Photoisomerization of azobenzenes from their stable E isomer to the metastable Z state is the basis of numerous applications of these molecules. However, this reaction typically requires ultraviolet light, which limits applicability. In this study, we introduce disequilibration by sensitization under confinement (DESC), a supramolecular approach to induce the E -to- Z isomerization by using light of a desired color, including red. DESC relies on a combination of a macrocyclic host and a photosensitizer, which act together to selectively bind and sensitize E -azobenzenes for isomerization. The Z isomer lacks strong affinity for and is expelled from the host, which can then convert additional E- azobenzenes to the Z state. In this way, the host-photosensitizer complex converts photon energy into chemical energy in the form of out-of-equilibrium photostationary states, including ones that cannot be accessed through direct photoexcitation.

Introduction: There are no generally accepted histopathological reference values in paraspinal skeletal muscle biopsies., Methods: We examined multifidii muscle biopsies from 20 neuromuscularly healthy subjects using routine histological stains and biochemical analyses of respiratory chain enzymes., Results: Staining showed incomplete myopathic features, such as increased variability in fiber size, type 1 hypertrophy, rounded fiber shape, endomysial fibrosis, and replacement by adipose tissue. Acid phosphatase reaction was positive in up to 35% of the selected muscle fibers. Mitochondrial changes were obvious but revealed no selective age dependence. Reduced complex I, cytochrome c oxidase (COX), and citrate synthase (CS) could be observed., Conclusions: Because the increased variability in morphological details can easily be misinterpreted as myopathic changes, analysis of paraspinal muscles should take into consideration that incomplete myopathic features and reduced oxidative enzyme activities for complex I, COX, and CS are normal variations at this location., (© 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Aim: The synthesis of rRNA is a key determinant of normal and malignant cell growth and subject to epigenetic regulation. Yet, the epigenomic features of rDNA arrays clustered in nucleolar organizer regions are largely unknown. We set out to explore for the first time how DNA methylation is distributed on individual rDNA arrays., Materials & Methods: Here we combined immunofluorescence detection of DNA modifications with fluorescence hybridization of single DNA fibers, metaphase immuno-FISH and methylation-sensitive restriction enzyme digestions followed by Southern blot., Results: We found clustering of both hypomethylated and hypermethylated repeat units and hypermethylation of noncanonical rDNA in IMR90 fibroblasts and HCT116 colorectal carcinoma cells. Surprisingly, we also found transitions between hypo- and hypermethylated rDNA repeat clusters on single DNA fibers., Conclusion: Collectively, our analyses revealed co-existence of different epialleles on individual nucleolar organizer regions and showed that epi-combing is a valuable approach to analyze epigenomic patterns of repetitive DNA.

This is a retrospective study of 100 consecutive patients who attended our ENT outpatient clinic in 6 month-period from April to September 2006. All of them presented with Asymmetrical SNHL. They were all investigated with MRI scan of the IAM and CPA. We did not employ any guidelines or protocols as to when to request MRI in patients with Asymmetrical SNHL. The mean age for the studied group was 52.97. Gender distribution in the studied group was 53% for males and 47% for females. The pickup rate was 1% for CPA lesion which was vestibular schwannoma. However, incidentally, there were 15% of cases with vascular loop at the CPA.
