj2.cls, to be published in J. Co-oxides beta-Na0.5CoO2 and gamma-K0.5CoO2 have been prepared by the Na de-intercalation from alpha-NaCoO2 and by the floating-zone method, respectively. It has been found that successive phase transitions take place at temperatures Tc1 and Tc2 in both systems. The appearance of the internal magnetic field at Tc1 with decreasing temperature T indicates that the antiferromagnetic order exists at T < Tc1, as in gamma-Na0.5CoO2. For beta-Na0.5CoO2, the transition temperatures and the NMR parameters determined from the data taken for magnetically ordered state are similar to those of gamma-Na0.5CoO2, indicating that the difference of the stacking ways of the CoO2 layers between these systems do not significantly affect their physical properties. For gamma-K0.5CoO2, the quantitative difference of the physical quantities are found from those of beta- and gamma-Na0.5CoO2. The difference between the values of Tci (i = 1 and 2) of these systems might be explained by considering the distance between CoO2 layers., Comment: 8 pages, 14 figures, 1 Table

Neutron inelastic scattering measurements have been performed in order to investigate the magnetic excitations in the quasi-1D Ising-like antiferromagnet TlCoCl$_3$. We observed the magnetic excitation, which corresponds to the spin-wave excitation continuum corresponding to the domain-wall pair excitation in the 1D Ising-like antiferromagnet. According to the Ishimura-Shiba theory, we analyzed the observed spin-wave excitation, and the exchange constant $2J$ and the anistropy $\epsilon$ were estimated as 14.7 meV and 0.14 in TlCoCl$_3$, respectively., Comment: 2 pages, 3 figures, jpsj2.cls, to be published in J. Using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering we show that a cubic spinel, CdCr$_2$O$_4$, undergoes an elongation along the c-axis ($c > a = b$) at its spin-Peierls-like phase transition at $T_N$ = 7.8 K. The N\'{e}el phase ($T < T_N$) has an incommesurate spin structure with a characteristic wave vector \textbf{Q}$_M$ = (0,$\delta$,1) with $\delta \sim$ 0.09 and with spins lying on the $ac$-plane. This is in stark contrast to another well-known Cr-based spinel, ZnCr$_2$O$_4$, that undergoes a c-axis contraction and a commensurate spin order. The magnetic excitations of the incommensurate N\'{e}el state has a weak anisotropy gap of 0.6 meV and it consists of at least three bands extending up to 5 meV., Comment: PRL in press

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the S=1 quasi-one-dimensional bond-alternating antiferromagnet Ni(C9D24N4)(NO2)ClO4 have been performed under magnetic fields below and above a critical field Hc at which the energy gap closes. Normal field dependece of Zeeman splitting of the excited triplet modes below Hc has been observed, but the highest mode is unusually small and smears out with increasing field. This can be explained by an interaction with a low-lying two magnon continuum at q=pi that is present in dimerized chains but absent in uniform ones. Above Hc, we find only one excited mode, in stark contrast with three massive excitations previously observed in the structurally similar Haldane-gap material NDMAP [A. Zheludev et al., Phys. Rev. Neutron scattering experiments were performed on the undoped and hole-doped Ca$_{2+x}$Y$_{2-x}$Cu$_5$O$_{10}$, which consists of ferromagnetic edge-sharing CuO$_2$ chains. It was previously reported that in the undoped Ca$_2$Y$_2$Cu$_5$O$_{10}$ there is an anomalous broadening of spin-wave excitations along the chain, which is caused mainly by the antiferromagnetic interchain interactions [Matsuda $et$ $al.$, Phys. A systematic study of temperature and hole concentration dependencies of the magnetic excitations shows that the magnetic excitations are softened and broadened with increasing temperature or doping holes irrespective of $Q$ direction. The broadening is larger at higher $Q$. A characteristic feature is that hole-doping is much more effective to broaden the excitations along the chain. It is also suggested that the intrachain interaction does not change so much with increasing temperature or doping although the anisotropic interaction and the interchain interaction are reduced. In the spin-glass phase ($x$=1.5) and nearly disordered phase ($x$=1.67) the magnetic excitations are much broadened in energy and $Q$. It is suggested that the spin-glass phase originates from the antiferromagnetic clusters, which are caused by the hole disproportionation., Comment: 8 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev. B

Under the hydrostatic pressure $P=1.48$ GPa, polarized neutron elastic scattering experiments have been carried out on the coupled spin dimer system TlCuCl$_3$ with the gapped ground state at ambient pressure. Pressure-induced magnetic ordering occurs at the transition temperature $T_{\rm N}=16.9$ K. As in the field-induced and impurity-induced magnetic ordered phases, the ordered moments lie in the $a-c$ plane just below $T_{\rm N}$. An additional spin reorientation (SR) phase transition was observed at $T_{\rm SR}=10$ K, where the ordered moments start to incline toward the b-axis. The field induced magnetic phase transitions of Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ were investigated by means of magnetization process and neutron scattering experiments. This system undergoes magnetic phase transition at Ne\'{e}l temperature $T_\mathrm{N}=1.4$ K at zero field, and exhibits the magnetization plateau at approximately one third of the saturation magnetization for the field directions $H\parallel b$ and $H\parallel c$. In the present study, additional symptom of the two-third magnetization plateau was found in the field derivative of the magnetization process. The magnetic structure was found to be incommensurate with the ordering vector $\boldsymbol{Q}=(0, 0.575, 0)$ at zero field. With increasing magnetic field parallel to the c-axis, the ordering vector increases continuously and is locked at $\boldsymbol{Q}=(0, 0.662, 0)$ in the plateau field range $13.1 \mathrm{T} < H < 14.4 \mathrm{T}$. This indicates that the collinear \textit{up-up-down} spin structure is stabilized by quantum fluctuation at the magnetization plateau., Comment: 6 pages, 4 Postscript figures, uses iopams.sty and IOPART.CLS

Neutron elastic and inelastic scattering measurements have been performed in order to investigate the spin structure and the magnetic excitations in the impurity-induced antiferromagnetic ordered phase of the doped spin gap system Tl(Cu$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$)Cl$_3$ with $x=0.03$. The magnetic Bragg reflections indicative of the ordering were observed at ${\pmb Q}=(h, 0, l)$ with integer $h$ and odd $l$ below $T_{\rm N}=3.45$ K. It was found that the spin structure of the impurity-induced antiferromagnetic ordered phase on average in Tl(Cu$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$)Cl$_3$ with $x=0.03$ is the same as that of the field-induced magnetic ordered phase for ${\pmb H} \parallel b$ in the parent compound TlCuCl$_3$. The triplet magnetic excitation was clearly observed in the $a^*$-$c^*$ plane and the dispersion relations of the triplet excitation were determined along four different directions. The lowest triplet excitation corresponding to the spin gap was observed at ${\pmb Q}=(h, 0, l)$ with integer $h$ and odd $l$, as observed in TlCuCl$_3$. It was also found that the spin gap increases steeply below $T_{\rm N}$ upon decreasing temperature. This strongly indicates that the impurity-induced antiferromagnetic ordering coexists with the spin gap state in Tl(Cu$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$)Cl$_3$ with $x=0.03$., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, 11 eps files, revtex style, will appear in Phys. NH4CuCl3 has two magnetization plateaus at one-quarter and three-quarters of the saturation magnetization, irrespective of the external field direction. Magnetic excitations in NH4CuCl3 have been investigated by means of neutron inelastic scattering experiments. The constant-Q energy scan profiles were collected in a*-c* plane. Two well-defined magnetic excitations were observed. The dispersion relations along four different directions were determined. Both excitations are found weakly dispersive. Neutron elastic scattering measurements have been performed under the hydrostatic pressure in order to investigate the spin structure of the pressure-induced magnetic ordering in the spin gap system TlCuCl$_3$. The polarization dependence of magnetic excitations in the quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnet BaCu2Si2O7 is studied as a function of momentum and energy transfer. The results of inelastic neutron scattering measurements are directly compared to semi-analytical calculations based on the chain-Mean Field and Random Phase approximations. A quantitative agreement between theoretically calculated and experimentally measured dynamic structure factors of transverse spin fluctuations is obtained. In contrast, substantial discrepancies are found for longitudinal polarization. This behavior is attributed to intrinsic limitations of the RPA that ignores correlation effects., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, submitted to PRB

A low-field spin flop transition in the quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnet \ba is exploited to study the polarization dependence of low-energy magnetic excitations. The measured longitudinal spectrum is best described as single broad continuum, with no sharp ``longitudinal mode'', in apparent contradiction with the commonly used chain-MF/RPA theories. The observed behavior is also quite different than that previously seen in the related \kcuf material, presumably due to a large difference in the relative strength of inter-chain interactions. The constant-$\it{\pmb Q}$ energy scan profiles were collected in the $a^*-c^*$ plane. A well-defined single magnetic excitation mode was observed. The dispersion relations along four different directions were determined. The lowest excitation occurs at ${\it{\pmb Q}}=(h, 0, l)$ with integer $h$ and odd $l$, as observed in KCuCl$_3$. A cluster series expansion up to the sixth order was applied to analyze the dispersion relations, and the individual exchange interactions were evaluated. The Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction partially lifts the magnetic frustration of the spin-1/2 oxide SrCu2(BO3)2. It explains the fine structure of the excited triplet state and its unusual magnetic field dependence, as observed in previous ESR and new neutron inelastic scattering experiments. We claim that it is mainly responsible for the dispersion. Neutron elastic scattering experiments have been performed on the spin gap system TlCuCl$_3$ in magnetic fields parallel to the $b$-axis. The magnetic Bragg peaks which indicate the field-induced N\'{e}el ordering were observed for magnetic field higher than the gap field $H_{\rm g}\approx 5.5$ T at $Q=(h, 0, l)$ with odd $l$ in the $a^*-c^*$ plane. The spin structure in the ordered phase was determined. Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering were used to study the ordered phase of the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnet ${\rm BaCu_{2}Si_{2}O_{7}}$. The previously proposed model for the low-temperature magnetic structure was confirmed. Spin wave dispersion along several reciprocal-space directions was measured and inter-chain, as well as in-chain exchange constants were determined. A small gap in the spin wave spectrum was observed and attributed to magnetic anisotropy effects. Inelastic neutron scattering is used to study transverse-polarized magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnet BaCu_2Si_2O_7, where the saturation value for the N\'eel order parameter is $m_0=0.12 \mu_{\rm B}$ per spin. At low energies the spectrum is totally dominated by resolution-limited spin wave-like excitations. An excitation continuum sets in above a well-defined threshold frequency. Experimental results are discussed in the context of current theories for weakly-interacting quantum half-integer spin chains., Comment: 4 pages 4 figures

We performed inelastic neutron scattering on the 2D Shastry-Sutherland system SrCu2(11BO3)2 with an exact dimer ground state. Three energy levels at around 3, 5 and 9 meV were observed at 1.7 K. The lowest excitation at 3.0 meV is almost dispersionless with a bandwidth of 0.2 meV at most, showing a significant constraint on a single-triplet hopping owing to the orthogonality of the neighboring dimers. In contrast, the correlated two-triplets excitations at 5 meV exhibit a more dispersive behavior., Comment: 12 pages, with 4 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev. Lett

Single-crystal neutron inelastic scattering was performed in order to investigate the magnetic excitations in the spin gap system TlCuCl$_3$. The constant-${\bf Q}$ energy scan profiles were collected in the $a^*-c^*$ plane. Three excitations are observed for $E{\leq}15$ meV. One of the excitations is identified to be magnetic excitation. The lowest magnetic excitation with $E\sim 0.5$ meV occurs at ${\bf Q}=(1, 0, 1)$, as observed in KCuCl$_3$. The dispersion relation of the magnetic excitation can be fitted to the dispersion formula derived from the weakly coupled dimer model. The intradimer interaction is evaluated as $J=5.23$ meV, which coincides with the value estimated from the susceptibility data. However, one of the interdimer interactions obtained is so large that the weakly coupled dimer model is broken down., Comment: 8 pages, revtex, 10 eps figures

Local antiferromagnetism coexists with superconductivity in the cuprates. Charge segregation provides a way to reconcile these properties. Direct evidence for modulated spin and charge densities has been found in neutron and X-ray scattering studies of Nd-doped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4). Here we discuss the nature of the modulation, and present some new results for a Zn-doped sample. The new antiferromagnetic (AF) compound BaCu_2Si_2O_7 is studied by magnetic susceptibility and neutron scattering techniques. The observed behavior is dominated by the presence of loosely coupled S=1/2 chains with the intrachain AF exchange constant J = 24.1 meV. Long-range Neel ordering is observed below Tn = 9.2 K. The results are discussed within the framework of the Mean Field-RPA model for weakly interacting quantum spin chains., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Neutron scattering experiments have been performed on Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ which consists of both chains and ladders of copper ions. We observed that the magnetic excitations from the CuO$_2$ chain have two branches and that both branches are weakly dispersive along the $a$ and $c$ axes. The $\omega$-$Q$ dispersion relation as well as the intensities can be reasonably described by a random phase approximation with intradimer coupling between next-nearest-neighbor copper spins $J$=11 meV, interdimer coupling along the c axis $J_c$=0.75 meV, and interdimer coupling along the a axis $J_a$=0.75 meV. The dimer configuration indicates a quasi-two-dimensional hole ordering, resulting in an ordering of magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ with spin-1/2 and nonmagnetic Cu, which forms the Zhang-Rice singlet.
