Abstract

We numerically study the stability and morphology of geometrically confined skyrmions in nanodots using Finsler geometry (FG) modeling technique. The FG model dynamically implements anisotropies in ferromagnetic interaction, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and magneto-elastic coupling in response to mechanical stresses. Without the stresses, there exists a geometrically confined effect originating from the surface effect of small nanodots, in which skyrmions are stabilized under a low external magnetic field. This surface effect is enhanced by radial stresses, which significantly reduce the surface DMI compared to the bulk DMI. The radial stresses also alter the interactions to be anisotropic. Owing to these position- and direction-dependent interactions, incomplete skyrmions emerge at the center of the nanodots under the tensile stress. In addition to the incomplete skyrmions, target skyrmions are observed under the compressive stress. Our numerical results indicate that the strain-enhanced surface effect and the strain-induced interaction anisotropies suitably explain the skyrmion stability in nanodots with zero magnetic field., Comment: 38 page, 14 figures

Abstract

In this paper, we numerically study Turing patterns by the Finsler geometry (FG) modeling technique on thermally fluctuating triangular lattices, which are often used for modeling cell membranes or lipid membranes, focusing on the origin of diffusion anisotropy. The FG modeling prescription allows us to assume direction-dependent diffusion described by Laplacian. To implement such diffusion anisotropy in the FG modeling, we need an internal degree of freedom (IDF), which depends on direction and position and is controlled by some external forces or stimuli. For such a direction-dependent IDF, we use velocity directions corresponding to thermal fluctuations of the lattice vertices. We find that anisotropic Turing patterns emerge in the direction along which vertices fluctuate. In the simulations, direction-dependent diffusion coefficients are unnecessary for input, and instead, the IDF aligns the direction of vertex fluctuation along a direction implemented by external stimuli. Abstract

Geometric confinement (GC) of skyrmions in nanodomains plays a crucial role in skyrmion stabilization. This confinement effect decreases the magnetic field necessary for skyrmion formation and is closely related to the applied mechanical stresses. However, the mechanism of GC is unclear and remains controversial. Here, we numerically study the effect of GC on skyrmion stabilization and find that zero Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) coupling constants imposed on the boundary surfaces of small thin plates cause confinement effects, stabilizing skyrmions in the low-field region. Moreover, the confined skyrmions are further stabilized by tensile strains parallel to the plate, and the skyrmion phase extends to the low-temperature region. This stabilization occurs due to the bulk anisotropic DMI coupling constant caused by lattice deformations. Abstract

In this paper, we study the stability of skyrmions (SKYs) caused by the geometric confinement (GC) effect observed in nano-domains in recent experiments, where SKYs appear only inside the boundary and is stable at the low magnetic field region. However, the mechanism of the GC effect is unclear for skyrmions. We numerically find that this effect is not observed in the standard model, in which the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) energy is discretized on lattice edges, while the effect is observed in a discrete model where the DMI energy is defined on lattice volume elements. In the latter model, the DMI energy on the surfaces effectively becomes very small compared with that of the inside. From this observation, we study a model with zero DMI energy on the surfaces parallel to the external magnetic field and find that SKY is significantly stabilized in the sample in the low magnetic field region., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Angular Leaf Spot (ALS) caused by Pseudocercospora griseola is responsible for 54% yield loss in Uganda's common beans. Host plant resistance is a safe and cost-effective management strategy for this disease. Identification of resistant common bean genotypes to prevailing races is vital to utilize the crop. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify genotypes that are resistant to the commonly occurring and virulent P. griseola races in Uganda for breeding purposes. Twenty-seven common bean genotypes and three control varieties (Mexico54, MCM5001, and CAL96) were screened at field conditions for ALS resistance at testing site (National Agricultural Research Laboratories--Kawanda) under natural disease infection. The genotypes were also evaluated in the screen house using frequently occurring P. griseola races: 61:63, 1:6 and 21:39. Variability in the severity of ALS on both leaves and pods was significant whereas the difference between seasons and the interaction between the seasons and genotypes was only significant for yield. The disease severity scores were higher (mean of 3.2) on leaves than on pods (mean of 2.9). Ninety-three percent, 33.3% and 15% of the genotypes were resistant to P. griseola races 21:39, 1:6 and 61:63, respectively. A large-seeded genotype AFR703 was resistant to all the three P. griseola races. A medium seed size genotype AFR702 and three small seed genotypes (G148, G18842 and G6727) were resistant to both 21:39 and 1:6 but moderate resistance to 61:63 whereas a large-seeded genotype AND279 was resistant to both 61:63 and 21:39 but moderate to 1:6. All of these six genotypes (AFR703, AFR702, G148, G18842, G6727 and AND279) expressed moderate resistance to P. griseola races on leaves under field conditions. Thus, these common bean genotypes could be used as sources of ALS resistance for breeding programs to address the ALS constraint; and genes responsible for resistance have to be characterized. Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia is prevalent worldwide but mainly affects children under five years of age and women of reproductive age. One of the main causes of anemia in these groups is diet incapable of meeting daily iron requirements. Biofortification of staple foods is an approach aimed at contributing to reduction of anemia in Africa, and common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), one of the leading staple foods in East and Central Africa, has gained attention as a valuable source of iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn). Its usefulness in improving iron status of iron anemic women and children is documented. Natural variation in iron and associated micronutrients like zinc exists in beans but their concentrations are below the target levels to meet daily requirements. This study aimed to develop and identify potential bean genotypes that surpass the HarvestPlus threshold of 90 ppm seed iron for possible promotion as high iron and zinc beans, and utilization in hybridization programs targeting these minerals, productivity and market traits. Advanced 578 genotypes were evaluated in five genotype groups planted in three locations from 2016 to 2018. Genotypes significantly differed (P[less than or equal to]0.05) in Fe, Zn, cooking time, canning quality and yield. Iron and Zn varied highly, ranging between 44-118 and 25-50 ppm, respectively, across the five-genotype groups. Cooking time ranged from 29-118 minutes and majority of the genotypes expressed good to excellent canning quality based on visual assessment (4-5) and hydration coefficients (2.1-2.2). Mean yields for bush beans and climbers were 1674-1977 kg [ha.sup.-1] and 2204-3160 kg [ha.sup.-1] , respectively. The most outstanding genotypes that combined above average yield with high Fe/Zn were CMKN1109 (96/ 43 ppm), SMR103 (92/ 43 ppm), SMC12 (90/43 ppm), and NUS16 (91/ 48 ppm). In addition, NUA127 (84/ 42 ppm), SMR53 (84/42 ppm), SMC160 (84/ 43 ppm) and NUA595 (83/ 42 ppm) yielded above average and expressed high canning quality. The genotypes that combined high Fe/ Zn, canning quality, and yield are potential genotypes for further improvement or evaluation for possible release. Abstract

Since the pioneering experiment, E89-009 studying hypernuclear spectroscopy using the $(e,e^{\prime}K^+)$ reaction was completed, two additional experiments, E01-011 and E05-115, were performed at Jefferson Lab. These later experiments used a modified experimental design, the "tilt method", to dramatically suppress the large electromagnetic background, and allowed for a substantial increase in luminosity. Additionally, a new kaon spectrometer, HKS (E01-011), a new electron spectrometer, HES, and a new splitting magnet were added to produce precision, high-resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy. These two experiments, E01-011 and E05-115, resulted in two new data sets, producing sub-MeV energy resolution in the spectra of ${}^{7}_{\Lambda}\text{He}$, ${}^{12}_{\Lambda}\text{B}$ and ${}^{28}_{\Lambda}\text{Al}$ and ${}^{7}_{\Lambda}\text{He}$, ${}^{10}_{\Lambda}\text{Be}$, ${}^{12}_{\Lambda}\text{B}$ and ${}^{52}_{\Lambda}\text{V}$. All three experiments obtained a ${}^{12}_{\Lambda}\text{B}$, spectrum, which is the most characteristic $p$-shell hypernucleus and is commonly used for calibration. Independent analyses of these different experiments demonstrate excellent consistency and provide the clearest level structure to date of this hypernucleus as produced by the $(e,e^{\prime}K^+)$ reaction. This paper presents details of these experiments, and the extraction and analysis of the observed ${}^{12}_{\Lambda}\text{B}$ spectrum.

Abstract

An experiment with a newly developed high-resolution kaon spectrometer (HKS) and a scattered electron spectrometer with a novel configuration was performed in Hall C at Jefferson Lab (JLab). The ground state of a neutron-rich hypernucleus, He 7 Lambda, was observed for the first time with the (e,e'K+) reaction with an energy resolution of ~0.6 MeV. This resolution is the best reported to date for hypernuclear reaction spectroscopy. The he 7 Lambda binding energy supplies the last missing information of the A=7, T=1 hypernuclear iso-triplet, providing a new input for the charge symmetry breaking (CSB) effect of \Lambda N potential., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL

Abstract

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a staple and nutritious leguminous food crop for all income categories in Africa. Efforts to improve its yield performance and nutritional components, especially iron and zinc have resulted in release of several varieties in the sub-Sahara African region. The objective of this study was to assess genetic progress in varieties released in 12 African countries through the Pan African Bean Research Alliance (PABRA) from 1973 to 2017, to inform current breeding decisions. A total of 214 released varieties, land races and breeding lines, of bush and climbing beans were evaluated for yield, micronutrient (Fe and Zn) concentration, and phenology in three locations (Kawanda and Kachwekano in Uganda, and Kitengule in Tanzania) in 2017/2018. There were significant differences (P<0.01) among genotypes for all traits, except days to maturity (DPM). Genotype x environment interaction was also significant (P<0.05) for all assessed traits, except for iron in climbing beans. Across environments, repeatability (H²) was greater than 0.50 for all traits, except for DPM in climbing beans. Annual rates of genetic yield gains were 4.41 and 4.57 kg ha-1 for large and small seed bush beans, and -2.74 and 21.6 kg ha-1 for large and small seeded climbers. Similarly, gains in seed iron (FESEED) were 0.40 and 0.17 ppm for bush and climbing beans, respectively. These represented an annual relative gain over the oldest varieties of 0.6 and 0.7% kg ha-1 for yield of large and small seeded bush beans, -0.3 and 1.6% kg ha-1 for yield of large and small seeded climbers, 0.6 and 0.2% ppm for FESEED of bush and climbers. Abstract

This article discusses a case of a 64-year-old man who was found to have a pancreatic head mass during a follow-up for colon cancer. The mass was confirmed to be a solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) through a biopsy. The tumor had invaded the main pancreatic duct and showed high-grade malignant transformation. Metastases developed in the para-aortic lymph nodes and liver one year after surgery. The main theorem of [2], claiming to give an upper bound for the number of automorphisms of a Mumford curve in characteristic p > 0, is false. The correct upper bound, due to van der Put and Voskuil, is the main theorem of [5]. The errors in [2] are explained in Remarks 4.8 and 8.27 of [5]. Abstract

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) provides dietary protein, energy, fiber, and micronutrients, especially iron and zinc to over 800 million people in Africa and Latin America. The crop has various seed types. White beans are very popular for the processing industry. This study aimed to investigate the agronomic performance, canning quality, cooking time (COOKT) and response to root rots (Fusarium cuneirostrum and Pythium ultimum) and angular leaf spot (ALS; Pseudocercospora griseola) diseases among 151 drought tolerant small and large seeded white bean genotypes from trials conducted between 2013 to 2018 in East Africa. Significant (P<0.001) differences existed among the genotypes for response to the three pathogens, COOKT and canning quality traits. Resistance to each of the pathogens was expressed in 24-75% of the genotypes, while dual resistance to any two pairs of the pathogens occurred in 10-44% of the genotypes. Four genotypes; ICNBunsixSxB405/4C- 1C-1C-88, RAZ-11, ETSNAP18 and ETSNAP3 expressed resistance to the three pathogens but had COOKT of 46-56 minutes (based on a Matson cooker), and below average canning quality. They are recommended as sources of diseases resistance but could be further improved for COOKT and canning quality. Sixty-eight genotypes had COOKT <50 minutes while 24 expressed good to excellent visual canning quality. Some phenotypes: RAZ-120, RAZ36-Caballero, NavyLine-60, NavyLine-25, ZABR16573-25F22, ZABR16575-60F22, ETSNAP33, Bifortsmallseeded-15 and ZABR16574-37F22, that were cooked in <45 minutes, exhibited good to excellent canning quality and expressed resistant to intermediate diseases resistance responses. Abstract

An investigation of the energy resolution of a conventional cylindrical proportional counter with thin anode diameters from 5 [[micro]meter] to 20 [[micro]meter] has been carried out for pure argon and argon + 10% methane at 1 atm. With argon + 10% methane the energy resolutions for 5 [[micro]meter], 10 [[micro]meter], and 20 [[micro]meter] anode wires were 13.5%, 13.7%, and 14.1% at 5.9 keV and a gas gain [approximately equal to] 250, respectively. An analysis of the first Townsend ionization coefficient shows that the superior energy resolution for the thinner anode wire is due to the effect of the stronger reduced electric field at the beginning portion of the avalanche region. This has important implications for microstrip gas counter where the (firmly supported) anodes can be made arbitrarily small, far finer than those possible in conventional wire chambers.
