A "ring expansion-annulation strategy" for the synthesis of substituted azulenes is described based on the reaction of β'-bromo-α-diazo ketones with rhodium carboxylates. The key transformation involves an intramolecular Büchner reaction followed by β-elimination of bromide, tautomerization, and in situ trapping of the resulting 1-hydroxyazulene as a carboxylate or triflate ester. Further synthetic elaboration of the azulenyl halide and sulfonate annulation products can be achieved by employing Heck, Negishi, Stille, and Suzuki coupling reactions. Reaction of the azulenyl triflate 84 with pinacolborane provides access to the azulenylboronate 91, which participates in Suzuki coupling reactions with alkenyl and aryl iodides. The application of these coupling reactions to the synthesis of biazulenes, terazulene 101, and related oligoazulenes is described, as well as the preparation of the azulenyl amino acid derivative 110. Ureas of 5-aminopyrazole and 2-aminothiazole emerged as lead compounds from a high-throughput screen assaying the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. Structure–activity relationships were developed for each compound series. Several compounds were also tested for activity against drug resistant strains of S. aureus in vivo. This article is based on a survey of budget directors' views concerning control. Responsible for control on a daily basis, the budget director knows its many components first hand. Budget directors in all municipalities with populations from 100,000 to 1,000,000 received a mail questionnaire in June 1981¹. Of the 158 directors surveyed, 127 or 80 percent responded ². The discussion which follows is organized into the five key areas covered in the survey: functions of control, time commitment and degree of difficulty in performing the control function, relationship between control and other aspects of management, current control techniques, and recent developments affecting control ³. The article cites a pilot clinical psychiatric survey on the emotional and cognitive disturbance of 137 obstetrical patients during their early puerperium. The survey showed subjective evidence of anxiety and/or depression and cognitive dysfunction in 87 of the sample. Inability to sustain attention, distractibility, poor recent memory, and labile mood are the clinical phenomena described in several patients which resemble those seen in patients with acute brain syndrome. The said phenomena also support to those reporting significant cognitive disturbance in patients with post-partum mental illness.

The article presents a research which investigates on the mood and behavioral changes with progestational agents in psychiatric patients. Fifty patients have been interviewed after taking drugs with progestational agents such as Ovulen, Enovid, Ortho Novum and Norlutin. After six months, the researchers found that the drugs have undesirable effects. The patients complained of increased susceptibility to the usual kind of stresses they encountered. Two analytic patients became depressed for no detectable reason. The effects also include visual hallucinosis followed by migraine and symptoms of menopausal syndrome.

The article focuses on the extent to which predictions can be made about certified public accountants (CPA) examination results. Studies of the use of the Institute sponsored Orientation and Achievement Tests as a means of making such predictions have produced encouraging results. On the basis of these studies, which are of limited scope, it appears that reasonably accurate predictions can be made in many instances. There are many benefits which will accrue to the profession and to individuals if fairly accurate predictions can be made that a particular individual should be able to pass the CPA examination; that another individual is unlikely to pass, and that still another one has a slight chance to pass. Such predictions would aid appreciably in guidance work, and would be of value to employers. Predictive devices might be used by state examining boards in various ways. Boards might be aided in their efforts to encourage potentially able men to continue preparation and to discourage those who are obviously not ready to take the examination as well as those who may never qualify. Predictive devices might aid considerably in reducing failures.
