This article discusses the debate between coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) as treatment options for left main coronary artery (LMCA) disease. Previous studies have shown that CABG is the standard therapy for LMCA disease, but there is limited evidence comparing PCI and CABG specifically for patients with LMCA disease and diabetes. A recent meta-analysis of four randomized clinical trials found that overall 5-year survival was similar between PCI and CABG for patients with LMCA disease, regardless of diabetic status. However, CABG was associated with improved 5-year survival in diabetic patients with high overall atherosclerotic disease burden. The study suggests that the choice between PCI and CABG should be based on individual patient characteristics and preferences. [Extracted from the article]
