Abstract\nNOVELTY STATEMENTSynthetic dyes are a major source of environmental pollution. In this regard, biosorption is an important treatment method for the removal and detoxification of synthetic dyes from aqueous solutions. Accordingly, the present study was conducted to investigate the potential of Robinia pseudoacacia L. biosorbent (RPF) in the removal of crystal violet (CV) dye from aqueous solutions. To this end, biosorption parameters, including zero charge point, pH, initial dye concentration, biosorbent dose, stirring speed, and temperature, were investigated. Variations in the treated and untreated biosorbent surfaces were characterized using FTIR spectroscopy. The results showed that the RPF biosorbent removed 77% of CV under optimal conditions: pH of 6, initial dye concentration of 10 mg/L, biosorbent dose of 1 g, contact time of 30 min, stirring speed of 150 rpm, and temperature of 298 K. The Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm (R2= 0.976) and pseudo-second-order kinetic (R2 = 0.995) models were well fitted according to isotherm and kinetic studies. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the process was endothermic according to the ΔG values. Moreover, the phytotoxicity of treated CV solutions was significantly reduced. Thus, the RPF biosorbent was determined to be a low-cost, sustainable, and ecofriendly material for the removal and detoxification of synthetic dyes from aqueous solutions.Biosorption, an innovative approach for the removal of dyes from aqueous solutions, utilizes a great variety of biological materials, mainly wastes, as biosorbents and is widely accepted owing to its unique advantages, including effective treatment capacity, eco-friendly nature, and higher sustainability. Nuclear applications are being increasingly used in various fields, necessitating studies to protect from radiation hazards and their effects. In this study, five different chemical structures of pyrazolo [3,4-b] pyridine derivatives were synthesized. The gamma and neutron radiation protective abilities of these samples were determined and demonstrated their potential use as ingredients in radioprotective drugs. Gamma radiation absorption parameters were calculated both theoretical and experimental. Important attenuation parameters for fast neutrons (4.5 MeV energy radiation) were figured out using the Monte Carlo simulation Geant4 code. Additionally, experimental dose rates were measured for each sample and compared to those of Paraffin and high-density polyethylene, an organic substance. Besides, Ames/Salmonella test system was aimed to detecting genotoxicity features of pyrazolo pyridine derivatives. All results demonstrated that each sample possesses both gamma and neutron radiation attenuation capabilities. It was determined that sample PPC4 (C20H14BrN5) exhibited the highest gamma radiation attenuation capacity among all samples, while sample PPC2 (C22H20N6) displayed an excellent neutron stopping capacity. The genotoxic properties of pyrazolo[3,4-b] pyridine derivatives were examined using the Ames/Salmonella test, and as a result, it was determined that these substances did not exhibit genotoxic effects at test doses up to 5 mM. All obtained results indicate that all PPC (pyrazolo[3,4-b] pyridine derivatives) samples do not possess a toxic effect, and they can be utilized as an active substance for the development of a drug or cream with protective properties against both gamma and neutron radiations. Palandöken Mountain is among the highest and coldest ecosystems of Türkiye, and knowledge on its microbial diversity has not been adequately characterized. The aim of the present study is to expand the current understanding of microbial diversity in Palandöken Mountain. Sampling studies were carried out at in winter an altitude of 2400–2900 m. A next-generation sequencing (NGS) based culture-independent approach was employed for elucidating the community structure in the 8 cryoconite samples using 16S and 23S rRNA gene sequencing. In addition, biotechnologically important cold-adapted enzyme producers were isolated and identified by employing conventional culture-dependent studies. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed the presence of 36 bacterial and 2 fungal phyla. The bacterial communities of 8 samples were dominated by Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes and Acidobacteria. The fungal communities were dominated by Ascomycota and Basidiomycota. 2900 different taxonomic group for bacterial diversity and 51 for fungal diversity were reported in the present study. Furthermore, 25 cold-adapted enzyme-producers were isolated and identified in the culture-dependent studies. Each selected isolate was capable of producing at least one of the enzymes amylase, protease, lipase, cellulase and xylanase isolates were assigned to Aspergillus, Bacillus, Cladosporium, Dioszegia, Flavobacterium, Fusarium, Holtermanniella, Naganishia, Polaromonas, Protomyces, Pseudomonas Rhodosporidiobolus, Vishniacozyma and Yarrowia genera. Consequently, this is the first geomicrobiological investigation that describes bacterial and fungal diversity of cryoconites from Palandöken Mountain using an NGS-based culture-independent approach. Additionally, cultured cold-adapted enzyme producer isolates of the present study have a valuable potential for the development of new biotechnological tools for various industrial applications. Five different types of synthesized azadispiro derivatives have been analyzed for radiation absorption capacity and determined their potential to be exploited as substances for a drug to be developed against radiation has been investigated. Fast neutron attenuation parameters like the effective mean free path, half-value layer (HVL), removal cross-sections, and neutron transmission number were found with the Monte Carlo simulation Geometry And Tracking (GEANT4) code. Gamma radiation absorption parameters, such as effective atom number (Zeff), mean free path (MFP), mass attenuation coefficient (MAC), and half-value layer (HVL) were theoretically determined with WinXCom software. Besides, the exposure build-up factor (EBF) was calculated by using GP fitting parameters. Neutron absorption dose rate was experimentally calculated with 241Am-Be fast neutron source which has 4.5 MeV of energy, 74 GBq activity, and portative BF3 neutron detector. Ames/Salmonella test systems were used for the genotoxic potentials of the azadispiro derivatives Experimental and theoretical results were checked with paraffin and High-Density Polyethylene. The results showed that Azadispiro derivatives have neutron radiation absorption capability close to paraffin and High-Density Polyethylene. The gamma radiation absorption properties for azadispiro derivatives have been investigated, and it has been observed that these materials can absorb gamma radiation. Ames/Salmonella assay was used to examine whether the derivatives had a genotoxic effect probability or not. The results showed that these derivatives were genotoxic and safe at test doses (up to 5 mM). Consequently, it has been understood that these azadispiro derivatives can be used as active and genotoxic safety ingredients in the production of a protective drug against both neutrons and gamma rays. Biosorption was carried out using Fraxinus excelsior L. (Oleaceae) (FEO) as a natural waste to remove methylene blue from aqueous solutions. Based on the results of the study carried out under optimum conditions (pH: 6, initial dye concentration: 5 mg/L, biosorbent dose: 1 g, contact time: 30 min, stirring speed: 150 rpm, and temperature: 298 K), the FEO biosorbent removed 89% of methylene blue from aqueous solutions. In addition, parameters affecting biosorption (pH, initial dye concentration, biosorbent dose, temperature, and stirring speed) were examined, and isotherm, kinetic, and thermodynamic studies were performed. Freundlich, Langmuir, Elovich, Temkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherms were calculated in the isotherm studies, and the Freundlich isotherm was higher than the others. The correlation coefficient of pseudo-second-order kinetic model was higher than for the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The ΔG values from the thermodynamic studies showed that the process occurred spontaneously. Consequently, the FEO biosorbent is suitable in removing synthetic dyes from aqueous solutions due to its effectiveness, low cost, and eco-friendly characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are various studies on the toxicological potentials of conventionally synthesized zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles, which are useful tools for many industrial applications. However, knowledge about the biologically synthesized ones is still limited. The current study was designed to biologically synthesize ZnO nanoparticles from zinc acetate, zinc chloride, zinc nitrate hexahydrate and zinc sulfate heptahydrate precursors by Rhodococcus erythropolis K85 and assess their toxicological potentials on Triticum aestivum. ZnO nanoparticles were successfully synthesized from each precursor and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX) analysis. The size of produced nanoparticles ranged from 50 to 150 nm and none of the test groups affected seed germination at 0.1 mg/ml concentration. However, seedling growth was significantly affected by ZnO nanoparticle exposure. Besides, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis results showed a conformity to the seedling growth results and all of the test groups caused significant changes in the RAPD profiles for OPA-2, OPA-13, OPH-19, OPW-6, OPW-11, OPW-17, OPW-18 and OPY-8 primers. This resulted in a significant decrease in genomic template stability percentage (GTS%) and an increase in polymorphism percentage values. In conclusion, this study confirms that ZnO nanoparticles may show significant toxicological features -- even if they are biologically synthesized and it is necessary to determine their hazardous potential before use. The study investigated the antidiabetic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and genotoxic activities of extracts from Centaurea amanicola and C. antitauri (Asteraceae). Methanol extracts were analysed for phenolic and fatty oil contents. Major components of fatty oils were identified, including methyl hexadecanoate (48.30%) and heptacosane (22.13%) in C. antitauri , and methyl hexadecanoate (16.29%) and methyl linoleate (13.55%) in C. amanicola . The highest α-amylase inhibition was observed in hexane extracts of both species with 55.53% and 41.57% inhibition values, respectively. Antioxidant activity, measured by ABTS •+ and DPPH • scavenging, varied among extracts, with notable efficacy in C. antitauri dichloromethane extract and C. amanicola ethyl acetate extract. The dichloromethane extract of C. antitauri demonstrated effectiveness against Candida albicans with MIC= 156.25 µg/mL. Importantly, all extracts were found to be genotoxicity-safe. Overall, the findings highlight the potential of these extracts for various medicinal applications, particularly in managing diabetes and combating microbial infections.

Essential oil content of and phenolic compounds flower-fruit, root, and aerial parts of Heracleum pastinacifolium subsp. incanum were analysed by GC/MS and LC/MS methods, respectively. Antidiabetic, anticholinesterase, and antioxidant activities of flower-fruit, root, aerial parts methanol extracts were evaluated. Apiole (35.0%), myristicine (72.2%), and myristicine (15.1%) were found as major compounds of fruit-flower mixture, root, aerial part essential oils, respectively. Hesperidin was found the highest amount in aerial part and flower-fruit extracts with 8904.2621 ng/mL and 11558.3634 ng/mL values, respectively. Fruit-flower extract showed the highest activity against α -glucosidase (24%). Root extract demonstrating the highest activity (18%) against AChE enzyme. Flowers-fruits mixture methanol extract had a higher % inhibition value on ABTS ·+ and DPPH • . Flowers-fruits mixture methanol extract was rich in total phenol, total tannin, and protein content. All the extracts were determined as genetoxically safe according to the results of Ames/ Salmonella , Escherichia coli WP2 and Allium cepa assays.

A phytoalexin polyphenolic chemical, resveratrol, can be found in a variety of foods, including cereals, peanuts, grapes, strawberries, and raspberries. It is also known that resveratrol protects the body against cardiovascular diseases as well as various types of cancer. In addition to these health issues, resveratrol is currently the subject of research since it helps treat and prevent a number of illnesses. More clinical research is needed to validate resveratrol's potential as a therapeutic agent, despite the plethora of in vitro and in vivo evidence to support this. When the literature data are evaluated, the fact that resveratrol has a therapeutic effect in these studies, but it is known to be subject to rapid metabolism despite its low bioavailability and oral absorption of approximately 75%, has directed the studies to resveratrol derivatives, especially piceatannol. Based on recent studies, 4 types of resveratrol derivatives were assessed in this work: hydroxylated compounds, methoxylated compounds, glycosides, and oligomers. Because of their advantageous bioactivities, methoxylated, hydroxylated, and halogenated derivatives have drawn the most interest among these classes. However, as a result of these studies, more studies should be conducted to better understand whether resveratrol derivatives can be recommended as therapeutic agents.

Intestinal microbiota, which plays an important role in human health by interacting with each other or with its hosts, is afected by many endogenous and exogenous factors. Any change in the composition and functionality of the intestinal microbiota, both in number and diversity, causes disruption of intestinal functioning and paves the way for many diseases. In this regard, many antimicrobial peptides, especially bacteriocins, synthesized by lactic acid bacteria are thought to be natural resources with a high potential for the protection of the intestinal microbiota and the treatment of intestinal diseases. Both the intestinal microbiota itself and many foodborne bacteria produce bacteriocins that can inhibit pathogenic microorganisms that cause serious health problems and regulate the intestinal microbiota. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the intestinal microbiota, the properties of lactic acid bacteria, their bacteriocins, and the efects of bacteriocins on the human health.
