This study aimed at identifying genomic regions that affect nine pork quality traits in purebred and crossbred fatteners. A total of 259 fatteners represented by six purebreds/crosses were genotyped for 45556 SNP markers by Illumina Porcine SNP60 BeadChip. The following traits were recorded: glycogen potential (GP), glycogen content (GC), lactate content (LC), pH35, pH24, pH48, drip loss after 48 hours (DL48), colour lightness (L*) and lean meat content (LMC). Multi-Locus Mixed Model methodology was applied to find associations between SNP markers and recorded traits. Several SNPs were found to be significantly associated with some pork quality traits: four SNPs (located on SSC7, SSC10 and SSC14) with GP, three SNPs (SSC10, SSC14) with GC, one SNP (SSC15) with DL48 and one SNP with pH48. Genetic variation explained by significant SNPs ranged from 7.6% to 9.1%. Moreover, some genes (e.g. CAPN10, ALDH5A1, PASK, SNITA1 and MYH7B) located in the close vicinity to significant markers are proposed to be candidate genes explaining the genetic background of the traits studied. In the last two decades, the bovine A1 variant of beta-casein has attracted attention in the dairy industry as a source of beta-casomorphin-7, an opioid-like peptide with potentially harmful effects on human health. Because the origin of this variant is unknown, the aim of the study was to investigate its occurrence in different species of the Bovidae family. Blood samples were taken from 137 animals belonging to 17 Bovidae species. All animals were genotyped for the beta-casein locus using the Illumina Bovine MDv2 Chip. The results showed that the A1 allele was present in Bos taurus cattle, including primitive cattle (Watussi and Ukrainian Grey) and a modern dairy breed (Holstein). In Dahomey cattle, two heterozygous A1A2 individuals were found. In all remaining species, no animal carrying the A1 allele of beta-casein was identified. It can be concluded that the A2 allele is ancestral to the A1 allele and was spread especially among modern dairy cattle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Necrotic inflammation of the prepuce (NIP, posthitis) is probably the most serious threat to the males of European bison (Bison bonasus) population living in the Białowieża National Park. Approximately 6% of the males have been affected every year. The aim of this study was to explore genetic regions potentially affecting this disease. The population was divided into two groups: healthy (25) and affected by posthitis (112). All individuals were genotyped with the Illumina BovineHD BeadChip. Tests performed on a single-locus mixed model (EMMAX) resulted in one SNP on the 25th chromosome (rs134172402) showing statistically important association with the posthitis incidence. The closest candidate gene located near this SNP was the periplakin (PPL) coding protein associated with skin development and some autoimmunity skin diseases such as pemphigus foliaceus or atopic dermatitis. Therefore, we conclude that PPL might be the candidate gene for posthitis, but further studies are necessary to confirm its expression and role in affected tissues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
