Uranium mineralization areas may jeopardize public health and surrounding natural life. In the current study for radioactivity and geochemical analyses, 43 soil, 5 rock and 10 beach sand samples were collected in and around Arıklı (Ayvacık, Turkey) uranium mineralization area. Radioactivity levels in the soils (up to Ra-226: 629, Th-232: 240, K-40: 3669 Bq/kg) were found higher than the that of beach sands. Besides, radioactivity of the beach sand samples is found at normal levels (avg: Ra-226: 31, Th-232: 31, K-40: 542 Bq/kg) when compared to worldwide average soil. Dose values indicate that the region have ~three times higher average gamma radioactivity than the corresponding world average although measured gamma doses ranged up to 687 nGy/h. The high measured values are related to uranium mineralization, alteration zones, faults and Arıklı tuff.

In situ indoor gamma dose rate measurements were held in 79 dwellings by NaI(Tl) scintillation probe connected portable dose rate meter. For the building materials and impurities (nodules), spectrometric gamma analysis was applied by a high-resolution HpGe detector. For Ahmetçe and Nusratlı villages in Ayvacik/Çanakkale (Turkey), the measured in situ indoor gamma dose rates and related indoor annual effective dose equivalents (AEDEin) were 3 and 3.3 times, and indoor excess lifetime cancer risks (ELCRin) were 4.25 and 4.68 times higher than those of the world averages, respectively. The used local rocks were mostly ignimbrite and dacitic–rhyolitic tuffaceous (Arıklı tuff), and wall plasters were made of local soil. The highest in situ indoor gamma dose rates of the region belonged to Nusratlı village due to the intense impurities (nodules) and hydrothermal alterations in Arıklı tuff. Spectrometric gamma results revealed that 40K has an important effect on the indoor gamma doses.

Spatial patterns of ecosystem processes constitute significant sources of uncertainty in greenhouse gas flux estimations partly because the patterns are temporally dynamic. The aim of this study was to describe temporal variability in the spatial patterns of grassland CO2 and N2O flux under varying environmental conditions and to assess effects of the grassland management (grazing and mowing) on flux patterns. We made spatially explicit measurements of variables including soil respiration, aboveground biomass, N2O flux, soil water content, and soil temperature during a 4-year study in the vegetation periods at grazed and mowed grasslands. Sampling was conducted in 80 × 60 m grids of 10 m resolution with 78 sampling points in both study plots. Soil respiration was monitored nine times, and N2O flux was monitored twice during the study period. Altitude, soil organic carbon, and total soil nitrogen were used as background factors at each sampling position, while aboveground biomass, soil water content, and soil temperature were considered as covariates in the spatial analysis. Data were analyzed using variography and kriging. Altitude was autocorrelated over distances of 40–50 m in both plots and influenced spatial patterns of soil organic carbon, total soil nitrogen, and the covariates. Altitude was inversely related to soil water content and aboveground biomass and positively related to soil temperature. Autocorrelation lengths for soil respiration were similar on both plots (about 30 m), whereas autocorrelation lengths of N2O flux differed between plots (39 m in the grazed plot vs. 18 m in the mowed plot). Grazing appeared to increase heterogeneity and linkage of the spatial patterns, whereas mowing had a homogenizing effect. Livestock is both threatened by and contributing to climate change. The contribution of livestock to climate change and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission greatly vary under different management regimes. A number of mitigation options comprise livestock management, although there are a lot of uncertainties as to which management regime to use for a given pedoclimatic and farming system. Therefore, we 1) tested if an extensive cattle livestock farm is a net sink or a net source for GHG (carbon–dioxide, CO 2 ; methane, CH 4 ; nitrous oxide N 2 O) in Central–Eastern Europe, 2) compared the annual GHG balances between the grazed and mowed treatments of the farm 3) and investigated the role of climate variability in shaping these balances. Net ecosystem exchange of CO 2 ( NEE ) was measured with eddy covariance technique in both the grazed and mowed treatments. Estimations of lateral C fluxes were based on management data. Other GHG fluxes (CH 4 , N 2 O) were determined by chamber gas flux measurements technique (in case of soil) and IPCC guidelines (in case of manure decomposition and animal fermentation). Net greenhouse gas balance ( NGHG ) for the grazed treatment was 228 ± 283 g CO 2 equivalent m −2 year −1 (net sink) and −475 ± 144 g CO 2 equiv. m −2 year −1 (net source) for the mowed treatment. Net source activity at the mowed treatment was due to its higher herbage use intensity compared to the grazed treatment. At the farm scale the system was estimated to be a net sink for NGHG in a year with wet (135 g CO 2 equiv. m −2 year −1 ), while a net source in years with dry soil moisture conditions (−267 ± 214 g CO 2 equiv. m −2 year −1 ). We conclude that under a temperate continental climate extended extensive grazing could serve as a potential mitigation of GHG in contrast to mowing. Our study highlights the fact that livestock farming could create a net sink for GHG under proper management regimes.

This study measured in situ indoor gamma dose rates in Arıklı village situated near a uranium mineralisation region, evaluated the risks of radiological health hazards and established a hypothetical relationship between these values and building materials using statistical tools. Eberline brand portable type ESP-2 model Na (I) scintillation probe connected detector was used for the measurements in 45 dwellings. Statistics revealed two groups. The first group consists of the dwellings made of bricks or mixed materials both plastered by cement, while the second group represented the dwellings made of Arıklı tuff plastered with soil (modified Arıklı tuff) or cement. For the first and second groups, respectively, the medians of the indoor gamma dose rates were 188.79 and 261.87 nGy/h; for indoor Annual Effective Dose Equivalents (AEDEin) they were 0.93 and 1.28 mSv/h; and for Excess Lifetime Cancer Risks (ELCRin) they were 3.69 and 5.12, respectively. All the values were higher than those of the world averages.

For surveillance and target acquisition systems the shorter wavelength regions, i.e. VIS/NIR and in particular SWIR (short wave infrared) have regained importance due to their unique information content and due to technological developments. There is a multitude of imaging systems in that range (400 nm to 1800 nm) extending from simple driver cameras for daylight operation (illumination levels 10 klux or more) to sophisticated night vision devices operating at illumination levels below 1 mlx. Advanced systems using signal and image processing or even AI will only work properly if some performance criteria are met. The requirements to test such systems are demanding. For these systems a suitable lab testing equipment is required to measure performance in a controlled manner. LESOYS has designed and produced a flexible and yet compact test system, the AMT 10. This system is capable of covering over 8 decades of illumination resp. irradiation levels and a vast range of spatial frequencies of test patterns for the spectral range 400 nm to 1800 nm. The primary tests include the measurement of the Minimum Resolvable Contrast MRC, Modulation Transfer Function MTF, Signal-to-Noise S/N, and other figure of merits. The contrast can be adjusted continuously in the range from 100% to 0.1% with one single target. By the use of conversion filters, the setup can easily be adapted to different colour temperatures. The operation is PC controlled and occurs in a semi-automatic manner. The test station is calibrated not only in photometric and radiometric units, but also in the new SWIR radiance measure of Swux/sr.
