Single walled carbon nanotubes as emerging quantum-light sources may fill a technological gap in silicon photonics due to their potential use as near infrared, electrically driven, classical or non-classical emitters. Unlike in photoluminescence, where nanotubes are excited with light, electrical excitation of single tubes is challenging and heavily influenced by device fabrication, architecture and biasing conditions. Here we present electroluminescence spectroscopy data of ultra short channel devices made from (9,8) carbon nanotubes emitting in the telecom band. Emissions are stable under current biasing and no quenching is observed down to 10 nm gap size. Low-temperature electroluminescence spectroscopy data also reported exhibits cold emission and linewidths down to 2 meV at 4 K. Electroluminescence excitation maps give evidence that carrier recombination is the mechanism for light generation in short channels. Excitonic and trionic emissions can be switched on and off by gate voltage and corresponding emission efficiency maps were compiled. Insights are gained into the influence of acoustic phonons on the linewidth, absence of intensity saturation and exciton exciton annihilation, environmental effects like dielectric screening and strain on the emission wavelength, and conditions to suppress hysteresis and establish optimum operation conditions.

Small cationic fullerene fragments, produced by electron impact ionization of C60, were mass-selected and accumulated in cryogenic Ne matrixes. Optical absorption spectroscopy of these fragments with up to 18 carbon atoms revealed linear structures. Considering the recent discovery of fullerenes in Space and the very strong absorptions of long linear carbon clusters both in the UV-Vis and IR spectral regions, these systems are good candidates to be observed in Space. We have observed that C$_{60}^+$ ions isolated in cryogenic matrixes show pronounced near-IR photoluminescence upon excitation in the near-IR range. By contrast UV photoexcitation does not lead to measurable luminescence. After the recent unequivocal assignment of five Diffuse Interstellar Bands to near-IR absorption bands of C$_{60}^+$, we propose to search also for C$_{60}^+$ near-IR emission in those astronomical objects, where fullerenes have been already detected or may be potentially present.

The length of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is an important metric for the integration of SWCNTs into devices and for the performance of SWCNT-based electronic or optoelectronic applications. In this work we propose a rather simple method based on electric-field induced differential absorption spectroscopy (EFIDAS) to measure the chiral-index-resolved average length of SWCNTs in dispersions. The method takes advantage of the electric-field induced length-dependent dipole moment of nanotubes and has been verified and calibrated by atomic force microscopy. This method not only provides a low cost, in-situ approach for length measurements of SWCNTs in dispersion, but due to the sensitivity of the method to the SWCNT chiral index, the chiral index dependent average length of fractions obtained by chromatographic sorting can also be derived. C58 fullerenes were adsorbed onto room temperature Au(111) surface by low-energy (~6 eV) cluster ion beam deposition under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. The topographic and electronic properties of the deposits were monitored by means of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM at 4.2 K). Topographic images reveal that at low coverages fullerene cages are pinned by point dislocation defects on the herringbone reconstructed gold terraces (as well as by step edges). At intermediate coverages, pinned monomers, act as nucleation centres for the formation of oligomeric C58 chains and 2D islands. At the largest coverages studied, the surface becomes covered by 3D interlinked C58 cages. STM topographic images of pinned single adsorbates are essentially featureless. The corresponding local densities of states are consistent with strong cage-substrate interactions. Topographic images of [C58]n oligomers show a stripe-like intensity pattern oriented perpendicular to the axis connecting the cage centers. This striped pattern becomes even more pronounced in maps of the local density of states. As supported by density functional theory, DFT calculations, and also by analogous STM images previously obtained for C60 polymers (M. Nakaya et al., J. Nanosci. Nanotechnol. 11, 2829 (2011)), we conclude that these striped orbital patterns are a fingerprint of covalent intercage bonds. For thick C58 films we have derived a band gap of 1.2 eV from scanning tunnelling spectroscopy data, STS, confirming that the outermost C58 layer behaves as a wide band semiconductor.

We have measured the electroluminescence and photoluminescence of (9,7) semiconducting carbon nanotube devices and demonstrate that the electroluminescence wavelength is determined by the nanotube's chiral index (n,m). The devices were fabricated on Si3N4 membranes by dielectrophoretic assembly of tubes from monochiral dispersion. Electrically driven (9,7) devices exhibit a single Lorentzian shaped emission peak at 825 nm in the visible part of the spectrum. The emission could be assigned to the excitonic E22 interband transition by comparison of the electroluminescence spectra with corresponding photoluminescence excitation maps. We show a linear dependence of the EL peak width on the electrical current, and provide evidence for the inertness of Si3N4 surfaces with respect to the nanotubes optical properties., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Optics Express

The fabrication of metallic single-walled carbon nanotube electrodes separated by gaps of typically 20nm width by electron-beam-induced oxidation is studied within an active device configuration. The tube conductance is measured continuously during the process. The experiment provides a statistical evaluation of gap sizes as well as the electron dose needed for gap formation.
