Abstract

The magnet system of the Muon to electron (Mu2e) experiment at Fermilab consists of three solenoid magnets: the Production Solenoid (PS), the Transport Solenoid (TS), and the Detector Solenoid (DS). The S-shaped TS contains 52 coils grouped into modules, which are typically 2 coils shrink fitted into Al shells. These modules are further grouped into units made of 1-3 modules. As part of the acceptance process for these units, the magnetic center of all coils and critical dimensions of the Al shells are measured. The magnetic model is updated with these as-built values to ensure the magnetic requirements for the experiment are met. In addition, units are tested to 120% of nominal current at liquid helium temperatures to study quench performance and splice resistance. Results from the first units will be presented.

Abstract

The Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) has measured the muon anomalous precession frequency $\omega_a$ to an uncertainty of 434 parts per billion (ppb), statistical, and 56 ppb, systematic, with data collected in four storage ring configurations during its first physics run in 2018. When combined with a precision measurement of the magnetic field of the experiment's muon storage ring, the precession frequency measurement determines a muon magnetic anomaly of $a_{\mu}({\rm FNAL}) = 116\,592\,040(54) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.46 ppm). This article describes the multiple techniques employed in the reconstruction, analysis and fitting of the data to measure the precession frequency. It also presents the averaging of the results from the eleven separate determinations of \omega_a, and the systematic uncertainties on the result., Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures. Abstract

The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory has measured the anomalous precession frequency $a^{}_\mu = (g^{}_\mu-2)/2$ of the muon to a combined precision of 0.46 parts per million with data collected during its first physics run in 2018. This paper documents the measurement of the magnetic field in the muon storage ring. The magnetic field is monitored by nuclear magnetic resonance systems and calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^\circ$C. The measured field is weighted by the muon distribution resulting in $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$, the denominator in the ratio $\omega^{}_a$/$\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ that together with known fundamental constants yields $a^{}_\mu$. The reported uncertainty on $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ for the Run-1 data set is 114 ppb consisting of uncertainty contributions from frequency extraction, calibration, mapping, tracking, and averaging of 56 ppb, and contributions from fast transient fields of 99 ppb., Comment: Added one citation and corrected missing normalization in Eqs (35) and (36)

Abstract

This paper presents the beam dynamics systematic corrections and their uncertainties for the Run-1 data set of the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment. Two corrections to the measured muon precession frequency $\omega_a^m$ are associated with well-known effects owing to the use of electrostatic quadrupole (ESQ) vertical focusing in the storage ring. An average vertically oriented motional magnetic field is felt by relativistic muons passing transversely through the radial electric field components created by the ESQ system. The correction depends on the stored momentum distribution and the tunes of the ring, which has relatively weak vertical focusing. Vertical betatron motions imply that the muons do not orbit the ring in a plane exactly orthogonal to the vertical magnetic field direction. A correction is necessary to account for an average pitch angle associated with their trajectories. A third small correction is necessary because muons that escape the ring during the storage time are slightly biased in initial spin phase compared to the parent distribution. Finally, because two high-voltage resistors in the ESQ network had longer than designed RC time constants, the vertical and horizontal centroids and envelopes of the stored muon beam drifted slightly, but coherently, during each storage ring fill. This led to the discovery of an important phase-acceptance relationship that requires a correction. Abstract

The muon-to-electron conversion experiment (Mu2e) at Fermilab is designed to explore charged lepton flavor violation. It is composed of three large superconducting solenoids: the production solenoid, the transport solenoid (TS), and the detector solenoid. The TS is formed by two magnets: TS upstream and TS downstream. Each has its own cryostat and power supply. Tolerance sensitivity studies of the position and angular alignment of each coil in this magnet system were performed in the past with the objective to demonstrate that the magnet design meets all the field requirements. The alignment of the cold masses is critical to maximize the transmission of muons and to avoid possible backgrounds that would reduce the sensitivity of the experiment. Each TS magnet cold mass can be individually aligned. In this paper, we discuss the implications of the alignment of the TS cold masses in terms of the displacement of the magnetic center. Consideration of the practical mechanical limits is also presented.

Abstract

The muon-to-electron conversion (Mu2e) experiment at Fermilab will be used to search for the charged lepton flavor-violating conversion of muons to electrons in the field of an atomic nucleus. The Mu2e experiment is currently in the design and construction stage and is expected to begin operations in 2022. The Mu2e experiment uses four large superconducting solenoid magnets including a Production Solenoid (PS), an Upstream and Downstream Transport Solenoid (TSu and TSd) and a Detector Solenoid (DS). This paper will focus on the cryogenic distribution system for these four solenoid magnets. Liquid helium will be supplied from two re-purposed Tevatron satellite refrigerators. A large cryogenic distribution box (DB) is located in the Mu2e building to distribute the required cryogens to each of the four solenoid magnets. Each solenoid magnet will have a dedicated transfer line and cryogenic feed box (FB). The solenoid magnets each require two liquid helium circuits and two liquid nitrogen circuits. The most unique feature about this cryogenic system is that the assemblies for the start of the superconducting portion of the power leads are mounted in feed boxes that are in the range of 23 m to 31 m away from the solenoid magnets. The cryogenic feed boxes are located remotely to provide protection from radiation damage and high magnetic fields. The power leads are NbTi superconducting cable stabilized with high conductivity aluminum. The 6061-T6 aluminum grade was selected for the transfer line piping so that the piping would thermally contract at the same rate as the power lead. A major concern for this transfer line is that a small helium leak could create an electric discharge arc due to the Paschen effect. This paper includes a description of the design features and testing done to ensure that the power leads are protected from the Paschen effect while still being adequately cooled to liquid helium temperatures.

Abstract

The Fermilab Mu2e experiment has been developed to search for evidence of charged lepton flavor violation through the direct conversion of muons into electrons. The transport solenoid is an s-shaped magnet that guides the muons from the source to the stopping target. It consists of 52 superconducting coils arranged in 27 coil modules. A full-size prototype coil module, with all the features of a typical module of the full assembly, was successfully manufactured by a collaboration between INFN-Genoa and Fermilab. The prototype contains two coils that can be powered independently. To validate the design, the magnet went through an extensive test campaign. Warm tests included magnetic measurements with a vibrating stretched wire and electrical and dimensional checks. The cold performance was evaluated by a series of power tests and temperature dependence and minimum quench energy studies.

Abstract

A technology for accelerator-driven subcritical fission in a molten salt core (ADSMS) is being developed as a basis for the destruction of the transuranics in used nuclear fuel. The molten salt fuel is a eutectic mixture of NaCl and the chlorides of the transuranics and fission products. The core is driven by proton beams from a strong-focusing cyclotron stack. This approach uniquely provides an intrinsically safe means to drive a core fueled only with transuranics, thereby eliminating competing breeding terms.

Abstract

We report the development of a conceptual design for accelerator-driven subcritical fission in a molten salt core (ADSMS). ADSMS is capable of destroying all of the transuranics at the same rate and proportion as they are produced in a conventional nuclear power plant. The ADSMS core is fueled solely by transuranics extracted from used nuclear fuel and reduces its radiotoxicity by a factor 10,000. ADSMS offers a way to close the nuclear fuel cycle so that the full energy potential in the fertile fuels uranium and thorium can be recovered.

Abstract

A superconducting strong-focusing cyclotron (SFC) is being developed for high-current applications. It incorporates four innovations. Superconducting quarter-wave cavities are used to provide >20 MV/turn acceleration. The orbit separation is thereby opened so that bunch-bunch interactions between successive orbits are eliminated. Quadrapole focusing channels are incorporated within the sectors so that alternating-gradient strong-focusing transport is maintained throughout. Dipole windings on the inner and outer orbits provide enhanced control for injection and extraction of bunches. Finally each sector magnet is configured as a flux-coupled stack of independent apertures, so that any desired number of independent cyclotrons can be integrated within a common footprint. Preliminary simulations indicate that each SFC should be capable of accelerating 10 mA CW to 800 MeV with very low loss and >50% energy efficiency. A primary motivation for SFC is as a proton driver for accelerator-driven subcritical fission in a molten salt core. The cores are fueled solely with the transuranics from spent nuclear fuel from a conventional nuclear power plant. The beams from one SFC stack would destroy all of the transuranics and long-lived fission products that are produced by a GWe reactor [1]. This capability offers the opportunity to close the nuclear fuel cycle and provide a path to green nuclear energy.

Abstract

Presented is a study of uncompensated magnetization in antiferromagnets performed by SQUID and VSM magnetometry, and polarized neutron reflectometry. This uncompensated magnetization is observed and studied as a function of temperature and cooling conditions. Uncompensated magnetization is found close to the top surface of the antiferromagnet (interface with the ferromagnet) and also in the “bulk” of the antiferromagnetic film. It has been established that this uncompensated magnetization plays crucial role in exchange bias. To understand the origin of uncompensated magnetization, ab initio calculations are performed.
