Purpose: The study explored whether visual information improves speech identification in typically developing children with normal hearing when the auditory signal is spectrally degraded. Method: Children (n = 69) and adults (n = 15) were presented with noise-vocoded sentences from the Children's Co-ordinate Response Measure (Rosen, 2011) in auditory-only or audiovisual conditions. The number of bands was adaptively varied to modulate the degradation of the auditory signal, with the number of bands required for approximately 79% correct identification calculated as the threshold. Results: The youngest children (4- to 5-year-olds) did not benefit from accompanying visual information, in comparison to 6- to 11-year-old children and adults. Audiovisual gain also increased with age in the child sample. Conclusions: The current data suggest that children younger than 6 years of age do not fully utilize visual speech cues to enhance speech perception when the auditory signal is degraded. This evidence not only has implications for understanding the development of speech perception skills in children with normal hearing but may also inform the development of new treatment and intervention strategies that aim to remediate speech perception difficulties in pediatric cochlear implant users.

The presence of music can both help and hinder performance on a concurrent cognitive task. Music that is low in complexity has been associated with improved performance on language learning tasks, although previous studies have typically used artificial stimuli or tested only short-term recognition. The present study examined the effect of background music as part of an ecologically valid two-week second language learning trial. Participants took a beginners’ CD-based course in either Mandarin Chinese or Arabic, and matched groups (age, gender, verbal intelligence, musical training and working memory ability) were randomly assigned to a CD that contained accompanying music or not. Individuals who chose to learn Chinese performed better on all outcome tests compared to those who learned Arabic. Within the Chinese learners, those who received music CDs performed significantly better on tests of recall and translation compared to those who received no music CDs. No music effects were observed in the Arabic learners or on pronunciation ability in Chinese. This study demonstrates that the presence of certain music can facilitate the first stages of language learning in the real world. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract Background Glutathione S-transferases are a group of enzymes that participate in detoxification and defense mechanisms against toxic carcinogens and other compounds. These enzymes play an important role in human carcinogenesis. In the present study, we sought to determine whether GSTT2 promoter single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are associated with colorectal cancer risk. Methods A total of 436 colorectal cancer patients and 568 healthy controls were genotyped for three GSTT2 promoter SNPs (-537G>A, -277T>C and -158G>A), using real-time TaqMan assay and direct sequencing. An electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) was performed to determine the effects of polymorphisms on protein binding to the GSTT2 promoter. Results The -537A allele (-537G/A or A/A) was significantly associated with colorectal cancer risk (OR = 1.373, p = 0.025), while the -158A allele (-158G/A or A/A) was involved in protection against colorectal cancer (OR = 0.539, p = 0.032). Haplotype 2 (-537A, -277T, -158G) was significantly associated with colorectal cancer risk (OR = 1.386, p = 0.021), while haplotype 4 (-537G, -277C, -158A) protected against colorectal cancer (OR = 0.539, p = 0.032). EMSA data revealed lower promoter binding activity in the -537A allele than its -537G counterpart. Conclusion Our results collectively suggest that SNPs and haplotypes of the GSTT2 promoter region are associated with colorectal cancer risk in the Korean population.

Objective: This study aimed to describe the incidence and status of acute management of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) in Korea., Methods: We utilized nationwide administrative data from the National Emergency Department Information System (2016-2018), focusing on patients with TBIs who visited emergency medical centers within 7 days of injury and were treated in neurosurgery., Results: The study included 117,830 patients, indicating an annual crude incidence of 79.4 TBIs per 100,000 persons. The highest incidence was in the age groups 0-4 and 75-79 years, with men experiencing TBIs more often than women (79.3 vs. 60.4). Traffic accidents were the most common cause (34.2%). Ambulance transport accounted for 65.4% of cases, with a median hospital arrival time of 62 minutes. Only 7.6% of patients were admitted to trauma care units, showing significant regional variations. Craniotomy or craniectomy was performed in 4.8% of cases. Normal discharge occurred in 69.3% of patients, and the overall in-hospital mortality rate was 5.3%, higher in men (3.9% vs. 1.5%)., Conclusion: In Korea, the incidence of TBIs vary by age, sex, and regions. Current status of management of TBIs also differs by regions, especially between metropolitan city and province. Objective: In this study, changes in treatment methods and patient prognosis were analyzed using a Korean nationwide medical insurance information database., Methods: Patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage who received surgical treatment for cerebral aneurysm from 2005 to 2020 were included. The specific surgery type was classified using the surgical code and according to whether stents were used. Yearly trends in mortality rates and poor prognosis, using tracheostomy as proxy, were analyzed by a simple regression analysis. A multistep logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the risk factors of mortality and poor prognosis., Results: Overall, 83,587 patients were included. Females were predominant (64.5%). Microsurgical clip usage rate decreased by approximately two-thirds from 78.8% in 2005 to 24.4% in 2020. Contrarily, endovascular treatment proportion gradually increased, and stent-assisted coil embolization rate surpassed microsurgical clip usage rate in 2020 (24.6% vs. 24.4%). In the multivariate analysis, endovascular treatment correlated positively with 3-month mortality (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.13, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07-1.19, P<0.0001), although correlated negatively with poor prognosis (tracheostomy) (HR: 0.93, 95% CI: 0.89-0.98, P=0.0050)., Conclusions: According to the treatment trend analysis, during the 16 years studied, for patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage due to ruptured cerebral aneurysm, the endovascular treatment rate increased rapidly and stent-assisted coil embolization rate surpassed that of microsurgical clip ligation. Diversification of treatment methods has led to a decrease in mortality and improved prognosis.

Objective: Shunt-dependent hydrocephalus is a major complication of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Despite this, the factors influencing shunt dependency and shunt failure remain unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to estimate shunt dependency and failure rates and determine the contributing factors in patients with aneurysmal SAH using the Korean National Health Insurance database over a 13-year period., Methods: Patients with aneurysmal SAH aged > 18 years who underwent surgical procedures were included. Using the shunt surgery prescription data, the shunt-dependent hydrocephalus rate was evaluated according to sex, age, aneurysm location, and year of admission. Among patients who underwent shunt surgery, the shunt failure rate was estimated using surgical prescription data., Results: A total of 57,030 patients with SAH who underwent aneurysm surgery were included. The overall raw rate of shunt-dependent hydrocephalus was 15.0% (8530/57,030). Age (HR 1.04, 95% CI 1.04-1.04; p < 0.001) and endovascular coiling (vs surgical clipping, HR 0.71, 95% CI 0.67-0.74; p < 0.001) were related to shunt-dependent hydrocephalus in the multivariate logistic regression analysis. Posterior circulation and anterior communicating aneurysms showed a high risk of shunt dependency. Among 8530 patients who underwent shunt surgery, the shunt failure rate was 11.3% (961/8530). Female sex (HR 1.18, 95% CI 1.01-1.39; p = 0.0324), age (HR 0.99, 95% CI 0.98-0.99; p < 0.001), early shunt placement (HR 1.25, 95% CI 1.08-1.47; p = 0.004) and lumboperitoneal shunt placement (HR 2.19, 95% CI 1.65-2.91; p < 0.001) were the risk factors for shunt failure in the multivariate logistic regression analysis., Conclusions: The rate of shunt-dependent hydrocephalus after aneurysmal SAH was 15.0% in this study using a medical claims database in Korea. The shunt surgery rate was highest in patients in their 60s and 70s. Shunt failure occurred in 11.3% of the patients, and a lumboperitoneal shunt was most related to the need for revision surgery.

Objective: The treatment paradigm for acute ischemic stroke has undergone several major changes in the past decade, contributing to improved patient prognosis in clinical practice. However, the extent to which these changes have affected patient prognosis in the real-world is yet to be clarified. This study aimed to evaluate the real-world impact of modern reperfusion therapy for acute ischemic stroke using data from the National Health Insurance Service in Korea., Methods: This study included patients aged 18-80 years who were admitted via the emergency room with an I63 code between 2011 and 2020. The rates of intravenous thrombolysis use and endovascular treatment according to the year of admission were investigated. Furthermore, the rates of decompressive craniectomy and 3-month mortality were also analyzed. The 10-year observational period was divided into three periods based on the 2015 guideline change as follows : prior, 2011-2014; transitional, 2015-2016; and modern, 2017-2020., Results: A total of 307117 patients (mean age, 65.7±10.9 years) were included, and most patients were male (59.7%). The rate of endovascular treatment gradually increased during the study period from 0.71% in the prior period to 1.32% in the transitional period and finally to 1.85% in the modern period. Meanwhile, the 3-month mortality rate gradually decreased from 4.78% in the prior period to 4.03% in the transitional period and to 3.71% in the modern period., Conclusion: In Korea, the mortality rate decreased as the rate of modern reperfusion therapy increased in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Overall, technical and scientific advances in reperfusion therapy have improved the outcome of patients with acute ischemic stroke in Korea.

Traditionally, selective breeding has been used to improve tree growth. However, traditional selection methods are time-consuming and limit annual genetic gain. Genomic selection (GS) offers an alternative to progeny testing by estimating the genotype-based breeding values of individuals based on genomic information using molecular markers. In the present study, we introduced GS to an open-pollinated breeding population of Korean red pine ( Pinus densiflora ), which is in high demand in South Korea, to shorten the breeding cycle. We compared the prediction accuracies of GS for growth characteristics (diameter at breast height [DBH], height, straightness, and volume) in Korean red pines under various conditions (marker set, model, and training set) and evaluated the selection efficiency of GS compared to traditional selection methods. Training the GS model to include individuals from various environments using genomic best linear unbiased prediction (GBLUP) and markers with a minor allele frequency larger than 0.05 was effective. The optimized model had an accuracy of 0.164-0.498 and a predictive ability of 0.018-0.441. The predictive ability of GBLUP against that of additive best linear unbiased prediction (ABLUP) was 0.86-5.10, and against the square root of heritability was 0.19-0.76, indicating that GS for Korean red pine was as efficient as in previous studies on forest trees. Moreover, the response to GS was higher than that to traditional selection regarding the annual genetic gain. Therefore, we conclude that the trained GS model is more effective than the traditional breeding methods for Korean red pines. A giant thrombosed extracranial internal carotid artery aneurysm (ECCA) is extremely rare and its treatment is challenging. Despite the advance of endovascular technique, open surgery is still considered a first-line treatment in giant thrombosed ECCA. We describe a case of giant thrombosed ECCA which was successfully treated by aneurysmectomy and graft interposition with the technical details.

Patients with colorectal cancer may experience symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, and anorexia, during surgery and chemotherapy, which can increase the risk of malnutrition. In addition, dietary habits play a key role in the onset of colorectal cancer; therefore, it is necessary to improve dietary habits to prevent recurrence during treatment after diagnosis. In this study, a clinical nutritionist conducted 4 interviews for patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer and scheduled for colectomy: before surgery, after surgery, 1st chemotherapy, and 2nd chemotherapy, and provided nutrition care for each treatment course to determine its effects on nutrition status and disease prognosis. Significant weight loss but no decrease in muscle mass was observed during treatment. Body fat mass, although not statistically significant, showed a decreasing tendency. The percentage of people who responded 'yes' to the below items increased after compared to before receiving nutrition education: 'I eat meat or eggs more than 5 times a week,' 'I eat seafood at least three times a week,' 'I eat vegetables at every meal,' 'I eat fruits every day,' and 'I eat milk or dairy products every day.' These results indicate that the patients changed their dietary habit from a monotonous eating pattern to a pattern of consuming various food groups after receiving nutrition education. Aerobic glycolysis and its by-product lactate accumulation are usually associated with adverse culture phenotypes such as poor cell viability and productivity. Due to the lack of knowledge on underlying mechanisms and accompanying biological processes, the regulation of aerobic glycolysis has been an ongoing challenge in culture process development for therapeutic protein productivity. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD + ), a coenzyme and co-substrate in energy metabolism, promotes the conversion of inefficient glycolysis into an efficient oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) pathway. However, the effect of NAD + on Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells for biopharmaceutical production has not been reported yet. In this work, we aimed to elucidate the influence of NAD + on cell culture performance by examining metabolic shifts and mAb productivity. The supplementation of NAD + increased the intracellular concentration of NAD + and promoted SIRT3 expression. Antibody titer and the specific productivity in the growth phase were improved by up to 1.82- and 1.88-fold, respectively, with marginal restrictions on cell growth. NAD + significantly reduced the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the lactate yield from glucose, determined by lactate accumulation versus glucose consumption (Y LAC/GLC ). In contrast, OXPHOS capacity and amino acid consumption rate increased substantially. Objective: Training surgeons in pedicle screw fixation (PSF) techniques during actual surgery is limited because of patient safety, complications, and surgical efficiency issues. Recent technical developments are leading the world to an era of personalized three-dimensional (3D) printing. This study aimed to evaluate the educational effect of using a 3D-printed spine model to train beginners in PSF techniques to improve screw accuracy and procedure time., Methods: Computed tomography (CT) scan data were used in a 3D printer to produce a life-size lumbar spine replica of L1-3 vertebrae. Four residents performed PSF thrice. Each resident performed 18 screw fixations on both sides (6 screws per trial). The time to complete the procedure and pedicle violation was recorded., Results: The average time for the 3 procedures was 42.1±2.9 minutes, 38.8±3.3 minutes, and 32.1±2.5 minutes, respectively. Furthermore, the average pedicle screw score for the 3 procedures was 13.0±0.8, 14.5±0.6, and 16.0±0.8, respectively. As the trial was repeated, the procedure time decreased and the accuracy of screw fixation tended to be more accurate., Conclusions: It was possible to decrease the procedure time and increase accuracy through repeated training using the 3D-printed spine model. By implementing a 3Dprinted spine model based on the patient's actual CT data, surgeons can perform simulation surgery before the actual surgery. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the serpentine pattern nerve roots (SNR) and prognosis after lumbar fusion for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) by comparing clinical outcomes in patients with or without a serpentine pattern. LSS patients with neurological symptoms often present with SNRs. Several studies have shown that LLS symptoms are worse in patients with SNRs. However, the relationship between SNR and outcome after spinal fusion surgery has not yet been established. A total of 332 patients who underwent spinal fusion surgery between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2019, were enrolled. Patients were divided into those with a serpentine pattern (S group) and those without a serpentine pattern (N group). The prognosis of the 2 groups was compared using visual analog scale (VAS), Oswestry disability index, claudication distance, medication dose for leg dysesthesia, and glucose tolerance. A total of 113 patients had a serpentine pattern, while the remaining 219 did not. Symptom duration and presence of diabetes mellitus were significantly different between the 2 groups (N = 25.4, S = 32.6, P < .05). Changes in the VAS score for lower extremity pain between the 2 groups at 1 year after surgery showed that patients without a serpentine pattern had significantly better outcomes than those with a serpentine pattern (N: 2.7 ± 1.1 vs S: 4.1 ± 1.3; P < .001), despite the score change at 1 month showing no difference (N: 3.5 ± 0.9 vs S: 3.8 ± 1.0; P = .09). SNRs on MRI are more prevalent in diabetic patients and are a negative prognostic factor in lumbar fusion surgery for LSS. Objective: We retrospectively analyzed patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) undergoing vertebral augmentation to compare the Cobb angle changes in the supine and standing positions and the clinical outcomes., Methods: We retrospectively extracted the data of OVCF patients who underwent vertebral augmentation. Back pain was assessed using a visual analogue scale (VAS). Supine and standing radiographs were assessed before treatment to determine the Cobb angle and compression ratio. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to determine the optimal cutoff to predict favorable outcomes after vertebral augmentation., Results: A total of 249 patients were included. We observed a statistically significant increase in the VAS score change with increasing Cobb angle and compression ratio (p < 0.001), and multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that a difference in the Cobb angle (odds ratio [OR], 1.27) and compression ratio (OR, 1.12) were the independent risk factors for predicting short-term favorable outcomes after vertebral augmentation. In addition, we found that the difference in the Cobb angle (OR, 1.05) was the only factor for predicting midterm favorable outcomes after vertebral augmentation. The optimal cutoff value of the difference in the Cobb angle for predicting midterm favorable outcomes was 35.526°., Conclusion: We found that the midterm clinical outcome after vertebral augmentation was better when there was a difference of approximately 35% or more in the Cobb angle between the standing and supine positions. Surgeons should pay attention to the difference in the Cobb angle depending on the posture when deciding to perform vertebral augmentation in patients with OVCFs.

The aim of this prospective study was to construct a new pharmacokinetic model of vancomycin for target-concentration controlled infusion (TCI). As the first loading dose, 25 mg/kg of vancomycin was administered during 60-90 min. Arterial blood samples were obtained at pre-set intervals to measure the serum concentrations of vancomycin. Population pharmacokinetic analysis was performed using the NONMEM software (ICON Development Solutions). In total, 197 serum concentration measurements from 22 patients were used to characterise the pharmacokinetics of vancomycin. A three-compartment mammillary model best described the pharmacokinetics of vancomycin in critically ill patients. The ideal body weight was a significant covariate for the central and slow peripheral volume of distribution. The weight and age converted to categorical variables at a cut-off of 65 years were a significant covariate for the clearance. Based on the results of stochastic simulation, the TCI method maintained the therapeutic concentration range for the longest duration. In addition, assuming that vancomycin was administered by the TCI method for 7 days, the dose was reduced by about 15% compared with the standard administration methods. The daily area under the curve values were maintained between 500 mg·h/L and 600 mg·h/L. TCI has the potential to become a new infusion method for patient-tailored dosing in critically ill patients. Tilia species are valuable woody species due to their beautiful shape and role as honey trees. Somatic embryogenesis can be an alternative method for mass propagation of T. amurensis. However, the molecular mechanisms of T. amurensis somatic embryogenesis are yet to be known. Here, we conducted comparative transcriptional analysis during somatic embryogenesis of T. amurensis. RNA-Seq identified 1505 differentially expressed genes, including developmental regulatory genes. Auxin related genes such as YUC, AUX/IAA and ARF and signal transduction pathway related genes including LEA and SERK were differentially regulated during somatic embryogenesis. Also, B3 domain family (LEC2, FUS3), VAL and PKL, the regulatory transcription factors, were differentially expressed by somatic embryo developmental stages. Our results could provide plausible pathway of signaling somatic embryogenesis of T. amurensis, and serve an important resource for further studies in direct somatic embryogenesis in woody plants.

Background and objectives: The study assesses quality of life (QoL) in patients who underwent thyroidectomy compared to the general population. Materials and Methods: QoL data from post-thyroidectomy patients and individuals with no subjective health concerns, who had attended a routine health screening visit, were evaluated. QoL was assessed using the modified version of Korean Short Form 12 questionnaire (SF-12). Patients and controls were matched using the propensity score approach and a ratio of 1:4. Results: Data from a total of 105 patients and 420 controls were analyzed. For five SF-12 items, lower QoL was found in patients ( p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis revealed that a follow-up duration of <1-year, female sex, and an age of >50 years were independent risk factors. No significant difference was found between controls and patients who were >1-year post-surgery. Conclusions: For specific SF-12 items, QoL was lower in post-thyroidectomy patients than in controls. No intergroup difference in QoL was found >1-year post-surgery.

Background: Gender and fertility variation have an impact on mating dynamics in a population because they affect the gene exchange among parental members and the genetic composition of the resultant seed crops. Fertility is the proportional gametic contribution of parents to their progeny. An effective number of parents, derivative of effective population size, is the probability that two alleles randomly chosen from the gamete gene pool originated from the same parent. The effective number of parents is directly related to the fertility variation among parents, which should be monitored for manipulating gene diversity of seed crops. We formulated a fundamental equation of estimating the effective number of parents and applied it to a seed production population., Results: Effective number of parents (N p ) was derived from fertility variation (Ψ) considering covariance (correlation coefficient, r) between maternal and paternal fertility. The Ψ was calculated from the coefficient of variation in reproductive outputs and divided into female (ψ f ) and male (ψ m ) fertility variation in the population under study. The N p was estimated from the parental Ψ estimated by the fertility variation of maternal (ψ f ) and paternal (ψ m ) parents. The gene diversity of seed crops was monitored by Ψ and N p . in a 1.5 generation Pinus koraiensis seed orchard as a case of monoecious species. A large variation of female and male strobili production was observed among the studied 52 parents over four consecutive years, showing statistically significant differences across all studied years. Parental balance curve showed greater distortion in paternal than maternal parents. The Ψ ranged from 1.879 to 4.035 with greater ψ m than ψ f , and the N p varied from 14.8 to 36.8. When pooled, the relative effective number of parents was improved as 80.0% of the census number., Conclusions: We recommend the use of fertility variation (i.e., CV, Ψ), Person's product-moment correlation (r), and effective number of parents (N p ) as tools for gauging gene diversity of seed crops in production populations. For increasing N p and gene diversity, additional management options such as mixing seed-lots, equal cone harvest and application of supplemental-mass-pollination are recommended.
