Grieving children are at risk for negative outcomes (American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 2020). This study described a collaboration between a community agency and a large school district to create and implement groups for grieving children. A preliminary evaluation of the effectiveness of these groups was conducted. Quantitative and qualitative data from 318 students, 59 group facilitators, and 59 school counselors indicated that the grief group was a promising intervention for diverse students with regard to enhancing awareness about grief, reducing isolation, providing a place to share feelings, and learning coping strategies after the death of a significant person. This research may inform the development, implementation, and evaluation of other important interventions established through community partnerships to prevent negative outcomes associated with unattended grief in childhood.

The purpose of this study was to conduct a randomized controlled trial to assess the efficacy of CARES, an online intervention developed to educate undergraduate students about how to communicate in person and over text with friends who experienced the death of someone close to them. College students ( N = 231) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: the CARES intervention, a website containing information about grief and loss, or a control condition. Participants completed pre- and post-test quantitative and qualitative measures to assess (a) knowledge of grief, appropriate responses to grieving peers, and resources available for grieving college students; (b) confidence in ability to communicate effectively with grieving peers; (c) skills in communicating effectively with bereaved friends. The results indicated that students who participated in the CARES intervention had the greatest knowledge regarding grief and appropriate communication with grieving peers when compared with participants in the website and control conditions. They also had higher levels of knowledge about complicated grief when compared with students in the website condition, but not the control condition. In addition, students receiving the CARES intervention were more confident in their ability to help a grieving peer and had the greatest skill in communicating with a hypothetical grieving peer, when compared with participants in the website and control conditions. No differences were found across conditions in knowledge of common signs of grief or knowledge of resources. Overall, the CARES intervention has potential for educating undergraduates about effective communication with their grieving peers.

Abstract. Background: Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and suicide risk is elevated among military veterans. Risk for suicide is inherently transdiagnostic, complex, and multifaceted, which means a comprehensive psychotherapeutic approach to risk mitigation is required. Aims: Our aims were to summarize findings from an evaluation of an interdisciplinary, recovery-oriented intensive outpatient program (IR-IOP) that includes evidence-based suicide prevention stategies for veterans with varying psychiatric diagnoses who are at risk for suicide. Method: Veterans completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation prior to and following their participation in the IR-IOP. Results: A significant decrease in the severity of suicide ideation was found between pre- and posttreatment. Limitations: This program evaluation utilized archival data and, as such, there was not a control group and posttreatment follow-up data were not collected. Conclusion: Preliminary findings suggest an IR-IOP for veterans with heterogenous psychiatric diagnoses utilizing a multifaceted psychotherapeutic approach to suicide prevention may be effective in reducing suicide ideation.

This mixed-method study advances knowledge regarding the practice of grief counseling in a sample of 171 university counseling center therapists. First, several components of therapists’ self-reported work with grieving clients was assessed (e.g., training level, initial responses to a grieving client, principles applied in counseling, therapist comfort, and potential therapist issues related to counseling grieving clients). Second, grounded in the death competence model (Gamino & Ritter, 2012), predictors of perceived grief counseling skills were examined. Cognitive competence and emotional competence predicted perceived grief counseling skills, with training/experience being the most robust predictor. Notably, the participants in this study rarely received education regarding death, dying, and grieving in their graduate programs, and they indicated that their knowledge about grief counseling was insufficient. Moreover, the therapists’ qualitative responses to a case vignette were lacking in many grief-specific domains. Future directions for training, research, and clinical work are discussed.

The purpose of this program evaluation was to investigate the effectiveness of a 10-day, group-based recovery-oriented intensive outpatient program (RIOP) offered at a VA Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Center in South Texas. The RIOP utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to treatment of veterans with acute mental health concerns, bridging cognitive-behavioral processes delivered in group format with other disciplinary approaches (e.g., recreation therapy, Chaplain services). The sample for this program evaluation consisted of 112 veterans who completed the RIOP during a twelve-month period. Ninety veterans (80.4%) had two or more recorded psychiatric diagnoses, and twenty-seven veterans had three or more recorded psychiatric diagnoses (24%). Eighty-five veterans were diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or adjustment disorder (75.9%); seventy-two with major depressive disorder (64.3%); fifty-three (47.3%) with a borderline personality disorder and/or documented clinically significant cluster A or B personality traits; twenty-eight with an anxiety disorder (25%); twenty-one with a bipolar disorder (18.8%); and seven with a psychotic disorder (6.3%). Results indicated a statistically significant decrease in symptoms of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress between pre- and post-treatment. Change in symptoms from baseline to post-treatment was not significantly correlated with age or number of psychiatric diagnoses. The results of the program evaluation suggest that a process-based cognitive-behavioral approach in combination with interventions from other recovery-oriented disciplines (delivered via group modality) can be an effective transdiagnostic treatment for veterans with complex trauma histories who meet criteria for more than one psychiatric diagnosis.

Many college students experience the death of someone close to them and could be at risk for complicated grieving. Their primary sources of support may be unavailable as family members may live far away and their peers may be unprepared to respond to their grief. In addition, college students are exposed to a variety of stressors that could result in maladaptive coping. Furthermore, although most college-aged students use social media, little is known about its impact on grieving. The purpose of this study was to examine the degree to which social support, coping, continuing bonds, and social media use predicted complicated grief and posttraumatic growth in a sample of college students who had experienced an interpersonal loss. Participants (N = 258; 77.5% female, M age = 19.98, SD = 1.41) completed an online survey assessing the aforementioned constructs using Likert-type scales. Findings from two hierarchical regressions indicated that coping variables accounted for the greatest percentage of variance in grieving outcomes with avoidant-emotional coping being the most robust predictor of complicated grief and problem-focused coping accounting for considerable variance in posttraumatic growth (both were associated positively with the outcomes). As hypothesized, continuing bonds explained variance in both grieving outcomes with externalized continuing bonds and maintaining continuing bonds on social media predicting complicated grief and internalized continuing bonds contributing to posttraumatic growth (also all positively associated). Social support from family also was predictive of posttraumatic growth in the positive direction. Future research directions and implications for practice are discussed with the hope that this research might inform the development of interventions to assist college students who are grieving.

End-of-life care is a form of unpaid care work that is primarily the responsibility of women and can affect their career development, employment, finances, and vocational success. This paper provides a review of the literature on the career and economic effects of providing unpaid end-of-life care for women caregivers. Illustrative reflections from women caregivers highlight challenging and positive aspects of providing end-of-life care. Challenges identified by the women caregivers included managing conflicting demands among work, home and caregiving as well as experiencing emotional strain, financial burden and economic instability. In addition, work schedules had to be altered and career trajectories were interrupted. Interestingly, caregivers reported receiving support from their employers and co-workers and few work-related benefits were used. Despite the many challenges in managing work and end-of-life care, many participants felt positively about their ability to provide a caring environment for a loved one at the time of their death. Recommendations for individual, familial, workplace, and societal changes related to unpaid end-of-life care will be provided.

Our purpose in this research was to develop a measure that reflected cross-cultural and cultural-specific expectations of “good mothering.” We based our measure on samples of South Korean mothers ( n = 626) and White mothers in the United States ( n = 612). We developed an initial pool of 74 items that described good mothering in both cultures. We conducted exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses separately for each group. We found different factor structures: the South Korean sample had three factors, the United States’ sample yielded four factors. Two of these factors were similar in meaning across the groups, although the items that loaded onto these factors were not identical. Our analyses also yielded three factors unique to each group. The final instrument comprises 30 items that loaded onto both the shared and unique factors for the two groups. Additional support for the validity and reliability of the scale is presented.

The purpose of the study was to examine the factor structure, measurement invariance, and psychometric properties of a commonly used measure of perceived career barriers (The Perception of Barriers Scale; Luzzo & McWhirter, 2001) with racially diverse college women. The results supported a 9-factor structure for the Perception of Barriers Scale; configural, metric, and scalar invariance for the 9-factors were found with Asian, African American, Latina, and White college women. All groups of women of color reported higher career barriers due to racism and higher educational barriers due to racial discrimination than White women. The results also demonstrated potential differences in salient barriers for women of color (educational barriers due to lack of confidence/skills for Asian women, career barriers due to sexism and racism for African American women, and educational barriers due to financial concerns for Latina women). The reliability estimates of the subscales were satisfactory and support for criterion validity was demonstrated. The results highlighted the importance of measuring and identifying salient barriers for college women of color. Objectives Racial identity invalidation, others' denial of an individual's racial identity, is a salient racial stressor with harmful effects on the mental health and well-being of Multiracial individuals. The purpose of this study was to create a psychometrically sound measure to assess racial identity invalidation for use with Multiracial individuals (N = 497). Method The present sample was mostly female (75%) with a mean age of 26.52 years (SD = 9.60). The most common racial backgrounds represented were Asian/White (33.4%) and Black/White (23.7%). Participants completed several online measures via Qualtrics. Results Exploratory factor analyses revealed 3 racial identity invalidation factors: behavior invalidation, phenotype invalidation, and identity incongruent discrimination. A confirmatory factor analysis provided support for the initial factor structure. Alternative model testing indicated that the bifactor model was superior to the 3-factor model. Thus, a total score and/or 3 subscale scores can be used when administering this instrument. Support was found for the reliability and validity of the total scale and subscales. In line with the minority stress theory, challenges with racial identity mediated relationships between racial identity invalidation and mental health and well-being outcomes. The myriad hours and considerable effort expended by women in unpaid labor at home can have profound effects on their mental, physical, relational, vocational, and economic health. To date, many vocational psychologists have neglected to focus on unpaid work in their research or highlight unpaid work in their theories. Unpaid work in women’s lives is most deserving of increased scholarly attention. Thus, the purposes of this article are to provide an overview of theory and research related to unpaid work, highlight three types of unpaid work, describe the effects of unpaid work on women’s lives, and provide recommendations for future research and practice in vocational psychology to advance understanding regarding unpaid work in women’s lives.

Among Latina/o Americans, the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population, disparities exist in educational and career attainment. The emergence of research on Latina/o students has resulted in varied findings that make it difficult to draw conclusions as to which predictors are most closely associated with goal outcomes for this population. Using meta-analytic techniques, the current study examined the magnitude, direction, and heterogeneity of effect sizes across multiple educational and vocational goal outcomes for Latina/o students (i.e., educational/vocational aspirations, expectations, goals/plans, and persistence). Across 34 independent samples from 33 studies, career-related self-efficacy, peer support, adult support, barriers, and Anglo acculturation had moderate effects on at least one of the outcomes, with career-related self-efficacy and peer support being moderately related to two or more outcomes. If replicated, this research suggests that interventions focused on career-related self-efficacy and peer support could enhance the development of educational and career goals for Latina/o students.

The purpose of this study was to conduct a randomized controlled trial to assess the efficacy of STOP Dating Violence, an online intervention developed to educate students about dating violence and appropriate bystander interventions on college campuses. College students ( N = 317) were randomly assigned to one of the three conditions: (a) the STOP Dating Violence intervention, (b) a website containing information about dating violence, or (c) a control condition. Participants completed pre- and posttest quantitative and qualitative measures to assess knowledge of warning signs and appropriate bystander behaviors, attitudes about intervening as a bystander, willingness to intervene, and self-efficacy regarding intervening. The results indicated that students who participated in the STOP Dating Violence intervention were the most knowledgeable about jealous warning signs of dating violence and appropriate bystander interventions, had the greatest intent to assist a victim of dating violence, and were the most confident in their ability to intervene in dating violence situations, when compared with participants in the website and control conditions. Those who participated in the intervention also demonstrated greater knowledge regarding appropriate bystander behaviors 1 month following the intervention. No differences were found in attitudes regarding helping someone in an abusive dating relationship or engagement in bystander behaviors at follow-up. Qualitative analyses provided further support for the efficacy of STOP Dating Violence in increasing knowledge of barriers to bystander intervention and appropriate bystander intervention strategies in dating violence situations. Overall, the STOP Dating Violence intervention has the potential to educate undergraduates about dating violence and bystander interventions on college campuses.

Mothers of children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder were studied with regard to employment status, workplace characteristics, and depressive symptoms. Self-complexity theory proposes that complex self-representations buffer against depression; however, maternal employment may challenge mothers’ ability to attend to the many needs of their children. Findings from our cross-sectional study of 176 mothers revealed that employed mothers reported fewer depressive symptoms than unemployed mothers and those employed part time, providing support for the self-complexity buffering hypothesis. Furthermore, low levels of parenting stress were associated with fewer depressive symptoms. Implications are provided for career counseling and future research.

This qualitative study examined instances of racial identity invalidation among 49 Black/White Biracial individuals. Transcriptions of participants discussing their most stressful experience of invalidation were coded for themes using content analysis. Themes that emerged provided a rich description of Biracial participants’ perceptions of why invalidation occurs and why perpetrators invalidated the individual. Also addressed are Biracial people’s thoughts, feelings, and reactions in response to the invalidation, and the effect of the invalidating experience on racial identity. Implications for research, counseling and preventive interventions are provided.

The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the Relationship Red Flags Scale, a measure of ability to recognize warning signs of dating violence. The factor structure and psychometric properties of this measure were tested with independent samples of college women and men, and test–retest reliability was assessed with college women. Specifically, our first study examined the factor structure, validity, and reliability of the Relationship Red Flags measure with a sample of 433 undergraduate women. Confirmatory factor analyses provided support for a 25-item five-factor structure (i.e., Monitoring Behaviors, Controlling Behaviors, Demeaning Behaviors, Threatening and Aggressive Behaviors, and Jealous and Possessive Behaviors). Internal consistency reliability was adequate and the validity of the measure was supported for use with college women (negative correlations were found among measures of warning signs and acceptance of dating violence). Our second study replicated these findings with an independent sample of 330 college men. Finally, a third investigation found that the measure demonstrated adequate test–retest reliability with an independent sample of 47 college women.

This study advanced knowledge regarding the mechanisms through which intimate partner violence relates to psychological and financial distress with a sample of diverse low-income women. Data were collected from 147 female domestic violence survivors who were abused by a male partner within the past 6 months. Three hierarchical regression analyses revealed that psychological, physical, and economic abuse were predictive of posttraumatic stress, depression, and economic self-sufficiency among survivors. Guided by the Conservation of Resources Theory, the loss of financial, work, and interpersonal resources also predicted these three outcomes, above and beyond abuse experiences (i.e., economically controlling behaviors, economic sabotage, and interpersonal resource loss were unique predictors). In addition, bootstrap mediation analyses showed that interpersonal resource loss partially mediated the relationship between psychological abuse and mental health outcomes. Together, these findings can be used to inform future interventions to promote the financial and psychological well-being of survivors.

Given the increasing number of women entering the field of psychology, this study investigated the degree to which achievement motivation, leader identity, career salience, and willingness to compromise career for partner and children were predictive of leadership aspirations generally and in the American Psychological Association. Data from 202 female graduate students in counseling and clinical doctoral programs indicated that leader identity, career salience, and willingness to compromise career for children predicted overall leadership aspirations. Achievement motivation, leader identity, and career salience also predicted plans to pursue leadership positions in the American Psychological Association. Graduate students nearing the end of their doctoral programs were more willing to compromise career for children and prioritize their partner than women early in their program. The implications of these findings for research, training, and counseling are discussed.

This study examined how college women’s instrumentality and expectations about combining work and family predicted early career development variables. Specifically, 177 undergraduate women completed measures of instrumentality (i.e., traits such as ambition, assertiveness, and risk taking), willingness to compromise career for family, anticipated work–family conflict, traditionality of career choice, leadership aspirations, and occupational engagement. High levels of instrumentality were associated with strong leadership aspirations and occupational engagement. An inverse relationship emerged between the selection of a more traditional career and less anticipation that work would interfere with time spent with family, and a positive relationship emerged between high leadership aspirations and more anticipation that family would be a strain on work. Additionally, anticipating that work would interfere with time spent with family had a positive relationship with occupational engagement. Findings are discussed, and recommendations for career counseling for young women are provided.

The purpose of this study was to improve an instrument used to assess career aspirations (the Career Aspiration Scale), so the revised measure can be used with confidence in research and practice. Items were added to the existing two scales (educational and leadership aspirations) to enhance reliability. In addition, items assessing a third construct of importance to the operationalization of career aspiration (i.e., achievement aspiration) were developed for inclusion in the revised measure. Three studies to assess the psychometric properties of the Career Aspiration Scale–Revised (CAS-R) were conducted with a total of 583 undergraduate and graduate women. The results of confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the three-factor solution assessing achievement, leadership, and educational aspirations had good model fit. Support also was found for the reliability and validity of the CAS-R when used with undergraduate and graduate women. Suggestions for future research and practice using this measure are provided.

The purposes of this study were to translate the revised version of a measure of career aspirations, the Career Aspiration Scale–Revised (CASR), into Korean and to evaluate the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Korean version of the revised measure. First, the CASR was translated into Korean using multiple translation strategies (Korean version of the Career Aspiration Scale-Revised [K-CASR]). Then, the psychometric properties of the K-CASR were examined with data from 377 college women in Korea. After the removal of several negatively worded items (due to a possible method effect), the 18-item version of the K-CASR demonstrated good model fit with the hypothesized three-factor structure (achievement, leadership, and educational aspirations). The K-CASR also exhibited moderately high internal consistency and stability. Convergent validity was supported by positive correlations with achievement motivation, career orientation, and career goal engagement. Implications for future research and counseling were discussed.

Student learning was assessed in an innovative university–community partnership in which undergraduate students enrolled, first, in a didactic course on intimate partner violence and, subsequently, in a service-learning course where they worked with children living in a shelter for survivors of intimate partner violence. Data were collected at the start and end of the first semester, and at the end of the second semester. Quantitative and qualitative methods indicated that students gained knowledge regarding intimate partner violence, resources available to survivors, and how to respond to a friend in an abusive relationship. The students’ perspectives on how they changed as well as the strengths and limitations of this study are discussed.

The study examined client’s perceptions of working alliance as a mediator and moderator between client expectations of counseling success and counseling outcome. Participants were 284 adult clients in counseling in university or community counseling centers or private practices in South Korea. Level of functioning at the start of counseling was used to control for counseling outcome. Results of structural equation modeling analyses indicated that working alliance fully mediated the relationship between client expectations of counseling success and counseling outcome. In addition, moderation of counseling expectations by working alliance on counseling outcome was supported. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Korean clients who had completed counseling in Korea and viewed the therapy as successful were interviewed about critical secret disclosure during their therapy. In-depth interviews along with grounded theory-informed analyses in a methodological hermeneutic framework revealed that many Korean clients reported that despite initial fears and needing to test their counselors, sharing their secrets was a powerful experience that deepened their connection to their counselor, facilitated positive life changes, and enhanced their relationships with others. We present a hierarchy of categories that explains the meaning and process of critical secret disclosure in therapy. The results are discussed in the context of Korean culture and how these findings can inform therapy with Korean clients.

The current research sought to examine further the integration of career and non-career domains by studying the career problems of 307 help-seekers from three campus agencies (counseling center, academic skills center, career center) at a large eastern university in the United States. Career problems, in turn, were studied in relation to psychodynamic antecedents (i.e., early attachments and self development) and psychological adjustment (i.e., academic, affective, self, interpersonal). Our findings indicated that career problems coexisted with mental health and academic problems for all help-seekers, thereby suggesting the importance of understanding their interrelationships for career theory and interventions. Additionally, attachment processes and problems in the development of the self were related to career difficulties. The implications of these findings for the practice of career counseling are discussed.

The extent to which resources generated at work and positive affect were associated with enrichment in the family domain among 107 dual-earner couples was investigated. Grounded in work-family enrichment theory (Greenhaus & Powell, 2006), this study examined the indirect effect of workplace organizational support on family satisfaction through positive affect at work. Organizational support for work-family management was associated with positive affect at work for both women and men, and positive affect at work was related to family satisfaction for women. One interpersonal effect emerged: women's positive affect at work was associated with family satisfaction for men. Implications for theory, practice, research, and workplace policy are discussed.

While previous research has examined the school-to-work transition of noncollege-bound youth, most have considered how a limited set of variables relate to job attainment at a single point in time. This exploratory study extended beyond the identification of constructs associated with obtaining a job to investigate how several factors, collected longitudinally in adolescence, related to employment stability and job quality with a diverse, nationally representative sample of non-college-bound youth. Logistic regression and structural equation modeling were used to determine the predictors of an adaptive school-to-work transition over time. Depression, substance use, adolescent educational attainment, and employment in adolescence were associated positively with obtaining employment. Adolescent educational attainment and employment in adolescence were associated positively with stability of employment. Depression, adolescent educational attainment, employment in adolescence, and income were positively associated with job quality. Substance use and parental education level were negatively associated with job quality.

This study explored adoption disclosure in a sample of 18 adult adoptees who were adopted as infants. A qualitative analysis of semistructured interviews with adoptees was used to learn about participants’ experiences of adoption disclosure. The majority always knew they were adopted, were able to talk openly with parents about adoption, and had positive feelings related to learning about their adoption. Those who were dissatisfied with their disclosures reported that their parents were uncomfortable with discussing adoption and withheld information. Based on the findings, suggestions are provided for parents and adoption professionals on ways to improve the management of the disclosure process.

This study investigated the role of White racial identity statuses, cultural and racial socialization beliefs, cultural socialization self-efficacy, and racial socialization self-efficacy in predicting White adoptive parents’ (N = 200) cultural and racial socialization behaviors with their Asian adopted children. Only cultural and racial socialization beliefs contributed to the prediction of socialization practices. In addition, we examined whether cultural and racial socialization self-efficacy would moderate the relationship between parents’ cultural socialization and racial socialization beliefs and behaviors; there was no support for cultural or racial socialization self-efficacy as moderators in the beliefs–behaviors relationships. Finally, findings revealed that parents were more involved in cultural socialization than racial socialization behaviors, although they did not engage frequently in either type of socialization behavior, particularly racial socialization.

Married couples consisting of female breadwinners and male primary caretakers are increasing in prevalence and visibility. However, little is known about the experiences of these families, particularly about salient challenges and dynamics related to this work–family arrangement. Through inductive qualitative analysis, the current study investigated the identity and adjustment experiences of this subset of working mothers. Fifty-one women responded to open-ended questions about their work and family experiences. The results highlighted psychological, vocational, and sociocultural phenomena related to this particular work–family arrangement including reasons guiding career and family decisions, positive and negative adjustment experiences, and perceptions of stigma. Relevant clinical and workplace policy implications also are provided.

This study examined the relative contributions of (a) gender, (b) perceived stress, (c) social support from family and significant other, and (d) positive and negative dimensions of religious coping to the prediction of the psychological health and meaning in life among 179 Central American immigrants from El Salvador and Guatemala. Findings reveal that greater perceived stress by Latinas/Latinos was predictive of psychological health and meaning in life, while social support from a significant other also explained variance in meaning in one's life. Negative religious coping, specifically reappraisal of God's powers, was predictive of search for meaning in one's life.

The current study examined existing data to determine whether family SES, age of entry into daycare, time spent in daycare per week, and child personality variables predicted behavioral outcomes. Our analyses indicated that, for this sample, the best predictor of problem behavior was personality. Specifically, individuals low in agreeableness re- ported more problem behavior than did individuals high in agreeableness. Family SES, age of entry into daycare, and amount of time spent in daycare were not significantly related to problem behavior. Although daycare quality was signifi- cantly correlated with problem behavior, it only accounted for 2% of the variance. Such findings indicate that future re- searchers should examine mediating or moderating effects of personality on the relationship between daycare and behav- ior.

Domestic violence survivors encounter numerous barriers and few supports in pursuit of their vocational goals. There is a dearth of research, however, on the vocational supports and barriers salient for survivors. This study aims (a) to assess the psychometric properties of vocational supports and barriers measures with a racially and geographically diverse sample of survivors, (b) to investigate survivors' abuse experiences and perceived supports and barriers, and (c) to examine the relationships among survivors' abuse experiences and supports and barriers. This study was conducted with 227 women survivors residing in five U.S. geographic regions. Results showed strong construct validity for the supports and barriers measures; participants' abuse experiences were associated with current perceptions of vocational barriers but not anticipation of future barriers; racial differences were found among survivors' perceptions of support and the relationship between perceived support, perceived barriers, and abuse experiences. Research and practice implications are provided.

Individual (gender and acculturation), microsystem (social support), exosystem (socioeconomic status), and macrosystem (racism) variables were examined as predictors of career decision-making self-efficacy in a sample of 85 Vietnamese adolescents in the Washington, D.C., area. English language acculturation and peer support accounted for unique variance in the prediction of career decision-making self-efficacy. Implications for career counseling and future research are discussed.

The results of five studies illustrated sound psychometric properties of the CAS when used with adolescent, college, and postcollege samples comprised predominantly of White women. The final eight-item measure demonstrated strong testretest reliability over a 2-week period and evidenced moderate internal consistency. Convergent validity was supported by correlations with measures of career decision self-efficacy, multiple role self-efficacy, occupational self-efficacy, attitudes toward women's roles, instrumentality, and relative importance of career versus family. Discriminant validity was demonstrated through the absence of relations between the CAS total score and measures of attachment to parents. Finally, a two-factor solution consisting of the Leadership and Achievement Aspirations Scale and the Educational Aspirations Scale accounted for substantial variance in career aspiration among samples of mostly White women.

Job stress, perceived social support, coping self-efficacy, and coping strategies were studied as predictors of emotional exhaustion and reduced personal accomplishment among a sample of 123 female shelter workers. Overall, these workers did not meet the collective criteria for burnout as defined by Maslach and Jackson (1986) and perceived social support and coping strategies did not account for unique variance in the prediction of emotional exhaustion and reduced personal accomplishment. Rather, high levels of time pressure and low levels of self-efficacy for being productive at work were identified as predictors of emotional exhaustion. Personal accomplishment was predicted by time pressure and robust levels of self-efficacy for dealing with stressors at work.

One-hundred-and-sixteen Asian American college students viewed analogue videotapes in which an actress portraying a European American female "counselor" expressed cultural values that were either consistent or inconsistent with Asian culture to an actress portraying an Asian American female "client." In addition, the counselor either acknowledged racial differences or did not acknowledge racial differences with the client. The results showed that when the counselor expressed values that were inconsistent with Asian culture, the counselor who acknowledged racial differences was perceived to be more cross-culturally competent than the counselor who did not acknowledge racial differences. Also, the results showed that observer-participants' adherence to the value of conformity to norms was positively associated with their ratings of counselor credibility and crosscultural counseling competence. In this article we advance a distinctly relational view of negotiation. We delineate the conditions through which relational self-construals (RSC) become accessible in negotiations and the conditions that inhibit their use, and we illustrate mechanisms through which RSC affects negotiation processes and outcomes. We introduce four relational dynamics--arelational trading, relational satisficing, relational distancing, and relational integrating--and discuss their consequences for the accumulation of economic and relational capital in negotiation.

Any framework used to conceptualize the career development of women and of racial and ethnic minorities must accommodate multiple influences shaping their experiences concurrently and over time. An ecological model of counseling is proposed to expand conceptualizations and interventions of counseling practice with diverse groups of individuals. Cualquier armazon utilizado para conceptualizar el desarrollo de la carrera de mujeres y de minorias raciales y etnicas debe acomodar multiples influencias que forman sus experiencias concurrentemente y con el tiempo. Un modelo ecologico de aconsejar se propone ensanchar las conceptualizaciones y las intervenciones de aconsejar la practica con grupos diversos de individuos.

The purpose of this study was to examine the contributions of attachment, separation, and Jewish identity to psychological well-being in a sample of 115 late adolescent Jewish women. Results from multiple regression analyses demonstrated that attachment to parents, separation from parents, and Jewish identity collectively accounted for variance in psychological distress, as measured by anxiety, depression, self-esteem problems, and interpersonal problems. Thus, late adolescent Jewish women's psychological functioning may be fostered by therapeutic interventions addressing their relationships with parents and Jewish identity.

Twelve experienced therapists were interviewed about their perceptions of why they used silence in therapy. Qualitative analyses revealed that these therapists typically perceived themselves as using silence to convey empathy, facilitate reflection, challenge the client to take responsibility, facilitate expression of feelings, or take time for themselves to think of what to say. Therapists generally indicated that a sound therapeutic alliance was a prerequisite for using silence, and they typically educated their clients about how they used silence in therapy. Therapists typically believed they did not use silence with clients who were psychotic, highly anxious, or angry. They typically thought they now used silence more flexibly, comfortably, and confidently than when they began doing therapy. Therapists typically believed they learned how to use silence from their own experience as a client and from supervision.

A study of 354 nontraditional college women found robust levels of confidence in their ability to manage the student role and pursue career-related tasks. Findings indicated that perceived career barriers and social support accounted for variance in student and career decision-making self-efficacy for nontraditional college women with and without children. Social support added to the prediction of self-efficacy over and above the contribution of perceived barriers. The discussion focuses on recommendations for career counseling interventions to facilitate educational and vocational success among nontraditional college women.

Contrary to societal stereotypes about adoption, this integrative review of published empirical research on adoptive families noted several positive and few negative out-comes with regard to satisfaction with the adoption, familial functioning, and parent-child communication. The critical analysis of 38 studies on adoptive families revealed a prevalence of descriptive passive research designs with concomitant concerns regarding sampling and generalizability. However, despite their limitations, the studies form the foundation for future research that, if replicated, provide support for viewing most adoptive families as resilient. To contribute to the empirical literature on adoption, counseling psychologists should base research in theory, study societal and cultural factors affecting adoptive families, improve methodology, and focus on resiliency and successful out-comes for adoptive families.

This article presents an overview of the practice of adoption to counseling psychologists to promote clinical understanding of the adoption experience and to stimulate research on adoption. The article includes definitions of adoption terminology, important historical and legal developments for adoption, a summary of adoption statistics, conceptualizations of adoption experience, themes and trends in adoption outcome research related to adoptees and birthparents, and selected theoretical models of adoption. The importance of considering social context variables in adoption practice and research is emphasized.
