Objectives: To develop and validate a method for accurate quantitative assessment of gingival recessions based on superimposition of serial 3D digital models. Materials and methods: Gingival recessions of mild (0.5–2 mm) and increased (3–7 mm) severity were simulated on stone casts and surface models were created. The outlines of the gingival margins of the mild (A) and severe recessions (B) were compared to the original gingival margins following 3D best fit superimposition through a gold standard technique (GS), which used intact adjacent structures, and the tested method (CC), which used single tooth crowns at the position of recessions, as superimposition reference. The primary outcome was the distance between the most apical point of each corresponding gingival margin along the respective tooth long axis. Results: For mild recessions, the median difference of the test methods (CC_A) from the reference method (GS_A) was 0.008 mm (IQR: 0.093; range: − 0.143, 0.147). For severe recessions, the median difference of the test method (CC_B) from the reference method (GS_B) was 0.009 mm (IQR: 0.091; range: − 0.170, 0.198). The proposed method (CC) showed very high intra- and inter-operator reproducibility (median: 0.025 and 0.033 mm, respectively). Conclusions: The suggested method offers highly accurate monitoring of gingival margin changes and diagnosis of gingival recessions using 3D digital dental models. The method is applicable irrespective of changes in tooth position or form, allowing for assessments over any time span. Clinical relevance: The accurate detection and visualization of gingival margin changes in 3D will enhance diagnosis and patient-doctor communication. © 2022, The Author(s).

In many brown algae, cytokinesis is accomplished through the centrifugal expansion of the membrane structure formed by the fusion of Golgi vesicles and flat cisternae. In contrast, it has been reported that cytokinesis in Sphacelaria rigidula progresses centripetally by adding Golgi vesicles and flat cisternae to cleaving furrows of the plasma membrane. The reason why this cytokinetic pattern was observed only in Sphacelaria species is unknown. In either cytokinesis pattern, a plate-like actin structure (the actin plate) coincides with the cytokinetic plane between the daughter nuclei. However, it is unclear how the actin plate is related to cytokinesis progression. In this study, we re-examined cytokinesis in the apical cells of S. rigidula using transmission electron microscopy. Double staining of the actin plate and the developing membrane was followed by fluorescence microscopy analysis to determine the relationship between these two formations. The results showed that cytokinesis in S. rigidula, as in many brown algae, was completed by centrifugal growth of the new cell partition membrane. A furrow of the plasma membrane was observed at the beginning of cytokinesis; however, further invagination did not occur. The actin plate arose at the center of the cytokinetic plane before membrane fusion and extended parallel to the expansion of the new cell partition membrane. When cytokinesis was slow due to insufficient Golgi vesicle supply to the cytokinetic plane in the cells under brefeldin A treatment, the extension of the actin plate was also suspended. In this study, the spatiotemporal relationship between the occurrence and expansion of the actin plate and the new cell partition membrane was revealed. These observations indicate that the actin plate might promote membrane fusion or lead to the growth of a new cell partition membrane. © 2023 Japanese Society of Phycology.

Introduction: The aim was to elucidate the magnitude of alterations in systemic blood counts in healthy patients during the first 14 days after fixed orthodontic appliance placement. Methods: This prospective cohort study consecutively included 35 White Caucasian patients starting orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances. The mean age was 24.48 ± 6.68 years. All patients were physically and periodontally healthy. Blood samples were collected at 3 time points: (1) baseline (exactly before the placement of appliances), (2) 5 days after bonding, and (3) 14 days after baseline. Whole blood and erythrocyte sedimentation rates were analyzed in automated hematology and erythrocyte sedimentation rate analyzer. Serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels were measured by the nephelometric method. Standardized sample handling and patient preparation procedures were adopted to reduce preanalytical variability. Results: A total of 105 samples were analyzed. All clinical and orthodontic procedures were performed without complications or side effects during the study period. All laboratory procedures were performed per protocol. Significantly lower white blood cell counts were detected 5 days after bracket bonding, compared with baseline (P <0.05). Hemoglobin levels were lower at 14 days than baseline (P <0.05). No other significant shifts or alteration patterns were observed over time. Conclusions: Orthodontic fixed appliances led to a limited and transient change in white blood cell counts and hemoglobin levels during the first days after bracket placement. The fluctuation of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels was not significant, demonstrating a lack of association between systemic inflammation and orthodontic treatment. © 2023 American Association of Orthodontists

Aerosolized microorganisms, including airborne pathogens may arise upon active performance of high-powered handpiece utilization during routine dental procedures. Existing evidence stems from a variety of interventions, pertaining solely on clinical trials either randomized or not, under typical dental/orthodontic office, university or hospital settings and includes both direct and indirect comparisons of treatment alternatives of a wide range. Major concerns have been raised with regard to working environment of health care professionals and major efforts are endorsed to minimize the dissemination of microbial and potentially pathogenic load of generated aerosols across medical disciplines, which has been particularly vital in the era of a pandemic. The chapter also presents a large-scale assessment of intervention practices to reduce pathogen load of aerosols within dental practice environment. Dental practice is one of the frontline representatives of high risk population against aerosolized particulates, including bacterial, viral and fungal pathogens.

This article provides a topical review of East Mediterranean phycology and seagrass biology, with a special focus on the outcomes of the multi-year project "Brown algal biodiversity and ecology in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea"supported by the TOTAL Foundation. Following a general overview of East Mediterranean seaweed biogeography and taxonomy, the review covers seagrasses, deep-water (circalittoral) macroalgal diversity, pathogens and algal defence, human impacts and biotic indices, alien species as well as the papers of this special issue. © 2022 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.

In radiology research soft tissues are often simulated on bone specimens using liquid materials such as water, or gel-like materials, such as ballistic gel. This study aimed to test the effect of hydration on the anatomical form of dry craniofacial bone specimens. Sixteen human dry skulls and 16 mandibles were scanned with an industrial scanner in dry conditions and after water embedding. Ten skulls were also embedded for different time periods (5 or 15 min). The subsequent 3D surface models were best-fit superimposed and compared by calculating mean absolute distances between them at various measurement areas. There was a significant, primarily enlargement effect of hydration on the anatomical form of dry skeletal specimens as detected after water embedding for a short time period. The effect was smaller in dry skulls (median 0.20 mm, IQR 0.17 mm) and larger in mandibles (median 0.56 mm, IQR 0.57 mm). The effect of different water embedding times was negligible. Based on the present findings, we suggest to shortly hydrate the skeletal specimens prior to reference model acquisition so that they are comparable to hydrated specimens when liquid materials are used as soft-tissue simulants for various radiologic research purposes. © 2022, The Author(s).

The present study investigates the impacts of low pH on the cell structure of the seagrasses Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile and Cymodocea nodosa (Ucria) Ascherson. The study was conducted via in situ experiments performed at the Castello Aragonese of Ischia (Naples, Italy), where shallow submarine vents lower the pH and can be used as natural laboratories. Shoots of the seagrasses were transferred from the control area (pH 8.1) to the two venting areas (pH 7.8 and 6.8) at different times. Epidermal cells of young leaves were examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and tubulin immunofluorescence. After one week at pH 7.8, the cell structure of Posidonia oceanica was normal, while in Cymodocea nodosa, microtubule (MT) network and cell structure were affected. In addition, in C. nodosa, ultrastructural analysis revealed a gradual degradation of the nuclei, a disorganization of the chloroplasts, and an increase in the number of mitochondria and dictyosomes. The exposure of both plants for 3 weeks at pH 6.8 resulted in the aggregation and finally in the dilation of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membranes. Tubulin immunofluorescence revealed that after three weeks, the MT cytoskeleton of both plants was severely affected. All these alterations can be considered as indications of an apoptotic-like programmed cell death (AL-PCD), which may be executed in order to regulate stress response. © 2022

Item does not contain fulltext, OBJECTIVE: To investigate occlusal result and post-treatment changes after orthodontic extraction of maxillary first permanent molars in patients with a Class II division 1 malocclusion. SETTING AND SAMPLE: Retrospective longitudinal study in a private practice, with outcome evaluation by an independent academic hospital. Ninety-six patients (53 males, 43 females) consecutively treated by one orthodontist with maxillary first permanent molar extraction were studied, divided into three facial types, based on pre-treatment cephalometric values: hypodivergent (n = 18), normodivergent (n = 21) and hyperdivergent (n = 57). METHODS: Occlusal outcome was scored on dental casts at T1 (pre-treatment), T2 (post-treatment) and T3 (mean follow-up 2.5 ± 0.9 years) using the weighted Peer Assessment Rating (PAR) Index. The paired sample t test and one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: PAR was reduced by 95.7% and 89.9% at T2 and T3, respectively, compared with the start of treatment. The largest post-treatment changes were found for overjet and buccal occlusion. Linear regression analysis did not reveal a clear effect (R-Square 0.074) of age, sex, PAR score at T1, incremental PAR score T2-T1, overjet and overbite at T1, and facial type on the changes after treatment (incremental PAR score T3-T2). CONCLUSIONS: The occlusal outcome achieved after Class II division 1 treatment with maxillary first permanent molar extractions was maintained to a large extent over a mean post-treatment follow-up of 2.5 years. Limited changes after treatment were found, for which no risk factors could be discerned.
