Herein, we present a dark-green crystalline tetranuclear Cu(II) Schiff base complex {C1 = [Cu4L4](ClO4)4(DMF)4(H2O)} using a N,N,O donor ligand (HL), namely 2-(((2-hydroxypropyl)imino)methyl)-6-methoxyphenol. Spectro-photometrical investigation on the β-lactamase-like activity of this coordinately saturated system revealed its catalytic inefficiency towards hydrolysis of nitrocefin as a model substrate. This complex has attracted significant interest as a promising photo-catalyst owing to its narrow band gap (2.40 eV) as predicted from DFT calculations and its higher responsivity towards UV light. Therefore, C1 is effectively involved in the photocatalytic reduction of perchlorate to Cl− in the presence of a hole scavenger (H2O–MeOH) under prolonged UV irradiation and itself becomes photo-cleaved to yield a new dark-brown colored chlorobridged dinuclear crystalline complex C2 {[CuL(H2O)2Cl3]H2O}. Furthermore, C2 was deployed as a functional β-lactamase model and was found to show a remarkable catalytic proficiency towards the hydrolysis of nitrocefin in 70 : 30 (V/V) MeOH–H2O medium. This pro-catalyst C2 has been speculated to generate an aqua bridged active catalyst that plays a crucial factor in hydrolysis. This phenomenon was again experimentally established by potentiometric pH titration where C2 displays only one pKa value (7.11) in the basic pH range, indicating the deprotonation of the bridged water molecule. Based on several other kinetic studies, it may be postulated that the hydrolysis of nitrocefin is initiated by the nucleophilic attack of a bridging hydroxide, followed by very fast protonation of the intermediate to furnish the hydrolyzed product. It is noteworthy that the rate of nitrocefin hydrolysis is greatly inhibited in the presence of external chloride concentration. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the photochemical behavior of such a tetranuclear copper(II) Schiff base complex. Hydrogen obtained from renewable sources such as water and alcohols is regarded as an efficient clean-burning alternative to non-renewable fuels. The use of the so-called bio-H2 regardless of its colour will be a significant step towards achieving global net-zero carbon goals. Challenges still persist however with conventional H2 storage, which include low-storage density and high cost of transportation apart from safety concerns. Global efforts have thus focussed on liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs), which have shown excellent potential for H2 storage while allowing safer large-scale transformation and easy on-site H2 generation. While water could be considered as the most convenient liquid inorganic hydrogen carrier (LIHC) on a long-term basis, the utilization of alcohols as LOHCs to generate on-demand H2 has tasted instant success. This has helped to draw a road-map of futuristic H2 storage and transportation. The current review brings to the fore the state-of-the-art developments in hydrogen generation from readily available, feed-agnostic bio-alcohols as LOHCs using molecular transition-metal catalysts. During the past few decades, the synthesis of coordination complexes that exhibit high catalytic efficiencies has received significant attention from bio-inorganic chemists. In this context, two trinuclear mixed-valence manganese complexes, namely [MnIII2MnII(L1)2(OAc)4(H2O)2]·5H2O (1) and [MnIII2MnII(L2)2(OAc)4(CH3OH)2]·3CH3OH (2) [OAc = acetate] have been synthesized and structurally characterized. These complexes are shown to retain their nuclearity in acetonitrile medium, unveiling a new area of catecholase-like activity. In fact, both complexes showed an efficient oxidizing activity in acetonitrile using 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (3,5-DTBC) as the model substrate, and they were able to bring about complete oxidation of the substrate at a catalyst-to-substrate ratio of up to 1 : 600. To the best of our knowledge, the catecholase-like activity of trinuclear species is explored here for the first time. Interestingly, pseudo-zero-order kinetics with respect to the substrate are identified for both complexes, which represents the second report of this type of activity and the first report observed for a mixed-valence manganese complex. Details from experimental investigations of the mechanistic pathway revealed that the formation of oxygen radicals is believed to be the rate-limiting step, which supports the observation of the pseudo-zeroth-order kinetics. Two architecturally dissimilar coordination complexes, namely, C1 = [CuL1(NO2)]2 and C2 = [CuL2(NO3)] (L1 = (4‐bromo‐2‐[(2‐isobutylaminoethylimino)methyl]phenolate and L2 = (4‐bromo‐2‐[(2‐propylaminoethylimino)methyl]phenolate) have been synthesized from two different organic ligand backbones. The synthesized complexes have been identified using some common techniques like elemental analysis, FT‐IR spectroscopy, and single‐crystal X‐ray analysis. The X‐ray structural analysis revealed that C1 is a dinuclear complex realized through one bridging nitrite anion, whereas for C2, nitrate anions bridge the complexes to accomplish a 1D coordination polymer. C1 and C2 when slashed down by rapid and green mechanical method by using a simple hand grinding technique, mortar and pestle, resulted in NC1 and NC2 nanoparticles, whose average size was characterized by PXRD, SEM, and DLS. As far as we know, this is the first report where the nano‐formulation has been used while maintaining the structural integrity of the Schiff base complex. The proliferative properties of these complexes have been assessed in vitro using human lung carcinoma cell line A549. Being a polymer, the number of metal centers in NC2 is much higher; accordingly, this complex is more vital in terms of biological activity in comparison with NC1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three new mononuclear copper Schiff base complexes, namely, ([Cu(L1)Cl].CH3CN (HmC_1), [Cu(L2)Cl].CH3CN (HmC_2) and [Cu(L3)Cl].CH3CN (HmC_3) derived from ONO donor tridentate ligands HL1, HL2 and HL3, respectively, have been synthesized to check their efficacy as target‐specific next‐generation anticancer therapeutics. All the HmCs have been characterized by using various physicochemical techniques (i.e., single‐crystal X‐ray analysis, Fourier transform infrared [FT‐IR] spectroscopy and elemental analysis). Among the synthesized Schiff base complexes, HmC_3 was turned out to be most effective in killing cancer cell carried out on cultured human breast cancer cell line (MDA‐MB‐231) and human lung carcinoma cell line (A549). Finally, in order to improve the cellular permeability, particle size of HmC_3 was scaling down to nano‐regime by immobilizing it onto a suitable matrix MCM‐41@APTES (MCM‐41 = Mobil Composition of Matter No. 41 and APTES = 3‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane) to generate MCM‐41@APTES@HmC_3 (MCM‐41@APTES@HmC_3 = HtC_3). Field‐emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) study revealed the particle size of the synthesized HtC_3 nano‐composite was within nano‐regime and therefore could be further effective for biomedical applications. Furthermore, HtC_3 displayed better cancer cell killing property. To get insight into the mechanism of action of HtC_3, Annexin V‐FITC/PI analysis and TUNEL assay revealed that DNA damage phenomenon is accompanied with changes in cellular morphology leading to cell apoptosis. Cell migration assay on MDA‐MB‐231 cell with HtC_3 exposed the effectiveness of HtC_3 in arresting cancer cell migration. Therefore, all the in‐vitro studies demonstrated that the immobilization of the copper Schiff base complex onto a suitable matrix increased its efficiency and becomes a promising anticancer nano‐therapeutic agent. Three asymmetric tridentate acyl hydrazone Schiff base ligands namely L1, L2 and L3 were prepared via condensation of 4-methoxybenzohydrazide with picolinaldehyde, 1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethanone and phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methanone respectively. Three bio-relevant mononuclear zinc(II) complexes [Zn(L1)Cl2]·2H2O (1), [Zn(L2)Cl2] (2) and [Zn(L3)Cl2] (3) were synthesized by treatment of zinc(II) chloride with the corresponding Schiff base ligands and characterised by the usual physicochemical techniques. The solid state structures of complexes 1 and 3 were evaluated by single crystal X-ray analysis. All complexes were able to hydrolyse the P–O bond of the phosphate monoester in 90% (v/v) DMSO–water medium using 4-nitrophenylphosphate (4-NPP) as the model substrate and the trend in their activity is 1 ≈ 2 > 3. On considering the highly efficient hydrolysis properties, complexes 1–3 were tested as potential therapeutic agents for cancer using HCT116 (human colorectal carcinoma), HepG2 (human hepatocellular carcinoma) and A549 (human non-small lung carcinoma) cells. Complex 2 showed the highest IC50 values for anti-cancer activity towards all three cell lines among the three complexes and complex 3 showed the least activity as observed in the phosphatase activity study. The internucleosomal degradation of DNA during apoptosis can be detected by cell death detection ELISA. DNA fragmentation that leads to cell death was examined and when induced by complex 2 in HepG2 cells a significant level of DNA fragmentation was observed at regular intervals of time. A lucrative SrFe2O4 Spinel Nanoflowers has been exploited as heterogeneous water splitting electrocatalyst having possible real-life application as renewable energy resources. [Display omitted] • The protocol for catalyst synthesis is simple, economical and green. • Apart from characterizing in detail, several other systematic information regarding crystallography parameters of SrFe2O4 through Rietveld refinement have been provided in the manuscript. • A methodical study on the electrocatalytic water oxidation activity of SrFe2O4 Spinel nano-flowers revealed that its highly active nature having overpotential 370 mV in 0.1 M KOH and 312 in 1 M KOH at 10 mA cm−2 as compared to that of commercially available Fe3O4 (overpotential 522 mV at 10 mA cm−2, 1 M KOH). The presence of spinal nature, rod-like morphology, and strontium metal ions are one of the reasons for the high activity of the material. • Spectroscopic and electrochemical data, along with scanning electron microscopic images and Cyclic Voltammogram studies indicate that the catalyst is stable and retain its structure during electrolysis. • A comparison of our synthesized catalyst with analogous other catalysts has been provided to highlight on the superior nature of our catalysts. Devising efficient and highly active electrocatalysts for water oxidation is an interesting issue and constructing catalysts that could execute smoothly the kinetically sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is great challenge. In this study, we have reported the preparation of SrFe 2 O 4 nanoflowers (NFs) which have proved to be quite fruitful for the purpose of water oxidation reaction. SrFe 2 O 4 NFs have been characterized via SEM, TEM, PXRD, FTIR, TGA and XPS. Crystallographic information of the material is obtained through Rietveld refinement and is provided in this work. The electrochemical studies were executed in two different basic mediums and in both cases unprecedented results have been gained as is reflected in the fact that SrFe 2 O 4 NFs in 1 M aqueous KOH solution displayed a very low overpotential of 312 mV whereas in 0.1 M aqueous KOH solution the overpotential was 370 mV at 10 mAcm−2 current density. The capability of spinel SrFe 2 O 4 NFs to effectively oxidize water is reflected in its appreciable turnover number (4.8×105, in 1 M KOH) and extraordinary turn frequencies (11.11 s−1, in 1 M KOH). Additionally, the synthetic technique of SrFe 2 O 4 NFs is very simple, green and economical. • Carboxylato bridging hydroxo-Cu(II) coordination polymer is structurally characterized. • Antiferromagnetic coupling is established in the hydroxo and acetato bridged polymer. • Hand griding of the coordination polymer generates nano material (100 nm) that is established by SEM and PXRD data. • Nano material is used as catalyst for reduction of nitroaromatics by BH 4 −. • Reusability is examined of this nano dispersed coordination polymer catalyst. The 1D coordination polymer, [Cu 2 (μ 2 OH) 2 (DABA) 2 ] n (1), (HDABA = 4-Diallylamino-benzoic acid) is characterized by Single crystal X-Ray diffraction analysis. The structure switches to a 2D geometry by hydrogen bonding interactions. Hand grinding aqueous suspension of the coordination polymer, 1 , present in nano regime of av. 100 nm dimension and shows catalytic performance in the reduction of toxic nitrophenols to corresponding aminophenols by NaBH 4. The rate constant values (κ app) are 2.4 × 10−3 (4-NP), 5.3 × 10−3 (2,4-DNP) and 5.6 × 10−3 (2,4,6-TNP) s −1 are much higher than reduction by only NaBH 4. The susceptibility measurements (χ M T) of Cu(II) coordination polymer indicates the presence of a very weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the metal centres. The hand grinding technique and reusability of 1 makes the approach chemically green, cost effective and attracts the attention towards the real-life application. A cost-effective hand grinding green approach has been adopted to prepare nano material of carboxylato Cu(II) coordination polymer that serves as an excellent catalyst to reduce nitro aromatics to aminophenols by NaBH 4.
