Abstract

Low-temperature-resistivity plateau observed in $\rm SmB_6$ single crystal,which is due to surface, not bulk, conduction has been confirmed from electrical transport measurements. Recently, the correlation between bulk thermodynamic measurements and the low-temperature-resistance plateau in $\rm SmB_6$ have been investigated and a change in Sm valence at the surface has been obtained from x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Abstract

The temperature dependence of the pre-edge features in x-ray absorption spectroscopy is reviewed. Then, the temperature dependence of the pre-edge structure at the K-edge of titanium in rutile TiO2 is measured at low and room temperature. The first two peaks grow with temperature. Abstract

Gaining control over the grafting geometry is critically important for any application of surface‐supported single‐molecule magnets (SMMs) in data storage, spintronics, and quantum information science. Here, tetrairon(III) SMMs with a propeller‐like structure are functionalized with thioacetyl‐terminated alkyl chains to promote chemisorption on gold surfaces from solution and to evaluate differences in adsorption geometry and magnetic properties as a function of chain length. The prepared monolayers are investigated using X‐ray absorption techniques with linearly and circularly polarized light to extract geometrical and magnetic information, respectively. All derivatives remain intact and form partially oriented monolayers on the gold surface. A ligand‐field analysis of the observed X‐ray natural linear dichroism shows that the threefold molecular axis is invariably biased toward the surface normal, in agreement with ab initio calculations. This preferential orientation is most pronounced in monolayers of the shortest‐chain derivative, which are further studied with an ultralow temperature X‐ray magnetic circular dichroism setup operating down to 350 mK. The isothermal field sweeps with the magnetic field at normal incidence show an open hysteresis loop below 1 K, while measurements at different incidence angles prove the magnetic anisotropy of the monolayers. Abstract

Fe8 high-spin molecules exhibit quantum spin tunneling at very low temperatures. Eight Fe3+ ions are sixfold coordinated and magnetically coupled through oxygen bridges. The net magnetization (MS=20 μB per molecule) results from competing antiferromagnetic interactions between the various Fe3+ ions (S=5/2). Because of the structural anisotropy of these molecules, the magnetization curve presents a hysteresis loop with staircases below 2 K. The staircases of the hysteresis loop are due to the quantum spin tunneling, which is temperature dependent for 400 mK3He-4He dilution refrigerator. This device, that takes advantage of the thermodynamic particularities of the 3He-4He mix, let us obtain x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra at 300 mK for this molecule. It has been possible to register an XMCD remnant signal, without magnetic field applied, at the iron L2,3 edges. XMCD coupled with ligand field multiplet calculations has allowed to determine the spin and orbit contributions to the magnetization of the Fe3+ ions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

6 pages, 8 figures; International audience; Structural, magnetization and heat capacity measurements were performed on Ce2(Pd1-xNix)2Sn compounds covering the full range of the Mo2FeB2 structure stability (0 x 0.25). In this system, the two transitions observed in Ce2Pd2Sn (antiferromagnetic TN=4.8 K and ferromagnetic TC=2.1 K) converge into a tri-critical point at Tcr 3.4 K for xcr 0.3, where the intermediate antiferromagnetic AF phase is suppressed. The decrease of the TN(x) phase boundary is due to an incipient Kondo screening of the Ce-4f moments. This effect and the increase of local atomic disorder affect the formation of Ce-magnetic dimers on which the Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) builds up. On the contrary, the TC(x) transition to the ferromagnetic ground state increases as a consequence of the weakening of the intermediate phase. Applied magnetic fields also suppress the AF-SSL phase as it was already observed in the stoichiometric compound.

Abstract

Advances in the synthesis of new materials with often complex, nano-scaled structures require increasingly sophisticated experimental techniques that can probe the electronic states, the atomic magnetic moments and the magnetic microstructures responsible for the properties of these materials. At the same time, progress in synchrotron radiation techniques has ensured that these light sources remain a key tool of investigation, e.g. synchrotron radiation sources of the third generation are able to support magnetic imaging on a sub-micrometer scale. With the Fifth Mittelwihr School on Magnetism and Synchrotron Radiation the tradition of teaching the state-of-the-art on modern research developments continues and is expressed through the present set of extensive lectures provided in this volume. While primarily aimed at postgraduate students and newcomers to the field, this volume will also benefit researchers and lecturers actively working in the field.
