Abstract

IoT has long since come to the pet industry resulting in a proliferation of data-intensive devices including tracking anything from activity, health, to location. The resulting ‘Internet of Pets’ is generating large volumes of animal data which, due to the close link between the digital profile of companion animals held as pets (e.g., cats and dogs) and their caregivers holds significant security and privacy implications. In this case study we explore the vulnerability of such pet wearables to side-channel attacks, describing our implementation of an electromagnetic attack on a now discontinued dog activity tracker. We show how we were able to successfully exfiltrate data from the device during the Base64 encoding process and discuss what implications this holds for the security of these devices, given the lack of protection that animal data is afforded under extant existing data protection policy and legislation. 36. The Effects of Padé Numerical Integration in Simulation of Conservative Chaotic Systems

Abstract

In this paper, we consider nonlinear integration techniques, based on direct Padé approximation of the differential equation solution, and their application to conservative chaotic initial value problems. The properties of discrete maps obtained by nonlinear integration are studied, including phase space volume dynamics, bifurcation diagrams, spectral entropy, and the Lyapunov spectrum. We also plot 2D dynamical maps to enlighten the features introduced by nonlinear integration techniques. The comparative study of classical integration methods and Padé approximation methods is given. It is shown that nonlinear integration techniques significantly change the behavior of discrete models of nonlinear systems, increasing the values of Lyapunov exponents and spectral entropy. This property reduces the applicability of numerical methods based on Padé approximation to the chaotic system simulation but it is still useful for construction of pseudo-random number generators that are resistive to chaos degradation or discrete maps with highly nonlinear properties.

37. Optimal Estimation of Wavelet Decomposition Level for a Matching Pursuit Algorithm

Abstract

In this paper, we consider the application of the matching pursuit algorithm (MPA) for spectral analysis of non-stationary signals. First, we estimate the approximation error and the performance time for various MPA modifications and parameters using central processor unit and graphics processing unit (GPU) to identify possible ways to improve the algorithm. Next, we propose the modifications of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and package wavelet decomposition (PWD) for further use in MPA. We explicitly show that the optimal decomposition level, defined as a level with minimum entropy, in DWT and PWD provides the minimum approximation error and the smallest execution time when applied in MPA as a rough estimate in the case of using wavelets as basis functions (atoms). We provide an example of entropy-based estimation for optimal decomposition level in spectral analysis of seismic signals. The proposed modification of the algorithm significantly reduces its computational costs. Results of spectral analysis obtained with MPA can be used for various signal processing applications, including denoising, clustering, classification, and parameter estimation.

Abstract

Featured Application: Nowadays digital filters are widely used in receivers of different software-defined radio (SDR) communication systems. The main factor affecting the development of SDR is the characteristics of analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters. SDR technology allows us to replace existing and developed designs of receivers and transceivers of a heterodyne structure with a limited number of hardware units controlled by specialized software. This helps to simplify the constructions, make them cheaper, improve their performance, and support any modulation types. Furthermore, such an approach can be fruitful in signal reception and demodulation for different types of digital modulations such as DPSK, QAM, GMSK, etc. The main operations in the SDR receiver are heterodyning and filtering, which are performed digitally. In this case, digital filtering determines almost all parameters of the output channel of such a receiver. Therefore, the parameters of digital filters in these receivers have to meet more strict requirements, including the accuracy of calculations and hardware costs. The use of finite field algebra will significantly increase the accuracy of calculations in digital filters of such receivers and reduce hardware costs. The applications of digital filters based on finite field algebra codes require their conjugation with positional computing structures. Here arises the task of algorithms and structures developed for converting the positional notation codes to finite field algebra codes. The paper proposes a method for codes conversion that possesses several advantages over existing methods. The possibilities and benefits of optimization of the computational channel structure for digital filter functioning based on the codes of finite field algebra are shown. The modified structure of computational channel is introduced. It differs from the traditional structure by the fact that there is no explicit code converter in it. The main principle is that the "reference" values of input samples, which are free from the error of the analog-digital converter, are used as input samples.
