12. Dependences of local density of state on temperature, size, and shape in two-dimensional nano-structured superconductors

Abstract

In this paper, we investigate a local density of state (LDOS) in two-dimensional nano-structured superconductors. We solve the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations self-consistently with the two-dimensional finite element method. In nano-structured superconductors, the LDOS as a function of the energy has many discrete peaks. A discretization of the LDOS comes from a discretization of energy levels due to the quantum confinement effect in nano-structured systems. When the temperature increases, a width of a peak in the LDOS is spread to a large energy range and neighbor peaks are superposed due to the thermal effect. On the other hand, for the fixed temperature, the behavior of the LDOS is different between nano-scaled rectangular and square systems. In the nano-scaled rectangular system, when only a lateral length increases, a contribution of the quantum confinement effect from the lateral side is suppressed, while the contribution from a longitudinal side remains large. Then, some peaks are left in the LDOS even when the lateral length is very large. These peaks form a periodic structure and can be regarded as gaps in a multi gap structure due to the quantum confinement effect. On the other hand, energy levels in the square system tend to arrange equally. Then, in the square system, peaks in the LDOS which exist in the rectangular system are small. Abstract

We have investigated vortex structures in three-dimensional superconductors under a helical magnetic field from a chiral helimagnet numerically. In order to obtain vortex structures, we solve three-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau equations with the finite element method. The distribution of the helical magnetic field is assumed to be proportional to the distribution of the magnetic moments in the chiral helimagnet. Then, the magnetic field is the same direction in the yz-plane and helical rotation along the helical axis. Under this helical magnetic field, vortices appear to be perpendicular to the surface of the superconductor. But we have found that there are tilted vortices toward the helical axis, although there is no component of the magnetic field along the helical axis. Abstract

We have investigated vortex states in two-dimensional superconductors under a oscillating magnetic field from a chiral helimagnet. We have solved the two-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau equations with finite element method. We have found that when the magnetic field from the chiral helimagnet increases, vortices appear all at once in all periodic regions. This transition is different from that under the uniform magnetic field. Under the composite magnetic field with the oscillating and uniform fields (down-vortices), vortices antiparallel to the uniform magnetic field disappear. Abstract

We have investigated vortex states in chiral helimagnet/superconductor bilayer systems under an applied external magnetic field Happl, using the Ginzburg-Landau equations. Effect of the chiral helimagnet on the superconductor is taken as a magnetic field HCHM, which is perpendicular to the superconductor and oscillates spatially. For Happl = 0 and weak HCHM, there appear pairs of up-and down-vortices. Increasing Happl, down-vortices gradually disappear, and number of up-vortices increases in the large magnetic field region. Abstract

We theoretically investigate the doping evolution of the electronic state of high-Tc cuprate on both sides of the half-filling on the basis of the three-dimensional three-band Hubbard model with a layered structure using the Hartree-Fock approximation. Once a small amount of holes or electrons are doped into the half-filled state, our model exhibits the charge-transfer insulator-to-metal transition along with a chemical potential jump. At the same time, the doped holes or electrons are inhomogeneously distributed, and they tend to form clusters in the vicinity of the half-filling. This suggests the possibility of microscopic phase separation with the separation between the metallic and the insulating regions., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

We report Cu, Fe, N‐doped carbon nanotubes, (Cu,Fe)−N−CNT, as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acidic media. (Cu,Fe)−N−CNT was prepared using a silica coating method in pyrolysis to minimize the formation of carbon‐coated metal oxide or carbide nanoparticles, which are known to be inactive for the H2O2 reduction. (Cu,Fe)−N−CNT shows a turnover frequency of 0.66 e− site−1 s−1 at +0.8 V vs. RHE and H2O2 yields of <1 % for the ORR with a utilization factor of active sites of 82 %. Kinetic analysis reveals that 4e− transfer rates for (Cu,Fe)−N−CNT are higher than those of a monometallic counterpart of Fe−N−CNT. In situ X‐ray absorption spectroscopy enables us to determine redox potentials: E°'(FeIII/FeII)=0.65 V vs. RHE and E°'(CuII/CuI)=0.45 V for (Cu,Fe)−N−CNT, and E°'(FeIII/FeII)=0.65 V for Fe−N−CNT. These results indicate that bimetallic doping into carbon nanotubes gives the effect on kinetic parameters but not on thermodynamic ones. In other words, there is no direct electronic interactions between the Cu and Fe active sites for (Cu,Fe)‐N‐CNT because such interactions should modulate their redox potentials. Abstract

Objectives Pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with systemic sclerosis (PAH-SSc) sometimes accompanies pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD). We aimed to reveal the relationship between clinical signs of PVOD and severity of pulmonary vasculopathy in SSc. Methods This study included 52 consecutive SSc patients who had pulmonary haemodynamic abnormalities [mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) >20 mmHg, pulmonary vascular resistance >2 WU or pulmonary artery wedge pressure (PAWP) >15 mmHg]. A chest CT scan was evaluated in all patients. Patients were divided into two groups, the 0–1 group and the 2–3 group, according to the number of chest CT signs for PVOD, including mediastinal lymph node enlargement, thickened interlobular septal wall and ground glass opacity. Pulmonary haemodynamics, echocardiography and MRI-based cardiac function, pulmonary function and serum biomarkers were compared between the two groups. Results Mediastinal lymph node enlargement, thickened interlobular septal wall and ground glass opacity were observed in 11 (21%), 32 (62%) and 11 (21%) patients, respectively. The 2–3 group (n  = 15) had higher mPAP (P  = 0.02) but lower diffusing capacity of carbon monoxide (DLCO)/alveolar volume (P  = 0.02) compared with the 0–1 group (n  = 37). Other parameters, including PAWP, cardiac output, left ventricular ejection fraction, left atrial diameter, forced vital capacity, brain natriuretic peptide and Krebs von den Lunge-6 were not different between the two groups. Conclusions The CT signs for PVOD had a positive correlation with mPAP but a negative correlation with DLCO in SSc patients, indicating that PAH-SSc may reflect a spectrum of pulmonary vascular disease that ranges from the pulmonary artery to the vein.
