We show that finitely generated torsion groups of subexponential growth must have a global fixed point whenever they act by isometry on a finite dimensional complete CAT(0)-space. The same statement for simple groups of subexponential growth is also shown. Let $G$ be an infinite, edge- and vertex-weighted graph with certain reasonable restrictions. We construct the heat kernel of the associated Laplacian using an adaptation of the parametrix approach due to Minakshisundaram-Pleijel in the setting of Riemannian geometry. This is partly motivated by the wish to relate the heat kernels of a graph and a subgraph, or of a domain and a discretization of it. As an application, assuming that the graph is locally finite, we express the heat kernel $H_G(x,y;t)$ as a Taylor series with the lead term being $a(x,y)t^r$, where $r$ is the combinatorial distance between $x$ and $y$ and $a(x,y)$ depends (explicitly) upon edge and vertex weights. In the case $G$ is the regular $(q+1)$-tree with $q\geq 1$, our construction reproves different explicit formulas due to Chung-Yau and to Chinta-Jorgenson-Karlsson. Assuming uniform boundedness of the combinatorial vertex degree, we show that a dilated Gaussian depending on any distance metric on $G$, which is uniformly bounded from below can be taken as a parametrix in our construction. This work concerns the design of perfectly conducting objects that are invisible to an incident transverse magnetic plane wave. The object in question is a finite planar waveguide with a finite periodic array of barriers. By optimizing this array, the amplitude of the scattered field is reduced to less than $10^{-9}$ times the amplitude of the incident plane wave everywhere outside the waveguide. To accurately evaluate such minute amplitudes, we employ a recently developed boundary integral equation technique, adapted for objects whose boundaries have endpoints, corners, and branch points., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures

In this paper we develop the parametrix approach for constructing the heat kernel on a graph $G$. In particular, we highlight two specific cases. First, we consider the case when $G$ is embedded in a Eulidean domain or manifold $\Omega$, and we use a heat kernel associated to $\Omega$ to obtain a formula for the heat kernel on $G$. Second, we consider when $G$ is a subgraph of a larger graph $\widetilde{G}$, and we obtain a formula for the heat kernel on $G$ from the heat kernel on $\widetilde{G}$ restricted to $G$., Comment: 24 pages

Let $X_m$ denote the discrete circle with $m$ vertices. For $x,y\in X_{m}$ and complex $s$, let $G_{X_m,\chi_{\beta}}(x,y;s)$ be the resolvent kernel associated to the combinatorial Laplacian which acts on the space of functions on $X_{m}$ that are twisted by a character $\chi_{\beta}$. We will compute $G_{X_m,\chi_{\beta}}(x,y;s)$ in two different ways. First, using the spectral expansion of the Laplacian, we show that $G_{X_m,\chi_{\beta}}(x,y;s)$ is a generating function for certain trigonometric sums involving powers of the cosecant function; by choosing $\beta$ or $s$ appropriately, the sums in question involve powers of the secant function. Second, by viewing $X_{m}$ as a quotient space of $\mathbb{Z}$, we prove that $G_{X_m,\chi_{\beta}}(x,y;s)$ is a rational function which is given in terms of Chebyshev polynomials. From the existence and uniqueness of $G_{X_m,\chi_{\beta}}(x,y;s)$, these two evaluations are equal. From the resulting identity, we obtain a means by which one can obtain explicit evaluations of cosecant and secant sums. The identities we prove depend on a number of parameters, and when we specialize the values of these parameters we obtain several previously known formulas. Going further, we derive a recursion formula for special values of the $L$-functions associated to the cycle graph $X_{m}$, thus answering a question from arXiv:2212.13687v1., Comment: 26 pages

This text reviews certain notions in metric geometry that may have further applications to problems in complex geometry and holomorphic dynamics in several variables. We study the interplay between the backward dynamics of a non-expanding self-map $f$ of a proper geodesic Gromov hyperbolic metric space $X$ and the boundary regular fixed points of $f$ in the Gromov boundary. To do so, we introduce the notion of stable dilation at a boundary regular fixed point of the Gromov boundary, whose value is related to the dynamical behaviour of the fixed point. This theory applies in particular to holomorphic self-maps of bounded domains $\Omega\subset\subset \mathbb{C}^q$, where $\Omega$ is either strongly pseudoconvex, convex finite type, or pseudoconvex finite type with $q=2$, and solves several open problems from the literature. We extend results of holomorphic self-maps of the disc $\mathbb{D}\subset \mathbb{C}$ obtained by Bracci and Poggi-Corradini. In particular, with our geometric approach we are able to answer a question, open even for the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^q\subset \mathbb{C}^q$, namely that for holomorphic parabolic self-maps any escaping backward orbit with bounded step always converges to a point in the boundary.

The volume of the unit sphere in every dimension is given a new interpretation as a product of special values of the zeta function of $\mathbb{Z}$, akin to volume formulas of Minkowski and Siegel in the theory of arithmetic groups. A product formula is found for this zeta function that specializes to Catalan numbers. Moreover, certain closed-form expressions for various other zeta values are deduced, in particular leading to an alternative perspective on Euler's values of the Riemann zeta function., Comment: 9 pages, no figures

A general fixed point theorem for isometries in terms of metric functionals is proved under the assumption of the existence of a conical bicombing. It is new even for isometries of Banach spaces as well as for non-locally compact CAT(0)-spaces and injective spaces. Examples of actions on non-proper CAT(0)-spaces come from the study of diffeomorphism groups, birational transformations, and compact K\"ahler manifolds. A special case of the fixed point theorem provides a novel mean ergodic theorem that in the Hilbert space case implies von Neumann's theorem. The theorem accommodates classically fixed-point-free isometric maps such as those of Kakutani, Edelstein, Alspach and Prus. Moreover, from the main theorem together with some geometric arguments of independent interest, one can deduce that every bounded invertible operator of a Hilbert space admits a nontrivial invariant metric functional on the space of positive operators. This is a result in the direction of the invariant subspace problem although its full meaning is dependent on a future determination of such metric functionals., Comment: 22 pages

An integral equation reformulation of the Maxwell transmission problem is presented. The reformulation uses techniques such as tuning of free parameters and augmentation of close-to-rank-deficient operators. It is designed for the eddy current regime and works both for surfaces of genus $0$ and $1$. Well-conditioned systems and field representations are obtained despite the Maxwell transmission problem being ill-conditioned for genus $1$ surfaces due to the presence of Neumann eigenfields. Furthermore, it is shown that these eigenfields, for ordinary conductors in the eddy current regime, are different from the classical Neumann eigenfields for superconductors. Numerical examples, based on the reformulation, give an unprecedented $13$-digit accuracy both for transmitted and scattered fields., Comment: Accepted for publication in Computers and Mathematics with Applications

We consider dynamical and geometrical aspects of deep learning. For many standard choices of layer maps we display semi-invariant metrics which quantify differences between data or decision functions. This allows us, when considering random layer maps and using non-commutative ergodic theorems, to deduce that certain limits exist when letting the number of layers tend to infinity. We also examine the random initialization of standard networks where we observe a surprising cut-off phenomenon in terms of the number of layers, the depth of the network. This could be a relevant parameter when choosing an appropriate number of layers for a given learning task, or for selecting a good initialization procedure. More generally, we hope that the notions and results in this paper can provide a framework, in particular a geometric one, for a part of the theoretical understanding of deep neural networks.

This note discusses some aspects of the asymptotic behaviour of nonexpansive maps. Using metric functionals, we make a connection to the invariant subspace problem and prove a new result for nonexpansive maps of $\ell^{1}$. Two recently derived integral equations for the Maxwell transmission problem are compared through numerical tests on simply connected axially symmetric domains for non-magnetic materials. The winning integral equation turns out to be entirely free from false eigenwavenumbers for any passive materials, also for purely negative permittivity ratios and in the static limit, as well as free from false essential spectrum on non-smooth surfaces. It also appears to be numerically competitive to all other available integral equation reformulations of the Maxwell transmission problem, despite using eight scalar surface densities., Comment: 36 pages, 10 figures

We define a graph structure associated in a natural way to finite fields that nevertheless distinguishes between different models of isomorphic fields.

It is observed that a natural analog of the Hahn-Banach theorem is valid for metric functionals but fails for horofunctions. Several statements of the existence of invariant metric functionals for individual isometries and 1-Lipschitz maps are proved. Various other definitions, examples and facts are pointed out related to this topic. A boundary integral equation formulation is presented for the electromagnetic transmission problem where an incident electromagnetic wave is scattered from a bounded dielectric object. The formulation provides unique solutions for all combinations of wavenumbers in the closed upper half-plane for which Maxwell's equations have a unique solution. This includes the challenging combination of a real positive wavenumber in the outer region and an imaginary wavenumber inside the object. The formulation, or variants thereof, is particularly suitable for numerical field evaluations as confirmed by examples involving both smooth and non-smooth objects., Comment: 32 pages, 7 figures

This paper discusses the simplest examples of spectral zeta functions, especially those associated with graphs, a subject which has not been much studied. The analogy and the similar structure of these functions, such as their parallel definition in terms of the heat kernel and their functional equations, are emphasized. Another theme is to point out various contexts in which these non-classical zeta functions appear. This includes Eisenstein series, the Langlands program, Verlinde formulas, Riemann hypotheses, Catalan numbers, Dedekind sums, and hypergeometric functions. This paper discusses a general method for spectral type theorems using metric spaces instead of vector spaces. Advantages of this approach are that it applies to genuinely non-linear situations and also to random versions. An integral equation-based numerical method for scattering from multi-dielectric cylinders is presented. Electromagnetic fields are represented via layer potentials in terms of surface densities with physical interpretations. The existence of null-field representations then adds superior flexibility to the modeling. Local representations are used for fast field evaluation at points away from their sources. Partially global representations, constructed as to reduce the strength of kernel singularities, are used for near-evaluations. A mix of local- and partially global representations is also used to derive the system of integral equations from which the physical densities are solved. Unique solvability is proven for the special case of scattering from a homogeneous cylinder under rather general conditions. A particular mix of integral equations and discretization techniques is suggested for the solution of a planar Helmholtz transmission problem with relevance to the study of surface plasmon waves. The transmission problem describes the scattering of a time harmonic transverse magnetic wave from an infinite dielectric cylinder with complex permittivity and sharp edges. A high-order convergent and robust numerical solver is constructed and used to find complex eigenwavenumbers and electromagnetic eigenfields of dielectric objects with axial symmetry. The solver is based on Fourier--Nystr\"om discretization of combined integral equations for the transmission problem and can be applied to demanding resonance problems at microwave, terahertz, and optical wavelengths. A result for subadditive ergodic cocycles is proved that provides more delicate information than Kingman's subadditive ergodic theorem. As an application we deduce a multiplicative ergodic theorem generalizing an earlier result of Karlsson-Ledrappier, showing that the growth of a random product of semi-contractions is always directed by some horofunction. We initiate the study of spectral zeta functions $\zeta_{X}$ for finite and infinite graphs $X$, instead of the Ihara zeta function, with a perspective towards zeta functions from number theory and connections to hypergeometric functions. The Riemann hypothesis is shown to be equivalent to an approximate functional equation of graph zeta functions. The latter holds at all points where Riemann's zeta function $\zeta(s)$ is non-zero. This connection arises via a detailed study of the asymptotics of the spectral zeta functions of finite torus graphs in the critcal strip and estimates on the real part of the logarithmic derivative of $\zeta(s)$. We relate $\zeta_{\mathbb{Z}}$ to Euler's beta integral and show how to complete it giving the functional equation $\xi_{\mathbb{Z}}(1-s)=\xi_{\mathbb{Z}}(s)$. This function appears in the theory of Eisenstein series although presumably with this spectral intepretation unrecognized. In higher dimensions $d$ we provide a meromorphic continuation of $\zeta_{\mathbb{Z}^{d}}(s)$ to the whole plane and identify the poles. From our aymptotics several known special values of $\zeta(s)$ are derived as well as its non-vanishing on the line $Re(s)=1$. We determine the spectral zeta functions of regular trees and show it to be equal to a specialization of Appell's hypergeometric function $F_{1}$ via an Euler-type integral formula due to Picard., Comment: 25 pages, no figures
