The aim of the article is to present the efforts made over the last hundred years to maintain the knowledge of the native tongue among Karaims in Poland and Lithuania. After World War I, the awareness of the importance of the vernacular language for the preservation of cultural heritage increased, but the knowledge of the Karaim has been systematically declining. In the last 30 years, attempts to revitalize the mother tongue have intensified. Nevertheless, with the rapidly declining Karaim populations in Poland and Lithuania, the level of language proficiency is dropping even faster. The North-Western dialect is the only one still spoken today. In recent years, field recordings are being made to preserve the sound of the Karaim, which is listed on the UNESCO Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger. Currently, out of about 300 people living in Poland and Lithuania, only ten percent can speak their ancestors’ tongue.

Gabriel Firkowicz (1818-1869), a Karaim, son-in-law and associate of Abraham Firkowicz (1787-1874), as well as manager of his finances, is a relatively unknown figure, often overlooked or mentioned briefly, frequently with incorrect data and usually only in the context of his relationship with his famous father-in-law. This article attempts to define more precisely the dates of life, origin and functions performed by Gabriel Firkowicz. For this purpose, among others, original documents from 1764-1869 kept in archives in Vilnius and in private resources in Warsaw were consulted. The available studies of other source documents referring to the Karaims of Troki, Kukizow and Crimea allowed the author of this article to look at the Firkowicz family origins and the functions performed by the protagonist of this text. Publications contemporary to the character in question were also used. As a result, it was possible to determine the year of Gabriel Firkowicz’s birth and the exact date of his death as well as the place he was buried. Also at least two generations of his ancestors and their places of residence were identified. Queries into address guides provided new data on his role of a Karaite hazzan, years and the places where he performed this function.

Artykuł ten poświęcony jest sytuacji trzech żydowskich mniejszości religijnych w Państwie Izraela, które mają dwie wspólne cechy: uznają tylko prawo pisane (Torę) i nie trzymają się tradycji ustnej (znajdującej się w Talmudzie) lub odrzucają ją. Są to: etiopscy Żydzi, czyli Beta Israel, Karaimi i prawdopodobnie najstarsza mojżeszowa gałąź judaizmu - Samarytanie. Historyczny judaizm Samarytan wydaje się nie podlegać dyskusji, być może ze względu na niewielką liczebność grupy. Karaimi borykają się głównie z problemami związanymi z uznaniem ich za gminę żydowską przez przedstawicieli rabinatu. Społeczność Beta Israel, a zwłaszcza jej młodsze pokolenie, próbuje się uporać się ze stopniową asymilacją, identyfikacją z religią głównego nurtu i stereotypami rasowymi. This article is devoted to the situation of three Jewish religious minorities in the State of Israel, having two things in common: they recognize the written law (the Torah) only and do not follow the oral tradition (found in the Talmud), or reject it. They are: Ethiopian Jews, or Beta Israel, Karaites, and probably the oldest Mosaic branch of Judaism - the Samaritans. The Samaritans’ historical Judaism seems not to be in dispute, possibly due to the small size of the group. Karaites mainly face problems related to the recognition of them as a Jewish community by representatives of the rabbinate. Beta Israel community, especially its younger generation deals with gradual assimilation, identification with the mainstream religion, and racial stereotypes.

This article details the history of Karaim Literature Wednesday, an event which took place on November 9, 1932 in the “Room of Konrad” of the Basilian monastery on Ostrobramska street in Vilnius. It was one of 371 popular and authoritative weekly events organized during the interwar period by the Vilnius Branch of the Polish Writers Labour Union. During this event, Hachan Seraja Szapszał - the leader of Polish Karaims - gave a lecture on the history and culture of his nation, after which several Karaim songs were sung by Walentyna and Halina Łobanosówny, accompanied by Lidia Szole on the piano. The songs were broadcast by the Vilnius Radio, and aroused great interest among the listeners. Using source material from the private archive of Józef Sulimowicz in Warsaw, I have attempted to recreate Karaim Literature Wednesday, in particular the diversity, origin and richness of Karaim songs. The annex to this article contains the original lyrics to 19 Karaim songs written in the Karaim language, most of which were sung at the event.

W literaturze karaimskiej powstało niewiele katechizmów. Najwcześniejsze hebrajskojęzyczne manuskrypty pochodzą z lat 1729-1820. Znaleźć tu można zapiski dla przygotowujących się do egzaminu na stanowisko rzezaka, dyplom poświadczający uzyskanie tytułu ribbiego, oraz pojedyncze konspekty służące do utrwalania przyswajanej wiedzy, sporządzone przez anonimowe osoby na własny użytek. Pierwsza publikacja skryptu do nauki religii pod tytułem Ṭuḇ Ṭa‘am – w klasycznej formie pytań i odpowiedzi – ukazała się w karaimskim języku krymskotureckim w roku 1835 w Gözleve na Półwyspie Krymskim. Pod koniec XIX wieku nauczyciel karaimski z Sankt-Petersburga Jakub Duwan zapoczątkował okres wydawania rosyjskojęzycznych katechizmów, których objętość różniła się, od zwięzłych i krótkich, po szczegółowe i wielostronicowe pozycje. Są to, między innymi: Katechizm, podstawy prawa karaimskiego J. Duwana z 1890 roku, Skrócony katechizm Jakuba Szamasza z 1913 roku, Karaimski katechizm w skrócie Mojżesza Firkowicza z 1915 roku oraz Główne zasady karaimskiego nauczania Prawa Salomona Prika z 1917 roku. Po II wojnie światowej w 1946 roku Ananiasz Zajączkowski ułożył polskojęzyczny skrypt do nauki religii pod tytułem Zarys religii karaimskiej, który pierwotnie miał być wydany na rozpoczęcie nowego roku szkolnego, choć do wdrożenia go w karaimski system edukacyjny nigdy nie doszło. Przedstawiona czytelnikowi monografia jest próbą zaprezentowania i zanalizowania literatury katechetycznej, tworzonej przez karaimów na terenach wschodnioeuropejskich, odtwarzającą i ocalającą od zapomnienia nie tylko religijne piśmiennictwo społeczności karaimskiej, ale także i bogatą kulturę hebrajską. Stanowi ona ważne źródło duchowego życia społeczności karaimskiej, zawierające oficjalną wykładnię zasad wiary i etyki, a także odzwierciedla – choć w mniejszym stopniu – proces formowania się i klarowania nowej tożsamości narodowej karaimów.

The first scholar to research the Karaim community in Eastern Europe was Count Thaddeus Czacki (1765–1813). Initially, in his capacity as a member of the government commission in the First Republic of Poland, he dealt with the issue of taxes levied on the Karaim population. In 1788 he advocated their exemption from the poll tax. It may have been he himself who was behind the Karaim petition from Lutsk written in 1790 and addressed to the Polish parliament. This appeal called for a separate tax arrangement for Karaims distinct from that for the Jews. After the collapse of the Polish state, Czacki remained a spokesperson for the interests of the Polish Karaims in the Russian Empire. Evidence of this is a letter sent to him in 1807 by the Karaims of Lutsk. Count Czacki became a member of the committee for the solution of Jewish affairs established by Tsar Alexander I. It is in this context that we should read his essays on Jews and Karaims, published in Vilnius in 1807 and translated into Russian. Thanks to his endeavours, he can justly be called the father of Karaim studies. Uczonym, który jako pierwszy rozpoczął badania nad Karaimami we Wschodniej Europie, był hrabia Tadeusz Czacki (1765–1813). Początkowo w Pierwszej Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej, jako członek komisji rządowej, zajmował się Czacki kwestią podatków ludności karaimskiej. Był w 1788 r. zwolennikiem zwolnienia jej od podatku pogłównego. Możliwe, że był on inicjatorem petycji Karaimów z Łucka, napisanej w 1790 r. do polskiego sejmu. Memoriał wzywał do uchwalenia organizacji podatkowej dla Karaimów, odrębnej od Żydów. Po upadku państwa polskiego, Czacki był nadal rzecznikiem interesów polskich Karaimów w Cesarstwie Rosyjskim. Świadczy o tym list wysłany w 1807 r. do niego przez Karaimów Łucka. Hrabia Czacki został członkiem powołanego przez cara Aleksandra I komitetu dla rozwiązania spraw żydowskich. W takim kontekście należy odczytać jego rozprawki o Żydach i o Karaimach, wydane w 1807 r. i tłumaczone na rosyjski. Dzięki temu może on być nazwany ojcem karaimistyki.

Zarach Zarachowicz was born in Halicz in 1890. He was the son of Mojsz and Estera neé Eszwowicz, members of the local Karaite community, whose origins reputedly go back to the mid-13th century. In 1915, Zarachowicz left Halicz for Simferopol in the Crimea. This is where he went to a Karaite religious school. After World War I he returned to Halicz, got a job in the District Court and engaged in the activity of the Karaite community. In 1919 he was elected member of its board and secretary. He also began to engage in Karaite cultural activities. He was one of the founders, editors and contributors to „Myśl Karaimska”, a scientific, literary and social periodical which appeared in Vilnius from 1924 to 1939. In 1929, Seraj Markowicz Szapszał, the hakham (superior) of the Karaites in Poland, appointed Zarachowicz a junior hazzan in Halicz. The ceremony of presenting the appointment to Karaite clergyman and the new hazzan’s first service took place in the kenesa in Halicz on December 21, 1929. A detailed account of the occasion was preserved in the form of a letter from Halicz hazzan Izaak Abrahamowicz to Szapszał. Despite his pastoral duties, Zarachowicz continued to be active in the social and cultural field. He became a member of the board of the Society of of Friends of Karaite History and Literature, set up in Vilnius, and was also member of the editorial board of the periodical „Myśl Karaimska”. He also published his articles in the Karaim-language periodical „Karaj Awazy” published in Łuck. From 1933 he acted as senior hazzan in Halicz. After the World War II Zarachowicz continued to work in the Halicz court as clerk. However, he was persecuted by the Soviet authorities for holding the office of a Karaite clergyman. On December 11, 1952 he took his life by plunging into the Dniester, leaving a wife and three children.
