1. Calcification trends in long-lived corals across the Indo-Pacific during the industrial era

Abstract

Abstract Skeletal cores from massive, long-lived coral colonies provide a unique approach to investigating the chronic effects of climate change on coral calcification across decadal to centennial timescales. Here, we show an overall decline in calcification rates during the industrial era, broadly consistent with other studies, based on 148 skeletal cores from ten reef locations throughout the Indo-Pacific. However, these declines are region-specific, modulated by the opposing influences of density and linear extension (the product of which equals calcification), and superimposed on multi-decadal oscillations. The main drivers of declines in calcification were recent marine heatwaves that induced reductions in linear extension, rather than decreasing skeletal density. Our findings contrast with some regional studies that show growth declines beginning only in recent decades, which in some cases may be the most recent troughs of multi-decadal oscillations in calcification.

2. Objective and subjective scar aesthetics with topical Manuka honey post-thyroidectomy: A randomized control study

Abstract

Objective: Leptospermum Honey (Manuka honey) has proven to be effective in improving acute and chronic wound healing presumably due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim is to determine if Manuka honey decreases scar formation and results in a cosmetically appealing scar. Methods: A prospective single-blinded randomized control trial was performed. All patients received an 8 cm incision. Patients randomized to honey treatment were instructed to apply Manuka honey paste topically to the incision site once per day post surgery for 4 weeks. The patients' scar was then analyzed objectively by a blinded observer and subjectively at 4 and 8 weeks postoperatively. The primary outcome measure used was the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS). Results: A total of 21 patients completed the entire scar analysis (honey treatment = 9, standard treatment = 12). There was no statistically significant difference between patient scar assessment scale and observer scar assessment scale at 4 and 8 weeks postoperatively. Conclusion: Despite Leptospermum Honey's reported anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, this study did not show a difference in scar appearance when applied. Abstract

Comparative studies of mortality in the wild are necessary to understand the evolution of aging; yet, ectothermic tetrapods are underrepresented in this comparative landscape, despite their suitability for testing evolutionary hypotheses. We present a study of aging rates and longevity across wild tetrapod ectotherms, using data from 107 populations (77 species) of nonavian reptiles and amphibians. We test hypotheses of how thermoregulatory mode, environmental temperature, protective phenotypes, and pace of life history contribute to demographic aging. Controlling for phylogeny and body size, ectotherms display a higher diversity of aging rates compared with endotherms and include phylogenetically widespread evidence of negligible aging. Protective phenotypes and life-history strategies further explain macroevolutionary patterns of aging. Analyzing ectothermic tetrapods in a comparative context enhances our understanding of the evolution of aging.

Abstract

Sex-related differences in mortality are widespread in the animal kingdom. Although studies have shown that sex determinationsystems might drive lifespan evolution, sex chromosome influence on aging rates have not been investigated so far, likely due toan apparent lack of demographic data from clades including both XY (with heterogametic males) and ZW (heterogametic females)systems. Taking advantage of a unique collection of capture–recapture datasets in amphibians, a vertebrate group where XY andZW systems have repeatedly evolved over the past 200 million years, we examined whether sex heterogamy can predict sexdifferences in aging rates and lifespans. We showed that the strength and direction of sex differences in aging rates (and notlifespan) differ between XY and ZW systems. Sex-specific variation in aging rates was moderate within each system, but agingrates tended to be consistently higher in the heterogametic sex. This led to small but detectable effects of sex chromosome systemon sex differences in aging rates in our models. Although preliminary, our results suggest that exposed recessive deleteriousmutations on the X/Z chromosome (the “unguarded X/Z effect”) or repeat-rich Y/W chromosome (the “toxic Y/W effect”) couldaccelerate aging in the heterogametic sex in some vertebrate clades., C was supported asa postdoctoral researcher by the Vanier-Banting postdoctoral fellowship program and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF grant number 31003A_182265).

6. A Transitional Care Model for Veterans With Complex Needs During COVID: The Behavioral Recovery Outreach (BRO) Team

Abstract

The Veterans Health Administration’s Care for Patients with Complex Problems (CP)2 Program developed a national infrastructure to disseminate promising practice models to improve care for Veterans with complex medical, mental health, and/or neurocognitive conditions, who may also have behaviors disruptive to care. A strategic priority is improving safe and effective transitions to community care for Veterans with complex care needs, many of whom have historically been limited to VA settings as a result of behavioral concerns. The Behavioral Recovery Outreach (BRO) Team was the first model identified for national dissemination and evaluation at partner sites. Developed at VA Central Iowa, BRO is an interdisciplinary team model that identifies Veterans in long-term VA care settings with complex care needs to engage in individualized behavioral programing to manage/stabilize behaviors and safely transition them to more appropriate and less costly community settings. This symposium will describe the BRO team model, highlight the facilitators and barriers to nationally disseminating the BRO model with VA partner facilities, discuss adaptations in continuing community transitions following the COVID-19 pandemic, and describe program outcomes. The first speaker will discuss development of the BRO model and outcomes of a regional dissemination. The second speaker will present results from the program evaluation of the national dissemination. The final speaker will describe BRO Team expansion and lessons learned from the perspective of a VA partner facility. The (CP)2 Program Director will integrate findings and highlight implications for scaling and evaluating promising models for national dissemination for policy, practice, and future research.

We present evaluation results after one year of implementation by nine BRO Teams. Monthly checklists documented consistent composition across teams: a psychologist, social worker and nurse. Social workers were recognized as having a critical role in implementation, serving as a referral source and liaison between the CLC, Veteran/family, and community facility. Early implementation focused on team and program development with barriers including unprotected time for Team members. In the first year, the nine teams enrolled 70 Veterans, discharging 86% to community facilities. Characteristics of the Veterans suggest Teams are reaching the complex Veteran targeted by the model. Barriers to successful discharge include community facility inexperience/training and confidence to manage complex residents. COVID emerged as the leading barrier to outreach to internal and external partners and providing transitional support to the Veteran after discharge. We discuss the impact of these preliminary findings on future implementation and dissemination of the model.

Abstract

Objectives. We examined the effect of a state law in Colorado that required local public health agencies to deliver a minimum package of public health services. Methods. We used a longitudinal, pre–post study design, with baseline data collected in 2011 and follow-up data collected in 2013. We conducted means testing to analyze the change in service delivery and activities. We conducted linear regression to test for system structure effects on the implementation of core services. Results. We observed statistically significant increases in several service areas within communicable disease, prevention and population health promotion, and environmental health. In addition to service and program areas, specific activities had significant increases. The significant activity increases were all in population- and systems-based services. Conclusions. This project provided insight into the likely effect of national adoption of a minimum package as recommended by the Institute of Medicine. The implementation of a minimum package showed significant changes in service delivery, with specific service delivery measurement over a short period of time. Our research sets up a research framework to further explore core service delivery measure development.

Abstract

Diarrhea-related dehydration is a leading cause of childhood death in developing countries such as Indonesia, despite being largely preventable and treatable through use of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS). While the extent to which ORS is used in Indonesia has been explored in earlier studies, the issue of whether it is being used correctly has not been adequately investigated. The purpose of this study was to assess mothers' ORS preparation and administration practices and to determine their source of instruction for these practices. A structured questionnaire was administered orally to 100 mothers of children under the age of 5 years, in a rural village of West Java, Indonesia. Only 23.7% of mothers were found to have correctly prepared ORS, and none exhibited fully correct administration practices. Primary sources of instruction were health workers (62.9%), package instructions (23.7%), and family members or friends (12.4%). Resulting recommendations include education of health care workers, community health education programs, reallocation of health care resources, and revision of ORS packaging guidelines.

Abstract

Segregation distorter (SD) chromosomes in Drosophila melanogaster are naturally occurring second chromosomes which produce greatly altered transmission frequencies when present in heterozygous males (Hartl and Hiraizumi 1976). The proximate cause of segregation distortion is abortion of spermatids carrying the non-SD homologue (Tokuyasu et al. 1977). SD-72, a chromosome previously shown (Mange 1968) to be unaffected by high temperature treatment of spermatocytes, a stage when several SD genotypes are temperature sensitive, has a temperature-sensitive period during spermiogenesis. SD-72/cn bw males exposed to a 24-h pulse of 29 °C, then brooded for 24 h, experience a decrease in segregation distortion of approximately two-thirds. The timing of the reduction in distortion indicates that the temperature-sensitive period is postmeiotic.
