Abstract

Behavior of 14C-DDE (1, 1-dichloro-2, 2-bis (4-Chlorophenyl) Ethylene), a major degradation product of DDT (1, 1, 1-tricholoro-2, 2-bis (p-chlorophenyl) ethane), was studied in a model rice ecosystem. Samples of rice plant, algae, soil and seed were collected at regular intervals and analyzed for DDE residues.14C-DDE residues in water declined rapidly initially for the first 8 days and then gradually for the next 25 days. Algae, which are an integral part of the rice ecosystem, also showed bioaccumulation of DDE up to 0.016% within 30 days. Soil samples showed considerable 14C residues in both extractable (up to 50%) as well as bound (up to 10-11%) form. Rice plants and seeds did not show any detectable 14C-residues. Abstract

Fate of [sup 14]C-chlorpyrifos was studied in a model rice ecosystem. The level of [sup 14]C-residues in floodwater showed initially a rapid decline in first 10 days. These residues were observed till 30 days. The insecticide residues in soil did not show any appreciable build-up, thereby indicating that the residue levels of this insecticide may not be significant. Extractable residues were formed up to 10-13% of the applied [sup 14]C-activity during the period of 136 days, while the bound fraction of [sup 14]C-residues reached a maximum of 2.9% after 92 days. Algae and rice plants showed [sup 14]C-residues to the extent of only 0. 01% of the applied [sup 14]C-activity. Rice grains did not show any residues at all. These results indicate that chlorpyrifos undergoes considerable degradation in rice soils and does not leave residues, which may be of environmental concern. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
