Abstract Background The Great East Japan Earthquake and the subsequent Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in 2011 posed significant challenges to the educational sector, particularly affecting nursing students in the disaster area. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no reports on the effects of the natural disaster coupled with the nuclear accident on the nursing students. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the impact of the Fukushima disasters on rate of academic failure events in nursing education. Methods A retrospective cohort approach was conducted, focusing on 677 students from Soma Nursing School admitted between 2001 and 2017. Four failure events—failure to pass the national examination, student retention, suspension, and withdrawal from school—were compared between three time periods: pre-disaster, early peri-disaster, and later peri-disaster. This analysis was followed by a questionnaire survey among the students and an interview with faculty members to gain further insights. Results Of the student cohort, 17% had at least one failure event. Students in the later peri-disaster phase faced an elevated failure rate at 29%. Variables such as being male, admission during later peri-disaster period, and local pre-admission residence played a significant role in these failure events in multivariate logistic regression analysis (adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval, p value]; 2.63 [1.49–4.64,

ABSTRACTBackground Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are long-standing health problems in athletes, affecting both performance and health. ID prevalence in young athletes remains high and a matter of concern. ID and IDA can lead to fatigue, reduced endurance, and decreased oxygen transport, potentially compromising athletic performance. We hypothesized that ID would still be a major health concern in university athletes across sports clubs in Japan.Purpose The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of ID and IDA in athletes participating in Kendo, badminton, baseball, and handball at the University of Tsukuba (Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan). The study also examined the correlation between hypoferritinemia and other variables, such as previous use of iron supplements, body mass index (BMI), energy intake, and years of athletics.Methods Between January and December 2019, 126 university athletes, consisting of 79 males and 47 females, underwent physical measurements and blood tests. The blood test included complete blood count, levels of serum ferritin, serum iron, and total iron-binding capacity. The anemia was defined in accordance with the WHO criteria. Daily energy and iron intake were estimated with the food frequency questionnaire in Japanese (FFQg). Thirty-four female athletes responded to a survey about their menstruation and low-dose estrogen-progestin (LEP) usage.Results While none of the athletes had anemia, 22 (47%) female athletes exhibited serum ferritin levels of 30 ng/mL or less, defining them as hypoferritinemia. The multivariate logistic regression model revealed that a shorter duration of the athletic experience (adjusted odd ratio [95% confidence interval]: 0.62 [0.43–0.90]), lower energy intake (0.994 [0.989–0.999]), and higher dietary iron intake (4.40 [1.12–17.26]) were associated with hypoferritinemia. Seventeen (50%) female athletes reported a decline in subjective performance during menstruation, albeit two took LEP regularly.Conclusions This study reveals that ID is a prevalent health concern among young female athletes across sports clubs. It underscores the need for their education on the importance of assessing ID status. Limitation includes the nature of single-site and observational study, the absence of hepcidin measurement, and an unspecified amount of exercise. Comprehensive investigations are needed to elucidate the causes and optimal treatments for ID in young athletes.

Background: Telemedicine with video communication has become commonly applied during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. While audio-only encounters are not allowed in Japan after August 2023. The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) in the United States revised the telehealth policy to make the video visit standard. We present here a case with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and diagnosed her with the Herpes zoster at audio-only encounters followed by an in-person clinic visit. Case Presentation: A 31-year-old woman called our hospital for a complaint of right chest discomfort and a tingling sensation. The SARS-CoV-2 infection was confirmed on her with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test 4 days before the symptom onset. A telephone encounter was made for her since the video communication failed to be prepared. The attending physician made a diagnosis of herpes zoster based on her verbal explanation of symptoms and localized skin lesions. An anti-viral medication with amenamevir was given. The photos of skin lesions were sent 3 days after the audio visit, which was consistent with herpes zoster. The patient visited our outpatient clinic and was confirmed for herpes zoster serologically with positive antibodies of both varicella-zoster IgM and IgG. Conclusions: The audio-only visit could help diagnose herpes zoster if the follow-up examinations are performed adequately. Audio-only encounters preserve the flexibility of telemedicine when video communication cannot be prepared promptly.

Abstract The present study aimed to clarify the characteristics of young evacuees who had missed the Comprehensive Health Check of the Fukushima Health Management Survey (FHMS) after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. The FHMS has been conducted as a prospective cohort study to evaluate the health status of evacuees annually after the great earthquake in 2011. This study focused on the annual participation rate in the Comprehensive Health Check of evacuees aged between 20 and 37 years in 2011 who evacuated due to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. The characteristics of subjects who did not participate after the second survey year were identified with a multivariate logistic regression model. The participation rate was estimated at 26.6% (9720 among 36,502 residents) and 15.6% (5691 residents) in 2011 and 2012, respectively. The logistic regression model revealed the following characteristics at baseline as independent predictors of non-participation after the second year of the survey: age ≤ 24 years (adjusted odds ratio 2.11, 95% CI 1.84–2.42), 25–29 years of age (1.28, 1.13–1.45), men (1.52, 1.38–1.69), evacuation outside the municipality but within Fukushima prefecture (1.54, 1.40–1.70), evacuation outside the Fukushima prefecture (1.40, 1.21–1.63), anemia (1.23, 1.06–1.43), smoking habit (1.34, 1.21–1.48), and drinking habit (1.20, 1.09–1.32). A medical history of heart disease showed opposite odds ratios, which indicate the association with continuous participation (0.43, 0.26–0.72, respectively). We observed deteriorated participation in the prospective study of the Comprehensive Health Check of the FHMS among evacuees of a younger age group, men, those evacuated outside their municipalities, and those with history of anemia, smoking and drinking habits. Hence, the cohort study may have missed certain population groups with worse health behaviors. Thus, it is necessary to consider various measures to increase the participation rate in the disaster cohort study to understand the long-term health effects of disasters on younger residents in evacuation zones.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the sequential changes in the proportion of anemia among young women over eight years after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 using a prospective study of the Fukushima Health Management Survey. This study focused on the women aged between 20 and 44 who lived in the evacuation area of the nuclear power plant accident. The yearly age-adjusted proportion of anemia was accessed with data between July 2011 and March 2019. A total of 9,198 women participated in the health checkup in 2011, albeit the participation was decreased to 1,241 in 2018. The age-adjusted proportion of anemia was 16.7% in 2012 and then declined after 2013 (p with Cochran-Armitage trend test = 0.03). The multivariate regression analysis identified

Marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) is gaining interest as a tool to meet global climate goals. Because the response of the ocean–atmosphere system to mCDR takes years to centuries, modeling is required to assess the impact of mCDR on atmospheric CO _2 reduction. Here, we use a coupled ocean–atmosphere model to quantify the atmospheric CO _2 reduction in response to a CDR perturbation. We define two metrics to characterize the atmospheric CO _2 response to both instantaneous ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) and direct air capture (DAC): the cumulative additionality ( α ) measures the reduction in atmospheric CO _2 relative to the magnitude of the CDR perturbation, while the relative efficiency ( ϵ ) quantifies the cumulative additionality of mCDR relative to that of DAC. For DAC, α is 100% immediately following CDR deployment, but declines to roughly 50% by 100 years post-deployment as the ocean degasses CO _2 in response to the removal of carbon from the atmosphere. For instantaneous OAE, α is zero initially and reaches a maximum of 40%–90% several years to decades later, depending on regional CO _2 equilibration rates and ocean circulation processes. The global mean ϵ approaches 100% after 40 years, showing that instantaneous OAE is nearly as effective as DAC after several decades. However, there are significant geographic variations, with ϵ approaching 100% most rapidly in the low latitudes while ϵ stays well under 100% for decades to centuries near deep and intermediate water formation sites. These metrics provide a quantitative framework for evaluating sequestration timescales and carbon market valuation that can be applied to any mCDR strategy.

Background: Temporary anchorage devices (TADs) are broadly used in orthodontic treatment. TADs must be placed accurately to avoid collision against tooth roots. To place miniscrews with a higher accuracy, a digitally designed surgical guide was proposed in previous studies. However, to our knowledge, there have been no articles that have assessed the minimal required length to achieve good drilling accuracy. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of pre-drilling using computer-aided designed surgical guides with different lengths. Methods: A typodont model was scanned, and surgical guides of 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 mm were designed. Duplicated typodonts and the surgical guides were printed with a 3D printer. Using these models and surgical guides, pre-drillings were performed. Freehand drilling was also conducted for the control. The drilled models were scanned with micro-computed tomography to evaluate the accuracy. Results: The mean errors at the tip of the drill were 0.44 mm, 0.61 mm, 0.41 mm, and 0.24 mm for the freehand drilling, and 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 mm for the surgical guide, respectively. Conclusion: The results suggested that a longer surgical guide was recommended to achieve good insertion accuracy for a narrow interradicular space, and that 3.0 mm was enough when an error of 1.0 mm was acceptable for the insertion site.

Abstract An increasing body of evidence suggests that impaired synapse development and function are associated with schizophrenia; however, the underlying molecular pathophysiological mechanism of the disease remains largely unclear. We conducted a family-based study combined with molecular and cellular analysis using induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology. We generated iPSCs from patients with familial schizophrenia, differentiated these cells into neurons, and investigated the molecular and cellular phenotypes of the patient’s neurons. We identified multiple altered synaptic functions, including increased glutamatergic synaptic transmission, higher synaptic density, and altered splicing of dopamine D2 receptor mRNA in iPSC-derived neurons from patients. We also identified patients’ specific genetic mutations using whole-exome sequencing. Our findings support the notion that altered synaptic function may underlie the molecular and cellular pathophysiology of schizophrenia, and that multiple genetic factors cooperatively contribute to the development of schizophrenia.

Abstract Background Mastication is one of the most fundamental functions for the conservation of human life. To clarify the pathogenetic mechanism of various oral dysfunctions, the demand for devices for evaluating stomatognathic function has been increasing. The aim of the present study was to develop a system to reconstruct and visualize 3-dimensional (3D) mandibular movements relative to the maxilla, including dynamic transition of occlusal contacts between the upper and lower dentitions during mastication in mice. Methods First, mandibular movements with six degrees of freedom were measured using a motion capture system comprising two high-speed cameras and four reflective markers. Second, 3D models of maxillofacial structure were reconstructed from micro-computed tomography images. Movement trajectories of anatomical landmark points on the mandible were then reproduced by integrating the kinematic data of mandibular movements with the anatomical data of maxillofacial structures. Lastly, 3D surface images of the upper dentition with the surrounding maxillofacial structures were transferred to each of the motion capture images to reproduce mandibular movements relative to the maxilla. We also performed electromyography (EMG) of masticatory muscles associated with mandibular movements. Results The developed system could reproduce the 3D movement trajectories of arbitrary points on the mandible, such as incisor, molars and condylar points with high accuracy and could visualize dynamic transitions of occlusal contacts between upper and lower teeth associated with mandibular movements. Conclusions The proposed system has potential to elucidate the mechanisms underlying motor coordination of masticatory muscles and to clarify their roles during mastication by taking advantage of the capability to record EMG data synchronously with mandibular movements. Such insights will enhance our understanding of the pathogenesis and diagnosis of oral motor disorders by allowing comparisons between normal mice and genetically modified mice with oral behavioral dysfunctions.

Abstract In residential care, the daily use of social networking services with patients (and patients’ families) helps prepare for a potential disaster. This enables health workers to continue providing essential care even during disasters, while saving human and medical resources for those who need them the most.

Banana (Musa acuminata) is one of the most important crop plants consumed in many countries. However, the commercial value decreases during storage and transportation. To maintain fruit quality, postharvest technologies have been developed. Storage at low temperature is a common method to prolong the shelf life of food products, especially during transportation and distribution. Another emerging approach is the use of chitosan biopolymer as an edible coating, which can extend the shelf life of fruit by preventing moisture and aroma loss, and inhibiting oxygen penetration into the plant tissue. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry metabolite profiling of the banana ripening process was performed to clarify the global metabolism changes in banana after chitosan coating or storage at low temperature. Both postharvest treatments were effective in delaying banana ripening. Interestingly, principal component analysis and orthogonal projection to latent structure regression analysis revealed significant differences of both treatments in the metabolite changes, indicating that the mechanism of prolonging the banana shelf life may be different. Chitosan (1.25% w/v) treatment stored for 11 days resulted in a distinct accumulation of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid metabolite, an important precursor of ethylene that is responsible for the climacteric fruit ripening process. Low temperature (LT, 14 ± 1°C) treatment stored for 9 days resulted in higher levels of putrescine, a polyamine that responds to plant stress, at the end of ripening days. The findings clarify how chitosan delays fruit ripening and provides a deeper understanding of how storage at low temperature affects banana metabolism. The results may aid in more effective development of banana postharvest strategies.

Background: Cathepsin K, which is involved in bone resorption, is a good target for treating osteoporosis, but no clinically approved medicine has been developed. Recently, allosteric inhibitors with high specificity and few side effects have been attracting attention for use in new medicines. Methods: Cathepsin K inhibitors were isolated from the methanol extract of Chamaecrista nomame (Leguminosae) using cathepsin K inhibition activity-assisted multi-step chromatography. Standard kinetic analysis was employed to examine the mechanism of cathepsin K inhibition when an isolated inhibitor and its derivative were used. The allosteric binding of these cathepsin K inhibitors was supported by a docking study using AutoDock vina. Combinations of allosteric cathepsin K inhibitors expected to bind to different allosteric sites were examined by means of cathepsin K inhibition assay. Results: Two types of cathepsin K inhibitors were identified in the methanol extract of Chamaecrista nomame. One type consisted of cassiaoccidentalin B and torachrysone 8-β-gentiobioside, and inhibited both cathepsin K and B with similar inhibitory potential, while the other type of inhibitor consisted of pheophytin a, and inhibited cathepsin K but not cathepsin B, suggesting that pheophytin a binds to an allosteric site of cathepsin K. Kinetic analysis of inhibitory activity suggested that pheophytin a and its derivative, pheophorbide b, bind allosterically to cathepsin K. This possibility was supported by a docking study on cathepsin K. The cathepsin K inhibitory activity of pheophytin a and pheophorbide b was enhanced by combining them with the allosteric inhibitors NSC 13345 and NSC94914, which bind to other allosteric sites on cathepsin K. Conclusions: Different allosteric inhibitors that bind to different sites in combination, as shown in this study, may be useful for designing new allosteric inhibitory drugs with high specificity and few side effects.

Background Anemia is a common health issue among adolescents. Anemic conditions could affect physical performance; however, the actual profiles of anemia in adolescent students in sports clubs have not been well documented. Methods We conducted a retrospective chart review of individuals aged 13–22 years who belonged to sports clubs in schools and visited an outpatient clinic between August 1, 2016, and August 31, 2020. The medical and laboratory records, including serum levels of ferritin, folate, vitamin B12, and creatinine kinase at their first visit were assessed. Results A total of 485 individuals (231 male (48%) and 254 female (52%) patients) were eligible for the study. The most common club activity was track and field (n = 171 (35%)). The overall prevalence of the World Health Organization-defined anemia was 16.5% (95% CI [13.1–20.4]; 9.0% [5.4–13.8] and 23.1% [17.8–29.2] in males and females, respectively) after excluding pre-treated individuals. Hypoferritinemia and elevation of serum creatinine kinase levels were identified as independent contributors to anemia in both sexes (odds ratios: 13.2 (95% CI [4.2–41.1]), p < 0.001 and 14.7 (95% CI [1.8–118.4]), p = 0.012, respectively for males; odds ratios: 6.6 (95% CI [1.3–13.9]), p < 0.001 and 2.7 (95% CI [1.4–5.5]), p = 0.004, respectively for females). Discussion Anemia is prevalent in both male and female adolescent students in sports clubs. Iron deficiency and excessive training indicated by elevated creatinine kinase levels may contribute to the risk of anemia. Physicians should assess the amount of exercise, and not merely iron storage, in clinical practice.

AimPortopulmonary hypertension (PoPH) is a rare and serious complication of liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension that can interfere with liver transplantation (LT). We evaluated the prevalence of PoPH and the clinical features of right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP), which is equivalent to pulmonary artery systolic pressure, in LT candidates.MethodsThis was a single-center retrospective study. A total of 157 Japanese patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis or portal hypertension (76 men, median age = 52 years [range: 18-68 years]) were enrolled. The relationships between RVSP and clinical parameters, and the prevalence of PoPH in LT candidates, were evaluated.ResultsThe cardiological parameters were as follows: brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), 39.1 (4.0-780.5) pg/mL; RVSP, 31.2 (16.0-122.4) mmHg; ejection fraction, 58% (28-72%); and mean peak tricuspid regurgitation velocity, 2.3 (1.5-5.3) m/s. The RVSP was significantly higher in females (p = 0.02) and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) patients (p = 0.01), and was weakly correlated with the BNP level (r = 0.40, p = 0.01). For RVSPs of < 36 and ≥ 36 mmHg, the 5-year survival rates were 36.1% versus 34.1%, and 85.4% versus 85.3%, in non-LT and LT cases, respectively (p = 0.47 and 0.69, respectively). Among six patients with an RVSP ≥ 50 mmHg, three (1.9%) were diagnosed with PoPH and treated with vasodilators.ConclusionsPoPH was observed in 3 cases (1.9%) in 157 LT candidates. In patients with suspected mild pulmonary hypertension (RVSP, 36 - 50 mmHg), LT was successfully performed.

Anisakiasis is a parasitic disease caused by Anisakis simplex and has become an emerging zoonosis as preferences for eating raw or undercooked seafood have become more common. Few case reports of asymptomatic anisakiasis have been published to date. A 79-year-old asymptomatic man underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) for gastric cancer screening. The gastroenterologist diagnosed superficial gastritis without any malignant lesions but found an Anisakis larva while reviewing EGD images. The physician performed a second EGD and removed the larva. The patient reported that he ate the flatfish sashimi for dinner on the day before the first EGD. This case indicates the existence of asymptomatic gastric anisakiasis, indicating that anisakiasis incidence may have previously been underestimated.

De novo mutations significantly contribute to autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Here, the authors demonstrate that ASD-associated de novo mutations in the POGZ gene, one of a high-confidence ASD gene, lead to ASD-related impaired neuronal development and disrupted mature cortical network function.

Vaccination is effective in preventing COVID-19-related hospitalization among all age groups, but there is limited evidence on the effectiveness of the booster of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine among adolescents. We analyzed the data on the status of SARS-CoV-2 infection and their vaccination profiles in adolescents aged 13–18 years in Soma city (Fukushima, Japan) (n = 1835) from 14 May to 15 June 2022. The crude incidence rate and 95% confidence interval were calculated with the negative-binomial regression model after classifying the immunization status. The crude effectiveness of a booster administration to prevent infections was estimated as 86.4% (95% confidence interval: 57.2–95.7) when compared with the primary vaccination alone. The results of this study support that the community-based mass vaccination campaign of a booster dose among adolescents has additional protection from COVID-19 during the period of the B.1.1.529 (omicron) variant wave.

Background Iron deficiency is widely recognized as being the cause of anemia in athletes, although iron status in athletes of Kendo, a traditional Japanese martial art based on swordsmanship and practiced as an educational sport, has not been widely investigated. Methods We performed a health assessment on anemia and serum ferritin levels, along with nutrient intake evaluation, for Kendo practitioners in a university in Japan. Results A total of 56 Kendo practitioners (39 male and 17 female) aged between 18 and 23 years participated in the study. No individuals exhibited WHO-defined anemia (less than 13 or 12 g/dL of hemoglobin levels in male or female), while hypoferritinemia (less than 30 ng/mL) was found in seven (41%) females but not in males. Significantly higher body mass index was found in the female athletes with hypoferritinemia compared to females with normo-ferritinemia in sub-analysis (median [interquartile range]; 25.6 [24.2, 26.9] versus 22.6 [21.7, 24.1], respectively. p

Introduction: The primary care clinic plays a major role in triage for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), where seroprevalence in the setting of primary care clinic remains less clear. As a point-of-care immunodiagnostic test for the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the serosurvey represents an alternative to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test to measure the magnitude of COVID-19 outbreak in the communities lacking sufficient diagnostic capability for PCR testing. Methods: We assessed seropositivity for the SARS-CoV-2 IgG between April 21 and May 20, 2020, at 2 primary care clinics in Tokyo, Japan. Results: The overall positive percentage of SARS-CoV-2 IgG was 3.83% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.76-5.16) for the entire cohort (n = 1071). The 23 special wards of central Tokyo exhibited a significantly higher prevalence compared with the other areas of Tokyo after classification by residence ( P = .02, 4.68% [3.08-6.79] vs 1.83 [0.68-3.95] in central and suburban Tokyo, respectively). In central Tokyo, the southern area showed the highest seroprevalence compared with the other areas (7.92% [3.48-15.01]), corresponding to the cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 patients by PCR test reported by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Conclusion: The seroprevalence surveyed in this study was too low for herd immunity, suggesting the need for robust disease control and prevention. A regional-level approach, rather than state- or prefectural-level, could be of importance in ascertaining detailed profiles of the COVID-19 outbreak.

COVID-19 vaccines are the most critical measure for controlling the COVID-19 pandemic; however, we have little information on their complications. We experienced a case of a patient who developed hyperthyroidism complicated with atrial fibrillation and heart failure on the sixth day after the first dose of COVID-19 vaccination. This case report shows the importance of considering hyperthyroidism as a possible complication after COVID-19 vaccination.

Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) play significant roles in most medical fields. However, little is known about the extent of financial Conflicts of Interest (FCOIs) related to pharmaceutical companies (Pharma) selling dermatology prescription products and dermatology CPG authors in Japan. The aims of this study were to elucidate the characteristics and distribution of payments from Pharma to dermatology CPG authors in Japan, and to evaluate the extent of transparency and accuracy in their FCOI disclosures. We analyzed the records of 296 authors from 32 dermatology CPGs published by the Japanese Dermatological Association from the beginning of 2015 to the end of 2018. Using the payment data reported by 79 Pharma between 2016-2017 in Japan, we investigated the characteristics of the CPG authors and the payments from the Pharma to them. Furthermore, we evaluated the transparency and accuracy of the FCOI disclosures of the individual CPG authors. Of the 296 CPGs authors, 269 authors (90.6%) received at least one payment from the Pharma. The total monetary value of payments for the 2-year period was $7,128,762. The median and mean monetary value of payments from the Pharma reporting were $10,281 (interquartile range $2,796 -$34,962) and $26,600 (standard deviation $40,950) for the two years combined. Of the 26 CPG authors who disclosed FCOIs due to the monies received from Pharma, only the atopic dermatitis CPG authors and the acne vulgaris CPG authors published their potential FCOIs. In Japan, most dermatology CPG authors received financial payments from Pharma. The transparency of the CPGs, as reported by the CPG authors, was inadequate, and a more rigorous framework of reporting and monitoring FCOI disclosure is required to improve the accuracy and transparency with relation to possible Conflicts of Interest.

Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the internal cesium (Cs) level among pregnant women in Minamisoma City (the area straddling the evacuation zones) over a 5-year period after Japan’s 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident and assess the status and transition of their food-acquiring preferences during this period.Design A retrospective observational study of a screening along with a questionnaire survey.Setting This study was conducted in an obstetrics and gynaecology service in Minamisoma City in Fukushima, Japan.Participants Participants included pregnant women who applied for the voluntary internal radiation exposure screening programme.Primary and secondary outcome measures Internal radiation exposure was evaluated using the whole-body counter (WBC) in the screening programme. Data from a food acquisition preference questionnaire administered to the participants were analysed and compared across the 5-year period after adjusting for covariates.Results Overall, 804 screening programmes were conducted with 579 participants during the study period. All participants had internal contamination levels below the detection limit of the WBC unit (220 and 250 Bq/body for Cs-134 and Cs-137, respectively). Based on the most conservative assumption, their maximum annual effective doses by Cs-134 and Cs-137 together were estimated at 16 µSv/year. Contrary to limited internal contamination risks and counter-dose initiatives by the government, a considerable number of pregnant women were still concerned about consuming potentially contaminated local food products when purchasing them at supermarkets between 2012 (78.4%) and 2015 (75.0%).Conclusions Health effects from post-accident internal radiation exposure were likely to be insignificant in pregnant women. National/local action is urgently needed to promote scientific understanding in pregnant women regarding limited internal exposure risks from local food products in the market. However, few mothers chose to participate in the internal radiation exposure screening programme, and thus, caution is required in interpreting the results of analyses.

Although psychiatric patients are likely to be adversely impacted by disasters, information regarding the processes involved in adverse impacts is limited. In March 2011, Japan experienced an earthquake, tsunami, and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. In its aftermath, Takano Hospital, 22 km south of the power plant, underwent forced patient evacuation. A 54-year-old Japanese male with schizophrenia, who had been hospitalized in the psychiatric ward for over 20 years, was transferred and experienced a series of hospital relocations. Although his physical status was intact when he left Takano Hospital, his condition gradually worsened, presumably due to incomplete exchange of patient information between institutions and changes in the treatment environment. Having developed ileus a few days prior, he was bedridden when he returned to Takano Hospital in May 2011. Over the course of treatment, he developed aspiration pneumonia and died in August 2011. A review of medical records revealed that all his purgative medicines had been stopped after his evacuation, possibly contributing to the development of ileus. This case highlights the necessity of establishing systems enabling patient information sharing between institutions in disaster settings and the importance of recognizing that long-term evacuation may have fatal impacts for psychiatric patients.

Banana is a climacteric fruit in which ethylene plays an important role in the regulation of the ripening process. Though it is the most produced fruit in Indonesia, the current post-harvest technologies for exporting this fruit are not economically friendly. Chitosan is one of economical biopolymer for edible coating which can extend fruit shelf-life. However, little study focused on the effect of chitosan coating has been done on gene expression level. In this study, the expression levels of several 1-aminocyclopropan-1-carboxylic acid oxidase (ACO) genes, which is an enzyme to convert 1-aminocyclopropan-1-carboxylic acid to ethylene in banana were analyzed on day 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 after ethylene treatment. As a result, one gene (ID: Ma01_t11540.1) had a similar expression pattern in both control and chitosan-coated bananas while the other genes (ID: Ma03_t02700.1, Ma05_t09360.1, Ma06_t02600.1, Ma10_t01130.1) showed different expression patterns. Among these genes, two genes (ID: Ma05_t09360.1, Ma10_t01130.1) were expressed higher than the other genes and the peak was observed on day 3. It was indicated that chitosan coating might activate the ethylene biosynthesis pathway in banana while it delayed fruit ripening.

We previously reported that the citrus flavonoid 3,5,6,7,8,3′,4′-heptamethoxyflavone (HMF) increased the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus of a transient global ischemia mouse model. Since the BDNF hypothesis of depression postulates that a reduction in BDNF is directly involved in the pathophysiology of depression, we evaluated the anti-depressive effects of HMF in mice with subcutaneously administered corticosterone at a dose of 20 mg/kg/day for 25 days. We demonstrated that the HMF treatment ameliorated (1) corticosterone-induced body weight loss, (2) corticosterone-induced depression-like behavior, and (3) corticosterone-induced reductions in BDNF production in the hippocampus. We also showed that the HMF treatment restored (4) corticosterone-induced reductions in neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus subgranular zone and (5) corticosterone-induced reductions in the expression levels of phosphorylated calcium-calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II and extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2. These results suggest that HMF exerts its effects as an anti-depressant drug by inducing the expression of BDNF.
